Don’t listen to the cross-over crowd

I owned a Toyota 4-Runner for 3 full years. It was a wonderful vehicle but I really wanted something more refined. The GX 460 fits the bill perfectly. I am not a fan of the over rounded rear vehicle cross-over SUV’s. They all look the same, the shape of the cargo hold isn’t practical and they rarely even handle a few inches of snow well due to run-flats and low profile tires. I applaud Lexus/Toyota for refusing to go along with the cross-over crowd on the GX and 4-Runner models. When I compare the GX to the 4-Runner, I would say it’s much more refined on all fronts. The V8 engine is smooth and quiet, the acceleration is very solid - not a turbo, but more than sufficient, the seats are extremely supportive and comfortable, the Mark Levinson sound system is fantastic, the build quality and reliability are exceptional. Purchase this SUV with confidence. I’ve owned almost every make and model of SUV on the market and the GX is hands down my favorite.

OVERLOOKED GEM

I bought a Toyota Highlander and was very disappointed. It drove like a truck and was pretty spartan inside. It also looked like every SUV in the parking lot. I had problems finding my car in a parking lot. Before my seven days were up I returned the car. They had a GX 460 on the lot and one drive and I was hooked. The mahogany, chrome and leather were pretty sumptuous. Engine power was surprising. I loved riding so high up. (You definitely need the running boards if you are short). The front profile and height were easily identified on a lot. The Acura MDX I was used to had more pickup but was more car like as well. I give it 5 stars.

In the last 3 years I have owned the Q7 tdi, BMW X5 disel, Acura MDX 2014. I avoided the GX the last two years due to the camry fascia they put on the truck but for this year they changed it to their new F grills. I can tell you right now out of the listed SUV the lexus handles just like the BMW X5 without the stiff steering and suspension with KDSS standard. I have the premium model. The new MDX for 2014 lost the magnetic shocks that I used to love and was absolutely horrible I drove it for 2 months and traded it for a loss to get into the GX. The 2014 MDX had very bad body lean in corners the famous user interface has been butchered by Acura and was awful. GX interface is perfect.

Honestly ive owned everything from a range rover to a 911, ive have multiple german cars, a few Italian cars. I had to buy a new truck, so i decided to buy a certified pre owned gx460. Best decision i ever made. I do a lot of my own work, so i know my way around a car or truck. Its a body on frame truck- real deal truck with locking differentials. 4wd is excellent rock solid reliability cons its an older style/build- which i like most people don't watch the rust on the brakes with the road salt not great gas millage- my escalade ext maybe better 3rd row seat is for a child like under 7 super high resale value- your gonna pay a lot used lack of wood in interior- my father in laws rx has a more luxurious interior worth every penny- will save with lack of repairs extremely safe handles well i picked this over VW atlas, Range rover, Volvo x90, x5, x6, Acura MDX I have a 2 year old and need something safe and reliable. i plan on keeping it 10-15 years atleast. Nothing beats a Toyota. will continue to buy lexus

Not what you expect from a premium brand

GX460 Disappointment, 01/30/2021
2014 Lexus GX 460 Luxury 4dr SUV 4WD (4.6L 8cyl 6A)

I purchased a used 2014 GX460 with <65K Miles. There were a lot of decent reviews and the fact that this vehicle is related to the land Cruiser 150 Prado sold me. Just took it into the local Lexus dealer, dropped $1,300 on maintenance (71,500 Miles) and found out that the cam tower and front timing cover were leaking oil. So with an outrageous estimate to repair this issue of $4,650 I called Lexus USA. The vehicle was just out of warranty for mileage and time; however this is a premium brand and expected to last for a long time. The cam tower and front timing cover are not maintenance items and never touched, so definitely a defect in these areas of the engine. Lexus said they would pay spare parts and I must pay labor, labor being >90% of the cost, so no go for me. Looked on the web and found out that this is a known issue with this vehicle and engine. Well at least you now know that the premium price is not premium quality or longevity. Other than this issue and poor fuel mileage, I like the GX460, just disappointed in what I would have considered a robust reliable long term purchase. Time to sell this money pit.

I had before a 2005 chevy Trailblazer , 2005 BMW x5, 2005 Chevy Tahoe, but none of these are even close to the Lexus GX460. I do highly recommended.

This is a great, comfortable and fun to drive SUV. The interior is beautiful and functional. Great quality. Engine has lots of power to accelerate and pass cars on the highway. It's stable in sport mode on twisty country roads. It feels like you're riding on air, even on poor roads, and it offers rock solid handling. You can easily fit 3 large folks into the car for long trips, and probably 2 more for shorter rides. The extra row of seats in the back are OK for kids (and i assume mother in law types), and I keep them folded and use the space for cargo gear. but that's about it. I haven't used it much off-road, but for what I needed it handled very well and got me in and out very nicely.

The smoothest ride ever! Luxurious from front to back. So many features, my favorite are the heat & a/c seats and the heated steering wheel. I could almost live in this car it’s so roomy. I have always wanted a Lexus and it is more than I ever expected.

This is a very solid vehicle with a great engine and stereo. The throttle response is really sluggish, so a petal commander is really a must have. Makes the car come alive with a great v8 and really smooth and responsive tranny. Very relaxing to drive and comfortable. I’m 6’2” and 230lbs and fit just fine. Very good on rough trails and back roads, sand, even some moderately technical stuff. Love the full time 4 wheel drive.

Ignore the idiotic reviews dinging the GX. This thing is bulletproof. Comfortable ride. Nice features. Incredible resale value. I don't need some tech entertainment on an outsized screen while driving, it has the features any sensible person actually needs. And, again, it simply doesn't break.

While a premium gas guzzler, the GX's smooth refined ride may have you doubt it's body on frame construction. I bought the Luxury model with the Mark Levinson sound system. Wow! I feel like I may have paid a premium but that is exactly what I got. The resale on this is high too! Lots of comforts and conveniences without being over-teched. I would like to keep this for 5 years of so. Best SUV I've ever owned... new or not.

Fuel comsumption should be better since the LS models gets a Hwy. average of 25mpg. The rear door should open up and not to the side since all of Toyotas Suv'S open up, which is not only safer, but also keep the rain off when loading. Leg room in 2nd row could be better.

This Lexus GX has been a headache since the day it was purchased since new. The interior materials are cheap, rivaling fisher price products, the seats are hard and unsupportive, the suspension sqeaks and the dealer can’t fix it, etc. The car also suffers from technology that is slow, frustrating to use, and severely outdated. For a 4.6 Liter V8, power is minimum with poor braking to assist it. The steering is very vague. The car has had 4-5 unexpected visits to the dealer, fortunately covered from warranty. Did I mention rust? This car is already rusting, with it only covering 70,000 miles. The good points of this car include the dealer being easy to work with, and lots of room with the seats folded. For a 65,000 car, this car is in no way worth it.

This is my first Lexus which is made by Toyota, and I totally LOVE IT. You get the Luxury car with a very reasonable Maintenace upkeep. So long as you are good to your vehicle it will be good to you. Stay on top of your regularly required maintenance.
