Inherent transmission problem with '06 Maxima

jaware, 07/12/2013

As others have stated - there is an inherent transmission problem with the '06 Maxima and other years as well. At 62k miles my transmission started to slip and the car jerked when shifting. I brought my car to a local transmission shop and they told me this is a common problem with Nissan vehicles. On their suggestion, I opened a case with Nissan customer affairs. They instructed me to bring it to the dealership for inspection and guess what? My car needs a new valve body and transmission for an estimated cost of $6,000 - a gross over estimate! Nissan contacted me to say they would offer no assistance. Everyone with a similar problem must join the class action suit underway!

I bought a 2006 Nissan Maxima in 2008 with low miles from a dealership. By the time it hit 72,000 miles, the transmission was jerking. I called the dealer who said the warranty was up, so they could not help me. What? R U kidding? I've had two Maximas a 1998 and a 1999 that performed well over 200k miles. I called headquarters who told me to get a diagnosis from Nissan service only which costs $130. Service rep said I need another tranny which would cost $3,000's . that's for a rebuilt transmission. Waiting for headquarters to take action.

This car is so much fun to drive. With that said, we have had so many problems with it. The sunroof took 7 tries to repair, the A/C went out, struts replaced, paint is chipping off rear view mirror on the garage door button, rotors are shot, front dash rattles, steering column gets stuck in the upright position, and today my check engine soon light came on. I baby this car and I am a very mild driver. Maybe I just got a lemon, but we are trading it for an Infiniti G35x because they seem to be getting much better reviews. Good luck if you purchase this this vehicle. Hope yours won't be a lemon. I loved driving it, too bad it spends just as much time in the shop as it does on the road. :-(

I bought this car 7 years ago. It has been so good to me. Thank God I have no problems with mine. I take good care of my car. I literally pray before I get a car and prayed that my Nissan will not give me major problems. Till this day I still have it. Has not given me major problems and i truly love it! Love the inside and out! I have driven this car far places, drives great. Overall its the best car I have ever own.

Shopping for a new car and just for kicks thought I would check out the reviews on my 2006 Maxima, can't believe so many people have had similar problems...let me see if anyone can top these, at 2 years my catalytic converter went out, at 3 years my transmission went out (right b4 warranty expired), my motor mounts have broken twice, oh yeah at 4 years my throttle body went out, end of 4th year my timing chain and air conditioner went out...now for my 5th yr anniversary my struts and suspension are out!!! I have spent well over 8k in repairs and maintanence....i am broke and now cannot afford to keep putting $$ into it, so am forced to get a new car or even buy a used one =(

I have a 2006 Nissian Maxima and Ive been had this car for about 4 years now, I start experiencing problems with it last year after my warranty was up. First of all the AC went out and begun to blow hot air and costed me over $300 to get fixed then about January when I reached about 72,000 miles my car began to Jerk and take about 4-5 seconds to go into drive, reverse, etc. So I took it to the Nissan dealer and had them do a dianostic check about 3 times and they told me nothing was wrong so I got my transmission serviced around March and the jerking stopped and now it has started back and now my transmission has gone out and is costing me about $3,000 to get fixed. POOR QUALITY IM UPSET!!!!

I have a 2006 Maxima w/ 104K miles that is having the same jerking issues. In Aug 2011, the car lurched and jumped so bad in traffic while slowing down. It also happens whenever I am pulling from a stop light or reversing. This issue continued and sometime I have to stop the car because I thought I was going to get into an accident. Since this appears after the car is driven for about 15 minutes, I will let the car sit for a while before I drive it again. It will drive fine for a few miles and start lurching again. I took the car to our local Nissan dealer and needed to pay $105 for an inspection. I tried to tell them the prob. but they acted they didnt what i was saying! Dont buy Nissan

Transmission Issues

I brought this car brand new in 2006. Around 40,000 miles the transmission started to slip. I called the dealership and of course they said there are no issues with the transmission, this is the first time we've heard of this, yeah right. Called 1-800-Nissan but they weren't any help either. I had all my service records but I just didn't get the car serviced at the dealership so they said there was nothing they could do since the dealership didn't service the car. 82000 miles in rush hour traffic the transmission goes completely out. The car was towed to the dealership who gave me a discount and put in a new transmission for $3,200.

Hello Guys. For those who have the hard shift problems of your transmission. The fix is about $65. Find shifter kit on eBay. Watch YouTube video on how to fix the 3 selenoids and your car will be running again smoothly. Average time 3-4 hrs. Do take apart the valve assembly because it's only the selenoids. This is a problem from not changing the transmission fluids. You will need mechanical knowledge to do this fix. Hope this helps.

2006 Nissan Maxima Tranny Problem -- NOT TRANSMISSION

I bought my 2006 Maxima with 58K miles on it. Like many others, I started noticing gear shifting (auto trans) at about 98K miles, so I took it to the dealership that honored the warranty before it expired. They recommended I try a transmission flush, before the warranty company comes back and says I neglected to service my vehicle and refuses to pay for the transmission replacement. Which I did and it DID NOT fix the issues I was having (high RPM rev at random speeds, car slamming into gear, jarring forward out of 1st & reverse). Months passed and my car was in and out of the dealership shop trying one thing or another to resolve the problem. Eventually my warranty expired and surprise….I was on my own with repair cost! After several near death experiences due to the jarring and loss of acceleration at high rates of speed….I called a transmission shop that was recommended to me. Within 2 minutes of explaining the issues, he said “it’s not your transmission….it’s the Valve Body”. He explained to me that the transmissions are pretty solid (used in several models) and that the valve body is the “electronic brain” of the transmission. Even if you replace the transmission (not rebuild it), it will mostly continue to do the same things, since you never fixed the “electronic brain”. So speaking from experience in dealing with the same problems with my 2006 Maxima that many, many others have and are dealing with…DO NOT replace or rebuild your transmission and waste $5000 before you try the least expensive and most likely the cause of the issues (VALVE BODY), for $1500.00!! 

Was driving a '01 Accord, got bored and wanted a change. So I purchased this car on St. Pattys Day in '09 with 57xxx miles on it. Got a good deal on the car. At first I loved my new car. But then it changed. QUICK. I heard of the transmission problems but figured that it wouldn't happen to me. Well it did. Shortly after that I had to replace all 4 tires 2 times. With 18'' factory tires aren't going to be cheap. Add the Z rating, now tires won't last long at all. After the tires came the headlights. $200 for all the lights up front to be changed. Next was the struts, shocks, bearings ect. $1200 later. Now I am in need to replace the timing belt. Car is a money pit.

I bought this car used from my father about 3 month ago. The dealers were trying to fleece him on trade in value for a new vehicle. My family was growing and I needed a larger second vehicle. I was looking for a larger sedan with safety and reliability, but with some HP and was fun to drive. After looking at the new sedans (2010-2012) on the market I could not find a vehicle that had all of the features of the 2006 Maxima and under 25K. I was aware of the transmissions problems of the Maxima, fortunately, I knew the history of this Maxima and the transmission has not been a problem. If worse comes to worse, I'll be out 3K instead of 25K+ price tag of new vehicle with less quality.

I bought my car last year in November, a 2006 Maxima. With just a little over 100,000 miles on it.. And only 2days after I purchased it, the transmission started to slip. Cause a massive jerk when I put the car into drive. I have taken to several dealerships and shops to have it tested and everyone keeps telling me that there's absolutely nothing wrong with my car. It had an "as is" sign in it so they would not take it back. It has been nothing but a headache since I bought the car. And it still jerks very hard. My Altima is a much better car in my opinion. And much more reliable.. So, I'm stuck with a 10,000 dollar car that runs like crap!!

i got this car when it had about 130,000 on it. it drove fine when i first got it. was never the smoothest driving car, but nothing to be concerned over. after having it and driving it small amounts (around 20 miles a day-to and from school) it started acting up. it all started when the car was in reverse. sometimes when i was shifting from reverse to drive it would hesitate to shift, and when it did the transmission would jump..HARD. like enough to sling you forward. this didn't happen too often, maybe once or twice a week at first. it did this for about 1.5 months. i had spoken to my mechanic and he told me that it sounded like the valve body but to continue to drive it so he could know for sure. well about a month after he had told me this is when it got bad. i could only drive the car till it "warmed up", so for about 15 minutes until the transmission would stick. after 15 minutes the RPMS would go to about 4 or 5 before the car would shift. and when it finally did shift it would knock so hard you almost got whiplash. there were times where i would be merging onto the highway and the car wouldn't shift and i would not have enough time to speed up because my car wasn't shifting. i got my valve body replaced and still continued to have these problems. the mechanic told me that my car had to adjust to a new transmission part and keep driving. while i was waiting for my car to 'adjust' i continued to drive it, as some days it would shift well and others it would shift very hard. one night i had gone out with friends and left my car while i rode in my friends car. when i got back to my car, the doors wouldn't unlock. i tried to unlock it with the key and with the keyfob but it wouldn't budge. i left it there overnight and came back in the morning and had to get AAA to get my doors unlocked. turns out my locks went out and as a security measure, my windows would unroll themselves (for what reason, i don't know) so i had to continuously play with my windows for 20 minutes just to get them to roll up, and make sure i didn't unroll them again. i could also not lock my car at this time. after this my sunroof wouldn't work and had a leak in it from the time i bought it. but it leaked out through the sunglass holder...not sure how. by this point i got rid of the car. after putting over 8,000 into this car i only got about 1/4 of that and only had the car for about 8 months or so.....please...don't ever buy this car.

I purchased a 2006 Maxima about 2 years ago. Within that 2 years, I've repaired the airconditioning unit, replaced the transmission, and replaced the catalytic converter. Nissan won't do anything, even though these are common problems! I've put thousands of dollars into this car. I loved it when I bought it and I thought I'd be a Nissan owner for life, but now I know I'll never purchase another one!! This was so not worth the money, I'm very disappointed.

Have the manual transmission and have just loved this car for 7 years. Unfortunately Nissan had some major transmission issues. My car had the entire engine, transmission and cats replaced under warrantee just before it expired. Time to get rid of the car cause I anticipate the issues resurfacing. It has been a great sport sedan with the power and acceleration being the best features. The engine is silky smooth.

On the day of the delivery I experienced steering wheel "shimmy" or vibration at two different speeds and despite 4 trips to the dealership, some improvement but not complete elimination of the problem. I understand steering wheel locks may be an issue (found that on the Edmunds site) and will try that....love the car, dislike the service I experienced.

I loved this car for its size, comfort, and handling, but the plastic timing chain that cost me $1,200 every other year, uncontrollable engine flares and hesitations for the second half of its life bothered me. The result of the class-action lawsuit was a rebate on buying a new one - no thanks. I came to the conclusion that to design something so blatantly fragile to such an important part of the car was inexcusable. Honda or Toyota would simply never have done it. Sadly I will never trust a Nissan again. Too risky. Good riddance.

This is my 2nd Maxima. I had an '02 SE for over four years. This one soundly beats that one in terms of features, comfort and performance. There are some areas where this one falls way short in comparison though. Mainly, the build quality of the interior stinks. Very cheap. You can really tell where Nissan was pinching pennies. I've had issues with the exterior finish as well. Due to all the squeaks and rattles I'm planning on trading for an '07 Acura TL after keeping this car for only one year.

I took a march 2006 delivery on this Black with dark grey cloth seats Nissan SE as a commuter and 2nd car. The only options were the mats, spoiler and the sunroof. It has been in the shop 3 times to replace the front right struts (it is now Oct. 06). There is a rattling in the steering that the dealer cannot seem to fix. It is fine for straight highway cruising but forget having fun in the twisties. This car get nervous and sloppy real fast. It's a psuedo sports car. While the exteriror styling is beautiful the body panel are soft and thin. Subject to the slightest dings. With the mecahnical problems and the sloppy handling I can't wait to get rid of it.

A week after buying this car in July '12, I took it back, since it had been driving badly. After about 15 minutes of driving, the engine would rev to over 4k RPM's and then jerk hard, even slamming me back into my seat. When it did it for my husband, he insisted there was definitely a problem with the tranny. Not slipping, but rather shifting hard. My dealer waited for Nissan to respond, and of course, Nissan refused to participate. So when my dealer offered to put in a re-built tranny, it also turned out to be bad. Now waiting on Nissan rep to come investigate. Disgusted that Nissan makes a car and only stands behind it for a few years. I now wish they would stand in front of it!

1st thing first,....I bought this car brand new and had no problems UNTIL my 4th year (2010). The AC unit went out ($897),....HID lights turned pink and went out ($426) and now........(infamous drumroll),..........the transmission is bad, LOL! No, its not funny at all and my head is still spinning to the tune of $2500 repair bill that was freshly printed today. WOW is all I can say. On my way back from the shop,..this guy in traffic asked me if the car was good (as he's picking one up this week), I told him "nah man this car is a piece of junk, DON'T DO IT! 111k miles, 13 more payments and transmission problems are all I have to show for this car!

I compared the Maxima, Acura TL, Accord, and G35. It came down to the Maxima and TL. For a comparably equipped car, the TL was about $2000 more. I loved the way of them drove, so I picked the Maxima becuase it was a little bit more roomy and cheaper. I really like this car. The power and luxury (I got all the bells and whistles) combo is great. I have had no initial quality problems and don't expect to have any. I find this car to be a great highway cruiser, but the real fun is how it performs on winding back roads. The acceleration, handling and braking are excellent. I don't see what all the fuss is about torque steer. 265 hp with front wheel drive is pushing the limits (but fun)

I started out shopping for an Acura TSX. Hated it. Drove the Maxima and it was love. We recently had to take a LONG, LONG trip and the car's comfort and performance were out of this world. Even at my high altitude and up and down the mountainous road I am still getting up to 30 mpg on highway. I really don't have one bad thing to say about my car. I just love the looks, I love the handling and I love the power.

This car lives up to its expectations. It's fun to drive. The 3.5L engine is preppy, and very responsive. The ride is very comfortable. Plenty of interior room. The trunk is huge. Step aside, Accord and Camry..!!

I bought my 2006 Maxima slightly used in late 2006 with 15k miles on it. Everything was great for the first couple of years. Did go through two sets of tires though. At 72k miles the A/C began blowing hot air. A couple of months later, the transmission went out (hard shift between gears). A couple months after that a fuel leak and cracked motor mounts. The good news is I'm now at 80k and am just replacing the brakes. There is also a hollow metal sound coming from the car. Fortunately I bought a great extended warranty (that expires in Nov.) that has picked up everything but the A/C. Come Dec. I will likely get rid of the car since it's too expensive to repair.

I got this car from an auction. It drives well, Spacious and the features are comparable to that of an E-class. I bought this car because it was the right balance between a luxury and an everyday car. The car looks great especially with the 18" chrome with black leather interior on black ext. It would have been nice if they got rid of the handbrake, included an mp3 player with AUX, an automatic trunk shut system. Very noisy if music not on blast, suspension is a bit rough bt I love this car. And dnt regret one bit! If you are looking at buying this car, go all out, and get all options other than that get an ALTIMA..

I have been wanting a Maxima. Finally found one, exact color I wanted and feel like I got a good deal. Bought one that was a lease. Much better deal than buying a brand new one. The turning radius in not huge, but I can live w/that. Not used to the way the transmission does (maybe that's the way the Max is). Very good looking car on outside. Gets a lot of looks.

I have been looking to purchase the Nissan Maxima since 2004 when the new exterior was introduced. Finally in 2005, I decided to buy the 2006. This car looks and drives great. I get so many complements. It's luxury without the luxury price.

I bought my car 4/06. since then i have replaced struts, ac compressor, tie rods, head lights. knocking sound on right and the service men at nissan cant figure out what it is. constantly being aligned. front grill chipped up. it is very sporty and fun to drive but cant enjoy the drive for having to replace tires so often which are way to expensive. a headlamp cost me $186. oh not to mention the motor mounts keep breaking. guess you can say i got a lemon too. will never ever buy another one. im maxed out on funds keeping this junk running!

I'm a longtime Nissan buyer and owned a few older Nissan maximas, which all where great to drive. The 5th generation Maxima is all that you could hope for in a car. I love the maximas power, options, sat radio, nav, bluetooth, handling and style. For the money you get a great deal. If you want more, then Infiniti is the way to go. A side note Nissan changes body style very often so when 6th generation maxima comes out you will lose some value in your car if you pop in and out of cars. But the maxima 2006 is a great buy and a good long term car. So if you go to Nissan test drive a Maxima and I bet it will be hard to leave the dealership without one. Stay Nissan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love my car. All it need is the Bluetooth audio feature and I'll be happier. I even take my car on road trips with no issues. I bought it with 86k miles in November 2016 and right now I'm at 110k in June 2017. This car does suck on making tight U-turns. That's my only issue with the car.

I have driven Nissan's for 15 years....Pathfinders, 300ZX, Altima, and now a new Maxima..what a dream. Handles like a sportscar, but appointed and comfortable like a luxury sedan. While I miss a manual shift, the tip-tonic is fun, although it is easier just to use the drive selection in auto. Decent mileage, large tank and regular gas make it very affordable to run for this type of car.

We purchased our Maxima in March 2006. I commute 100 miles each day, so we have put a lot of miles on this car; currently just over 100,000. The only thing I have had done is replace the tires two times, oil change, and replaced both headlight bulbs. Unfortunately, most people will need to have the dealer replace the headlight bulb. My wife and I both love driving this car!

This was my 3rd Maxima. No real issues. Have a 3 year lease and turning it back in and lease an 09 Had to replace OEM (Continental) tires at 26K even with Nissan dealership rotating at 5k intervals. Front brakes are ready to be replaced at 34K. Cruise control is very inconsistent especially on down hill situations. Engine is starting to run a little rough at 35K. I have no regrets with the vehicle. It was a very safe and reliable car for my wife to drive.

Amazing to read all of the posts with similar issues. The tires wear out quickly, AC is out, headlight replacement costs over $100 and now the transmission goes! 120K on this car and replacing the tranny, hope to get another year or two out of it. Great looking car and I love the zip but I can't imagine going with another Maxima again.

2006 Nissa Maxima-Disappointment, Costly

So, like everyone else that seems to be writing reviews, my 2006 Maxima had transmission issues. I'll start at the beginning (which wasn't long ago). I bought the car for $12,000 from a used car dealership less than six months ago with 117,000 miles. I loved the car. It was one of the nicest cars I ever bought. I also bought a 2002 Altima brand new (loved it). Two weeks ago the transmission started slipping between 2 and 3rd gear and it would downshift when I let up on the gas. Also, the Service Engine Soon light came on. Took it in and low and behold, Transmission was all but gone and the catalytic converter was needing replaced. Out of luck the dealer told me. Traded for a 2010 Chev Impa

The engine is great. The equipment attached to it is weak. I have had to replace the transmission, the computer box, the power steering pressure hose, the power steering box the radio, the power attachments for cellphone hookup do not work, The sunroof is faulty, works when it wants too. The time waiting for parts to repair is unbelieveable. The windows are not made to keep out the road noise. this car has been in the shop more times than my 1999 Durango which has 274000 miles. and is More reliable than my 2006 Max with 164000 miles. I have owned an 1989 Maxima, and the clutch kept going out. It is in the shop now for a new steering unit. I cannot make my money without it. I am going out to buy another car. It will not be a Nissan. I would not recommend it unless it is a truck.

We have driven Chevrolets for 50 yrs. and went for a test drive in the Altima and my wife liked it, just as we were leaving we spotted the Maxima and drove it away. We have 11,000 miles on it now and are averaging 27mpg. Nissan has been great with their service.

The wife and I took delivery of our '06 Maxima SL (pearl white, tan leather, and functional sunroof - LOADED) after driving numerous family sedans. Came close to deciding on the '06 Altima (V6) UNTIL we drove the Maxima -- it sold itself! Awesome looks and drives like a dream. Our deal was 2% over invoice, which came out to be approx. $560 over -- very pleased with that deal! Our salesman was never, ever pushy and let us make our own decision about buying a vehicle and the time we took to decide.

This car is very quiet in driving. The transmission has a smooth start, no jerking into 1st gear. The interior has a very comfortable seat. The dash board and accessories are a pleasure to see and use. The engine has a sufficient am't of HP. Engine design is very nice and clean. When driving at higher speeds, the ride is very smooth. The Nissan models have a reputation of having mileage of upto 300,000 mi.
