Used 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse Hatchback Consumer Reviews
Fun, but expensive
This car has always been a lot of fun to drive, but when it started having major problems it became more of a burden than anything. My odometer just passed 90,000 and now the turbo is out. It just locked up one day. I've replaced the clutch, the radiator, the slave cylinder, and the valve cover gasket. These repairs cost me between $300 and $900. Now with the turbo out, I've decided to get rid of it.
To those who wish to buy DSM
First things first, if your going to buy this car make sure you know how to take care of a turbo sports car. By that I mean take time to change the oil atleast every 3000 miles on the dot or less(it's important for the survival of the turbo/motor) and do regular mainenence or else you know, these things will break down. The weak link in this vehicle is the transmission. Just make sure you check before you buy: 1) if the tranny grinds/sounds from drive train 2)turbo shaft play(ask ur mechanic) 3)oil leaks. Again, don't buy this car unless you know how to maintain and/or fix a sports car.
Ripped Off
This car has been problematic since I bought it. My eclipse looks gorgeous on the outside, yet its looks are indeed deceiving. The automatic transmission has failed numerous times. (ie: 6 rebuilds and 8 other transmission failures since its initial purchase)A head transmission specialist of a local mitsubishi dealership stated that the transmission design of the early nineties eclipses, talons, and lasers were designed in a manner that is insufficient at handling the torque produced by the motor. A trans specialist of AAMCO transmissions stated, "these transmissions are a time bom wiating to explode." This is a sleek, yet volatile car.
Great car even with mileage
I bought the car with 80,000 miles from a friend who took really good care of the car. Paint looks like knew. Scheduled maintenance done everytime. The car is exceptional!!! Tons of fun..and fully loaded
DSM
i got this car back in 02 and it was completely stock. since then ive gotten a JDM engine, FP red turbo, 660cc injectors, 3" buschur exhaust, apexi boost controller and SAFC, BJs intake manifold, indy race core FMIC, 3" intercooler piping, ported evo III o2 housing and exhaust manifold, HKS 272/272 cams and HKS cam gears, JE pistons and rods, motec engine management, and a lot more. it runs 9.5 in the 1/4. this car eats supercharged vipers for breakfast. the build quality is excellent and it is fairly reliable. i highly recommend one to anyone who has the opportunity to get one.
