Love the style but maintenance is the killer

JSPEED6, 12/12/2008
2006 Mazda 6 i Sport 4dr Hatchback (2.3L 4cyl 5M)

I bought mine back in May 06. I loved the styling and functionality of the hatchback without looking like one. My only complaint from the start was the lack of engine pickup. It's nice to have a smooth riding car but it has no oomf. I'm only at 25k miles and brought it in for inspection to find that I needed new rear brakes and rotors...already? The new rotors rust up often like the old ones so I don't anticipate any longer wear. Also my check engine light was on due to a faulty O2 sensor that they were going to replace but got a new "procedure" to reset and see if it happens again....it did and I had to drop off for a couple days all over again. Be prepared to spend the maintenance dollars.

I've been a car man for decades. I love european and asian cars. However, There are some american cars that get my attention. I don't know how much Ford was involved with this car, but I'll say this. Look out Honda, Toyota, and Nissan. This car is quiet, smooth, feels solid, and well made. Did I mention a blast to drive? I've always loved hondas and respected Toyotas. But these products by mazda is getting my attention. I have had some minor warrenty work after 20,000 miles. A damaged or defective exhaust shield. A bad sensor and a bad battery. Really little stuff. Things that can go wrong on the most high end vehicles. Not concerned. Plus, I'm very abusive to cars, I drive hard!

A Great Sedan That You Should Consider

DVX135, 12/07/2007

If you want a car that is fun to drive, comfortable, sporty and utilitarian all in one, get a Mazda 6 5-door. The back seat folds completely flat, so I can haul bikes, guitar/amp, home improvement supplies, and 5 4-5 people comfortably. I have the 2.3l 4cyl engine with the 5 speed manual trans, and I don't know why anyone would want/need the V6. This car can move and has been a pleasure to own. The bottom line is that I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. Do yourself a favor, and at least test drive one.

We bought this car new, but at a discount probably because it's a stick and had been sitting on the dealer's lot for 6 months. In over 40 years of driving I would rate it as one of my favorite cars, combining fun to drive, decent economy (City avg 22+ mpg, Hwy 26-27 mpg), looks and reliability. The V6 has a distinct midrange, but will pull smoothly from 1500 in top gear. Ergonomically it's superb with controls laid out well and the pedals arranged for easy heel & toeing.

Let's start with the good parts. The car handles great and looks great. It is very comfortable. Now the bad. The car has been in the shop 12 times in 14 months. Everything from lumbar supports breaking (twice) to a fuel pump failure and several things in between. This is the 4th new Mazda I have owned in the past 6 years. I have been waiting a month for Mazda to make any decision on what they are going to do to satisfy their "good" customer on a car that has been a true "piece". The true quality of a company is shown not when everything is well but how they handle it when it is not well.

Everyone looks at it, says it's nice and people love the color; they say it looks rich. I love it, it's very sporty, it handles superbly through Los Angeles crest highway. I finished in first place in a novice class at the local autocross event taking on Suburu WRX wagon, Suburu Impreza STI and a couple of 240 SXs. The exterior design reminds me of Audi S4 model.

First off, I love to drive this car, its a lot of fun. But, I hate to own this car. It is the worst car I have ever owned. It only has 33,000 miles and I've had to have two sensors replaced, a transmission replaced, have the wiring and lightbulb under the cup holder adjusted because the lightbulb burnt a hold in the cup holder. Its just been one thing after another with this car. I was on the fence between an Accord and this car. I wish I would have gone with the Accord, because I would have a reliable car with good resale rather than a car about to fall apart. I will NEVER buy a Mazda again, and I will tell everyone I know to be wary, they are awful!

I bought my black 2006 Sport i 4 door for quite a good price with some hard bargaining. It is a fun drive to say the least. Took it on some mountain roads, and its low stiff suspension was a blast to drive. The Triptronic transmission that comes with the 5-speed auto is fun to drive. The car shifts through the first 2 gears real fast, and in its 5th gear overdrive, it's smooth and quiet. It's quiet overall, and feels much more solid around turns compared to the Accord I tried. It hugs the road and is well balanced. Even at 160hp it is still accelerates fast and takes over other cars on the highway with ease, and fun.

Mazda6 5 doors beats Accord and Camry

The new 2006 Mazda 6 is lot better than 2005; the seats are better, lateral support is superior, interior is quieter, suspension has been tuned and bushings have been replaced, the front disk are bigger, less fade, electronic height adjustable xenon light is a plus, the front nose, the skirt and the rear lights look more serious. Sure it would use 30hp more, but 0-60 in 8.2 seconds is quite good for a car that does 40mpg. The subwoofer from the Bose system could be better. Overall, for $30g, what car offers you volume, super big trunk with the biggest opening and an interior comparable to BMW, Lexus. I had 18 cars in my life, for the money, this is the best. The road handling is marvelous.

I've had my 6 i Sport with AT for about a month now and so far it has been a very enjoyable car to drive. I like the design (both exterior and interior), which offers a sporty look. The sport package adds a lot of nice standard features. The Bose audio system is great, although the CD changer should've been MP3 compatible as a standard feature. I find that the AT tends to be a bit slow to downshift sometimes, but maybe it's just my style of driving. Overall it performs well and smooth. The interior is quiet and well laid out. I'm getting about 27mpg so far in mixed driving, but expect that to improve a bit.

I've had a Mazda6 for a little more than a year. I've been pleased to say the least. I have the Bose sound system, the spoiler, the sun roof and all the extras and it's the Sonic Blue colored vehicle. The car has the pick up and go you'd expect from a sports car and had the comfort and reliability you'd come to expect from any automobile. The car is quiet, drives well, has great pickup and a sleek look. Definitely a fun car to drive no matter how far your going!

For around 15 grand, this is a lot of car. I got the base model with a manual transmission. Performance is OK considering it's a four cylinder, but the fun factor is increased by the great handling. I've been able to get up to 32 mpg in mixed driving, mostly highway commuting. I've had to take it in twice for minor emissions problems that triggered the check engine light, all fixed under warrantee. I swapped in a sport grille to make it look a little more sporty, and really am happy with my choice after 10 months with it.

Researched two years prior to buying. Handles like a BMW 3 series, but not close to the hp of one. Never enjoyed driving a car this much before. It tackles corners perfectly, gets good gas mileage, and looks spectacular. Overall a great car but I've it in for service at least 6 times over the 9 months I've owned it. Nothing major, just this annoying tweedle noise from under the car that they couldn't find. This last time I think they fixed the problem. They had to replace the catalyst converter.

Very fun to drive on highway or side road. Handles very well. Suspension provides very smooth turns and makes the petty 4 cylinder easy to control. My preference for a responsive ride is satisfied with the Mazda6. Mazda engineers provide an interesting gear ratio/shifting in our automatic that gets the most out of the 4 cylinder.

I got my Mazda 6 brand new a little over 2 years ago. I love this car. It's fast, handles great, comfortable, looks great, and I love the Bose stereo. Mazda has, however, really let me down. This car has been in the shop for warranty repairs six times! I've had problems with the fuel pump, transmission, A/C and even the key fob. I'm so torn. I love the car, and have unfortunately gotten to try others as rentals, but it is a huge hassle to keep getting repairs. When the warranty expires I don't know if I'll be able to afford such big repairs. I've even met other people that had the same car and had the same problems. Overall, don't buy this year, and beware of other years.

I custom ordered my Mazda6 Grand Sport and waited 3 months for it to arrive at the dealership. When I first saw it it didn't have the right 17" wheels I requested (even the Mazda Brochure shows the car can be ordered with 17" wheels), the paint on the hood had very noticeable streaks and overspray, and one of the tail pipe tips was totally mounted out of whack with the correctly mounted one.

12 visits to the shop in 16 months. What more can I say. Basically it has been in for warranty work about every 5 weeks. I contacted Mazda's customer service and 5 weeks later I get a call telling me that they are sorry about all the problems with the car. So, now I am stuck with a totally unreliable car that is horribly upside down because the resale on the cars is awful. Now this is all to a customer who has purchased 4 new Mazdas in the past 6 years. I just wonder how they treat someone that wasn't that good of a customer. My message to MAZDA, "I am done with you and will never grace your doors again". Thank you for showing me such loyalty. Mine was proven but now gone!

Just purchased a Mazda6 i AT. There is plenty of power with the 4 cylinder (don't believe all the reviews), the engine is willing to "rev." Like the smaller size of the car (not as big as a CamCord). The new fabric in 06 is definitely much better than previous models, the 5-speed auto works well with the engine. Buying experience was OK, Mazdas are in hot demand in my area (UT). Overall, a satisfied Mazda owner!

It handles excellently, and I consistently get compliments on the sexy look of the car. As a student, it's the nicest car around. The interior is comfortable, which is especially great for those long road trips. I highly recommend the Mazda6!

Mazda did an excellent job with the freshening of the 2006 Mazda6s sports package. Last year's model had a cheaper quality interior and a 6 speed auto transmission that didn't shift too well. Mazda has issued a TSB for 2005 models engine hesitation. We drove the '05 and '06 models back to back. The '06 is much more responsive with no more throttle lag. The fuel economy appears to be better too. We have been averaging 24mpg with the V6. The 6s is like Mazda improved on all of the minor complaints of earlier model owners. We compared it to all of the other cars in its class and it fit our style perfectly. My daughter was looking for a new coupe, but bought herself a new Mazda6s after driving ours!

I own a Copper Blaze Metallic hatchback with the 6 cylinder and the 6 speed auto. Great car that is plenty fast and looks great. A very visible car that hauls mulch, bicycles, or my wife and I to a fancy dinner. This car does it all. City mileage is a little disappointing (22-23mpg), but highway mileage is pretty good (28-30). With a decent size gas tank, 450 miles between fill-ups is easy. The manumatic is useless as in all cars but the 6 speed auto shifts nicely. Having to take the car in for an oil change is a bummer and Mazda will not sell the needed oil filter wrench through a dealer. Overall, a great value and a lot of fun.

I've had this car briefly. It's fun to drive and didn't have problems in the 5 months I had it. It was small though. The radio stunk as it didn't play mp3 discs and didn't have an aux input. It would've been almost $500 to upgrade to aftermarket because of a trim panel connected to the climate is $200. The ride was nice, the steering sporty, and gas mileage is good for the highway and mediocre for city. Good power.

This car is simply amazing, especially considering the rebates that are offered right now. I was originally looking at the Mazda 3, but I actually bought the 6 for less money and got more options. Value-wise, I don't know any other sedan that can even touch this, and I test drove them all. It's comfortable, quiet, has excellent handling and braking, and it's sexy! I love the sleek lines, both inside and out. This may be marketed as a family sedan, but I can see many singles loving this car, especially in the sportier versions. I have the automatic transmission, and love the option of being able to use manual when I need it. I can't say enough good things about this car!

Black with beige; 4 cylinder auto. Owned two months. Extra gear in 5 speed auto helps this engine a lot - very responsive with one or two aboard. Slower with 4, but acceptable. Engine a little noisy when pushed hard, but sounds good otherwise. Overall very satisfied, especially chassis, styling and comfort. Bose stereo is excellent. Michelins have low cornering limits - better with more air in front. Am getting 28.5 mpg every time in mixed driving. Very good steering and brakes. Excellent balance between ride and handling. Very quiet in highway cruise. Good price if you shop - almost $5k off sticker after $2k rebate, 500 financing and dealer discount. Compare before buying a 3Touring or S.

This car has greatly exceeded my expectations! After 50k miles, not one "issue" and getting 31mpg on freeway! Love the handling, fuel mileage, and excellent room with rear seat folded. A friend has the 2006 Camry and she has less room in trunk and cannot fit her road bike in back unless both sides are folded, resulting in her able to only take 2 people...with my Mazda, I can get one road bike inside with only one side folded down and still able to carry three people (2 front/1 back seat). I traded in a 1999 Mercury Cougar for this car after my brother was in a terrible wreck and lost a friend so I wanted it for safety! I love having all the airbags and the cage I feel soo much better driving. This car is amazing, it has the same pep as my Cougar but much better gas mileage (about 27 in the city). I went looking at a Highlander Hybrid or Mariner Hybrid but ended up with a luxurious roomy and comfy sedan for much less, plus the Mazda people were amazing.

Two kids in college took me downmarket from the Infiniti and Audi range but I'm not disappointed. Very smooth performance from the 6 speed auto which is well matched to the 6 cylinder engine. The S Sport model handles like a demon with very little body roll and is really a hoot to drive. Seating is supportive with a very good power driver's seat. Being over 50 I'm not crazy about the rear spoiler which smacks of "boy racer" but overall the styling is eye catching and sets itself apart from the plain vanilla of Camry and Accord. The ride is just a bit rough over bad pavement and expansion strips but overall this is a great car.

I have owned the Mazda6 since March now and put over 9,000 miles on it so far. It's a nice, sporty looking sedan but It needs some improvements. The engine sounds nice but in terms of power, it's lacking. At 215hp stock, i am getting smoked by Accords, Camrys and other sedans. The car handles good, but the turning radius is horrible and the suspension will rattle your teeth when the road is bumpy. Front interior is roomy, but rear is very small. Gauges look nice but the dark lettering and colors could be hard to read sometimes at night. Interior feels cheap too. Overall it's a decent buy, but for the money you can spend $3-4k more and get a Passat or a SE Camry.

The 2.3L 4 cylinder cars handle slightly better due to the reduced weight. The ergonomics of the hatch are unmatched in the sporty sedan market (even Saab dropped theirs). In addition to these features which put the Mazda 6 at the top of our list the car is a PZEV - partial ZERO emissions vehicle, meaning it pumps our 1/5th the pollution of similar cars. Also this car has a lot of Ford based domestic parts, including the new, larger, brakes from the heavier Fusion. Feel good about your ZOOM, ZOOM. It is not marketed as a car for flag waving greenies, but it is a car that feels good in more ways that just behind the wheel.

I've owned a lot of cars, including Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette. I test drove Toyota Camry and Avalon, Volkswagen Passat, Hyundai Sonata and Azera, and Mazda 6, Speed6, and CX7 ( 2006s & 2007s). I got this car new for $7,000.00 under list. Nice handling, comfortable ride for four people, good looking, good sized trunk, first tank of gas returned 19.5 mpg in mostly city driving, and fun to drive. Quality build and materials inside and out. No problems so far. I love this car.

I had one problem 4 days after I got it. The throttle casing had to be replaced. No fun trying to drive under 30 mph when in a 50 mph zone. Was fixed immediately, but had to drive it all the way back to the Mazda dealership, 2 hours away. Overall, I am very satisfied with how it runs now. Would recommend it to other potential buyers.

I have this car for a month now. The mileage right now I get is solid 30mpg (highway and city combined). I expect it to be even more when driven properly, not using the fun manual transmission (MT) and accelerating like crazy. MT is a blast in this mid size "sports" sedan. I was very much attracted towards the sporty look of this sedan. The drive is comfort. Brakes are awesome. And there is great acceleration when you need it. I recommend this over any other compact car that people may be buying especially when they are spending too much money on compact car. This car is not that big as other mid size sedans. It's the perfect size for people up to six and a half foot tall.

I have just bought this car a few days ago but I have already figured out that I made a good choice. I was looking for a car to keep and not keep trading every few years. I think I have found it in the Mazda6. I like the handling, equipment, styling, roominess. I have the 2.3l 5speed.

I just purchased my onyx black Mazda 6 hatchback just about a month ago. This is the first car I have ever purchased and I am loving it! I use my car for work so it is essential that it is very dependable.

Car is fun to drive, plenty of power, brakes are right there, handling fun to corner with, and sluggish start but kicks right in. I like the manual transmission option. Front seats and trunk is spacious. Easy to get in and out of the car. Gas mileage is exactly as quoted, as long as you don't drive it with heavy foot. Doesn't have OEM mudflaps for it. Steering wheel has plenty of adjustment, up, down, in, and out.

I bought this car to replace a totaled 2002 Mustang. Love the roomy, quiet drive. Best part of the design is the radio controls on the steering wheel... always loved this on the Mazdas. Nice safety feature for a young driver. I give it a 9+. Good gas mileage because of the 4 cylinder yet still good performance (160 hp).

I recently traded a 97 outback, began looking for something sportier, more comfortable, with convenience of space, initially was looking at a newer outback, decided on the 6 hatch. Just had to be patient to find the right one, which took about 4 months. I didn't really need the fully optioned g/s, but I did want the Bose and sunroof, glad I did, feels very comfortable on long drives, power of the v6 is acceptable, handles very well, steering is perfect, love the space of the hatch with seats down, HIDs are nice, economy is not great but not horrible 19 cty, 27 hwy, just love the sporty style. Haven't had any problems at all.
