Best Benz Ever!
I love this car so much, I'm on my second one! Both have been white on black leather. First one I drove from +- 150000km right till 249000km. Was hard-pressed for a replacement car when I came across my current one - still in good knick despite being over 10 years old! (mileage 132000km) I have had this one now for a few months and it feels like dejavu! I cannot imagine driving anything else! Even the new ones don't match up to this! one snag - I might have to replace the keys/ignition! That wont be cheap! Besides that, have been a MB fan for years - also own a W123 230 E which I also love to bits! My only worry is the chafing of the steering wheel and gear-lever knob! any ideas?

C280 - More Mercedes than Chrysler
Sadly, this will be my last MB for a while. When compared to the new C class, the '99 has been rock solid and reliable. Can't say that for the post 2000 C class. Handles great, good fuel economy, a smart looking, buttoned-up German sport sedan.
A Gem of a Car
Bought the certified car with 30K in 2002. I've driven the car 80 miles every day and after 83,000 miles, I have yet to have a single repair bill, except for regular FSS A/B maintenance (every 10K miles). It's W202 body is a classic and the perky 2.8 engine justs adds. The C280 is one of the best cars made in Germany from 1998-2000. Afterwards, the C240, with a lesser 2.6 engine, was launched.
24 Years and Original owner of 1999 C280 Sport
Finally, the odometer hit 150,000 miles on my 1999 C280. "Gracie" has moved into year 24 with me. I purchased her in September 1999 as a present to myself. My true deep desire since age 17 was a Candy Apple Red or Black SL and to live life with the sun on my face and the wind in my hair. Instead, at 41 years of age I found a Mercedes sedan that I could love anyway (and pay cash for) and could keep until I die. I turn 65 in March 2023 - I still love the car but lust for an old SL! The most positive aspect of ownership is that I feel incredibly safe in this MB - it is SOLID! Steering is wonderfully responsive - not loose. After 300 miles or so my back hurts. Wish seats were heated. I have always been proud to be seen in of my car (black / black.) HOWEVER, and this is my fault - cancer has developed on the door panels and a few other spots. A search has begun for new door skins. She has had a garaged spot since I completed my home construction. The 12 years in outside elements around Northern Kentucky has really hurt. When I purchased my '99, I made a decision to be proactive with service and never grumble about the high cost of repairs (which I cannot do for myself.) MB Dealer Service handled all work except the full paint job and tires. (They recommended a paint shop that was a true disappointment. I failed to get multiple bids. Lesson is: Trust, but Verify.) I spend an average of $5000 / year for all repairs, but the car is paid for, insurance is reasonable and my annual tax & tags are very low. Gracie has the usual pricey issues - electrical, headliner, suspension (this week,) gaskets, etc. Motor and transmission are in great shape. All mechanical issues are addressed immediately and none recur without resolution that is unless they cost more than it is worth to fix them (parking brake sticks occasionally.) The original Bose speakers have a rattle that never seems to be completely resolved and can be annoying. The cupholder was a cheap design and it broke early on. I couldn't see $90 for a replacement. Over the years, mileage has dropped a mile per gallon or so and OEM parts are getting harder to find. Do I occasionally consider buying another? Yes. I don't, though, because I love C280 style, color, quality and solid feel. I also know that, overall, I have taken excellent care of this one. My service team eye her with admiration so that should count for something. Driver's view of side and rear traffic is excellent. IMHO newer cars typically fail in this area. I don't care for the body styles available on most new cars. They all look the same and have very little character, so I'll just make the best of it. Although I still want the wind in my hair and to drive an MB ragtop, you never know, at 65 I may just achieve my goal and be buried owning an MB C280! ;-)
