I've had my Mercury Mystique for about 2 months now and I really really enjoy it. It's sporty but not too sporty. The power it has amazing (V6) and it is one great car. The only thing I don't like is the transmission slips. I got power but sometimes I can't use it all but to the rough idles and slips. I have a great system in the car and it really bangs. My friends love the car and I love it just as much.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Car looks great. I should have researched this vehicle before I purchesed it. Car had 105000 miles on it, when I purchesed it. The car runs great, but the check engine light comes on all the time. So, far I had to change the thermostat and flush the cooling system as well as change the hoses. Its Catalyst Converter already needs to be changed. The rear defogger grid lines burn out to quickly. It averages about 21 mpg. It has some minor electrical issues. I sugest if you are interrested in purchesing this model, only do it if it has low miles. Oh, one more thing the regulator on the dirver side window has had to be replaced as well. So, in conclusion I guess thats not bad for a Ford product.

Having owned this V6, 5-speed, leather seated, sunroof equipped car for over 8 years, I've developed a few opinions on it. The engine was designed by a joint effort of Porsche and Cosworth, and is impressive to behold. Normal mileage is 22 city / 28 highway, although if driven very carefully will increase to 24/32. My previous car was an Acura Integra, and this Mystique would run rings around it. European feel, 4 cams, 4 disc brakes, and supportive seats make for a fun driving experience. Roughly 3000 rpm at 65 mph seems a bit high, although the engine is very smooth and quiet. This is a European designed car, built in Kansas City.

This car has been decent overall, but because of the style of the car- to get it fixed costs way more than it's worth. Since buying this car, I've replaced the transmission, 2 batteries, alternator, breaks, 2 sets of wheels, cat. Converter, and I'm in the process of having the starter reinstalled, and I was just called by the shop to tell me they're having trouble putting it in. Every time I need anything done with this car, I get that phone call. I paid 6k on this, and I've put at least 3k into getting it fixed.

We bought this car new and it has 112,000 miles on it. We had to replace the timing belt at about 100,000 miles; I would recommend replacing it at 95,000 as a precaution because it will leave you stranded, as would ANY car with a timing belt, not just this one. Over all it is great, fun to drive and gets EXCELLENT gas mileage, 28 to 33 mpg in city or highway. The paint has peeled in a couple of places and on the grille but that is cosmetic only. We live in a snowy area and unless we get 2 feet (unusual) it handles well. My husband drives it to work nearly every day, 7 miles each way, mostly rural. I hope it lasts as long as our old '91 Tracer which had 315,000 miles when we sold it!

I purchased this vehicle last year to commute (50 mi, ea way) this winter. The person I purchased this from was the original owner and indicated the car got 35 MPG and was maintenance free other than a brake job. It is a 4 cyl, with 5 speed manual gearbox. My 1st MPG ck indicated 35.5 which was 80% hwy, 20% city driving. The car runs and drives great. Extremely strong and smooth for a 4 cyl. The torque feels more like a big six which makes for easy driving. Handles like a sports car although it has more torque steer than other front wheel drives I've driven. The top of the dash was loose but some household glue has worked holding it in place. I highly recommend this as a used car buy.

My wife and I purchased this vehicle in 2004. The car has good interior and the exterior is nice too, it also handles very well and has plenty of power for a 4cyl, when its running that is. The car now has 80,000 miles and we have replaced three window motors and its broken again, the fan speed for the heat and air only works on hi or off, at 60,000 miles we had to have the a/c recharged, replaced a vacuum hose that has a small leak again, now the timing belt is broken. I am at the point now that I really don't want to spend any more money to fix it. I think its time to trade for a Chevrolet product.

I purchased this V6/5-speed LS w/70k and have added 34k over the last 2 1/2 years. Performance and fuel economy have always been excellent for this class. Vehicle has been very reliable; only been in the shop twice in that time for anything more than maintenance (A/C leak and Shifter Cable, $400 total). Fun & inexpensive to own and drive. I highly recommend (but try to get a '99 or 2000 Model, prior years were less reliable, I've learned)

I had the topaz. tough good car. Bought the mystic with 12 miles on it, a demo. Loved the leg room, to me drove like an expensive car. It's 2011 and it's still in my driveway. Once it broke down, it was the battery. Buying a car alone as a women is scary, But I stuck with what I knew (Dad picked the topaz) and I did really good. I still love this car, still comfortable and drives very well. I'm over 90k miles now and concerned about the timing belt & cost I'm facing as any car owner would when reaching that milage. With my luck, I was blessed to get a great car with all the comforts of an expensive car. Everything except electric seats! very large trunk, love it not a stick

'99 LS...wish it had a 5-spd. Handles well after you lose the factory tires. Good road feel & a nice fwy cruiser. The A/T hesitates when going to a lower gear when you romp on the gas…like turbo-lag. Trunk has an odd opening & a weird angle making using the space difficult. Rear seat is for small adults & kids only. The leather seats are comfortable & hold you well even in the twisties. The rakish exterior is similar to the Lincoln LS. I should have gotten ABS & the sunroof. Even with the hard driving I get a respectable 20.5 MPG…remember this is a A/T V6 driven hard. I recommend this car to someone who has the need for 4 doors & likes to have fun.

'99 LS...has the a 5-spd. Beefy tires add a whole new world. Handles smoothly. There's no hesistation when shifting or getting gutzy with the powershifts! I agree the trunk has an odd opening, you just gotta know how to manuever items well to utlize the space! Rear seat is for small adults & kids only. The leather seats are definately sweet! Definately comfortable and cradle you as you play. My car is equipped with ABS and I have a sunroof that allows the hot air to escape and the sunshine to beam! Gas mileage averages to be 22MPG. I recommend this car to someone who has the need for 4 doors & definately likes to have fun.

I should have read Consumer reports before purchasing this car, they summed it up "Avoid this Car". So far the Dome light has dropped on my head, the A/C duct was thrown at me, and the Insulation wont stay put under the dash. Neither will the transmission fluid, it has sprung multiple leaks and the dealership says this is normal. There are over a dozen recalls on this thing in the last two years. My Mitsubishi only had two in seven years. Also, The owner manual doesn't match what is in the car completly.

This car has a really smooth ride and I like the one touch moonroof. The engine is peppy and was fast for its day but now many 4 cylinders have more h.p and torque. Lumbar is very supportive.

I have had no problems at all (fingers crossed) with this vehicle with the 24 valve V-tec 6. A bubble formed the size of a quarter on the dash, but I it did not justify ripping out the whole dash (recall item)unless they could eliminate the Ford rattle (beyond mechanics ability and hearing problems). Will replace original Goodyear tires next week only because of the severity of winter driving.

Dashboard from hell

My first week found the keyless trunk release inoperative. After that it was downhill. Window rattled, dashboard rattled. It took two visits to repair the window and 2 years to replace the dash( after 3 visits). Now one and a hal years later the dash has warped again and Ford won't stand behind the repair because the warranty is out. Too bad they don't recognize a design flaw when they see one. How many of you have air deflectors coming out of your Dashes?

I've had more major repairs than I can count...and I've heard from multiple mechanics "That's only happened because of this model". Some repairs that were Mystique specific: timing- belt went at 108,000...supposed to last to 120,000, transmission rebuilt at 5 yrs due to the way the drive shaft kit (?) was made, complete brake system overhaul at 6 years, oxygen sensor issues ($600) at 8 years..the list goes on. The dash warping is ridiculous. can barely see over it now and the defroster only works if it's on full blast for 20 minutes. Overall, it gets me from here to there, & I can fit a lot, but it's not the high safety-rated car I thought, since i'm on the side of the road 2x a year.

99 Mercury Mystique, I think I know more about the vehicle than an actual mechanic. Besides the paint peeling off and rusting on my roof, the check engine lights seems to be following me with more expenses. Catylic convertor, oxygen sensors, spark plug wires, starter, the alternator what else could go wrong.

I have a 1997 Mystique LS also. The 1999 version seems to track a bit better than the 1997. Very secure handling at all speeds and the 2.5 liter Duratec is very strong and smooth. I travel a lot at freeway speeds and average 27-29 mpg which in my view is pretty spectacular for an automatic V6 powered sedan. One caveat.. my car is not very quiet. Lot's of wind and road noise. I noticed that in 1999 Consumer Reports rated the car as well as the Accord and better than the Maxima. The negative reported was under 'integrity' (seals, fit and finish). In this area the 1997 made in Mexico is better. Still if you enjoy driving this is a pretty slick ride.

This car is the size of a Volvo S40 or Passat but doesn't get the credit. I've had this car and have only done regular maint. Very fun to drive with V6 and manual tranny and great handling. Only complaint is we can't buy the new Mondeo in the US.

I've now had this car for five years and nearly 80k miles. At the time it was the only American made sedan I could find with a manual transmission, ABS and a V-6. I pretty much got every option; the power seat, sunroof, traction control and split folding leather seats have definitely come in handy. I always enjoy driving it, although it does have some limitations: particularly the drink holders and road noise at highway speeds. Very little has gone wrong that wasn't fixed under warranty (knock on wood) so I've been quite pleased with that. Generally, it's a much sportier and more comfortable car than you'd expect for the price and I am very happy with it.

I have a 1999 Mercury Mystique Ls. This cars ride is very cushy, from the very soft but supportive leather seats and great shocks. All of the dash buttons are easily acccessible, and very easy to understand. The styling of the interior and exterior is very nice, not cheap looking like quite so many others. This car looks like it'd be more money than it actually is.

I purchased this car in 2000 with 18K miles on it. At 50K I had to replace the Fuel Pump, Gas Tank as well as a couple misc. parts. At 80K I had to replace the Fuel Pump again... at a cost of almost $500.00 each. At 100K I had to replace the Serpantine belt because it was shredded. This car looks good, has zero power, but decent gas mileage. Frankly, I can't wait to get rid of it.

At first it was a good deal. Low mileage, good price, the previous owner had kept up on all the scheduled maintenance. Six months later my timing belt blew out on the highway (yes, blew out) with about 55,000 miles on the car. Then power steering fluid began leaking and actually rotted out the sway bar bushings. So far I've spent nearly one third of what I originally paid for the car to have it repaired. Be careful!

I have a 99 mystique and it is probably the best car i have ever had. 130k miles. I bought it with 80k for 2,250 in 2009 its 2013 now and its still running strong. the only problems I have had was my alternator went out and its very hard to get to. my battery died about a month ago, my starter and o2 sensor is starting to go bad but things like that are expected. The only things i have a problem with is my front windows and sunroof don't work my brake light is out and blinkers are out. I've had car for about 4 yrs so $500 a yrs plus about $1k of repairs im very happy and will probably get another 1.

This car was absolutely perfect when my dad gave it to me in 2000 for my 16th birthday. Everything ran great, and it handled well, since i love to fly (my next car is a BMW) and it looked nice too. Since i hit 100k, the check engine light has come on twice, the transmission is going, and the car randomly cuts off. I did every scheduled maintence item on this vehicle and now it is falling apart! it is such a shame, because the car is so comfortable and extremely roomy. i guess that is what i get for having ford manufactured parts, because yes, even though it is a mercury, that is a FORD engine!!
