Used 1999 Saturn S-Series SL2 4dr Sedan Consumer Reviews
Owned for 8 years
Bought the car new and generally have had good service. About 60k miles it started using oil. Now uses about 1qt/1500 miles. Was told that it was a problem with the rings common in 97- 99 Saturns. It has been very reliable with no unscheduled maintanence. It now has about 121k miles. Fuel mileage started out great, but has declined to an average of about 30 mpg mixed city/hwy. The servo for the remote trunk release quit at about 105k miles. Many common parts, like spark plugs and wires, are only available thru a Saturn dealer, and you will pay a premium for them. Brakes are weak, leg room is cramped in all seats and lumbar support is poor.
Great little commuter car
This is a great little commuter car. It handles very well, has decent power, and doesn't have the rust issue other vehicles have in Minnesota. It's also very comfortable for a small car.
Best Buy, Hands Down
This was the easiest purchase I ever made. The car is extremely reliable. The inside is very well designed and the dash and surrounding instruments almost surround you like a cockpit. Saturn dealerships are very handy to go to when something is wrong. Most things I had go wrong, they covered on warranty. Even when I went past my warranty, they did replace a part for free. Overall, the car handles well. This car is now almost 4 yrs old, but it drives very well and I have had no moderate to major repair work needed yet. I have driven over 52000 miles in it.
I'll never purchase another Saturn
My Saturn SL2 has had many problems over the 4 years that I have owned it. It has stranded me 2 times, luckily in safe neighborhoods. The plastic parts on the interior and exterior are eaisly broken (dome light has broken twice, misc lights on car have fallen out due to broken plastic, knobs, consoles, dash, etc have all broken). The A/C has broken 3 times, all for different reasons. All 4 power windows have broken at different times. The Saturn dealerships are just like any other when it comes to repairs: you bought it, now its your problem, not ours. On the other hand, I've owned several foreign vehicles and had very few problems.
Reliable and Economical
I commute 80 miles one way to work 2-3 times a week. I now have almost 90K on this car and have had no major problems. I have been through one set of tires, one set of brakes, and two serpentine belts. I was also rear-ended pretty hard and only had a small dent in the bumper. Other than the rear passenger window not always going up, everything else still functions fine. The seating is a little low, there are no armrests and the brakes grab lower than I like. The dash vibrates a little on a cold start. All in all, I am quite satisfied and hope to get 150K on this car without breaking my wallet.
