Reliable and great in off-road/snow conditions

I bought my 99 Pathfinder used in 2006 with 109,000 miles on it. Since then I have put another 100,000 miles on it, driven back and forth across the country 3 times and used my car frequently in off road/snowy conditions. I treat my cars pretty roughly, but Pathfinder never gave me any problems. If you are looking for a reliable truck that performs excellently in snow and off road conditions this could be a great car for you. She is a reliable commuter car, but does not get great MPG. Beware, though, the 99 comes in a 99.5 model. This means that finding the right parts can be a bit laborious - it seems as if Nissan mixed and matched parts when they made the 99.5.

Very happy with the Pathfinder. Currently has 313,000kms and purchased it with about 260,000. I've had it for about 3 years. Before this I drove a 2010 Subaru Impreza, a good car, but I prefer driving this older Pathfinder more. It's very reliable even the exhaust is original. The struts did need replacing.

The fuel pump failed the third week of ownership and I thought uh-oh. But that turned out to be the last major problem thus far, 251,000 miles later. Most reliable car I've ever owned. Have used 15w-50 synthetic oil every 6k miles and drain the 4 qt of transmission fluid out of the automatic every 30k and everything still works, except for the CD player. Mileage is now only around 19 with gasohol,

I purchased the care new in 1999. Have 180,000+ miles on it and its still going strong. Had to replace struts, ignition and blower motor ... not bad for 10+ years of ownership. Still getting 20+ mpg too! Only down fall is it doesn't have the 3rd row seat ... guess that gives me an excuse to get a new one!

My 1999 Path Finder is the second SUV I owned I had a 1995 Jeep Cherokee and the transmission died on me after 6 months of owning that Jeep with only 80,000 miles on it. I absolutely love my Pathfinder I purchased it with 157,000 miles on it already and it still runs strong and starts up realiably every morning and has not failed me yet like that Jeep has.

Love, love, love this vehicle! Great little SUV! Have owned it for about a year now and never had any real problems. The passenger window has never been able to roll down (power windows) and the switch for the cruise control broke, other than that, no engine problems at all! It is a little small for a family. Only fits 4 people comfortable, 5 is too tight. Four- wheeling is a blast! Overall I recommend this vehicle to anyone who wants a fun little car with a small family.

I bought my Pathfinder in Dec. 1999 as a bigger vehicle for my 1st born. He's almost 12 and in that time we've had noo major problems. It only has 80,000 miles (I use it mainly to commute) and is going strong, so he may end up driving it at 16! The reliability of this vehicle has been excellent. My other cars have always been Toyota's, but this Nissan has been as (if not more) reliable than the Toyota's I've owned!

This has been a reliable SUV for us. Poor gas mileage has made us trade in our other car to get one with higher gas mileage. The Pathfinder drives more like a truck due to the noise of the motor and low HP. The only two problems we have had are as follows: O2 sensor went out, and the gas tank door broke. Other than that it has been a reliable car. The leather isn't that nice and the display is kind of dated, but what do you expect from a 1999. We don't like the new Pathfinders, so we will probably trade in for a different SUV.

I bought my 1999 Pathfinder SE used with 89,000 to with replace a 1987 Pathfinder SE 4X4 5 speed with 277,000 miles. This has many more creature comforts than the '87 did. But the '87 was be more trail ready (full frame, skid plates, etc). I too had to replace the struts and shocks. I recently upgraded my tires to a set of All Terrains too. I do need to replace some weather stripping between the doors. The Bose stereo is nice, but the volume knob doesn't work right. I kinda have to pull up some so the contacts work. I also added a Sirius satellite receiver for long trips.

Got the car about midway through its life with 91K and it now has 117K. Has needed some work on brakes, rotors and exhaust in the few years I've had it but the car's reliability and utility has more than made up for it. 4x4 is a blast in the snow or offroad, and when the seats fold down you can cram an immense amount of stuff inside it. The gas mileage is not great, but on the highway I can set the cruise for 65 or so at 2800 rpm and stretch it. Overall a great truck that will treat you well if you're well to it. Has never failed me once, even during blizzards in NJ.

I bought the Pathfinder after my extensive research found Pathfinder has bulletproof reliability, good off- road capability, and ample towing capacity. Also, our past Nissan vehicles have been long lasting, trouble-free vehicles (we got 180,000+ miles on our 240SX!). With our Pathfinder, we've put many enjoyable miles (e.g., highway, around town, and offroad) on the Pathfinder...it's roomy, rides well on the highway, and can fit all our luggage plus cart around the family. Overall, we appreciate this versatile, comfortable and rugged vehicle!

I just bought this vehicle and I LOVE it! It has 175k and it still runs strong! There are some problems, nothing you wouldn't expect with a car this old with that many miles but for the price I'd say I got a pretty good deal. Lots of power and so much fun to drive. It has brand new firestone tires-can't shift into 2 hi 4 hi or 4 low due to the transfer case leaking and some other leak- so I haven't really had a chance to test the 4WD, but it's still an amazing car and it starts every morning!

I purchased this vehicle in july of 1999. It has been the most reliable automobile I have ever owned. After breaking it in I changed to Mobil 1 motor oil, got two more MPG and it has been and outstanding dependable SUV. The car has never seen the dealership for any warrantee or recalls. That is how much you can count on this car everyday. Just turn the key and no matter the weather (4X4) your on you way. Now some six years old, these SUVs are great for college students. Offering plenty of room, not bad MPG 18-20, and a strong truck frame & body to protect your young drivers. What would you like to see you student driving? A small Civic or a REAL SOLID TRUCK? Sometimes bigger is better.

After driving "domestic" cars for 14 years, I don't think I will ever go back.Started with a 1995 Maxima SE and in a little more than 1 year, was into a Pathfinder. The reliability is bar none. I am so pleased with my truck that every time something new and hot comes out, I just look in the driveway at what I have. Love it. Think I'll keep it. It may be my 12 year old's first car in a few years and I have no doubt that even with over 100,000 miles, it will still be going strong! Thanks for building such a great vehicle.

I bought a beat up, rusted 1999 pathfinder for 100 dollars a few years back. I got it with 167k on the clock. My expectations were low, I just wanted to take it through the trails a couple times. But she just would not quit. After I'd get out of class in high school, I'd immediately go and hit the local trails for hours every day. I only lived 10 minutes from my school, but ended up clocking in well over 30k miles on this thing, most of them with a wheel in the air or submerged in a swamp. I hydro locked the engine on 5 occassions. Fully floored going thru a body of water to a bang stop, 5 times. Usually taking on water once will kill an engine. After the 5th hydro lock, I drug it out. Got the water out of the cylinders and it began knocking in the way home, eventually seizing, but it got me home. I'm a car guy and have owned many cool things, but this truck, this has been the greatest thing I have ever owned, a truly awesome little machine.

I have a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder with 62,000 miles on it. It started making these rattling noises and I took it to the dealership. To make a long story short, the transmission is shot and they want to replace it. Which is about $3,000 worth of work. I have read the reviews about quality and reliability before I purchased the vehicle, turns out some of that is untrue.

When I purchased my Pathfinder, I was seeking a mid-size SUV priced under $30,000 that was reliable and had some "get-up and go". Having been a previous Honda owner, my reliability expectations were relatively high. Nissan has met those expectations up to this point. Other than standard maintenance, I haven't put any money into the vehicle. I'm at 69,000 miles and still ticking!

The only thing I have done to this vehicle, other than routine maintanence, is try to get the wheel shake out at speeds around 60mph. This is a rock solid SUV that looks great and just drives and drives and drives. If you want a vehicle that is dependable and does just what it should, I would highly recommend it. Plus they look so good cleaned up.

We really enjoy this SUV. It is not as powerful as others, but it has enough power. The build quality is unmatched by anything I've ever owned, driven, or ridden in. Outstanding quality, better to drive than the brand new Trailblazer we test-drove. And we bought it with 49k miles. The interior is as nice as my parents Mercedes SUV. Not as many gadgets, but as well constructed. My dad owned a Bravada with the same amount of miles a couple of years ago, and there is no comparison in quality. The Pathfinder may cost a little more, but well worth it. A++

I did extensive research before I purchased this vehicle, but it sure paid off! I just love driving my pathfinder! I took a trip a trip in the winter from California to Arizona (1000 miles) just after I purchased it. I was comfortable for the entire ride. But most of all, I felt safe! Especially when cruising in the snow through the pass near Flagstaff, Arizona. During that portion of the trip, I saw 4 overturned SUVs in a 1 mile stretch. I just kept plugging along in 4WD with no problems. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone! I love it as much, if not more, than my Toyota 4x4.

Bought it used and have put 40000 miles on it in 5 years. Have had to replace struts, exhaust and ignition switch. Currently have a check engine light on for sensors in the block, probably will cost $1G. I like sitting up high and instruments easily reachable. I also had that experience with the gas cap door, though mine is just out of alignment. Mileage is acceptable 18. I'm getting some rust on the exterior of the step bar outside the doors, nowhere else. Will have to replace the timing belt shortly because I have 80000 on it now. I don't know if it is the tires but I get a humming at high speeds.

This car has a great ride around town and on the back road. It cruises comfortably on the highway, but can be a little scary if you have to manuver at that speed. The 4 wheel drive system is great, but you need better tires than stock for good snow and mud traction. A high end all terrain tire in stock size will do wonders for performance. I added a cold-air intake to get a little more passing power, and it was money well spent.

I bought used in 2001 with 27,000 and now have 81,000 in March 08. It a very comfortable and reliable SUV with lots of cargo space. No major repairs but I do keep it serviced regularly at my local Nissan dealer. I changed all the fluids about a year ago as a preventive maintenance procedure. During these higher gas price times, I would like better mpg but can live with 17 overall. Highway mileage is around 20-21. I like this body style much better than the new Pathfinder. It'clean and understated which I prefer. Excellent reliability and like to drive it.

Bought this car off the lot used with 171k miles ran great for a month then both CV joints broke, Had to replace the the whole front, THE BREAK PADS LITERALLY FELL OFF! Then developed an exhaust leak, the radiator blew up had to replace that the heat stopped working, the 4x4 almost shredded the transmission, head gasket blew 4 times, need I go on? This vehicle was a headache and I only owned it 8 months barley putting 700 miles on it. But it did good in the snow that's about it.

I want to mention the "tippiness" of the SUV. I'd noticed this prior, and although I know not to speed around curves and live deep in the country, I hit one a little too fast to swerve for animals- which I ended up doing. The truck smashed into trees on drivers side, swerved too hard, went across the road, rolled over about 2/3 onto the roof, hit a tiny hill, righted itself & smashed the passenger side into a group of small trees. I had my seatbelt on & my child wasn't in the car.ALL THAT HAPPENNED TO ME WERE LARGE PAINFUL RIB BRUISES from the seatbelt. EVERY window was smashed and the passenger roof partially crumpled. You could not open the doors.

I do alot of out of town and in town driving, still the most comfortable SUV I've been in! I have the 4 wheel drive Safari Edition, and its probably the best ride I've ever had in an a 4 wheel drive vehicle, feels like a car! Great for long trips, just enough room for us, handles great in wet weather, and just an over all GREAT vehicle! I wish it got better gas milage, but I think it has to do with the oversized off road tires I've got on it, but it just looks so good, who'd take them off? I'd rather sacrafice the gas milage, than the look!

This is my first SUV, I have been married for 4 years and we have 2 children ages 3 & 2. I had a 99 ZX2 which I loved but it was getting too small. So we decided to go look for SUV's, I first drove a 2002 KIA, and I didnt like it at all. So he said for arouns the same price we have this Pathfinder, I was amazed at all the features it had and the way it rode compared to the BRAND NEW KIA. It was a leased car it was low on miles 52000, Have to get used to spending 25 dollars on gas instead of 15 and getting the same amount of mileage. ALL IN ALL ITS GREAT FOR MY FIRST SUV, I would never get another car again....

Bought this Nissan used in early 2002 with 42000 miles on vehicle. Had only one unscheduled maintenance problem, a computer chip in the polution controls, (check engine light stayed on). Have used for all types of occasions including some medium towing 3500-4000 lbs. It did and excellent job towing. At 7100 miles invested in a set in Michelins LT tires. Its like buying a new car for under$500. Milage has improved about 1 MPG.

Great Truck. Great looks as well as performance. Have driven it about 52000 miles in two years exactly and never had a problem.

I have overall been happy with my vehicle. Fuel economy is poor and HP is low, but it is fairly comfortable and has been reliable. My only mechanical problem has been a check engine light that read out as an oxygen sensor failure.

Nissan makes a great vehicle for a great price. The Vehicle does well overall in the rocks, dirt, snow, and pavement, as well as a 4 wheel drive can do without a locking differential. The performance is fantastic for it's size and cost. The only problem I have had run into is with the airconditioning unit leaking out of an O ring. Factory warranty covered it. Unfortunately SUV's are getting uglier and uglier every year. I will not look forward to upgrading.

This is my 2nd Pathy - I LOVE 'EM!!! Best SUV for the money - not too big but not a "sport cute" either. Will pass anything on the road except a gas station - fuel economy is awful. But that's not why you drive this vehicle. The 4WD is stong and generates plenty of torque (even in the high range). OEM tires(BRIDGESTONE)don't last. Really should have 16" wheels from factory with better rubber.
