Gotta Love It
I considered several other cars before purchasing this one. Some of the cars that I thought about were the Infiniti I30/I35, Lexus ES300, and the BMW 528i. I chose the Max because for the money I got everything I wanted plus more and I saved thousands by not buying the others. The car is fun to drive, has a great stereo system, and looks awesome. With the AE my max stands out from other Maxima owners because of the subtle extra features such as the ground effects kit and 20th Anniversary badges. Both of my roommates have Lexus GS400's and I have their approval with the Max, and they are the hardest critics I know!
Glad I bought this
Bought this car primarily for the engine, reliability reputation and the handsome interior. None has disappointed. The brakes were poorly manufactured however. Although the car stops well, (24,000 miles so far), the rotors already had to be turned. This was done N/C as there is a technical service bulletin for the warping of the rotors. Also, the ride may be a bit harsh for some but I did buy the SE model for its sports car like handling. I would buy this car again.
Not very happy with car
This car has the turning radius of a semi. It also has a very rough ride.
Best in class
This car is just best in its class. For under-30K price middle-to-full size sedan it makes perfect choice for mid-age family man.
Incredible car
No problems after ten months.
Awesome
I have owned 5 Nissan's and I am convinced that these vehicles are reliable. When I test drove the 2001 Maxima, I knew this would be my sixth. It is an incredibly reliable, safe, and, powerful car. I chose the five-speed manual GXE, and it is awesome. This car is definately the best bang for your buck!
Good Car, Bad Dealer
Got a "good" deal for this 2001 Maxima in 2002, but very disappointed with the dealer. They promised 0% APR then backed out. They promised "lifetime" oil change (twice a year) when we purchased it. We called last week to verify the offer, and the salesperson told us to come in. This morning my wife brought the car in and they told her that there is no such deal. Disgusting place, this Crescent City Nissan in New Orleans.
The best family sport sedan under $30K
After driving this car for a year, here's what a test drive won't tell you: 1. The suspension is not so stiff as it might first appear. Over time I have found the ride to be quite smooth. 2. Ergonomics of the console are a marvel. 3. Design of the cabin is very airy and inviting. 4. 200 watt Bose sound system is wonderful. 5. Steering feel a bit heavy. 6. Look forward every day to driving. Don't regret passing over the Passat.
Best car I ever had
I've only had it 6 weeks, so reliability not tested yet - but Consumer Reports says it's one of the best. The car is fun to drive, comfortable, powerful. My family enjoys it. Driving on mountain roads is a real treat. Hugs the highway, acceleration leaves other vehicles standing still. The sound system is excellent. Bought a new Toyota Camry in 1989, loved it, but the Maxima is even better. Best kept secret of fun cars.
First review
Good car, poor dealerships. Ride is too firm for passengers but road handling is excellent. Fuel economy is very good, city and highway, even with regular gas. Every accessory still works.
2001 Nissan Maxima SE
My 2001 Maxima SE has been an excellent vehicle. The engine is great, build quality and comfort are top notch. I love driving this car!
Great Max
When it came time to replace my '93 Maxima (with 175,000 miles on it) it only made sense to give Nissan another try -- and boy am I glad I did. The 2001 Max is better in every way - bigger, roomier, faster, and more powerful. It's comfortable for long trips, has great front and rear passenger room, and the V-6 is one of the best on the planet.
Great Car
Great First vehicle... bought it from an auction for $1400 with on 162,000 miles back in July “19. The only thing ive done to it while i had it was preventative maintenance like spark plugs, oil change, and tires. The only issue left unfixed was the IAC valve. Vehicle was totaled in April “20. Very reliable vehicle. Drove it to and from Memphis and Huntsville for college. Would definitely recommend it to a high school or college college student. The 3.0 definitely gets up and goes and the sport tuned suspension is great for handling corner. Really sat and realized how much i miss my old car.

Nearly a quarter of a century later...
Bought this car new 24 years ago and still my daily driver. 192K miles. Everything on the car still works-even the cassette player. Did have to replace clutch, alternator, starter, front struts (on 3rd set), radiator, valve cover gaskets and a cracked motor mount. Has only needed ONE brake job in its life (all 4 rotors and discs). About to replace the idle air control. Still averaging 24 mpg around town and 27 on highway on premium gas. NEVER burns oil. They stopped making vehicles like this one (last year manufactured in Japan) a LONG time ago. If you find one of these for sale that has been well maintained, it could last you several more years.
Nissan Has Fallin Off from Being Premium
Not the most reliable car. Has a lot of mechanical problems that arises very often as explained below. Nissan pretty much stole everyone's money with the make of these cars b/c I feel Toyota and Honda did a whole lot better than them with the reliability of there cars. These cars are worth lees than KIAs and DAEWOOs if you ask me. I have own this car for a year and has spent more in it than its worth. To all my fellow buyers avoid these cars b/c I promise you b4 200,000 miles it will be junk unlike Toyota and Honda. At least they recall a car that has a problem all Nissan did was pocket the consumers money and gave them the middle finger. So to you Nissan I hope you go out of business.
Very disappointed
I have owned 4 Maximas and this is by far the worse one I have owned. I have replaced 2 sensors, the exhaust, the air flow meter, the signal light flashes very fast when you turn it on to make a left hand turn, and the leather on the driver's seat is cracking. And I have only owned the car for 3 1/2 months!
My Nissan
I just adore my 2001 Nissan Maxima as well as my wife's Nissan Pathfinder. We love our cars a hole lot excpecaily mine.
Still Not Sure...
I bought my Maxima SE new back in March 01. I like the car overall, but here is my experience so far: 1)Had to replace the front shocks at 40K 2)The exhaust pipe had to be replaced at 53K 3) Replaced original Potenza tires after 53K 4)New front brakes at 36K 5) New rear brakes at 52K. My experience with the service department at the dealership has been very good, they know what they're doing. I will go with a Honda or Acura for my next car.
Performace 4 door
The 25th Anniversary has been an exemplary sample of torque, size, performance and reliability. It definitely is worth the extra couple of dollars in the used car market for the added details that you get vs' lets say the SE model or any oher V6 Accord or Passat. In fact a much better value and fun ratio.
suck
my car is not turning on and the battery is not fully charging and the air bag light is on all the time

Alternator
I have owned my car for 5 yrs. Have had 4 alternators put in. Was left stranded again. Shop says nothing wrong with alternator or battery. Must be a short some where.
