Overview

The compact UX SUV represents the entry point into the Lexus brand and offers buyers a fuel-efficient and well-equipped vehicle at a relatively affordable price. If the Lexus NX and RX SUVs are too big or expensive, the UX could be the model for you. There's also some good news for the 2025 model year. The new UX 300h version, which replaces the previous 250h, has a new hybrid powertrain and more power without reducing fuel economy. Some updates to the many advanced driver aids should help make the UX a bit more competitive too.

Edmunds spotlight: More power, slightly more efficiency

Our one major criticism of the previous UX was its anemic acceleration. During our instrumented testing, the UX 250h barely managed to hit 60 mph in 10 seconds, making its stellar fuel economy a small consolation. For 2025, Lexus has given the UX a new hybrid powertrain, boosting its power to a combined 196 horsepower, up from 181 hp. That extra power, combined with a more responsive transmission, should shave about 2 seconds off the UX's 0-60 time and make passing and merging less stressful. But fuel economy numbers are actually slightly higher than last year's model. Estimates for the UX are 43 mpg combined for front-wheel-drive models and 42 mpg combined for the all-wheel-drive option. Those are among the best fuel economy figures you can get from a luxury-branded SUV.

Competitors to consider

Models similar to the UX include the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA or GLB. All four of these SUVs offer more power and quicker acceleration but aren't available with hybrid powertrains. Other small luxury SUVs include the Jaguar E-Pace, Volvo XC40 and the new Alfa Romeo Tonale. The Tonale is notable because it's available as a plug-in hybrid.

Which UX does Edmunds recommend?

We like the UX in its Premium trim. It's reasonably priced and gets you some nice upgrades such as heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and the larger digital instrument panel. To that, we'd probably add the 12.3-inch infotainment system and the wireless phone charger.

Lexus UX models

The 2025 Lexus UX 300h is a small luxury SUV that is available in four trim levels: base, Premium, F Sport Design and F Sport Handling. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive optional, on all trim levels. Every UX 300h is powered by a hybrid powertrain based on a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Front-wheel-drive models have one electric motor, while all-wheel-drive UXs add a second, smaller motor on the rear axle. Both drivetrains are rated at 196 horsepower. Adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the Lexus and the car in front)
Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning (alerts you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
Intersection collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision during a left turn and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
