bought this Jeep cherokee 4.0 4wd from a junk yard when i was in high school. After just a few hours and few hundred dollars replacing some essential components (brake booster) I have not had a problem with it since. I have done a lot of work to it, but that was my choice, not mandated by the vehicle, mostly just for fun. It drives great and shifts like new even with 200000 miles on it. Ive taken it through some serious terrain and never once been stuck. Also, if youre the type that likes to mod out your 4wd trail vehicle, like I do (even though this car is also my daily driver) then an old 90's jeep cherokee is the best car to buy. Easy to work on yourself, lots of support from forums and simple to understand. Its reliable, easy, and still a blast to drive even after 25 years of use.

I bought my 1991 jeep from a gal who used to drive it everyday. When she sold it to me it had a miss in the engine after looking it over I suddenly realized that the only thing that was wrong was the rotor tips were rusted. This vehicle has been extremely dependable and 275,000 miles on it. I also had a jeep liberty I bought in 2004 new and had more trouble with that suv than you could shake a stick at. I eventually sold it back to the dealer . It just goes to show ya that it's hard to beat the older jeeps and they were made back in the days when quality really meant something and customers were important to a business.

My 91 will run forever

The only cons about my Jeep are the lack of millage, also installing a new fuel pump is a bit tricky.Other than that I can go practically anywhere in it.I have driven it in the Desert the Mountains, even through Mud.Its hard to stop a Jeep.Overall its been one of the best overall vehicles I have ever owned, and I intend on keeping it till it dies,or I do 3 plus years later and she still runs perfect! The old Jeeps were like Volvo's they run forever,it will take quite a bit to kill a Jeep. Its now 2018 and she's still going, strong as ever!Recently put new shocks and tires on it,as well as a cold air intake. Its got more power than before, but still has some of the worst Gas millage of any vehicle I've ever owned.Fully loaded gets 11 miles to the gallon, otherwise about 17 to 18 miles to the gallon. Overall though still driving it practically every day! I'm actually looking to sell my Jeep as I'm moving somewhere I won't really need it.It still runs like a champ, just added all new Shocks and removed and sealed the Gas Tank,so good for another 20 plus years of driving.

Vic's first but not last Cherokee 4X4

Love the body style -- '91, fun to drive on or off road. The 4.0L is quite peppy, no problem towing even on steep grades. The heater will bake bread, even with the windows down. The air conditioner works well too. All in all ... I'll buy another!

This is the first car that i've owned, and I think that it was the best decision I could have taken. Although I wasn't very pleased with the exterior, but I fell in love with the reliability this car has to offer. The only thing i have done to this car is the essentials(oil, brake, and tire changes.) It runs great on freeways at 70 and above.

I was given this Cherokee as as gift. My friend thought it had as bad rod but I found the torque converter was loose. I tightened it up and now have 481,000 mile on him. He is my daily driver. I own a 1989 Cherokee and a 2008 Grand Cherokee both those my wife drives. I also have two Grand Wagoneers, full size, we won't own anything else, thank you. As of June 2019 I have 495,000 on this Cherokee. As of December 11 2019 I have 498,125 miles on this Jeep. Redjee still is my daily driver. I haven't changed anything except for the usual things like the alternator, water pump, brakes and such. I have been a firm believer of changing oil at 3,000 miles. My daughter makes me change her oil and filter at 3,000 miles religiously. She has a Jeep Liberty. Check in on me after a half million miles and I'll give a compression reading for you. Thanx. Well Redjee has 507,000 miles on him and still running strong! It's now June 2021. Did not do a compression test yet but why bother? He's still stompin asphalt. I haven't replaced anything since 2019.

Bought my Cherokee back in October 1991 and 17 years later I still enjoy driving it. Took my honeymoon in it to Colorado, I brought my 3 kids home in it from the hospital and countless fishing trips were taken in it. Three years ago, I gave her a fresh coat of paint. My wife can't understand why I continue to keep driving it, but she isn't a Jeep owner. Low maintenance, drives like a tank in the snow and runs smooth. Today, I still see early 90s Cherokees on the road and they are either great looking or beaten up.

I have to say, that I have owned some nice cars in the past, but I would be happy to trade all the creature comforts of the higher priced cars just for the reliability of this jeep. The 4.0 has enough power to get over/around what I need it to, when minor repairs are needed they are easy and don't cost much... Not many vehicles can be driven over 220,000 miles and still look forward to a long life to come. THIS ONE CAN!

I've got 197,000+ Miles on my '91 2-Dr Cherokee 4x4 with the 4.0L I6. I've only had to replace the tires, brake pads, and change the fluids. I've taken it places never intended for anything with wheels, and it just keeps on going. XJ's ROCK!

I've owned this car for 11 years. The only significant repair was a radiator at 115,000 miles ($800). This has been an excellent vehicle from a reliability standpoint. With the 6 cylinder engine, power is adequate. My only issue is that it rides like an SUV (bouncy ride), but rides great on the freeway. There is exceptional interior space for passengers and cargo, especially considering its short wheel base (which makes it easy to park). It also has a strong a/c. From speaking with other owners (1991 model year), the '91 is either very reliable or constantly in need of repairs. The bad ones are mostly off the road by now. Most 1991's still on the road are likely good cars.

I've got 112000 miles on my 2 door 4X4 and have had it in places goats wouldn't go. Only the electric antenna broke during the first 100K. I put highway tires on after the first 80K (& the original off road tires still have plenty of tread left). The only problem?. . . I can't hear on the cell phone because of road noise. I owned a 280ZX turbo before my Jeep, and the Jeep has been more fun to drive in more places for more things, by far. I'm ready for a sedan now, but I'll not trade in the Jeep. It is good for at least another 100K miles of hunting, hauling and commuting.

When i first bought my cherokee in may 1996 it had 100,000 miles on it already.with a touch up in the paint and some new tires it was just like new.I took that so far in the woods that the only vehicles at the end of the trail was a jeep wrangler and another cherokee. And the jeep has quite good acceleration too.when i hit the gas there is this amazing felling of raw power i tell ya i would never get rid of it!

I am at 140K and have done very little to keep my Jeep going. I now live in CO and use it off road regularly. This is easily the best vehicle I've owned, and I've gone through a lot of others while I've kept my Jeep. It's still strong and lots of fun. My kids will probably learning to drive with it 8 yrs. from now.

166,000 miles and running strong. I plan to have the hood repainted due to the clear coat breaking down. I noted minor rust at the corners of the overhead cargo rails - buffed and repainted it with no rust through. I have not detected rust anywhere else. The engine is expected to hit 300,000 without major repair - that from my dealership who routinely see them. The engine (I6 4.0 liter) is the BEST and my new Jeep Grand Cherokee was purchased with it.

my Jeep has 105,000 miles now. I bought it with 28,000 10 years ago. I just put in $480 for a new water pump and thermostat - car had to be towed off the highway for overheating. New brakes, belts, dist. cap, and little things is all I have had to do with it for repairs. Oh, the factory clear coat was poor and I had to repaint it. Don't know if I should sell now or expect another trouble free 100K miles?!

My '91 4dr, 4WD Laredo has had it's 2nd. ABS actuator pump and motor assembly recall performed. Car has only 100M miles. Could not get a single Long Island Jeep dealership to repair this lifetime recall. I've been lied too, delayed and ignored by Westbury Jeep-worst offender. I found Chrysler corp. to be un-cooperative. I assume they don't want to repair a '91 vehicle... bad for their new car sales. DOn't let this similar abuse go un-reported by yourselves. Write to the BBB and Consumer Affairs.

Over 322,000 miles (mostly highway) and still going strong, on only its 3rd set of Michelin tires. Still getting 22mpg. Has pulled large logs and hauled up to 3,000 lb of rocks without complaint. Has always felt solid, secure, and reliable. Have loved this vehicle - wish everyone could own a car as good as my Cherokee has been for me.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this car. It is 13 years old and has 145k miles on it, with no engine or tranny problems. You cant find that in many cars. I experienced an oil leak, and had been driving with out oil for awhile w/out realizing, and that still didnt cause any extra problems. Jeep Cherokees are very reliable and dependable.

I bought this Jeep at public auction, and it has been a good car but not a great car. Repaced in 4 months. Thermostat, Serp Belt, All fluids, Oil Twice, Tire weights, Tire allignment, Tire ballancing, CV joint, Steering column bolts, Radiator, Muffler New transfer case Chain! Overall it has just been one repair after another. Fun to drive but lousy Gas mileage. Mostly previous owner abuse problems. Check out VERY CAREFUL!before you buy used.

I've been driving my '91 since I bought it in 1998 and have been averaging about 13k a year on it. It is tough and doesn't ride like a car because it was built how an SUV should be built. Great handling on- and off-road with comfortable seating for 4 normal sized adults. Good power out of the 4.0L I6 and the AW-4 automatic has proven itself as well. The '91 is an easy year to modify with plenty of donor vehicles from '91-'96 and works great for what it was built for. I plan on keeping mine until I really kill it and then I plan on fixing it so I can keep on driving it. Well worth a reasonable price to purchase one.

I have owned Jeeps since the day I started driving. This one is GREAT! Comfort, reliability and durability -- what more could you ask for. At 14,800 miles it's still running strong. It is definitely the best for any outdoors person, and stylish enough to take it out on the town. Pure pulling power, so don't be afraid to hook up your trailer or boat. Smooth ride on the highways, but remember to replace the shocks when needed. If you can find a clean one don't hesitate to buy it.

We bought this Cherokee brand new in '91 and it has been nothing but relaiable for our family for 12 years now. We now have over 207,000 miles on it and it still runs like it's brand new. The only parts we've had to replace were the radiator (just recently) and the starter. Just keep the oil changed relatively on time and it will last forever. Buying a Cherokee used or new will be the best choice out there for the money.

I bought my Cherokee as an "emergency purchase" when my Camry decided it was done with me, and I absolutely love it! Had to replace the brakes about 2 months after purchase and fix an oil leak about 7 months after that, but overall I really do enjoy this car. Has most of the features of a modern car (ie: power everything and good a/c. Mine came with CD player, keyless entry, and an alarm as well) and the durability that Jeeps are known for.

Not too happy with the Jeep, transmission is horrible, too tall of rear end gears so there is no power in 3rd gear, no top end. At 120k and replaced ball joints, CV joints, thermostat and housing, power steering pump, and now having electrical problems.
