I was given this gift as an eighteenth birthday present...my very first car. And let me tell you! It's been great. I learned to drive standard on this car, and my only problem is that it stalls VERY easily. I've driven other standards, and this one was very touchy. It also doesn't like hills, which are all over the place here. But other than that, it has saved me tons of gas money. It's also a real rush, since it feels like I'm racing every time I drive it. I like the lower seats, since I have a very tall boyfriend, though I, being 5'2", need a little extra cushioning. It's also so reliable/safe to drive. It responds quickly, I've avoided accidents with the quick turn. A Beauty.

Gas Miser

This is a great car for its purpose. I bought it for one thing, mileage. Sure, the plastic is cheap and the seats stink but argue with 42MPG? Stick shift is a must to get the engine's power and economy. I wouldn't want this with a slushbox. The car has 106K on it but tracks very true, no wander or pulls. Brakes are very good with almost no fade. And even with cheap, skinny tires, it handles very well with minimal body roll through the twisties. I get a few drips through the weather seals but not enough to care about. And contrary to other reviews, the A/C blows ice cold air, even at 85+ deg I can't leave it on the coldest temp or it freezes us out. Pretty amazing little car.

Check your oil!

If you purchase this car, make sure you check your oil frequently. The car gobbles up oil like it's going out of style. And, if you're not careful it can lead to huge problems. I blew an engine at 88,000 miles. And yes, I did change the oil every 3,000 miles (or less). Overall, would I buy a Saturn again? If I didn't have the money to buy something better, I guess I would. It still looks good and with a brand new engine (and AC, cluth, alternator, and a few other things ) it's running like a champ. 'Course I do need to make sure I keep track of the oil.

Saturn S Series

This is a very noisy vehicle. Wind noise and road noise make it impossible to talk normally or listen to the radio at normal levels. 5-speed manual is clunky and hard to shift. Occasionally pops out of gear.

I just bought my first car, an Saturn SL1, and I haven't ever driven any car better than this babe. This car is inexpensive, but has the excellent quality. Its good 4 cylinder engine, gets up the speed and its quick and nimble when need be. Over the other cars i have driven in this price range, like the Ford Focus, the Protege, I think Saturn tops the list. Just think about it, how many recalls have there been on the Saturn SL1, but there has been so many recalls on the Focus that I have lost count! Besides that its not every year or two that your Saturn looks obsolete, it keeps its newness longer than other cars in its class. Good Saturn you're the best!!!
