So I wrote about my car back in February of last year, this is an update. After the list of issues I had with the car from the moment I bought it brand new, the final straw was when the car wouldn't start with one try then once it started it wouldn't accelerate. At 70K miles I took it to the dealer who told me it was a faulty battery. 2 months later did the same thing, towed it to the dealer they told me, it was a fluke they couldn't repeat it and to bring it back in when it repeats it. I ended up trading it in for a Mercedes GL, I figured I couldn't do any worse in reliablity than what I had. I would NOT recommend this car to anyone.

LEXUS TAKES AN L

I bought my car brand new in 2006 and by early 2009 had to have the entire engine almost rebuilt. I also had to have the sunroof motor replaced twice. As for any kind of recall I was never notified about any of them. My fuel mileage has never avg'd over 30 on the highway at any speed. I like the interior except for rear legroom. The shape is great nothing but compliments on it. But for sure I will never in my life buy another Lexus product. Worse 33k I ever spent. I'm going back to Acura with the quickness. Lexus should never make another vehicle period. The most overrated luxury brand on the planet.

BMW 3 is better than IS250

Cons: Frequent exhaust leaks, headers leak, 6spd transmission is garbage (Lexus dosnt make 6 spds no more), transmission sounds like marbles, rust is a very big problem on this car from top to bottom. People say BMWs cost more than Lexus to maintain NOT true. Lexus will drain your pockets. Pros: Performance for small V6 2.5L is impressive, excellent handling, interior quality is much better than BMW, looks better than a BMW and most cars in its class. Overall I would stick to a BMW 3 series, for some reason the Lexus rust very easy causing expensive exhaust leaks that occur frequently. GO GERMAN they don't rust like Japanese cars!!!!! AND BMW has better Transmissions than IS250

I researched every car included in these reveiws. I did my homework including reading all the reviews in Edmunds. After several months of looking I finally decided upon the IS 250. I love the styling and interior. Performance is good enough to meet my needs. This car is an utter disapointment. It is the most uncomfortable vehicle I have ever owned. This would include an 81 Chevette. I have already attempted to trade. The car has lost 5K, having paid retail for the vehicle. Perhaps the most disappointing and expensive error in my life. The car is beautiful, but not practical or comfortable. I thought the other low scores were just complainers. Now I'm one.

Very fun to drive! great technology built into every detail, keyless system is wonderful. Acceleration is good but not great, interior is perfectly well crafted. The standard sound system is so great I can't even imagine how the ML system would be. The doors close like 50K vehicle. The side mirrors are as big as the ones on SUVs; great air dynamics when speeding at more than 60 mph; interior is quiet and the moonroof is very functional. MP3 jack plug is available but impractical until Lexus offers a way to control MP3 player via steering wheel controls. Or MP3 manufacturers offer interfaces. I believe Lexus will sell many many of these cars, BMW should be worried but not very much, for now.

My IS 300 was stolen and totaled so was not in the market for a new car. Test drove the IS 350 and hate that it was not manual. I was told good luck finding an IS 250 with manual trans. I found one and it's just a great car. So, much different than the IS 300.

Having been in and around the Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus business for the last 10 years, I have not yet seen a new luxury/performance vehicle that will have the impact of the new 2006 LEXUS IS250/IS350...I dare any reader out to drive the 3 Series BMW and then the new Lexus IS....BMW's lionshare of the young, hip, performance-based buyer HAS SIMPLY COME TO AN END! Needless to say, this is one of the best Luxury/Performance cars on the market at any price, much less for the 32k that I paid! Warning: do not go to the dealership unless in the position to purchase--- swore I would never buy a brand new car ever again... then I saw it, sat in it, and drove it!!!... And 32 mpg -- are you serious!

It's luxury and power combined. You can see your money's worth with all the useful features it offers. Their leather seats are of better quality than its main rivals. The gauges are very visible at any time. The state-of the-art voice navigation system is both useful and amusing. Though the passengers in the back may feel a little suffocated, the front passengers on the other hand enjoys ample amount of legroom, but you can be less greedy & move the front seats forward to compensate the lack of space in the back. They left very little room, if none, for after-market refinements. Its Power is more than what you need for day-to-day commute. It's a head turner on the road.

First of all, it's a head turner. great design which looks even nicer than the GS in my opinion. the interior is wicked lush, yet simple and functional. All the controls are intuitive and where you would want them to be. The 18 inch off set low profile Dunlops stick to the ground like white on rice (but this was an option I think). The seats are the most comfortable "chic" seats i've ever rested my fanny on (usually, well styled seats are uncomfy for me). And though it's purely a toy, the paddle style tipronic tranny is a blast, though the plastic used for them seems kinda cheap. Otherwise, gas mileage is great and of course, amazing Lexus customer service for less 35k.

I purchased an is250 in October and have driven it for 1,700 miles. The only problems I have encountered with the car are the following: The keyless ignition button makes a curious whirring sound when activated and when the driver's side door is opened after shut down. The dealer says this is normal operation. The engine compartment smells like something is burning when sitting in traffic for prolonged periods. The engine is covered with plastic panels. The dealer reports that the smell is normal and that there are no oil leaks. The car handles like a sports car and gets great gas mileage and is comfortable and relatively inexpensive. Hopefully it will also be reliable.

I am a loyal Lexus owner. This is my 3rd one and I just purchased the new IS 250. While I would have preferred a bit more power, the 204 HP is ample enough for everyday driving. When I test drove it, I was pleasantly surprised with the responsiveness of the engine. The interior quality is amazing: supple leather seating, comfortable, good stereo, well appointed dash, and a lot of sensors to check on this and that (still figuring out everything.) The body style is a killer! Everyone has complemented me on the looks. The car handles well on the road and the ride is very quiet ... an improvement over my IS 300. I love this car!

The car is a nice balance between performance and luxury, favoring the latter. Excellent handling. There are many great convenince features, but I think keyless entry/lock are the most convenient. Being able to unlock the trunk without taking out the keys are so convenient. Excellent Navigation system with voice recognition. My first Nav system, but seems very compreshensive and easy to use. I just switched from a manual car to automatic, so though the car has good power, I feel that it could use a little more power. The electronic shift controls do make the car more responsive, and great if your're used to manual transmissions. The car exudes quality and luxury, especially in the interior.

I don't want to say the same things that already have been said about this vehicle but WOW! This is an incredible car. I lament not having found one with all of the bells and whistles, but mine came very nicely equipped. Besides the standard stuff: rain sensing wipers: works great Navigation System: Incredible High Intensity Headlights: Amazing, it's like a wide beam of light from left to right with great intensity. Electric rear shade: very nice touch Ventilated seats: you can heat or cool your seat! electric memory seats in front: cool The rear backup camera is so cool and really show "everything" as you back up. The AWD grips like a tiger in snow and inclement weather.

Went from Toyota Avalon to this, details are wonderful, fit & finish above Acura TL or BMW 3 & reliability. Plenty of power when needed, 350 can't keep up with the AWD on turns and traction for the average driver so unless you drive all straights or need to always gun off the line or are a true experienced sports driver - the 250 is great. Transmission is wonderful, smooth & smart either auto or manual mode. The ride is stiffer than other Lexus, don't know if its the AWD, wheels or suspension.

I have always, always loved my bmws. I have driven and owned various different models and still have a 05' 545i. But I have to say Lexus came up with a really convincing competitor to the german factor. I love the handling, a little on the light side but very precise. The engine did not feel weak at all and I'm very happy with the way it responds. Gorgeous exterior design that is both aggressive and dignifying at the same time. The interior is also excellent with many convenient features.

My fourth Lexus after three M/Benz's and a very early Porsche 911 ('65). Have only 500 miles on the IS 250 but it corners like it is on "tracks" and can certainly get out of it's own way in traffic. Single criticism - a little too sophisticated with 15 personal adjustments of whistles and bells. Has taken me three weeks of studying to become familiar enough to have adjustments made (requires Lexus Tech.)

Very exciting car to drive. The style alone speaks leaps and bounds over the past IS designs. The interior has been designed with soft full leather seating and a tastefull mix of rich maple wood/stainless steel accents found in the GS models. The car's exterior is an "attention getter." The body of the vehicle is very sleek and the lines are well defined. The 18" wheel option is a must for any IS owner. The wheel design does a great job of complimenting the IS styling. Go test drive one, guarantee you'll buy it!!!

Bought new, always serviced at original Lexus dealership, babied this car. Had to replace all valve springs and gaskets at 25k mi and then replace all valves and gaskets at 40k mi. They tell me this has been a problem with a "handfull" of these cars, but I suspect a handful means at least several hundred. My car has been in no accidents, perfectly maintained, garage kept, driven daily. They say it is because the fuel injector sprays the valves from behind instead of from above, part of their outstanding design. No excuse for these major engine problems...period. Very disappointed. Won't buy another Lexus...EVER! Never owned any new car with such major problems at low miles.

I am updating my early ownership review to report that the dealer found the source of the burning smell coming from the engine. The dip stick tube that screws into the engine block was loose and leaking oil onto the hot exhaust manifold. The dealer repaired the leak by using teflon plumber's tape to reinstall the dip stick tube. I have not experienced any further problems with the vehicle to date. The dealer's original report of an oil leak from the valve cover was incorrect.

Paint finish is excellent; The 18s make a little noise but then most large tires do. I found the nav to be too busy. I was watching the road less and pressing buttons. Standard radio is great the bass will shake the mirrors. I’m ok with that. The paddle shifting is silly. If you want to shift buy the manual. I’m tall 6’3’’ and I find the interior ample for the size of the car.The rear has as much legroom as my GS400. I do not consider this IS 250 auto to be a sports car. It is a sporty sedan that is fun to drive. The IS 350 is closer and is much more exciting to drive. I however would get into trouble with that much pedal response; the car is just fast. The 250 handles great for a midsize sedan

I don't complain about the back set since this is compact sedan. What do I expect? If want more space on the back, buy GS 300.

Initially, we were in the market for a BMW 3series. But my husband nudged me to just consider the IS as well. It impressed me so much that it was a no brainer to get this car. And i managed to get it well below MSRP! Mine is glacier frost with the sports option and navigation. People really stare at this car. The handling is great, i dont even realize that I am speeding half of the time. It's comfortable, reliable and i take the longest route to get home. Now we are planning to change our SUV and Lexus will defintely be our 1st choice. There was actually nothing to choose from options as almost everything that i needed comes standard. LEXUS IS could only get better from here.

I took over ownership and payments for this vehicle, when my daughter lost her job. So when I started having engine problems, immediately I blamed them on my daughter's driving and lack of maintenance. Engine would overheat and the dealership took about 4 weeks to figure it out. About 3k$ later, heads, valves and the like had to be replaced. It runs fine now but, this is not the quality I expected from Lexus. I have owned Toyotas that were at 180k before a tuneup was needed. If you are looking for a dependable car, this is not it. Make sure you put repair money aside, because you will need it. I love the look and ride, but I've paid more than the expected to maintain this vehicle.

I was a happy owner of an IS 300. I couldn't wait for the new ISes to come out in AWD because I go skiing up in VT all winter. Why, why why did Lexus make the IS 250 only 204hp???? It's less than its predecessor the IS 300 and weighs close to 500bls more. This car is very slow off the line and is out performed by every car in its class. If you don't have to drive in the snow then the IS 350 is the car you want. You will be disappointed with the acceleration of the IS 250, unless you don't care about that of course.

I read how the IS 250 was "underpowered" and that I should go drive the BMW 325XI, so I did, and I still bought the IS. Main reason was the quiet interior and how I could enjoy the ride and sound of the audio system together. I also test drove both cars at dusk into night, and found the red dash and info center of the BMW very hard to read. The car surpasses all my expectations on comfort and handling. As for being "underpowered" it's more than enough car for me, looking down at the speedometer on the interstate and seeing 80 without even knowing it amazes me. The handling on our local back roads is also a great experience. One more thing, it was $4,000 less than a similar BMW.

I went to purchase this car in 2005 with all options availble knowing I'd keep the car years based on reliability. I have been surprised with excessive 'service' charges $80 to $200 for regular oil change visits. I've already replaced my tires at 17k mi which is extremely soon and my brakes and rotors at 29k. It's a great looking vehicle and reliable on the snow, however, replacing these main ticket items and 3 car recalls in 2 years so incredibly soon in the car's life is ridiculous to say the least.

Had to get a jump, Lexus dealer could not find problem. a Few times, I've had to push the start button several times to get it started. I'm going to replace the battery anyway. Brakes sound like an old wooden ship. Pads and whatever have been replaced. Door hesitates to open at times. acceleration poor. My confidence in this car is shrinking.

This car epitomizes the ultimate driving sedan. Sporty, yet luxurious, who can deny driving the new Lexus IS 250? I just got this car on Saturday and I am completely in love with it. I test drove the BMW 325i, Acura TSX, Audi A4, and the Infiniti G35. Out of the four, this one stood out the most. Though it is lacking horsepower, it's elegant design and sporty package made me choose this vehicle. This car is awesome and amazing on the highway! Plus, there are so many safety features in this vehicle, so you can't go wrong.

After looking at several cars I have always wanted (G35 Coupe, TSX, TL, 325i) I decided on the IS250 AWD. To me, it has the eye-catching exterior/ interior design, luxury/sport combination, and "cool" features I was looking for in my first "luxury" car. Anyway, I got the NAV and Lux packages - figured I should go all the way, lol. I LOVE them both... very cool/nice features. Will be nice to have AWD next fall/winter in Minnesota.

Compared the others. The interior decided the choice for me. The IS 250 lacks power to all the competitors, but I'm not drag racing either. Power is OK, exterior is at the top of the list IMO, but the interior and the materials are amazing in a car this price. I would have bought the 350 but had to have the stick shift. It gives the IS 250 that connection to the road that the smooth shifting Auto takes away, making it more sporty.

It's one week old and every time I get in this car it makes me feel great. The interior is a work of art and the outside isn't bad either. The handling couldn't be better here on the country roads of western Mass. I find the power fine for the way I drive. My wife finally really enjoys a car. Fuel economy is about 24 mpg after 325 miles.

I have had the IS 250 AWD in Matador Red since January. This car gets attention and everyone I have shown it to is very impressed with its styling and features -- they also love the color. I would recommend this car to everyone but then it would make mine less "special"

Best Choice for the Money

The Lexus IS 250 is not the fastest or most superbly handling sport sedan, but for the money it can't be beat. The styling, inside and out, is beautiful. The interior is well executed, with all controls easy to access in very comfortable seats. Has lots of safety features. The smaller engine provides plenty of power, unless you are addicted to neck-snapping acceleration. The ride is well damped but not jarring. It feels very solid. The engine at idle is so quiet that I once got out of the car not realizing I had left the engine running. I got the Mark Levinson audio system, which is the best OEM system I have ever heard. Overall, I love driving the car and look forward to a road trip.

I had to order my because I wanted stick shift. It took 2 months but is worth the wait. I had test drive BMW 325, nothing compare to IS250 is the BOMB! This is the best car I ever driven in. Love it, stereo awesome sound, I don't even use my key to get into or turn on the engine, as long at the key is my pocket than everything is auto. The best thing is that not many people have this car right now, so it really make me feel good to be driving it. If you don't have it yet, go get one. Awesome car, and it's worth every penny of it.

I have to say that I really find driving the IS 250 truly effortless! What a great car to drive. I am a 6'2 man and have so much room in up front to drive. YES the back seat is cramped but as a single man that was not a great priority for me. The Lexus is quiet, and an all around great car. I do not find it lacking in power at all. Save your money, and insurance cost and stick to the 250 as opposed to the 350. Great car, I am sold on Toyota products from here on out.

I cannot get over the fact I actually drive this car - I've researched many in its class (G35, TL, TSX, A4, 325xi, etc.) and hands down this car wins in all categories! May 2006 Consumer Reports recommended the IS as a top pick. This ride is worth every penny. I'm 6' 1" and I'm very comfortable in the driver's seat - plenty of room. I am very pleased with this car.
