Test drive of the Saturn Ion

To make a long story short, the ride was nice. The car handled very smoothly with adequate power for it's class, without being too noisy. But the car fails miserably on comfort. The cockpit of this "roomier" Saturn can best be described as claustrophobic. The center console felt like it was digging into my right leg the whole time. It actually felt painful after my 3 minute test drive. I am 6 feet tall, but even the salesperson, who looked to be about 5'8" said he had a problem with it. How could Saturn produce a new model with such an obious shortcoming? Did anyone look at this thing before it was put on the market?

A Very Mixed Bag

I drive over 20K/year for work, and need a reliable and economical vehicle. The Saturn Ion specs out much better than the Cavalier that I'm used to driving, plus my wife is in love with the Ion's looks and features. What I didn't know is that the driver's seat would hurt my back so badly after driving for 30 miles or more. I would recommend NOT buying this car to anyone who has had any kind of back problems or tight muscles. Also, there is too little useable storage space within easy reach of the driver; there isn't even a safe place to put a cell phone with an earpiece attached. I'm wondering what kind of individual they designed this car for?

Just came back from a trip to Eastern Kentucky. The curves combined with hills can be down right scarry for those who are not used to it. The car had descent pickup but could not turn the corners as well as the Chevy Astro I was trying to follow. High roof line also does not help with mpg. Car has great bottem end torque in the standard but the automatic acts like it has a stall converter and is always in the 3 grand to 4 grand in rpm for just normal cruising.

HAD NO INTENTION OF BUYING ION WHEN I ENTERED SATURN SHOWROOM. A QUICK SCAN OF THE ION WAS APPEALING AND THEN TO THE STICKER ON THE WINDOW, SURPRISED ME TO NOT BE NEAR THE EIGHTEEN OR NINETEEN THOUSAND MARK. SATURN IS ONE OF THE FEW WHO DO NOT JACK THE PRICE UP TWO OR THREE THOUSAND THEN OFFER YOU A REBATE. THE MARKETING STRATEGY OFFERING REBATES AND DEALER DISCOUNTS IS A PROCESS OF PYSCHOLOGICALLY CONDITIONING THE PUBLIC FOR EVER INCREASING COST OF AUTOS. IF A CAR SELLS STRONG THE MANUFACTURER TAKES THE REBATE OFF THUS SKUNKING YOU FOR A HIGHER PRICE. SATURN ISN'T DOING THAT AS I SEE IT. END COMMENT -- PRICE IS UP FRONT AND FAIR.
