Nissan ruined this car with the poor frame material they used

The Pathfinder itself as a vehicle is queen of snow and off road. It always starts and runs. Never broke down on the road. However theed very poor quality material used in the frame is apparent. I paid 4600k for it with 56k miles about 4 years ago. I have spent 6k rebuilding every part of the frame you can think of to pass inspection twice now. Not sure if it will pass this year for either frame issues or steering rod issues-1996 was recalled for rusted out steering rods but not the 1995. If you can weld then its a great off road, snow vehicle, otherwise expect to pay for some type of frame rebuild. Do not expect this it be a quiet or pretty ride-its all utility.

Great All Around

This vehicle is great to drive everywhere. From camping, to around town, to snowboarding, and on the interstate. After 220k miles she still loves to get up and go. I have (and recommend) a 5 speed, which helps with the hills and gaining speed. This was my first Nissan, and I have been impressed so far. I bought it after reading comments on this sight and have not been disappointed. Mine has not had the rust problems mentioned elsewhere, so I guess I got lucky. I gave it a tune up, new Michelin m/s all season tires and keep the oil changed. This vehicle rocks in snow. Nothing seemed to stop the four wheel drive. Great for hauling kids, camping gear, and stuff from home depot.

Can't stop it!

My Pathfinder had over 220k's on it when I bought it and it had 280k on it when I got rid of it and it doesn't owe me a penny. I had it for 3 years and it never let me down. I only had one problem and it was tricky to solve as my mechanic raised his arms and said he couldn't figure it out. (after charging me $135.00). It would start sporadically every 10 to 15 cranks. My genius brother-in law told me to raise the hood and try tuning the key. Voila! it started no problem. Turns out it was a faulty relay switch; cost me $35.00 to fix. Overall I loved having a 4x4 in the harsh Canadian winter. (Drove a dirt road to work with lots of snow-drifts.) Not a luxury ride but competent.

I bought this truck in really rough condition as my first vehicle. The exhaust leaks, the frame is rusted, the suspension is shot. But this has to be the most reliable vehicle i've ever seen! in -10 degree weather it would start right up, and plow through 3 foot snow banks in 4WD L like they weren't even there. I've never had a problem getting it started, or getting it out of rough conditions. I even used it to tow my dads huge Dodge ram 1500 back when his tranny blew. I really love my "screaming metal death trap" as I call it. weather going 65 down the highway or crawling through snow and mud, this truck gets the job done!

After my 2004 Ranger 4wd stepside was totaled by a bread truck while parked on the side of the road, I needed a vehicle asap and ran into a private owner that wanted to get rid of his 1995 4wd Nissan Pathfinder LE. Bought it with 145,000 and in good shape. It did need some TLC, other than that it has been an AMAZING purchase. Taken it camping, snow boarding and road trips. When I first got it, it only got 14mpg :( But after giving it a good tune up, swapping all fluids (diffs, transfer case etc.) to synthetic and newer exhaust I now get 20mpg :) It's a SOLID well built chassis, with some decent lux items, decent driver feed back and solid braking. A/C and heater works great!! Great SUV!!

Just purchased my 95 pathy a few months ago. Since then, I've replaced all plugs and plug cables, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, engine wiring harness (frayed wires to injectors), thermostat, a tension rod (front left broke from rust), O2 sensor, and now just found that the front right CV boot is cracked and the other is on the way. I've been turning a blind eye to the major rust on the frame. The list will never end with this truck (yours may be better). If you live in a 4 seasons kind of area (I'm in MN), I'd look for a newer model. If it weren't for the fact that I have to drive this, I'd take it back. Surprisingly, the interior is great- all the lights work, windows, etc.

I bought the car for my wife at some used car place in Jan 04. I was forced to replace the starter and belts in Nov 07, and a pulley in Dec 07. Other than that all work was routine maintenance or by choice. I have taken the car on (3) 2,000 mile round trips to CO without a problem. I have also taken the car on some pretty serious four wheeling trips for a stock car and it also did extremely well. The 4 wheel dive does great on the roads too, I drove over Vail & Eisenhower pass in a blizzard at 55 mph with ease!

One of my favorite things about my 1995 Nissan Pathfinder LE 4X4 is how rugged and reliable it is. Being 16 I have done a lot of stupid stuff to this truck and its still fine. It has a very good four wheel drive system but don't let it go to your head because I found out the hard way that it doesn't mean your invincible. When I first purchased my pathfinder I had a few things done. The Speedometer didn't work so I got that fixed, Changed the Transmission fluid, Changed the Oil and got new tires. I love my pathfinder and I made a great choice.

I bought this truck slightly used and have put over 120,000 miles on it over the last 7 years. A few problems were fixed before the warranty ran out (speedometer replaced and exhaust pipes replaced) and I recenty bought a new transmission. The engine still runs great, and I'll be disappointed if I don't get to 200,000 miles. I continually get compliments for how well it's holding up. Overall a great ride.

the car is fun to drive and handles great. mine had a host of problems almost immediately after the warranty expired , no speedometer/odometer, transmission failure at 90,000 miles, new brakes (not pads) three times already as well as shocks. this car has primarily been used for highway driving. probably won't buy another Nissan pathfinder at least. oh, and it can't tow anything.

Purchased in 1996 with only 25,000 miles (prior rental). After reading most the reviews I now feel I was one of the few who bought a lemon. Unfortunately I have one frustrating problem after another with expensive repair bills. Transmission replaced 2 times! Many electrical problems. Trouble starting in hot weather. Dash warning lights stay on after replacing alternator $300. Don't feel stable around corners sometimes feel car will tip. Spare tire inside takes up a lot of cargo space. No functional drink holders. Spring loaded rear door crashes on your head unless you hold it up. I really like they style of the pathfinder and am wondering if newer ones have fewer mechanical problems?

I bought this truck in 99 because a comparable 4 runner was approx 3-4k more. It has been an excellent truck with only 1 major issue (trans) I left it sit outside a couple of salty Illinois winters and that killed the body. Runs awesome, bad a/c lousy mpg, very reliable, eats front brakes, looks cool. The trans would not go into reverse and cost 2250.00 to fix. I still have it with 150k cost me 9k in 1999 and its 2009 not bad considering everything. would buy another just watch for frame rust in rear on midwest and east coast vehicles.

I like the car over all, it will get me where I need to go, but the acceleration and top speed are pretty bad. I have to do alot of work to mine, iv had to replace the brakes twice, the brakes aren't very good. Its peppy, but not a performance car in any way. The problems I have with the car are all small. Only big problem I've had was with the headlights. The previous owner ran wires directly from the headlight wire to something else(haven't followed wire) and the fuse would blow when headlights were turned on, I disconnected the wires and problem was gone. The safety issue was plastic burning when headlights were on, possible fire in steering wheel... wouldn't have been good. happy w/ car overall

I have owned my 95 SE Pathfinder for over 4 years, and have not had any problems AT ALL (knock wood) since purchased. It's not the fastest out there, but the ride is good up to 75 mph. I want to buy a new SUV but can't justify it (buying). This (95) was the Last year before the major changes, so this is a tried and true truck, with a 10 + reliability rating!

Overall good experience with my Pathfinder. A few problems every now and then, but then again, it's almost 10 years old. Very reliable. I'm envious of other performers however; not enough horsepower for hills when I'm trying to maintain speed. It also drinks gas like water.

This is the 4th new vehicle I've had, and it has been the best! I agree that you can get a lemon from any make, I have leased a Nissan Quest which turned out to be a lemon (promptly returned). This car has seen a wrench only once in 7 years (brake pads), and has aged gracefully despite my harsh pounding.

Had a long review written, but the system said it was too long (despite what the character box said), then it all deleted. Basically, original owner, just turned 100,000. Still love to drive this car. Did have a problem with the exhaust manifold, also a recent computer glitch that the dealer can't find a reason for and has to reset. Turns like an 18-wheeler. I live in a hilly area with snowy winters and have NEVER been stranded. Great peace of mind with a family. Also, my wife is small and this was the only SUV we looked at that she could drive comfortably. Wish Nissan would go back to this style, don't like the new PFs as much.

This is my fourth Pathfinder. Purchased in 2004, with aprx 85K miles on it. Currently has aprx 150K, and going strong. No major problems, just normal/routine maintenance. Love the car, but selling to get a newer one. Gas mileage is OK for an older SUV. Nice looking car, love the 4x4, cargo room, roomy front seats, how it handles in snow. This is one exceptionally reliable and rugged work horse! With 150K it still runs like a top and expect it could easily go another 150K+.

All these kind of NISSAN model have the same particular of major problems. There are two major design problem that customers kept encounter on: First is in the manifold (main muffler separated between engine) This type of problems can cost us a fortune to be fix. The second problem is THE TRANSMISSION because of the overheated TRANS. OIL which could put a big hole on consumer products faulty of bad design.

I got my Pathfinder from my mother, it was her 2nd and she's currently on her 3rd, when my Ford completely broke down. I absolutely love this car! My parents drove it for 5 years before I got it. I love the way it looks and drives, very tough. I have only had a couple problems with it, had to get the transmissiong rebuilt, new wiring harness for the mass airflow sensor, and my tach doesn't work, some sensor is out. I also have some funny things happen in cold weather, the door locks start locking whenever they want. Nothing else too major. I have put like 38,001 miles on it since I got it and it's still awesome!

I bought this vehicle in NC with 65K miles in 99 and I just traded it in for another SUV in early 08 with over 199K miles. The only problem I ever had with the Pathfinder was the transmission. It wouldn't shift to "reverse" so I had to replace it in 04. Other than that, I had absolutely NO problems with it - I never had to fix or replace anything (other than routine maintenance). My odometer and speedometer worked improperly beginning in late 05 (probably b/c I hit a light pole) but passed inspection anyway. The actual mileage was 200K+ due to an odometer malfunction b/c I hit a light pole. Traded it in b/c of long commute, harsh NY winter, and I didn't want to put more money into new tires.

The last of the great SUVs

This is my second Pathy. The first was a 1994 SE 4x4, which I purchased in Maine. The frame, unknown to me at the time of purchase, was severely rusted. Parts of it could be crushed with my hand. Despite this (common) issue the Pathy tore through everything I threw at it for several years. And I threw a lot at it. Sadly I got to the frame too late (rhino lined it) and it literally rusted out around the vehicle. Otherwise I can guarantee it would have seen 300k+ miles. After moving to Texas (drove original Pathy here) I purchased a 95 Pathfinder with only 89k miles on it. I actually purchased it sight unseen from Iraq, that's how confident I am in the quality of these vehicles. It's still my daily driver fourteen years later. I can't even begin to describe how bad I beat this truck into the ground, and yet it never fails to get me where I need to go. And thanks to a 2001 Frontier I purchased last year (POS) I've learned to repair just about anything, so should my Pathy ever need anything in the future (many years from now) I'll be able to keep it going. Thank God too, because these modern autos are complete garbage! Man... I could talk about these Pathfinders for hours... NOTE: I seen a lot of folks listing the Pathfinder's lack of cup holders as con. Ignore these idiots. The Pathfinder has two retractable cup holders on the bottom of the center console lid. They're not the greatest, but they're there, and they get the job done.

I bought my Pathfinder in 07/99 with about 65K miles. With over 200K miles as of 07/07, it's still going and runs as great as the day I got it! The engine refuses to give me any problems! I love this vehicle because it fits well with any lifestyle and looks good at any occasion. There is one small spot where the paint is fading on the hood, but otherwise, the exterior paint is still in remarkably good condition. Transmission was replaced (wouldn't shift to reverse) in '04 and front axle was replaced in early '07. Otherwise, no major issues whatsoever. I've put very little money into upkeep. Regular oil changes, limiting off-road use, and taking it easy on the gas pedal worked for me!

Pros: no major mechanical problems so far. 4WD is great in the snow, it can be used up to 60 mph. Always starts up immediately, even in sub-zero temps. Gas mileage is ok for an older suv. Cons: extremely high engine, wind, and road noise. Poor acceleration for the engine size. Speedometer, odometer stopped working and cost several hundred dollars to repair. Rear seats are awkward to sit in. Cupholders are in a very strange location... any cups get in the way when shifting. Spare tire takes up about 1/3 of the trunk space.

I wrote the same review dated 03/13/07, and just wanted to give an update. The frame rusts/rots on these vehicles. Be careful when looking for one. Check the frame behind the fuel tank. Also check under the rear seats (lift them up and check for rust). 94 models may not have this problem, as the frames are made from a different source, however this year model (1995) are prone to frame rot. In 2007 I had very little rust, when I wrote the previous review. In 2008, lots of rust, and my rear bumper, along with fuel tank wanted to leave without me. I am decreasing build quality, down to a 1.

Never owned a vehichle that sailed through inspections 3 years in a row with nothing needed like this one. I live in central Pennsylvania and this puppy handles the mountains and snow better than any truck or jeep I've experienced. Never got it stuck; plows through DEEP snow in 4wd. I've had my 95 SE PAthy for 3 and 1/2 years, and I still love it. It looks great, and runs well. But there are a couple of weak spots. The automatic transmissions are prone to failure requiring a rebuild. This can be avoided by installing an aftermarket trans cooler and disconnecting the stock on. The step bars rust through fairly quickly, but are easy to remove. And the truck looks much better without them.

No major problems maintenance with the truck. The engine and drivetrain are great. Fun to drive with a great 4x4 system. FRAME RUST IS A REAL PROBLEM. IT WILL NOT PASS A STATE SAFETY INSPECTION ANYMORE. Exhaust manifold leaks and always has. Been thru numerous alternators. Had to replace both front drive shafts. After 9 years, it will be scrapped - frame is rusted so bad it will likely break at the rear axle.

I really like my suv, no way near top ten by today's standards but considering that this is '95, it's great. The truck is very capable for offroading and towing use (within limitation). Don't tow something that out weights the truck... big safety issue. But as for offroad climbing, it's very fun. My Pathy is pretty stock and I can climb most moderate level trails in socal area. I only have LSD and not lockers.

This SUV was given to me by my father and I love it. I have had it since 1998 and it currently has 138,000 miles and still rolling strong. Snow is never a problem and the highway is a great cruise. Changed the stereo needed a cd player and did some minor work like brakes, tires, oil changes, tune-ups, but nothing major. Gas milage could be better since I drive it to work and it only gets 15 miles/gallon but If you need a work horse this is your car. I expect it to get me to 200,000 miles easy.

I bought my pathfinder with just over 200k miles and so far, overall, I have really enjoyed this vehicle. After I bought it I did the normal upgrades: new belts, water pump, brakes, and wires/plugs which I did myself. The cost of the repairs were not outrageous (use an independent mechanic, not nissan) and the engine runs very strong. It now has just over 210K miles. I have a manual trans. as this gives me the power I want when I want it. I put Michelin M/S all terrain tires on and I can go anywhere in 4wheel drive. It drives great in snow and up into the mountains as well as the highway. It is a comfortable ride and drives well.

I recommend Nissan. I had this truck in service just about every 3K miles and can say that is why i have had no problems with it.

I have owed my 1995 Nissan Pathfinder for just over 9 years. I have owed 7 different brand vehicles (BMW, SAAB, Toyota, Chevy, GMC, Mazda, and Ford) and it, by far, has been the best quality and dependable vehicle I have owed (a close second was the Toyota owned). I intend to drive it until it stops, which by the way it is running, will be a while.

This is one great truck. Its a little small on the inside but the comfort level is great. I bought it with 90K. I owned it for over 2 years and 15,000 more miles and never had to do one maintenance job. Just be good with your oil changes and it will treat you great!

I bought my 1995Nissan Pathfinder as a second vehicle to haul my dogs. It is roomy enough for two with seats down. it is a good, tough, reliable truck. I baby it but am first putting on normal mileage after seven years of less than normal miles. At 38,000 miles I replaced poor General Inc tires (OEM). Those tires were terrible. I replaced them with Michelin All Terrain & I love 'em. At 55,000 miles (eight years old) I replaced the front brakes, rotors, calipers & boots. This was not a big deal considering the mileage & age fo the truck. At 63,000 miles (nine years old) I replaced the alternator (expensive...$300 just for parts). Despite this normal maintenance, I am very satisfied with its toughness & durability. it is a good value.

Best reliability of any make

This was my second Pathfinder, I had a '93 prior to this truck. I purchased my second because of the first's excellent dependability. I put 50,000 miles on the '93 model, and 110,000 on the '95, and the only repairs that I had to make were normal ones, like brakes, tires, belts, etc. i did have the exhaust manifold leak on both, it was repaired once under warranty. This truck is great off road with its limited slip differential, great seats, and is very cheap to own. Aside from the lack of power, and poor fuel economy, it was a great vehicle. I almost bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee instead because I wanted more HP, but didn't dare because of the poor reliability, and I made the right choice.

I can't say enough good things about my 1995 Nissan Pathfinder. I love the classic styling, although some say it's boxy I don't care. The back doors are too small, but the seating is comforable. The rear seats recline and I love that! If you are looking for a reliable inexpensive SUV look no further, its right here. Forget about Chevrolet Blazers and Ford Explorers. They don't hold a candle to the Pathfinder.

Very Dependable - My second Pathfinder

This is my second Nissan Pathfinder SE 4x4 (Also had a '90 model). I have put about 75,000 miles on it in and have had VERY few, minor problems (burst radiator hose, etc.). Many people complain about bad gas mileage and excessive brake wear. However, if that's your main concern, I would suggest that you not purchase an SUV of any make. The excess weight is to blame, and is unfortunately unavoidable.

I just bought my pathfinder two days ago it has a little over two hundred and ten thousand miles on it. I work at a car dealership and they tell me the car is in excellent shape, its a 5speed manual, it shifts and drives great! the only thing it needs is one brake calipor and the cv joints in the front. But overall this car is a perfect 10! If you want a great truck that is dependable no matter how many miles you have on it this is the truck for you! I know I really love it, and i'll be sure to reccomend it to anoyone!

I had this truck for two years and I loved every minute of it. I was always reliable and no matter what I did to it, it always started. As long as it was taken care of. Really fun to offroad with.

I love my truck. When I drive other cars, sure I love the zippiness of them, but when I get back in my truck, I love the feel of being in command of a ...truck. I feel right with the world. I have 209,000 miles on my truck.
