Why not
Wanted something stylish and fun. It is all that and then some. My husband and I run to see who will get to the Miata first. Style and the retractable top makes it own statement. Not used to so much fast response, takes a second then you think, why not, no one is around. Blast to drive, great jaw dropper on many faces when that top retracts. Looks good, drives great, just a great car.

1500 miles in 3 weeks, city and highway and I love it. An absolute joy to drive. My wife wanted an automatic and I was dead set against it. Everyone knows an auto saps the power and destroys the driving experience...not in this car. There is plenty of power and I've come to really enjoy the paddle shift even though it took some getting used to.

Unbelievable
This is the kind of car that makes one glad to be alive! True to roadster heritage. I recommend getting a pair of good driving gloves to go along with this car.
Great to Drive, Poor Quality Interior
I love this car! Plenty of power, great handling. Love the looks both inside and out. No problems, all maintenance has been very affordable, great dealer has been doing the maintenance for me. One flaw - very very very low quality plastics in the interior. The plastics scratch very very easily. In taking my laptop out of the passenger seat, it scratched the dash, also I've been putting my cell phone on the console near the power outlet and it too is scratched, just from being there. I'm hoping the company has a recall and they fix this - until then, it's the biggest bummer on such a FUN FUN FUN car!

I absolutely love to drive my Miata! It is so quick on the highway and just flat-out a BLAST! The convertible top is easy to manage from INSIDE the car...love that! My family whines that it's too small and "get a real car" but ya know...they are just jea-LOUS! My 6'3" 250 lb boyfriend complains that he doesn't fit in it, but he's always grabbing the keys to get a chance to drive it. lol
Not an S2000, which is mostly good.
Last NC before the 'goofy grin.' Very noisy; if next to a Jersey barrier, forget conversation. Worse with the top up. Nearly all the noise comes from the tires. First gear on the 6-speed is way too low which makes overall acceleration poor (more shifts mean less time on the gas). 6th gear is also too low, which makes freeway cruising frenetic. The 5 speed ratios with an overdrive would have been much better. Shifting is very notchy even after 26000 miles. Supposedly Ford makes some magic gear oil which smooths this out. The engine is good, very flexible, but it does not like 87 octane fuel which makes it clatter like a can of bolts. Steering, handling, braking are excellent. Wheel arches are too big - see BMW for how this should be done. Mine had 2 replacement fuel caps and a purge valve in warranty - poor sealing causes the check engine light to come on. It still comes on; I turn it off by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes when I have time. I eventually found that smearing a little lithium grease on the filler neck seals the neck/cap connection and stops the check engine light from coming on. My VIN is within the range for 'bad filler necks' which are a known issue. If I spend $150 to have a dealer 'diagnose' the problem I have already found, Mazda will 'consider' an out-of-warranty fix, but refuse to state that they will actually pay to repair their piece-of crap fuel system. Mazda and their current 'service' sucks. I put well over 100,000 miles on a 1980 626 and had only a dome light bulb fail, yet now they can't even make a gas cap that seals. The clutch needs a bigger master cylinder as the pedal has to be pushed all the way to the floor for a decent shift - on most vehicles a little dip is enough. I complained about this while in warranty, and was told "It is normal." After the warranty had expired I found a service bulletin saying that some clutch cylinders had been assembled using ethanol, which causes poor disengagement. Mazda has refused to fix it. Overall, the car handles and performs much better than the Formula Ford I used to race. Pity they've gone 'ninja' with their latest models, which like most of their competitor's offerings are ugly enough to gag a maggot. 2018 Update: all the above still applies: at the same speed, say 60 or 70, the Miata feels like it is going much faster than my 2007 4Runner Sport due to the Mazda's noise and (relatively) harsh ride. In comparison, the truck-based Toyota feels like a limo. As a short-range, fair weather toy the Miata is fine, but as a daily driver? For example, if the door is opened when the top is wet, water pours from the top into the car (because there are no rain gutters. And with today's typical inattentive drivers and the Miata's small size, I find bigger vehicles being constantly driven into my lane or pulling out from side roads directly into my path. Poor weather/visibility makes these hazards worse. April 2019. I needed to make a trip to Moriarty NM to retrieve an airplane which had been stranded by weather, about 1450 miles with the top down and earplugs, completed in 21 hours, stopping only for gas. This was actually far more comfortable than the same trip in the 4Runner would have been, because, being tall, I have to splay my legs around the steering wheel in the Toyota, which causes pain in my left hip. I had no pain at all in the Miata. I flew commercial to Moriarty about 5 weeks later to retrieve the car, which had been left outside, taking a similar 21 hours for the return trip (timed to get through the cities along I 15 in Utah during the early morning hours while the residents were asleep). October 2019. Replaced the original 205/45 R17 Michelin Pilot Preceda tires with 215/45 R17 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 Plus 'all weather' tires. Wow! What a difference. The tire noise level is now down to normal levels, allowing conversations without shouting. The tires don't stick quite as well in the dry, but the difference is marginal. The ride quality is also not as harsh. They are marginally larger in diameter, so help to visually fill in the oversize wheel arches. There's still a 4x4 type gap at the top, which takes a lower spring set to fill, but that also reduces clearance over the huge 'traffic calming' vehicle launch ramps the local traffic nannies strew all over the streets. 2022, 36,000 miles. Replaced the soft factory sway bars with a set of RoadsterSport NC bars from Goodwin Racing which have mostly eliminated the body lean on cornering and have made the handling much more tidy without affecting the ride quality on rougher surfaces. With the factory sways the rear would 'step out' a little when accelerating through longer curves when the LSD 'hooked up.' That trait seems to have been eliminated - or I haven't pushed it hard enough yet to discover its new limit. I also changed the LSD oil (which was surprisingly clean), putting in Mobil 1 synthetic, and I changed the transmission oil (which came out blacker than I expected). I put in the 'magic motorcraft' oil XT-M5-QS, using 2 quarts plus a couple of ounces left over from the Mobil 1 differential oil. Wow, what an improvement in shifting! It's like an entirely different transmission. Based on the improvements brought on by the new tires, sways and transmission oil I'm upping my rating to 4 stars. I still don't like the space between the tires and wheel arches, but it will require different springs to reduce that. I don't want to go much stiffer on the springs as public roads are not manicured race tracks, but a spring swop is definitely under consideration. 2024. People are now beginning to appreciate the NC as "the best" miata. Previous mods include a Stebel air horn in place of the 'mouse squeak' original. Have also installed a Moroso header tank in place of the original plastic tank, which is a known weakness. I bought an OBD reader to eliminate the guessing on the 'annoying check engine light issue' and got a P2402: leak detection pump control circuit – voltage higher than expected. This is another fairly common issue. The pump is ahead and above the RR suspension and checks the sealing of the gas tank etc., a "nanny" issue that has nothing to do with how the vehicle actually runs, so is 'on ignore.' With the code reader I can erase the 'fault' without having to mess with the battery. I also bought a Schumacher battery tender which keeps the battery happy during the car's long winter hibernation here in the dreary Pacific Northwest. The car is now 17 years old and looks the same as the day I drove it home from the dealer. It has been babied, but the construction and materials quality is excellent, let down only by the emission system annoyances. In comparison, my 2007 4Runner lives outside, has 3 times the mileage, and still has its original Panasonic battery (which is amazing). Jan 2025. Car has had little use since Covid, still less than 37,000 miles. I have decided against a spring change and will ignore the too-large wheel arches. Am upping my rating to 5 stars because my nitpicks are mostly minor and are mostly easily fixable. While it doesn't have the power of the S2000, it has useable torque at low rpm, which the S2000 lacks, which means that on city streets one can trickle along in third gear at 1500 rpm to go over speed bumps and can still blend onto a freeway without changing gear - it's almost like driving an automatic if you're feeling lazy.

2007 MX-5 Miata Grand Touring Hardtop
Outstanding all around vehicle. A sheer preasure to drive. Great handling, plenty of power, good build quality, good looks inside and out. Beats the competition, hands down! I drove the others and came back and bought the MX-5 Miata! 30 mpg! The top is a work of art! Greatly enhances look of the car. Wheels may be too large in diameter - may distract from overall appearance due to size. At first sight, eyes are drawn to wheels instead of car! At second glance everything seems to mesh and look good - have mixed emotions - not sure if a 16 inch wheel might have been better aesthetically.
Fun Daily Driver
I used to have a Miata as a weekend car, but wanted a daily driver. The PRHT made the difference where I don't feel I have to compromise between a fun weekend car and an all-weather, year round daily driver. This car is the most fun to drive that I've ever owned and Mazda has provided a lot of comforts for a small sports car. The MX-5 even makes driving to work a blast!
A great car bought new and still daily driver
I love my stormy blue mica mx5. I bought it in 2007 with a power hardtop. Mostly trouble free over 17 years. Needed a new starter, air conditioner and needed to replace power hardtop motors but this has been my very last 2 years. Drives amazing. Loads of fun.

One of the only true sports cars
Don't buy this car unless you really want a true sports car. If that's what you want this car is sure to make you happy. I just can't understand why GM is the only other car maker that has something to compete with the Miata. And their two products are distant seconds. Get this car if you really want to have fun driving and you don't just want to burn rubber in an over-priced, over-powered machine.
