Just Keeps Going
I've had this car for almost 6.5 years and 153,000 miles. I'm confident it will go to 200,000 miles. Longevity is vital to me. I commute probably 65 miles a day, and I've got know that my car will go. With this many miles there are bound to be some costs. I've had some expensive repairs, such as replacing the mass air flow sensor and the auxiliary fans. Yet, I always have confidence in it. It doesn't hurt that it can still blow by most cars when needed. I'm planning on purchasing a new car in 2008. The Maxima is high on my list. OK an IS 350 looks pretty good too!
What a car!
Bought this car new in December, 1999, 5-spd manual. Changed oil every 3,000 miles, maintained according to dealer and Nissan requirements. Did slip on maintenance a few times; but car never had issues as described by other owners. Car driven as daily commuter and for long trips, driving was a dream; "drove it like I stole it"! My baby is now hitting close to 10 years old and now having some issues. Tiny oil leak, bottom of engine somewhere leave a couple of drops every time I park and transmission getting whiny. But still runs as strong as day driven off show room floor.
C'mon Nissan
Have had previous Nissans and have always had good experiences with Nissan, but am a bit disappointed in this Maxima. The service engine light has been on several times and car has barely 40K miles on it, also the springs in the drivers seat squeek and creak all the time while driving, and has been doing this since about 25K miles, it's extremely annoying. Dealers don't seem to help. Have a 2000 Quest and have had several mechanical problems as well. One of the main reasons I went with Nissan was for reliability, I've lost a lot of confidence.I do like the Nissan styling and engine performance, and want to love the Maxima, but can't.
Family Man Fun
Purchased new SE as a demo with 7k miles. There weren't many choices for a sporty 4 door with a manual tranny. The newly lengthened '00 was bigger than an A6 or 5xx BMW and cost much less. It has lots of legroom and the leather interior is still holding up even with two kids. After 8 years it is still fun to drive and comfy on road trips. With 100k miles I get 24/28 running 89 fuel. I drive more gently now. The exterior has held up pretty well even with occasional modifications in the parking lot. Because of the reliability, I won't consider a new Maxima to replace my '00 unless they include a FREE 100k bumper to bumper warranty.
Max Rocks
I test drove Passat's, Accord's, Camrey's, Legacy's and domestic sedans before choosing the Maxima. The combination of power, built quality, design, resale, and reliability was just not matched by any of the others. It's simply the best car I've ever owned and the best car I've ever ridden in that's affordable.
Where's the Passion?
This is a good car, but for the GXE they seem to have lost sight of the fact that this was once the 4DSC (4 door sports car). Mash the throttle and, yes, it takes off, but with no mean-sounding growl. The interior is roomy and comfortable, the trunk big and the ride smooth and quiet, but it doesn't seem like a sports sedan to me.
A nice looking lemon
I bought this car a year ago because I heard Nissan are good cars sense then I had to replace spark plugs and compact because of vibration, alternator, now radiator is not keeping any water in it, it stalls out when I'm at a traffic light. I now have a bad taste in mouth concerning this car and on tire time at a $150.00 a piece
great car,great walue
Had the car for about 4 months now, is all I thought it would be. I bought it used, so I knew that there will be some work needed done to it, but so far so good. Is strong, smooth and it delivers at any rpm.
Nice Ride
I love this car. After my 99' Civic was stolen, I bought the Maxima 2000 Se. The Civic was also found. So now I have the Civic and Maxima. Paid in full cash. Pretty cheap :):)
I LOVE my Maxima SE
This is the best car that I have ever owned. I will probably never drive anything other than a Maxima. I love the sporty look but it also has plenty of room. It handles great and the acceleration is awesome! It also gets good gas mileage for a car with this much power.
2000 Maxima GXE (5 speed)
We love this car and see ourselves in a few years going to a Nissan dealer and saying, "We want the same thing, but newer!" It's that good. Powerful, fun, roomy, looks good. Maximas only keep getting more powerful (hard to imagine, but even more fun!). They need to work on the notchy manual transmission! It's the only real sore spot about this car.
Great budget oriented sport sedan
This car offers high performance (compared to the competition), and a low price with proven reliability and comfort. My only complaints are about the interior materials and the front wheel drive layout. My other car is an Audi A4, so I know what lengths some manufacturers will go to to surround the driver with lux materials and mechanics in the cockpit, but the Maxima's interior is functional. To be more sport oriented, this must switch over to rear or all wheel drive though along with a shorter throw shifter. This engine is definitely a keeper.
5-spd, 5 passenger fun.
With a 5 speed tranny and 222 horses working up front, this car is a blast to drive. A bit of body roll but easily fixed with some add-ons. Comfortable cabin, great design and fabulous engine. Its also nice to pull up to a light and take on a kid in a 4 banger who thinks hes ready to be on the fast and the furious.
ALL THE CAR
Had a 1995 altima before this one, and I just loved it. As soon as I had a chance to buy the maxima I jumped on it and boy did I made a good deal. The car runs much better than I expected, pover and delivery is exceptional. Is an se. Model so the suspension is a little stiffer but you know that going into it.
Highly Recommended
I love my Maxima. Great car for the money. Easily competes with the top of the line cars and has better styling than Honda. I bought it new with 52 miles on it and have driven it everywhere and have never been disappointed. It has all the options except the CD changer. Pearl white with Black Leather...not available in the new models (not sure why?). Very few problems.
fun on the road
I've owned or driven couple of dozen cars over the last 20 years including Mercedes Se400, Brougham, Bentley etc.Maxima is not yhe most powerful or luxuriuos, but when it comes to quility, craftmanship, comfort or reliability it'll hold it's own against any. It's a great driver's car that's fun, fun, fun to drive
Punishing ride
Bought mine with 74k, now has 85500 exhaust was repaired 2 wks after purchase, rear frozen caliper 3 months after purchase. Hard ride is worst feature. GLE is better. Must use high test fuel. Quality of interior is lacking. Nissans are not known for comfortable ride, Maxima SE confirms.
135000 and going strong
after 135,000 my car runs good and looks good. I also have replaced coils and 02 sensor. Rust on rear wheel wells. The top of one of my keys broke too. I wonder if Nissan reads these comments since so many of these problems are common and have everything to do with quality.
great car
Great vehicle, solid handles great. Poor OEM tires. Try Nitto 450's.
great sounds
Really reliable and just a fun car to drive.
Great Car
This is a great car. I got this car and have not wished i got another car. Works great and is easy to maintain. This is worth the money.
2000 Max
Great car! It may not be for everyone, however. I enjoy a vehicle that handles and performs when pushed a little harder than usual. This Maxima does exactly that! It may not be for everyone because the elements that make it a "driver's car" (upgraded suspension components) make fo a firm ride. Personally, I'll sacrifice ride quality for performance any day. Not that this car is uncomfortable. I'm 6 feet tall and, unlike many Japanese- badged cars, the seats are supportive for short or long trips. On the other hand, if you prefer the ride/handling of a Grand Marquis, this may not be the car for you.
Original, Best 4 Door Sports Car
I love this car. It out performs any other car in the class. I've driven "suped" up Camrys, Acuras, and others and I like my car best.
Wish it were a better car for the money
Decent car but not the most reliable. Well cared for but after 115k needs oxygen sensors and a catalytic converter, ball joint, tie rod end, steering rack. Has already had manual trans rebuild w/ clutch(bad leaky seals, coils replaced, alternator, Bose stereo replacement, sub woofer replacement and I'm sure I left something else out. The trunk lid is totally rusted out also.
Best in 35 years of driving
Of all the vehicles I have driven in the past 35 years I like my Maxima GLE the best. Even though the exceptional comfort sold me the car I appreciate the more than adequate power, the feel of the car on the road, and the reliability. My Nissan dealer provides the best service I have ever experienced in 35 years of automobile ownership. I recommend this car without reservation.
2nd Maxima to date
Overall, this car is sweet. I love the bose system and subwoofer. For a factory system it rocks. The interior layout is simply designed. I couldn't see myself driving a camry or accord. I am happy with my purchase, yet not happy with the reliabily and fit n finish. 40K miles so far. I still have my 87 max, which I still love (87, best max ever)
POOR QUALITY
I really want to like this car. However, I have had nothing but problems with this car over the past year. Three engine coils (yep, that's half of them) have gone bad over the past six months. In addition, my computer was replaced within the first year, had to be updated again recently and now my oxygen sensor is having problems. I've been into the service department more times with this car than I have with any car previously.
silver ghost
Have had car since dec '99. Original TOYO tires lasted 41000 miles. No squeeks or unwanted sounds/noises. Road noise a little high but the wind deflector on sunroof helps a lot. Beautiful machine. Great road ride. Will keep this baby for another 50.000 miles.
A long term love
I owned this car for 5 years and put about 100,000 miles on it. I absolutely loved this car. It has a cute exterior, and the performance is spectacular. The inside is roomy enough to fit 4 large adults comfortably, and the trunk had plenty of space for all of my camping gear. The 02 sensor was replaced and the tires cost a small fortune, but other than those expenses and regular maintenance (brake replacement, oil changes, etc.), this car was dependable. I commute a long way to work and owned this car for a long time and I never got tired of driving it.
LOVE the Maxima
This car is even better than the advertised "4 door body, 2 door soul" that Nissan previously advertised it as. So much fun to drive, it almost sucks to arrive at your destination. Great juice off the line, and even stronger passing power on the highway (and believe me, I've tested that numerous times!). Bottom line: this car will not disappoint.
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT
This is my second Maxima (the first was a '97 GLE). No kidding, I LOVE MAXIMAS. They're the best! My first Maxima had lots and lots of miles on it and started to make me a little nervous, so I got a 4 cyl 2 door Honda Accord for the gas mileage. Sure, I got 33 mpg, but after three months, I had to have another Maxima. Maximas have other "sport sedans" beat hands down on the power and performance.
GREAT car
Love this car, and pretty much everything about it. Haven't had a single problem with it, and would buy another in a heartbeat. Only complaint is fuel economy, but I guess that's what you get with a car that's so quick.
cennic at heart
ihad this car for 2years i drive almost 40 thousand miles a yr. this car has gotten me thur rain, freezing ice storms, uncovered snowy road and save me from crazy drivers on the interstate.it seems that no matter how hard i am on this car it just keeps taking the abuse.i have never had such a reliable car with so few problems i have had alot of cars but this one takes the cake! all i have to say is if you want a car that has it all and need to fell secure in what your driving this is the car for you!
No surprise
Replaced a 96 Buick Skylark. Performance doesn't beat the Buick by as much as I hoped (222 vs. 155hp) but otherwise a far better car in every way. Huge rear seat, reliable, joy to drive. I disagree about Maximas being ugly. I think the '02-'03 in silver with spoiler is the hottest looking car on the road! Now the '04, that's hideous. what were they thinking? Oh well, I'd probably buy it anyway.
I own one an love it
I had several cars in mind when I was shopping for a car. Camry and Accord looked too plain for me. Passat in the long run would be more expensive to maintain. This car has one of the best engines in it's class. The only problem I noticed with it is the pathetic down shifting on auto transmission. The answer to it is very simple, TURN THE OVER DRIVE OFF! Once that is done, the car leaves pretty much any V6 in the dust.
It was great...what happened
This was a great car for the first two years that I owned it. But as the miles have racked up it really hasn't help up like other Nissan's I've had. There are all sorts of nasty sounds that this car makes when accelerating and the transmission just doesn't like to be driven at anything over half throttle or it'll bang around or not shift at all. Lots of pinging. The stereo has broken. The A/C is noisy. Just stuff I wouldn't expect from a Nissan. Yes...I've had it in and out of the dealer and mechanics. They've replaced things...only for them to break again. Definite disappointment. Should have bought a '99.
giddy-Up
been looking around for a car like this one...my first car was a honda accord ex v6...(which is very common)...i wanted a car that no one really had around the area...and im glad that i went with this choice...my other option was a bmw 328i which i dreamed for...but im happy with my choice right now...it does me good...gives me what i wanted in a vehicle...i bought this vehicle used...its in great condition with 50,000 miles already on it and still rising...
00 Maxima SE 5 Speed
Having driven a Jeep Grand Cherokee before, I was looking for a car that tracks well, has the same grunt the 5.2 ltr V8 in the Jeep had, and offers me a manual. Not wanting to spend more than $24k, the list became pretty short quickly. I was not disappointed by the engine. How sweet it is! Lots of grunt, lots of revability. I think teh car looks a little weird from the outside, but I don't have to look at it while I am driving. Build quality and reliability have been excellent, and I am getting about 24 mpg in mixed, somewhat aggressive driving. The tires are almost shot after only 22,000 miles
Fits like a Glove
The size is perfect for me at 5'2". There are no blind spots. I can take passsengers in the back seat without having to worry about their comfort. The best thing about this car, however, is its power. It's wonderful to pull on to the highway without worries - I used to drive a Cavalier. When my lease was up this month, I couldn't bring myself to turn it in - I bought it.
MAXIMA IS TAKING ME FOR A RIDE
ALTHOUGH THIS CAR HAS BEEN FUN TO DRIVE, IT IS STARTING TO BE A NIGHTMARE FOR REPAIRS, BUYERS BEWARE!!!! I BOUGHT THIS NEW AND AT 25,500 MILES THE COILS HAD TO BE REPLACED, WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.OK, NOW, AT 41000K THEY HAVE TO BE REPLACED AGAIN AT A WHOPPING $780.00. I AM CURRENTLY TALKING TO NISSAN, BUT SAID MAYBE THE NEXT TIME THEY GO THEY WILL FOOT THE BILL FOR THE COST OF THE COILS (80.00 EACH).NOT LABOR. I WILL GET RID THE CAR AS SOON AS I CAN!!!!! HEADS UP PEOPLE, THIS CAR HAD FLAWS AND I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE THIS IS HAPPENING TO!! IT'S NOT THAT FUN TO DRIVE.
2nd-Timer
This is my second GLE, and I've had nothing but great luck and top-end performance from both of them. I'm especially keen on the GLE's V-6 engine, which I tested against both the Camry V-6 and the Accord V-6 when I was first looking at the Nissan back in 1998. Honda and Toyota may have ugraded their engine performance in the intervening years, but I'd be surprised if either could match the GLE for either power or pickup. A great car, albeit a little pricey and not overly stylish.
Great Car, only minor issues so far
We've had our car for over 3 years now, and really enjoy it. Very reliable, except for some annoying squeeks in various places in the cabin (front pillars, roof liner).
Great Sports Sedan
Bought 2000SE off of EBAY w/60K miles for $11K and have driven it for about 3 months now. Excellent ride with suprising power from 40-90 MPH. Was thinking about Acura 3.2TL but went with the lower cost of Maxima. Also, the 3.2 have had extreme tranny issues. I put on some new Falkens and they are a very cost efficient complement to the performance and handling of the car. I hope this is geared for at least 150K miles, because I plan to enjoy the ride for a long time to come.
Very Nice Vehicle
This has been an exceptional vehicle for my wife. She is very hard on her vehicles and this car has taken a beating for 72,000 miles and is still going strong. The only issues we have had with the car is the rear window switch broke and the oil pan screw stripped when it was screwed in incorrectly. All around this is a exceptional vehicle but it was a little pricey.
$1450+a tranny!
I have had this car 4 yrs. During the 1st week of Feb. '05 I spent $1450 on replacing the ignition coils, mass airflow sensor & throttle response sensor. Nissan should of extended the warranty on the coils. Nissan is well aware that the coils are junk! In addition to the above the dealer replaced the A/T under warranty at 58,500 miles. I have never had a transmission fail at such low mileage! The rebuilt unit is only warranteed for 12/12. I am a preventive maintenance junkie. I installed an external A/T cooler in series with the factory unit. The transmission was serviced twice in 58,500 miles. This should never of happened. I WILL NEVER AGAIN BUY ANOTHER NISSAN!!
Maxima rocks.
The best car in its price range and lots of power. Wish I could trade it in for the newer more sexy Maxima's of 2001 and 2002 that have cool features that were missing in the 2000. Things like Navigation system, music contols on the steering wheel and more more small nics naks. And not to mention the new poser house under the hood.
NISSAN MAXIMA SE SEDAN
THIS IS A GREAT CAR AND FUN TO DRIVE.
burevs review
I find this vehicle rides very hard, not as comfortable as previously owned maxima's. Performance and reliablility are unmatched in my opinion. Radio antennae would improve reception.
Worst automobile I have ever owned
Based on the other reviews, we must have gotten a lemon. All within 50,000 miles: lost starter, engine shift assembly, front seat motor shorted out, transmission problems, catalytic converter failure and others. Have owned Hondas and Toyota and have NEVER had the idiotic problems I have with this car. Overall, a money pit, almost $3500 worth. PLus, Nissan does not stand behind product. When starter went out at 37,000 miles, Nissan claimed "that is just normal wear and tear." My 11 year old Honda still has original starter. Will never buy Nissan again.
MaxiMax
My second Maxima after my original 1981. This car gives me exactly what I need and expect, great performance, solid feel and superb reliability. I also own a popular German car and I would keep my Maxima if I had to make a choice. My wife would keep the Teuton, so everybody's happy. If I have it my way I'll be purchasing this car at the end of the lease; if not I'll be leaving a lot of money on the table.
