Used 1991 Pontiac Grand Am Consumer Reviews
can't all cars be made this good?
RELIABLE mostly trouble free. Did not need major items, wheel bearings, heater, and ignition parts until after 180,000 miles.Good starter in cold MN winters. Rode well in long trips. Steady 28 mpg throughout the years. Paint job excellent condition yet. Interior basic and functional. Sat four winter-clothed men comfortably.
An Economical Car that is not a shoebox
I bought my 1991 Grand Am for my son when it had 146,000 miles on it. There had been several previous owners. I bought it for him, but he gave it back to me. To resolve oil leaks, and running problems, I had the 2.5 L engine rebuilt. By the time I finished repairs, A/C, brake cylinders, paint, carpet, starter, Rt front wheel bearing, I was getting about 33 mpg on the highway (w/out AC on.) i had spent about $6,000. The car now has 235,000 miles on it, and the only problem is a slightly weak reverse gear. I'd rate the interior and exterior higher except for plastic, and poor trim. Oil filter hard to change w/out getting leaks, but the engine is all metal. No plastic manifold to crack!
Great Car
This car was purchased new and I still own it. It has 256,000 miles on it and still going. Had an electronic problem 3 yrs ago -cost $500 to fix. Only other problem has been the alternator-apparently a weak link. It goes out every 2-3 years. Have been replacing them with one from a junk yard because just how long can this car last. Now just keep a spare on hand. Radiator is now leaking so needs some work there. Easy to reach into back seat from the front while driving to retrieve those articles. East to see around when backing up. GM should make more of these cars. Also have a 04 Grand AM but it lacks some of these features.
great car
I have had the car for a year and a half.Had very little problems. changed the egr valve, valve cover gasket, alternator. but very easy to work on.
easy fix
I had the car for a year and a half. I bought the car with 104,000 and now have 144,000. I put a lot of mile on it. there are a few thins that I had to fix. I replaced the valve gasket twice, replaced the egr valve, alternator, overdrive sensor and battery. other than that just the normal maintenance.runs great. Paints coming off and is starting to rust. my average mpg is 20-23.
Awesome Car
I raced a 2002 Honda Civic EX with 138 hp and dusted him! This car is extremely comfortable and the ride is extremely smooth. The tranny will shift to any gear as soon as you move the center shift lever.
Break Down
I had a terrible time with this car. Thank God for AAA. I had 4 repairs in 6 months. Starter went, Window derailed, Overheated twice, which warped the engine, and is now worthless. Car only has 85000 miles, only got 25 mpg with 4cyl, very little room in back seat. Not vey satisfied with this car.
Uhg.
Worst first car expierence ever. Within 1 year, it blasted through 4 alternators, 17 fan belts, 3 A/c systems, Exhaust overhaul, Driver side window belt ripped so window was useless, Center console broke, Breakes replaced Twice (Gave out each time on the highway), Pedal also once started sticking so I could not idle the car accelerated to about 60mph on its own. I have to hold down brakes to NOT accelerate immediatly. And thats just things that happened fromt he top of my head. There was more, but I don't care to recall it all.
GMC and Pontiac not Honorable
Ran into a Secret Warranty or Special Warranty issue. The car was made and purchase unknown to me with a problem with the primer called delamination which casues the paint to peel and car start rusting. No notice was sent out nor was I ever approach to get it repaired when I was taking the car to several different Pontiac dealers for repair. They will not fix their misstake due to the age and mileage of car.
Love It
I really like this car. I bought it a year ago with 104K and it now had 120K. It has never given me any trouble. The only thing i can complain about is the 2.5L doesn't have much power and the fenders aren't very strong. Somebody bumbed my front fender with thier hip and it bent like a popcan. I like how it drives- smooth and nice. The a/c works really good. I put some Pontiac alloy wheels on it to replace the hub caps because they kept falling off on my gravel road. Otherwise this car has been really reliable and i can't complain.
All it needs is a new exterior design
For how old the car is I am surprised it hasnt blown up yet. But besides that point. I have owned the car for three years and besides the usual maintenance I have not one problem with this car except for installing a new starter. I expect the car to last me for another couple of years with no problems.
Good and Solid
I've had my '91 Grand Am since about '97. Got it with 89K miles on it, currently about 140K. I've almost beat the heck out of this thing and dispite that its still been good to me. Nice and solid, parts are easy to get to, good runner. Pretty reliable. I plan to drive this thing into the ground...
love it
I have owned this car for about two years now and it has been an absolute joy. Minus a few repairs (mostly electrical) it has run great since i got it... it was in bad shape when i bought it but still ran hwy speeds for a month or two before i could get it fixed... come to find out the ignition coil was bad and it had been running on only one cylinder! i was very impressed. currently at about 106k miles and still going strong. very peppy it has the mpg of a four cylinder and the power of a 6. all around good car, very reliable, great cold starter, took a deer hit with no more than a broken headlight. for the price it couldn't be beat!
Great Pontiac
Bought the car new in 1991 and had it for 10 years until 2001 when I got a new Ford Taurus SES. Ran great and was very reliable. Racked up a little over 200,000 miles. It was a 5-speed manual and only had to replace the clutch once. Engine and drivetrain were fantastic. Easily outperformed almost every car in the early 90's, and was very reliable mechanically. Unfortunately, it fell victim to low build quality in the body and interior.
amy
its an ok car.
Ran good, but body was rustbucket
Bought one for $800 at a fairly shady lot. Had 111,000 miles on it, it started and got me to school everyday. It had the 4Tech engine in it (not the horrendous Quad), and I attribute that factor to how well it ran. Some frigid Illinois mornings (-15F), my car, amazingly, was the only one that would start. How it looked was a different story. Got it with no rust, no real dings or anything, but that first winter DESTROYED the body. Rust spreading like an infection on my car body, and glad to read in the reviews that mine wasn't the only one that had the rear shocks break up into the trunk. 2 1/2 years and 30,000 miles later, engine dies. Sold to junk yard for $35. (Trans was still good)
GM's worst car
This car sucks. The le model lacka any power at all, the base engine should at least be able to move the car! The 2.5 liter tech 4 engine is prone to leak oil, by the quart. I've had it fixed on three different occasions and it won't stop breaking on me. Not only that the block is heavy bulky iron even adding more to the weight. The interior is fine other than the fact the light gray dash blinds you if theirs even a little sun. So my options are let it get dusty or clean it and crash. I will NEVER buy a gm product again ever. reliable. I'm donating my car to an auto school as soon as possible!
Rust machine
Well what can I say, I bought this car from my brother-in-law, for a pittance $450. About what it was worth. I just needed transportation quickly. The body on these things rust out bad, rear, doors, trunk, roof. Horrid paint job. It leaked oil like a sieve. It was the most underpowered car I've driven, next to the 1989 Chevy Celebrity, which is heavier and uses the same engine. I beat the hell out of the thing, and had no need for major repairs for two and half years. Until now, the seals are shot and the cylinders are knocking and getting ready to seize up. I would avoid these dogs unless someone gives it to you.
Great Car When Taken Care Of
I bought this car off of my parents who purchased it new in 1990. They had taken great care of it, and paid attention to every detail. I needed a good reliable car for college, and this was a great find. It looks and runs like brand new, has great power, and has never let me down. Good car if found in good condition.
with a high preformance exuast system
I got the car in 2001 after I biffed it with my s-10. Of course, the body is all rusted out. The car has only let me down once when the starter when out after work one day. Other problems I had was I cracked the exuaust off behind the cadaylitic converter because I bottomed out while hiting the dips in Holdingford. I later took the cadalytic converter off and replaced it with a cherry bomb glasspack. It's relitivly fast and I had it doing 110. A good reliable vehicle, and I would recommend it to anyone. My heater also dosen't work and I have no time or ambission to fix. I don't care much anymore. I bought a 1996 Grand Prix.
Racer
My Oh so wonderful 1990 Grand Am SE 2 Door coupe is one of the fastest 4 cylinder cars on the road, Or at least it was. The performance of this car was unimaginable thanks to the custom quad turbo I had on it. The only problem was the quad 4 motor cant handle any type of stress. I found myself under the hood weekly working on the engine to keep it running. I would definately recomend this car for someone who doesnt care to much about comfort and likes to work on motors. As for my car its now in the junk heap after I blew the motor for the 6th time. Maybe a quad turbo is just to much for that engine,
Go Pontiac
This car is SWEET! Everyone in my family has owned Pontiacs before, and no one has ever had a single problem with them. There are 3 Grand Am's and one Grand Prix in my house right now, and all of them are different years and styles. I think that I love the 1990-1991 style the best! The car is fun to drive, and still looks like it just came off the showroom floor.
Runs Great !
Bought this car 1 year old at 10k mi., did regular maintenance on my own (oil, lube, filters, trans fluid, etc...), now has 129k and still running strong (Tech 4 engine) no major problems, just alternator, cooling fan and once the ECM went bad leaving the engine unable to start ($350 w/labor). This car has served me well, overall very dependable and easy maintenance to keep it running.
Advice: Don't waste even little money!
Mechanical Quality: Blown engine at purchase. Alternator has been replaced 4 times. Check engine light came on causing all sorts of electrical problems (AC and Speedometer died and transmission ran at 1700 RPM at idle, but became normal after light went off). Replaced 3 sensors (O2; Coolant; TPS), EGR Valve and thermosthat. Replaced engine computer which fixed engine light problem. Shocks/Struts need to be replaced. Body/Interior Quality: Body rusts out rather quickly. Exterior paint job is terrible. Tire noise in city and highway driving is very loud and annoying. Feature/Accessory Quality: Heating takes a while to get warm. AC is cold, but needs more power to blow our more. Good Stereo!
1990 Grand Am LE Coupe Quad 4
I've had this car for almost three years and the only thing that has gone wrong is the A/C compressor. It has over 140K miles on the original Quad 4. Most Quad motors aren't very reliable but this one has been perfect. Everyone thinks of the GA as a junk but it really is a solid car, you just have to take care of it. Don't beat the hell out of your car, ignore oil changes and expect it to run forever.
Review
I owned this Pontiac for two years and put over 500,000 miles on it! The little car fell right apart around the engine though. I had the 2.3 DOHC 16 Valve oh she was a fast little girl! I just wish Pontiac would've built the body better. The rear shocks endded up coming up though the trunk. I paid $1,500 for it and drove it back and forth to college everyday. I'd say I got my money out of it.
32 YEARS and counting!
My 1990 Grand Am Sedan is still kicking in 2022 with minimum maintenance! Don't plan on giving it up any time soon. EDIT: We are about to head into 2024, and this car is still going strong, and still nothing but standard maintenance ( filters, oil changes, etc). No major outlays at all. I will drive it until it doesn't love me anymore! ;-)
Gettin it
Best car ever, routinly smokes mustangs
