Great Little Van
I was amazed how much interior room this little van offers to its occupants. The expansive glass and high seating make for a very good driving position with great visibility. Seats are comfortable and supportive and they feature adjustment for lumbar support. Steering feel and feedback are excellent. Interior material is high grade and everything fits together nicely. Fuel economy is acceptable for a 4 speed automatic and with careful driving you may get 24/30 mpg for city and highway driving. A/C can be improved for the back seat passengers. For those who want to improve and beautify this nice little van there is a bunch of accessories available from your Mazda dealer.
Family zoom-zoom
We have the Sport model with auto transmission. This is the best family mover we have ever owned. We're two adults and two kids and it is just amazing how much room Mazda fit onto such a small footprint! The design is very versatile and convenient and I have no problem adjusting seating to my 6'4" body. Gas mileage has been around 25mpg so far. Getting kids and gear in and out is a breeze with the large sliders and hatch. Have not yet tried to fit another person in the third row but it's nice to have the option. I cannot confirm any of the previous posts about insufficient power or too much noise. The ride is amazingly quiet and we have not yet found a hill we could not easily climb.

The good and the bad
Good engine, great manual transmission. Car handles very well. 25 mpg in mixed city/hwy driving. The remote entry keys work less than half the time. Good thing I can still lock/unlock the doors manually. Absolutely terrible in snowy/icy conditions due to slick performance tires. Occasional strange lurch in 2nd gear. This is a small, economical minivan, not to be confused with a Honda Odyssey. Compare it to other compact cars, not the big maxivans weighing half a ton more. Overall, a pleasant driving experience. Good, reliable, economical transportation. No mechanical problems after 23000 miles, except as noted above.
It's the not so "Minivan" minivan
I really love to drive my 5. We use it to haul the family around and it does great. I love the lines and features you get for the money. Mazda did it right when they redesigned their line up and gave birth to this great new model. The sport shifter is great and the fuel ecomony is acceptable. The 17" wheels really help it stand out from the rest and makes me feel more sporty. When I drive this around I don't feel I'm driving a van. In fact many people ask me what it is. I have started to see more around and everyone I talk to loves it. Great car for the money and perfect for the person not ready for a really minivan.
6-passenger Sports Car
This is a combination that's been missing: a crisp-handling stickshift minivan from Japan. (Ok, it's available in automatic, too.) I want a reliable car that's fun to drive, but I don't want to have to rent a truck to bring home a TV or take newspapers to the recycling center. Mazda has taken the compact chassis of the Mazda 3 and mounted a little minivan on it -- the size of a station wagon, but the three-row seating and sliding doors that define a minivan. The performance is not that of a 250hp six, but neither is the gas mileage. Thanks, Mazda, for bringing the 5speed model to the US, not just to Europe. The Mazda 5 is sibling to the spunky Mazda 3, not the sedate Mazda MPV.
