Excellent Car - Very Reliable

This is my third Galant and the first of generation/body style. Also it's the third galant I have driven over 200,000 miles without any major fixes whatsoever. I will be straight up honest with all of you. As a mechanic I have seen so many failures because of lack of simple maintainance!! 95% of people do not follow the maintainance recomendations of these vehicles and cause their own vehicles to fail. All of my cars have had their 30, 60, 90 services and have always performed properly. I also have a 3000GT-VR4 for a weekend fun car and it has 160,000 miles and all original everything inlcuding the clutch! Mitsubishi makes a quality vehicle, properly taken care of will certainly last.

I purchased 97 ES model from original owner with all records two years ago. Up to know, only change tires and oil change regularly. With almost 30-40% less money to get some 97 model of Camry or Accord. I would have only got 94 Honda CIVIC. Car is roomy & powerful comfortable, fancy woodgrain panel, nice stereo. It's very worthy used car if you can get from original owner who took good care of!

Bought it @ 21k mi its at 50k mi now all i've done to it is was general maintenece and the ball joint recall it is ridding fine. It aint a Honda or a Toyota but it is a suitatble substitute if you practice general maintenence.... I wouldn't trust the newer versions based on their extensive recalls on the 1999's and 2000's apperenlty MITSU has cleaned up all of the mistakes in the 2002 model. But I dunno...

This is the second Galant that I have owned. Mitsubishi used to compete well with Toyota and Nissan on value in the early & middle 90's. My last car was a step back from its former self. I still own a 1993 Galant with 180,000 miles. The 1998 model is starting to degrade more quickly. It has less than 100,000 miles. Also, in the 1998, the road noice increased, there are more squeaks and handling sloshes. The interior is modest but my dash warped out of proportion during the second year. The mirrow adjustors button is now inoperative and the transmission is showing signs of degrading. Overall, I have lost my faith in Mitsubish and will not purchase another.

My Galant has over 100k miles and it still runs great. I've had no problems with this car. It is solid and reliable. I have the 5 speed std. It is quick and handles nicely in corners.

So far this car has managed to cross several mountain ranges, a desert and near-arctic conditions, survived a five day road trip with cats, and gotten through some of the worst bumper-to-bumper traffic while commuting to work every day! Best car I have ever owned!

Didn't really want to buy a "foreign" car, but it's been the best decision I have made in a long time. Just regular maintenance, no irritating repairs. It is so dependable. Love the zip of the engine, love the heat in Minnesota and the cool in Arizona. Do they still make good cars like that? Yes, it does have a lot of plastic on the inside, but I did buy a "cheap" car not a Mercedes. I got my money's worth and more.

I bought it in Minnesota, loved it because it kept me warm, love it in AZ because it keeps me cool even in 100+ weather. I have spent minimum amount of monies on repairs/maintenance. Hope she last me another 30 years or more.

I bought this Galant in Dec. 2003 with only 34K miles on it. Since then (about 1.3 years), I've driven it 26K miles. Absolutely no problems. It is fun to drive, gets very good mileage (30-35MPG highway), and is a great value. Mine has the 5-speed tranny, which I highly recommend for fun-to- drive factor and to avoid problems others seem to have with the automatic.

This car has been ok, but when it was 5 years old the transmission had to be replaced. Also the interior integrity was very poor. The leather seats wore from sliding in the car, the stereo system whent out completely, plus the electric antenna stopped working and had to be replaced and it stopped working again. The outside seems to dent very easily. I have loads of dings and dents, just from parking in a parking lot. I feel a car should be more resistant to simple dings.

'97 Galant

This car is terrible. I had such a bad experience with this car, that I would NEVER consider buying a Mitsubishi again. We purchased it brand new when it first came out. Since then, we have changed our transmission three times. The first time was by an independent and it didn't turn out very well. So we decided the second time we would get it done at the dealer, which you would assume would be better. Unfortunately, that was not the case. As soon as our warranty ran out, our transmission died again. I tried to talk to the dealer, but it was no use. The third time we had it replaced by an independent mechanic again because there is no point in getting by the dealer if there's no reliability. This car has been very unreliable.

An excellent car. Very reliable, comfortable and dependable car. I have been burned twice in the past with my two other cars I bought based on the consumer reports ratings: a Honda Civic and a Toyota Corolla. Both of them have been proven so unreliable that they spent 2 out of 12 months a year in the shop. If you really want to buy the best Japanese car for your money buy a Mitsubishi not a Honda or a Toyota.

I own a '97 Galant DE and as compared to a '98 Accord I leased, it is an excellent and much less expensive replacement. It's lighter, and less refined than the Honda particularly in how it feels on the road and the interior design, but I have found it to be a bit quieter, and a better value when considering an Accord might cost 2X.

I got my Galant brand new in 1997. It now has @130K miles. I've had no major problems with it. Fun to drive because it has a great acceleration 'kick'. Just zips in and out of traffic or when passing on the highway. At first it used to jerk when first starting out on the road. I had to learn how to manage the gas pedal so it wouldn't do that. over the last year or so different things have had to be replaced, but I've had it for 15 yrs so I don't complain (plus a mechanic friend has done most of the work for me on the cheap). Time for me to get a SUV so sadly I'm having to sale it.

I have had this car for 5 years and have been very happy with it. I have been looking at new cars for about 12 months... and it is just so hard to convince myself to have a car payment when my Galant just keeps going and going. I haven't had any major troubles with it. The transmission has always felt funny - like it was going to go - but never has. It is a good car and it has surprisingly quick acceleration on the highways (for a 97, 2.4L sedan).

I got my 1997 Mitsubishi Galant cheap off of Ebay with 173,000 miles on it. I replaced several OEM parts and upgraded the wheels/tires. This car gets good gas mileage and allows me to keep wear/tear off the two family cars. Its 2.4L engine is torquey. I will upgrade the brakes / suspension next, then add a new air intake.

Bought it used at 38,000 Excellent Performance, Good Handling, very Torquey engine. Good Brakes, Sharp Steering, but very over geared. At 75 on fifth, I find myself trying to upshift to a higher gear. Had to replace gearbox at 70000. and electic roof at 50,000. Admittedly I have put 82,000 in a little over 3 years. The same kind of milage I used to put in my 91 Camry which I had to kill after 230000 miles due ro rust. Would I buy another mitusbishi? Probabaly not. Would rather pay the premium for a Camry.

This was my wife's first car, purchased in 2000 as a used car. It held up through Pittsburgh winters, though often with some sliding, and a parkway accident. It's now at 185,000 miles and was an excellent commuter car up until the last round of breaks and transmission repair needs. Very, very stylish and quality acceleration.

This is my first Mitsubishi. It looked like a good value buy when my Ford Prope expired without notice. Ten monts later I am still pleased with it. The only problem I have had with it was the crankshaft pully broke. It was easy to replace. The car is still tight at 66,000 miles, and the finish looks new. The fold down rear seats expand the trunk for large objects. I would like the gas milage to be higher, (26-28mpg) but I am an agressive drive.

I bought my 98 Galant used and have had it for a little more than one year. The brakes need to be replaced for the 2nd time in one year and the automatic door locks are malfunctioning. The retractable antenna stopped retracting and had to be repaired. The transmittion is slipping now and it only has ~60,000 miles on it. I am very disappointed and will not buy another one.

I purchased my 1998 Mitsubishi Galant ES brand new. I put 89,000 miles on it to date and have not had any problems with the car, just normal wear (new battery, brakes, etc) I have a 5 spd and average 30-35 miles to the gallon (which is great) I have only one complaint about the car, it is hard to sell. My car looks like new, but Mitsubishi's don't have a great resale name like Honda and Toyota. It's a shame, because it is really a good car.

I soon realized after I bought my car that the previous owner had not done any maintainance. After I did the appropriate servicing (timely synthetic oil changes and some Slick 50, a belt replacement and tightening a transmission service or two it ran great. I only wish I had the 15' wheel option for better handling. I installed a Ractive STB which helped the understeer as well as a K&N Hi Flow Air Filter to improve breathing. Other than that, she gives as good as she gets. Which is very, very good. I plan to keep her for a loong time.

I bought this car used at 49k miles. At 63k miles, the transmition went up with no known warning. It cost me $1950, to rebuild it at Aamco. Trans. problem is very common with this model, it runs fine at the moment, but I'm stuck with cause I can't sell it. It's worth nothing in the used car market. No more Mit. Galant, I'm ready to move to a better make.

The only problem that we have had is that you need to have the balance shaft looked at over 100,000 miles mark. Our the shaft broke at 160,000 and caused some damage. Other than that, the car has been really sporty and handles like a dream.

I purchased my Galant about two year´s ago with 39K miles from a reputable dealership. Transmission problems became evident immediately. It would slip between first and second routinely and this would sometimes make for very hard shifting and an unpleasant ride. The dealership agreed that this was a problem and replaced the transmission. Although the problem subsided initially it never really went away entirely! The car now has 65,000 miles and occasionally I´ll experience a hard shift in the low gears. Aside from this particular problem the car has been excellent!! Great gas mileage, fun to drive, all systems work perfectly, very dependable!!

I bought this car at 41k mi, & added the ext warranty. My first bit of trouble was a few weeks later, took it to get serviced, paid the deductible and 7 hours later they returned it untouched saying the sunroof (which was inoperable) was aftermarket so it wasn't covered and the calipers weren't actually malfunctioning (even though they wore through brakes at an angle.) Next, at 60,200 mi, my shift-select cable frays, and stops working. I take it in, the dealer says they won't touch it after 60k. Now, the tranny is completely out at 93k mi and I'm ready to move on to a better make, This car is a great little car when it's new, after about 50k miles, get rid of it! Subaru Forester here I come!

I had just totaled a 1996 Geo Prism, a very dependable car. I went looking for a not so expensive mid-size car. This Galant had 36,000 miles on it in 2003, so I was thinking about a new car. After three days I noticed problems with the transmission. I kept hoping it would go away, but at 63,000 miles the transmission starting acting up. I paid $2,300 at the Amcoo transmission to fix it (they were a big ripoff but that's another story) after about six months I was having problems again. I had to trade this car in which wasn't worth 10 cents. If I could I would tell the world to never buy Mitsubishi again. I think that anyone that ever owned a 1998 Galant should file a lawsuit for pain and suffering.
