Great Little Van
I was amazed how much interior room this little van offers to its occupants. The expansive glass and high seating make for a very good driving position with great visibility. Seats are comfortable and supportive and they feature adjustment for lumbar support. Steering feel and feedback are excellent. Interior material is high grade and everything fits together nicely. Fuel economy is acceptable for a 4 speed automatic and with careful driving you may get 24/30 mpg for city and highway driving. A/C can be improved for the back seat passengers. For those who want to improve and beautify this nice little van there is a bunch of accessories available from your Mazda dealer.
Family zoom-zoom
We have the Sport model with auto transmission. This is the best family mover we have ever owned. We're two adults and two kids and it is just amazing how much room Mazda fit onto such a small footprint! The design is very versatile and convenient and I have no problem adjusting seating to my 6'4" body. Gas mileage has been around 25mpg so far. Getting kids and gear in and out is a breeze with the large sliders and hatch. Have not yet tried to fit another person in the third row but it's nice to have the option. I cannot confirm any of the previous posts about insufficient power or too much noise. The ride is amazingly quiet and we have not yet found a hill we could not easily climb.

Perfect if you don't want to be typical
It's been almost a year and have not come across any problems. I don't have a gas mileage meter, but rough estimates put it at more than advertised. I can drive about 400 mostly city miles before the light comes on. Most problems I've had with cargo are solved with this car, sandbox, toddler bed, etc., have all fit. Having a manual makes you forget your in a minivan-ish thing, that happens to be the length and width of a typical mid-size sedan. Oh, and it's so easy to park, it turns very sharp, like a compact car.
Great vehicle for the money!
This car has so much to offer for so little money compared to the others in its class. There is so much room for the size. It is a great car to drive. Easy to see from all angles. Handles very well in heavy rain and on the highway.
Perfect fit!
I just picked up my new 5 so I haven't put very many miles on it yet. To my knowledge it is the first one sold in my area. I was looking at the Mazda 3 and Toyota Matrix when I saw the 5 on the lot. The Mazda 5 is much larger inside and out. While I was impressed with both the Matrix and Mazda 3 (I need the cargo space of a small wagon) the 5 has greater space in the passenger and cargos areas. At 6'4" headroom is always an important measurement for me. And even with the moonroof the 5 had 2 to 3 inches more headroom than the smaller wagons. The ride, steering and braking are wonderfully smooth. The engine pulls strong with no vibration. The 3 and the Matrix feel harsh by comparison.
