Best car I ever owned but the check engine light went on. The shop could not give me an accurate price estimate bust said maybe thousands of $$$ so we sold it. This car never used any oil and had no rust (we are in the northeast - winter salt) so really hated to let it go. It always ran like a charm - wish all cars were so reliable. Original post :This is the best car I have ever owned - far superior to Mercedes vehicles I have had in the past. Bought it new and it runs great and still does not burn oil after 242k miles. Spark plugs lasted over 150k miles and first battery lasted 12 +years. The vehicle is rust free after 17 years in the northeast, where they love to salt the roads. Only negative about this car is the traction is not good in snow - otherwise the greatest car I have ever owned. Now up to 255k miles - still runs great and is rust free. Great car !

Best of the century

If you are looking for comfort, durability, high performance in terms of speed, miles per gallon, power, and low maintenance; look no further than the Lexus LS400. You would be amazed at the power generated from this car; it leaves many of the newer cars on the road at the slightest press on the accelerator. Transmission shift is so smooth you would never realized when it changed from on gear to another. The technology on-board is almost on par with newer cars. It alerts me when either of head or tail lights are blown. The seat belts at the front are adjustable, the front seats are heated and they are also adjustable to suit most drivers. The AC unit works efficiently without any significant loss of power on the engine. The shock absorbers and other suspension parts last almost a life-time compared to other cars. Maintenance cost is less than $300 per year if you drive approximately of 15,000 miles per year. The original battery lasts for 10 years. There are many luxury items in this vehicle such as the interior lighting for front and rear passengers, outlets on the rear doors to charge cellphones or provide power to gadgets, computers, tablets, and so forth. There is a lock under the steering wheel that locks the booth (trunk), you can also deactivate or activate the sound when locking the doors from the remote. If your windows are all up and you press and hold the "open door" symbol on the remote you will notice that all the window go down and the moonroof slides back. This feature is useful on very hot days to let out the heat accumulated before you enter the car. Alternatively, you can install a remote- start device that also puts on the AC. There are other features on this car that could be activated by Lexus. If your battery is dead and you attempt to open this car without following the right procedure, the computer becomes immobilized. That's a safety/security feature which I will not explain here just in case car thieves are reading. You have to apply a few steps to get reboot the computer. Even if you replace a new battery and try to start the car, it will not start not will you see any light on the dashboard. Everything shuts down. You would be amazed at the space inside this car, especially if you are travelling with large suitcases. I've installed a Pioneer AVIC 8100 double-din radio my 1998 LEXUS LS400 so I am able to speak commands using my smartphone with the Google. I also get to mirror my cellphone screen on the screen of my Pioneer unit so that allows me a bigger view of maps, messages, YouTube videos, etc. I do not have to hold my phone while driving; it only needs to be in the car and I can speak my messages, the unit will ask whether I wish to send it or review it. When someone sends me a message, the unit notifies me, reads the message, and asks whether I wish to reply.....this is without me having to touch or look my cellphone and the screen on the unit; so I am able to focus on the road. The unit also has a back up camera so I am able to see what's behind me when I am about to reverse. I also installed backup sensors so if I am too close to an object behind me, the unit would beep. So you could upgrade your LS400 to include all or most of the features of the newer cars. My next addition will be the blind spot device which would notify me whether it is safe for me to change lane without me having to turn my head to the left or the right while driving.

The vehicle handles like a dream. It is without a doubt an absolute great value. For a 10 year old car, it looks great! With over 100,000 miles, it remains extremely responsive. The fuel economy is awesome. I have gotten up to 30 mpg on the highway. This is the second Lexus I have owned. They are, without a doubt the best vehicles made.

SUPER RELIABILITY & COMFORT

Bought pre-owned @ 3 yr. old but with only 6800 miles. Have since pumped up to 56k. Now 9 yrs. old and have not put a single penny into it beyond maintenance. Drive is uninspiring around town but a champ on the highway. Cruises with uncanny smoothness. A true luxury ride with exceptional quietness. Blah, grandpa-like exterior (and who designed the ugliest alloy wheels ever?) but interior is attractive and plush. I probably won't but could keep car for another 15 years and it would still be an enjoyable ride. A bit jumpy off the mark. Even if you try to moderate throttle it tends to leap off line. Surprisingly fuel efficient on hwy (up to 28 mph) but premium a must. Mileage suffers otherwise.

There's Nothing More I can Ask For

This LS400 was actually my wife's car but sometimes we swap with my GS400. Both cars were fully loaded but the best feature that I enjoy most is the Nakamichi sound system. The safety features are the best in the industry and the reability and the built quality I can say, OUTSTANDING so far. Gas mileage in the LS is much better than the GS (both has the same engine; 300 hp for the GS/290 hp for the LS) The comfort and the pampering in the LS400 is beyond comparedriven BMW7series. Personally, I like the Lexus LS400 ride better, extremely quiet, vibration free, and of course it has an excellent reliability records.
