Lexus' flagship SUV is a study in opulence, with nearly every visible surface in its whisper-quiet cabin wrapped in leather or exotic hardwoods, lush seats to sink into, and buttery smooth turbo V6 power. It can seat as many as seven passengers or as few as four. For 2025, the lineup expands with the LX 700h hybrid trim. The gas-electric combo, although gutsier, isn't much more efficient than the gas-only LX 600. Nor is the LX any more fun to drive — unlike its BMW and Mercedes rivals — or as roomy as its six-figure peers.

Driving experience

How does the Lexus LX drive? This three-ton SUV impresses off-road but compromises daily driving enjoyment. The LX 700h's turbocharged V6 delivers strong power, and the 10-speed automatic shifts smoothly. Edmunds tested the LX 700h and found it accelerated to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. However, the steering feels heavy and imprecise, while the brakes are inconsistent — lazy under light pressure but grabby when pressed harder.

Handling is underwhelming, with noticeable body lean in turns and instability over midcorner bumps. The LX 700h resists quick directional changes. On the plus side, the height-adjustable suspension absorbs bumps well, and the off-road tires enhance ride comfort. The Overtrail trim stands out, offering the ride quality you'd expect from a Lexus.

Visibility is quite good for a large SUV thanks to the tall windows and large mirrors. Driver aids are well tuned and unobtrusive, while off-road features like crawl control with turn assist and a surround-view camera system are useful if you like to get dirty once in a while.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Lexus LX? The LX's front seats are wide, cushy and supportive — like armchairs perfect for long drives. In the Ultra Luxury trim, the executive-style second-row passenger-side seat feels straight out of business class.

The cabin is impressively quiet, with excellent insulation from traffic and road noise. Even bumps are muted, though some wind noise creeps in at freeway speeds. The mix of physical buttons and touchscreens can feel overwhelming at first, especially with many off-road controls, but essentials like climate controls are intuitive and easy to use.

While the doors open wide and grab handles are plentiful, the high step rails and elevated seats can make getting in and out a bit tricky. The Ultra Luxury trim offers wireless charging and massaging seats in the second row, while Overtrail models trade these for a traditional bench — a practical swap. Passenger space is adequate, with rear seat climate controls standard across all trims.

The second row has ample space and accessible Isofix points, making car seat installation easy — though the seat height might be a small challenge for shorter adults. The cramped third row, however, isn't suitable for child seats.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The LX's dual touchscreens are a huge improvement over the previous model's finicky joystick controller interface. The 12.3-inch top screen does the majority of the work and is also where you'll see phone mirroring. It's crisp, responsive and easy to use. The lower 7-inch screen has a few main functions. Climate controls for the fan speed and air flow split is one part, but there is also a dedicated off-road screen to tell you information like pitch, roll, height and drive mode.

You also get the niceties you'd come to expect of a luxury product in 2025. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, the Mark Levinson sound system is fantastic, and there are enough USB-C ports to keep everyone topped up.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The LX offers up to 46 cubic feet of storage behind its second-row seats and can tow up to 8,000 pounds, both average for a large luxury SUV. With a third row, storage drops to as much as 11 cubic feet (LX 600) or as little as 7.2 cubic feet (LX 700h). Many competitors in this class are larger and offer significantly more cubic space with only a marginal increase in exterior size.

Towing is also less convenient, as Lexus does not include a trailer brake controller — essential for large trailers — and physically installing a hitch can be a hassle. On the plus side, small-item storage is plentiful throughout the cabin, though the lack of organization means items like water bottles in the center console may roll around.

Is the Lexus LX a good value? The Lexus LX is well built, with quality materials and a solid, rattle-free feel. However, it's priced higher to start than rivals like the Cadillac Escalade and BMW X7 and lacks some high-tech and convenience features expected at this level, as well as sheer space for things. The LX excels in off-road capability and durability, offering advanced systems that most buyers may rarely use. But it also delivers standout luxury touches, such as ultra-comfortable seating and thoughtful towing features. Value is highly specific to the buyer who appreciates these things.

Warranty coverage is typical, with four years/50,000 miles of basic and six years/70,000 miles of powertrain coverage. There's also one year/10,000 miles of free maintenance.

How’s the fuel economy? The LX 700h Overtrail is hybrid-only, but fuel economy remains pretty poor. The EPA says it will do 20 mpg combined (19 city/22 highway), and while this class of car isn't known for its efficiency, we would have liked more of an improvement than just 1 mpg over the gas-only model. The hybrid does add a hint of smoothness and is by no means a poor choice.

The 2025 Lexus LX is a large luxury SUV sold with two powertrains — LX 600 and LX 700h — and five trim levels: Premium (LX 600 only), F Sport Handling, Luxury, Ultra Luxury (LX 700h only) and Overtrail (LX 700h only). All trims except the Ultra Luxury come standard with a third row and seating for seven. The Ultra Luxury, true to its name, is configured for four passengers with second-row captain's chairs and cavernous room for reclining. Which LX trim does Edmunds recommend?

The base Premium trim comes so well equipped that it's simply a matter of indulgences to move up the trim ladder. An adaptive suspension, heated and ventilated front seats, navigation, and a small refrigerator are just a handful of the many standard features. We'd probably add the optional 25-speaker sound system, however. If you're leaning toward the LX 700h, we'd suggest the Overtrail. It's not only the most affordable version of the hybrid LX but also the most capable.

Competitors to consider

Three-row luxury SUVs abound, and many are roomier, drive better and start at a lower price than the LX. The Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMX X7 both handle like smaller, more manageable SUVs and are more fuel-efficient than even the LX hybrid. The Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade, while long and unwieldy in tight spaces, offer distinctly American takes on plush, leather-wrapped three-row luxury. Finally, the Infiniti QX80 is a more affordable and no less capable competitor that can tow up to 8,500 pounds.

The new LX 700h adds hybrid capability and a new off-road-oriented Overtrail trim. It shares its V6 engine and transmission with the LX 600, but it adds an electric motor and battery pack for more power and fractionally better fuel economy (20 mpg combined, a 1 mpg improvement). The hybrid approach is more about dialing up performance (yielding double-digit gains in horsepower and low-end torque) without making the LX any thirstier. That newfound power can come in handy off-road, making the new Overtrail ideal for adventurous LX buyers. Big all-terrain tires, three locking differentials, and multiple crawl, climb and descend modes give the big LX enough muscle to get well off the highway. Both the LX 600 and LX 700h are rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds.

Overall very luxurious SUV. Plenty of power which makes the 700 series LX the one to get. The drive is serene, smooth and quiet as you would expect from this level of SUV. Rear seats don’t move backwards or forward like the did in the LX 570, so for some tall people, the middle seats might be a little tight. The range on a full tank of gas is only 260 miles.
