A Decent Van Built By Ford

2Nissans, 06/01/2009
2001 Nissan Quest SE 4dr Minivan (3.3L 6cyl 4A)

This is a decent vehicle with so-so amenities, but has a reliable engine. If you can find one with low mileage with a low price, here are a few things to look for that I have found at over 200,000 to date: have windows up and listen for engine when at idle and then at driving. Engine mounts tend to break easily. Check transmission oil pan for leaks. Check CV boots for tears, and listen for any clicking noises when you turn wheels while driving at parking lot speeds. Make sure A/C and fan(s) blow properly with no strange noises.

We bought this mini-van brand new. Normal maintenance is all we really performed on this vehicle. The rear cooling feature is a must as it cools the people in the back seat quickly. I am very happy with this purchase. The engine runs smoothly and quietly even though it has over 100k miles.

I have loved this minivan for the past six years and will miss it (my husband is making me sell it to make room for other vehicles). I never wanted a minivan to begin with, but never felt I was driving one with this Quest. It is so luxurious and comfortable inside and looks great on the outside. I have always gotten compliments on it. Has been a very reliable vehicle -- no major problems.

Bought the 2001 Qwest brand new on 1/1/2002. We have owned it for 7 1/2 years and it has been very dependable. All we ever had to do is the routine maintenance and oil changes. In all that time we just had one window latch break on the van. It has been through a stress test of three children.

Performance only marginal. Good around town, bad through hilly/ mountain areas on the highway. Driver side window has problem going up/down. Radio display goes in/out at times. Comfortable seating. With 45,000 miles, van has been very reliable. Some squeeks..side and rear windows???

Bought the van, used with 30,000 miles logged on it, put on an additional trouble free 100,000 miles on it. Had none of the problems mentioned by other reviewers, ( must have been lucky I guess ). Change the oil regularly, replaced the tires twice bought some studded snow tires for winter travel and in that configuration it handles like a regular 4 wheel drive vehicle .

Ya Really Have to Wonder About Nissan

DoubleNissan, 09/23/2008
2001 Nissan Quest SE 4dr Minivan (3.3L 6cyl 4A)

The van is actually built by Ford, and although I have never associated true quality to Nissan, the product is more of a black eye to them, which probably explains their choice to cancel the joint project (Mercury Villager/Nissan Quest) with Ford Motor Co. The Quest was a great product in its first incarnation, but the second generation (this model) that started in '99 was ill prepared and obviously not given much attention, especially in the engine and transmission department. It has decent power, fairly good handling (at least the SE does), and offers decent room. The engine has held up quite well with nearly 190,000 miles on it, and the only major problem was a broken tranny oil pan.

Good ride, but poor reliability in the 2000 model

We bought this car with 87,000 miles on it in 2011. It now (June 2016) has 125,000 miles on it. It has been the worst car for repairs that we've had for the few miles that we've driven it. The cruise control stopped working, and there are no replacements available. Fuel economy is poor around town (14-16(sometimes)), and we only get up to 21-22 on the road. I was told that it was similar or identical to the Mercury Villager. The two 1998 Villagers that we had both got 24-28 mpg on the road. I don't know how many vacuum hoses have broken. I asked my mechanic to replace all of them, but he said that there are so many, that he wouldn't advise it because of the cost. Of course, many of these are on the back side of the engine, and very inaccessible. The engine is a 3.3. If it were the the 3.0, the engine used in the Villager, the performance may have been better. I talked to the parts man at the local dealership today, and he said that the Nissan Quest had a Nissan Maxima engine, and a Ford body. He said that Nissan ended that partnership with Ford in 2002(?), so post 2002 models may be better. Update on 12/21/2016. About 6 weeks after we got it, the car started bucking and missing. We went on a trip and had to stop driving it because it missed so badly. After about a month, we finally found a mechanic who knew that the problem was the distributor without even looking at it. It ran Ok after that; mileage was still poor. However, the problem has started again, and seems to start around 40-45 mph. I would never buy this model in the years prior to 2003. Update as of 6/24/217. Fuel economy has improved if I use Sea Foam, but still does not meet EPA ratings. We now get 16 around town & 22 on the road. Still bucks around 45 mph. While I upped the rating slightly, I still wouldn't buy a Quest built before 2003.

What happened?

Alex, 08/01/2008

My original Quest was a 98 whose only defect was the heater going in 2 yrs. My 2000 gave me major problems and is about to die. I don't understand. I know people with 98s and 96s who haven't had anywhere near the problems I've had. Even with mechanical breakdown I feel I traded in a great minivan for a knock-off of the original. The front end makes noise always like its falling apart and now it is stalling like a 90 year old at the olympics. My friend has a 98 with 30k more miles on it than mine (147k) and he has no major trouble and puts a lot of miles everyday on it. Can't wait to say goodbye to it.

Constant Front End Problems

NBS, 12/29/2005
2000 Nissan Quest SE 4dr Minivan
2 of 2 people found this review helpful

The front end always sounds like it's falling apart. Constant noise and replacement of tires and brakes (almost annually), CV Joints, Struts, etc.. Several thousand dollars in front end work at dealership only to always have the same problems. The noise is a horrible creak that sounds like the front end is falling off. People stare at us if we pull up in a drive thru! TV/VCR broke first year and dealer refused to replace/fix it even though it's a factory TV/VCR. If you buy one of these you better have alot of money for tires and brakes. After researching, found out that's due to the thing being built on a car chassis instead of a truck chassis. Can't wait to get rid of it.

I purchased my Quest new. In less than 1 week after I had it, it was back into the shop for repairs. I have had numerous other problems as well. I bought my Quest, due to the fact that I had heard nothing but good. I have been very dissappointed. I loved the looks, the feel is O.K., my children love the entertainment package, but everytime I turn around, it's back in for something.

We bought our Quest new in 2000 and chose it specifically due to the features:price ratio. At the time it was very unusual to see minivan with sport tuned suspension, HR rated tires, power moonroof and a standard TV/VCP unit. Given the demand for the Odyssey and Sienna, we were able to acquire our Quest for several thousand below MSRP. That said, it's been in the shop more times than any vehicle we've ever owned. Summary:the brakes are in need of constant servicing, replacement headlight bulbs have burned out the wiring several times, radio display ceased, the passenger side pwr window needed to be repaired twice, it's now in the shop for a trans rebuild & we're on our second TV/VCP unit.

Now that we are coming up on 30K I am surprised about all the little things we have had to deal with. The entertainment system has been replaced and looks like it will need it again. We have needed to replace 2 cup holders and other latches, etc. Also, I consistently get 15-18 mpg (that is worse than my '94 Plymouth Grand Voyager got!). For the $24,000 price tag, I have expected more. So, we'll wait and see. We haven't had any trouble yet with engine, etc.

Van has been very economical and useful. No major problems mechanically. Recalled for accelerator sticking problems. Fixed but sticking again. Safety in question. Paint job was terrible. Had it 4 months and had pits all over it down to metal. Garage kept and in town, on NO dirt or gravel roads. Nissan said "Bugs" must have done it. Would not repaint it. Warranty wouldn't cover it. Still driving it with pits in the paint! Has 58,000 miles now and still runs good. Changed oil and tires and that's it. twenty six miles per gallon highway miles. GREAT on mileage.

I bought this car new as I thought it would last a long time. The engine and transmission are mechanically sound, but I have replaced the drive shafts twice. The side window latches do stick. I have had work done on the power windows. I do plan on keeping this car for another few years. The VCR screen did break after 4 years.

This vehicle is smooth to drive, has decent pickup speed, handles well, and has every bell and whistle you can imagine - the sunroof is a nice touch! But the interior is very small, with very little leg and head room. The cargo area is equally lacking - and for a family of five, it's a tight fit for a long drive. Overall, an excellent choice for a small family or adults who just want a few extra seats available - but not for larger families who do a lot of traveling.

This mini van has been excellant for us. Bought brand spanking new in 2000 and have about 55K on it now. It is fully loaded and everything still works. Have only done regular maintenance. Gas mileage might could be better. I have had a blast driving it. Ultimate "MOM" mobile. Removable middle seat captain chairs with a rear seat that can be moved right up in front to haul lots of stuff.

I have had my Quest for almost 2 years now and I LOVE it! This van is such a great deal...we got all the features we really wanted, plus the entertainment center which has been invaluable. We have taken several long trips in our van and my husband (who is quite tall) never complains about being uncomfortable. The kids are entertained the whole trip and the rear a/c has been wonderful! We have had such positive experiences with Nissan vechicles and their warranty is top notch! I except to buy another Quest when we are ready for something new.

First of all, let me say that I never wanted a minivan. I am one of those moms who really wanted a big SUV, but deep inside knew I could not afford the gas. In comes my slightly used 2000 Nissan Quest GXE...I really love this minivan. It is fun to drive and really handles the road well. In my Quest, I do not feel like I am driving a minivan. It looks great, inside and outside and gets good gas mileage, too! AND...it's a NISSAN!!! I would recommend this minivan to anyone. I can't wait to see what the future holds for the Nissan Quest. From a very happy Nissan Quest owner!

Overall a pretty good vehicle - gets good mileage (I average about 20-22 mpg) for the kind of vehicle it is. Lots of little interior problems - entertainment center, front cup holder ratchet on both sides broke after only 1 1/2 years, door handle chrome paint is peeling on both sides. Have had to replace 1 fuel injector, and have had to constantly clean them (service engine soon light blinks for short periods and the idle goes very rough - mechanic says it's the fuel injectors).

We have had our van for almost 4 years and we constantly have to replace the front brakes. None of my other cars have had this problem, but it seems every 6000 miles the brakes are completly shot again. It is in the garage again today and the brakes are 90% gone. They are covered by a warranty for work, but it is a pain to keep bringing it in. We have also had a problem with the gas pedal sticking when you go to hit the gas. My daughter is just learning to drive and she noticed it also.

we had minor problems after purchase and during warranty such as replace vcr unit twice and driver window motor replaced, all covered by warranty but makes you wonder what else will go wrong. Our dealer service was great. We got the extended warranty at 75000 miles. At 77,000 the front end had major problems such as axle and tie rods etc all not covered. Now we are told it will need about anoth $1000 in repairs. We are thinking of trading it in. I expected better from a Japanese car when we bought it new. It was cheaper then the honda and toyota and now I know why.

For a van, this is an economical and reliable model (much better than the Ford Windstar I owned previously). No major repairs required, just tires, oil changes, transmission fluid change. It has recently become noisier (air leaks, rattles, body integrity issues - NOT the engine - it is fine). Seats are not as comfortable as other vans - could use a little more support and/or padding, as well a little more leg room for rear passangers.

My 2000 Quest is used for going to and from work, vacations and hauling musical equipment. This van has served me well with absolutely nothing breaking on the thing. It has never seen a repair shop and, after 52ooo miles, still runs great. There are no rattles, squeeks or wind noises. It has never been the most quiet vehicle I've ever owned but since I am the primary driver, I don't really mind.

Positive thoughts:......This vehicle has a good gas mileage, comfortable, spacious, good features also easy to work on it when changing spark plugs compared with other minivan. Negative thoughts:... knock sensor problems very hard to change and expensive if you take it to a mechanic. Motor mounts get worn out every 6 months or sooner if you drive it on a daily basis..

1. Good pickup. Repeated problems with alignment. 2. Leather seats worth extra money, as are moonroof, upgraded stereo and VCR. 3.Great visibility, not much maneuverablity in parking lots. 4.Steering wheel controls for stereo are a godsend. 5.Running boards, alloy wheels, and silver color adds sporty details to an otherwise solid design. 6. Disappointed by electrical problems with rear windshield wiper; service department has not resolved difficulties. Other electrical problems include overdrive on/off switch, and digital readout for stereo and clock, both working intermittantly. 7. Never had any engine, brake, transmission problems.

We bought this vehicle because I loved the design. The van looks sleek (two tone) and nice. But too many things wrong with it in the 1 1/2 years I've had it. Almost immediately a door sensor went out and it kept thinking there was a door open. Sliding door window kept coming loose and would make an annoying noise until replaced. Passenger door window makes a noise when coming up or down and dealer says that there is nothing wrong with it??? Could make it better.

During the first 8000 miles, I've been back for warranty repair 5 times. All were a/c problems, the last 3 were for gas leaks, and if it required a 4th visit, then the CA lemon law would have applied. I needed to seat 7 and I thought it was a good value. I would not buy it again because of the poor quality. With 14000 miles on it, windows rattle, tail gate sags, tires loose 5lbs of air every 2 weeks, strange metallic sounds when the engine starts, and a musky odor from the air vents. I'm just hoping it last until I can afford to trade it in.

Fully loaded GLE with 3.3L V-6, leather and burlwood trim interior, plus 6-CD changer w/upgraded sound system, VCR (should a been DVD), power everything, with driver seat memory, and other stuff too numerous to mention. City mileage improved considerably from ~15 mpg to ~20 mpg after about a year. Electronic mileage fuel calculator is a joke, not even accurate. No major issues thus far -- knock on burlwood. Warranty will expire in a couple months and I have seen a few service advisories I would like to get checked, such as side-window latches that loosen, noises from rear suspension, seat belt recall. No issues regarding tire quality.

I purchased the Quest over a year ago and I have no problems with. The drop-down tv is great for my two year old on long trips. The Toyota was nice also but I wasn't willing to pay the extra money for it. Nissan's quality is just as good anyway. The quest is a good van for a family on a budget. It's not a porsche, but it will not break down on you either.

Considering the year of the vehicle, it has all the amenties I would wish for and the reliablity I would expect of a Nissan. Not bad looking for a minivan, the door handles are not the usual and still functional.
