Used 1997 Isuzu Rodeo Consumer Reviews
Good SUV But Requires lots of Work
I bought my Rodeo back in October of 2000 used. For the First Year I had no problems with it. The second year the speed sensor went first. Then the rear door window motor went bad. Next the alternator went bad. I fixed all of those problems, but currently the engine makes this awful ticking noise that I can't seem to figure out, and it goes through a lot of oil. I just turned 104k and replaced the oxygen sensors, all four of them. Since I do my own work and have my own diagnostic tools the cost of repair has been low. Very good in the snow, got me through a tough winter last year while my neighbor in his Explore could not get out of his drive way.
Love my Rodeo
Bought my '96 with 91K miles after much review and a short rental. I love the way this SUV handles tight with no top heavy feeling. I run Michelin tires and this always improve handling. I have replaced the alternator and starter, just normal wear and tear. Love the way the Japanese make rubber parts to last and last. At 12 years old this is still one clean and sharp truck. I would buy another in a minute and recommend to all. Truck has an odd oil reading, constantly 1 quart low but no reason? I have had my mechanic comment this is the same with all Rodeos and I have no related problems. Head gaskets haven't been super tight since purchase but they are hanging in there just fine.

Very Safe Vehicle
My 4WD Rodeo has served me well over the past 7 years. We take long trips (1000 mi one way) with no problems. The key I believe is REGULAR maintenance (30k mi services). I have been rear-ended 3 times and 1 front end collision in 7 years. The other vehicles all sustained much more damage than my Rodeo. I love the REAL Steel bumpers on the 1996 model. No after market parts except fog lights. I don't understand why this model was rated so poorly in safety tests. My family prefer to ride in the Rodeo that our Legend when the weather is bad. We just go to four wheel drive and never worry. Highly recommended.
Isuzu reaks......
Since I've bought it, I've had brake problems, belt problems, tire problems, steering problems, transmission problems, chassis problems. It's been pretty much hell for me.
Best Value for an SUV in this class
I purchased this vehicle used with 68k miles. I have only replaced the brakes so far and now have 94k miles. I consider this SUV to be the best value in its class. The competitors are more expensive and the performance isn't as good overall. I would buy another Rodeo
