How Hyundai has let me down.

2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.0T 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

In June of 2017, I took in my 2012 Hyundai Sonata for an oil change at the Hyundai Dealership in Coconut Creek and I ended up purchasing a brand new 2017 Sonata Sport, mostly because I really liked the Android Auto feature (a feature that connects your phone to your car and permits you to use your phone while driving through voice activation) and I felt pressured by the salesman. I had a Samsung Galaxy S7 which worked perfectly with my car for almost 9 months with no hiccups. About a month ago, my Android Auto begun disconnecting randomly, sometimes while I’m driving, far away from home, completely dependent on my GPS and the synchronization between my 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport and my Samsung Galaxy S7 would abruptly end, forcing me to disconnect the USB cable, unlock the phone, turn the Bluetooth off, sometimes restart the handset (all while driving) in hopes that it would work when I reconnect. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten lost or missed turns. I begun receiving warning message on my phone stating that the software in the car was not compatible with my phone and that it needed to be updated, so I dropped my car off at the dealership, told them about the issue and expected when I pick up the vehicle later that day, that the problem would have been resolved. Boy was I wrong. The person who serviced my car, put a note in there stating that his phone connected and that it works. Obviously, when I get in and connect the phone, it connects, its randomly after some time the connection breaks and this foolishness begins. So, I reached out to Hyundai so basically told me that I need to use an old phone if I want my car to work. I have to use a Galaxy 6S, iPhone s6 or older. Well I almost $hit myself. They’re got to be kidding right? I decided, maybe it’s a problem with my phone, because my phone begun freezing each time I disconnected it from the car, so last week I spent $750 and bought myself a Samsung Galaxy S9 and I was so excited thinking ‘finally, my car will work like it ought to again’. NOPE! It worked with the brand-new phone for 20 minutes before reverting to the same issue. In addition, there’s a notification on the screen in the car that blinks continuously saying ‘reading USB’ followed by ‘Unable to connect’. Don’t even get me started on the time my trunk lock stopped working while I was moving into a new apartment and all my stuff got locked in the trunk or the fact that I can’t pump more than 4 dollars worth of gas without having the pump stop and having to just hold the lever on the gas pump down until I assume my tank is filled to avoid spillage. I am beyond frustrated and angry. At this point the car was not worth wasting this much money over. I wish I never bought it, should have stuck with my 2012 Sonata, never had any issues with that one. They refuse to fix it, they don’t know how to. I’m really disappointed and wish there was a way to get them to take the car back if they can’t repair the 1 feature for which I purchased the car. Don’t waste your time, effort or money guys, trust me, the stress is NOT worth it.

Knock sensor knocks his car out of desire

Knock sensor knocks his car out of desire I’ve had this car in eight times for this faulty recall knock sensor the last fix was software that bypasses The knock sensors ability to detect certain symptoms. Looks like Hyundai decided to hide the problem rather than fix it

I bought the car new in 2017, Sonata Ltd. Rides like a dream. I have 68K miles and find out now the Theta1 engines will burn oil. The engines have to be replaced and getting one from Hyundai appears to be a nightmare from what others said. Also they wont be making Sonata's any more so the 2020 version is the last updated model. I drove a 2023 SEL and I could feel the difference---the suspension was not good and you can feel the bumps inside the cabin. The headroom was lower than the 2017. My 2017 Sonata Ltd. you cannot feel the bumps as the suspension absorbs them. Now Im faced with wanting to keep my car and have Hyundai put in a new Theta engine but that engine will also leak oil eventually. I think its coming from the rings. I will be trying out other cars now since I know mine will lose oil faster and faster. Right now its a quart in 1000 miles. Other models are also affected--The cars with the allegedly faulty engines include the 2012-2020 Hyundai Elantra, 2009-2018 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, 2019-2021 Hyundai Kona, 2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade, 2010-2012 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2009-2010 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Sonata, 2011–2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2010-2013 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Tucson, 2011-2021 Hyundai Veloster, 2020-2021 Hyundai Venue, 2010-2021 Kia Forte, 2017-2020 Kia Niro, 2011-2020 Kia Optima and Optima Hybrid, 2012-2021 Kia Rio, 2011-2020 Kia Sorento, 2012-2021 Kia Soul, 2011-2020 Kia Sportage, 2018-2021 Kia Stinger and 2022 Kia K5. Theres a class action suit against Hyundai. Its very hard to get them to replace the Theta1 engine. https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/hyundai-class-action-lawsuit-and-settlement-news/hyundai-class-action-alleges-excessive-oil-consumption/

So far my 2017 sonata has seen no major problems, however when I start the car in the morning, I hear a thump sound coming from the left side suspension. Any one have any similar sounds. I would take it to the dealer but am afraid they would intentionally would do something to it for a repeat visit plus charges

2017 Hyundai Sonata SE

I love my sonata! I bought the base SE model and had aftermarket leather seats added. I have owned this vehicle for 3 years now and have 55,000 miles on it. I truly enjoy owning this vehicle and it has to be my favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned. I still enjoy how well it drives to this day! The only issue I have had with it was the trunk latch went bad and had it replaced under warranty. I've never owned a Hyundai before and I’m hoping that it lasts me well above 100,000 miles.

Sonata with the works

My Sonata does almost everything well. Very roomy too. The only negative is the steering on the highway. While adjusting on a straightaway, the steering wheel should be a little looser as in every other car I have driven. It is just a little bothersome. Otherwise, I really like my Sonata. I bought it new with a 6000 rebate at the time and a 3998 discount from the dealer and on top of that another 750 if I financed through Hyundai which I did for about 3 payments then switched to the local cu and saved a bunch in interest. I paid 21K for a car with a sticker of almost 32k. Not bad at all. I am sure they will be putting heavy incentives on the 2019's soon.

Could be better

Got the base model Sonata SE. It’s roomy, comfortable & easy to drive. Power windows, media center with Apple Care, backup camera & alarm system are standard, but the cloth covered seats are manual. It doesn’t have all the fancy technology of more expensive brands, but it has enough. It does have a couple of minor issues that are annoying. Apple care is finicky & although v/m should be accessible, it will not play. Sometimes when the dash gets hot from the sun or the heater has been on for awhile, the media center goes black & there’s no way to play music, access gps or use the phone. It’s happened a handful of times over 3 yrs. Tthe dealership can’t diagnose it because it never stays off when the car is in for service. Another annoyance is the way the trunk lid area is designed. When it rains, it collects in the channels surrounding the trunk lid and it will literally collect 1/4 inch of dirt/pollen/debris & remain damp during cool weather. It’s extremely messy to clean off & has to be done frequently in the winter, which has never been an issue with any other brand I’ve owned. There are a couple of major concerns. First, there was a recall for a software issue & after the update, the car doesn’t run quite the same. There’s been a slight decrease in mpg. So far there hasn’t been a major mechanical problem, but it must be a serious issue with other Sonatas because Hyundai added a year to the warranty. The 2nd issue is the car isn’t great in a wreck. Was driving 45 mph & had a jeep wrangler with a wench turn into the drivers side of a previous Sonata SE. Jeep had a scratch, but every panel on the Sonata’s driver side was damaged from front fender to the rear of car. The front axle also broke & the car was totaled. Despite that, the airbags didn’t deploy. Although there are some issues, I like the Sonata SE enough to replace the wrecked SE with another one. The Sonata SE has room for improvement. However, for the price, it’s a descent ride.

2017 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0T

Bought vehicle January 2020 Downsized from 2008 Cadillac cts. I have to say I don't miss the Cadillac, the sonata is smaller but more roomier inside. Great on gas, I go two weeks on tank full. It's it little sluggish than the Cadillac, I have learned to live with it... my only concern is longevity... the vehicles are known for engine issues... but I have to say Hyundai is backing all their sonata from 2011 to 2019 and replacing engines when they fail....... I'm at 43,000 miles now and so far so good. Let's see what future has in store for my sonata...

Heavy oil consumption

Uses alot of oil before getting to 1000 miles, slow drag when pressing on gas, car will just stop. Spark plugs burn out before they should, bad break system, doesn't get good gas mileage, many of the white sonata have manufacturers paint defect on the right side of the top roof. When car is up to par it runs really good but to be a new car when I got it is to many major issues going on.

The "6.4 Powerstoke" of Gasoline Car Motors

Anthony , 01/31/2025
2017 Hyundai Sonata SE PZEV 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 6A)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

As i referred to and if you are familiar with a 6.4 Diesel motor from ford these motors from Hyundai are in the ways of a gas motor as problematic. As most know of Campaign 953 where the connecting rods go in the motor. This is a Recall and covered by the manufacturer however for them to do any testing on the engine you need to have the check engine light blinking. In the case of my cousin who owned a 2011 that did not happen and his died in the middle of the road . The 2017 that my mother owns has a separate issue that they do not recognize or take accountability for is a issue with burning oil. More common in Tuscans it is prevalent and something im dealing with in the 2017 Sonata. Basic Break Down i noticed and felt misfiring and low power mostly when going up hill. Driving away from red lights without a jolt became harder which may be unrelated but it seemed harder to ease from a red light. The oil Change was last done in October of 2024 the oil light came on January. 8th 2025. There was no oil on the stick ! putting a 5 full quarts in and beginning to research the issue i thought i would covered and eligible for a new motor. Reading online i couldn't find a straight answer of what was covered. I brought the car into the dealer which is when i was informed a light needed to be on to test for the connecting rod issue ... at least to have it under warranty otherwise it was $150 and from what was going on no one thought nor did think that was the issue at the time. The dealer topped the car off on January 10th at a full 5 quarts. as of yesterday January 30th so 1 day shy of 3 weeks there may be 1 quart left. The oil was on the stick however it was just on the bend on the very bottom. So realizing this issue is separate from the bearing rod recall from what i was told by 3 separate dealers is this issue is on me. They can do a series of tests one of which will 99% not work and cost $800 and if it doesn't work that determines you need a new motor and that is a cost on you 100% so im told. Now obviously if you bought some type of warranty these details could be different in your situation. We bought the car second hand from a rental company so theres grey area in the warranty being transferable with certain aspects of the car. The 100,000 Mille warranty is also a grey area as we are at 97,500 and they want nothing to do with the oil burning issue unless we pay for diagnostic , series of testing and in the end a new motor. Why a new motor? In the end this issue will not only burn more gas and need constant oil added which are both costly it will in time clog the catalytic convertor and a list of issues one can only imagine from there. There is no "Fixing it" the lower end of the motor is gone and can not be saved. The upper part of the motor is what hyundai covers under recall. You may read other people having different experiences with this issues however i haven't read any who have had it covered. So now today still currently owning the car we will need to sell it and get something else to avoid a $6,000-$8,000 motor Replacement. Anyone who owns this car i would advise to be aware of what its doing and get rid of it if this issue arises. In total i would sell the car all together with the number of issues the engines have. If you are looking to buy one of these cars needless to say if you are still reading do not waste your money even with a "extended Warranty" as those are fine print scams often and do not cover labor or certain aspects of things. In the case of my cousin he got a free motor replacement for the bearing rod issue. After that the Motor has a lifetime warranty but im not sure what that means if its 100% covered no matter what cause mostly likely it isn't. Like any large corporation they are not gonna claim responsibility for things they dont need to and as a consumer we all should know no Corporation is exempt from that.

adding to title, do not know if suspension is different than sport but sport was more planted. sport has better wheels and tires and 300 more lbs which perhaps adds to more refined ride. acceleration not much different in time but eco shifts can be rough at lower speeds.

Bought a 2017 Sonata 4 DR. Was not told by Dealer/Sales or Management that the Navigation system in my Sonata was only workable when MY CELL phone was pluged into the automobile's port. When I went to another dealer, then I was told "the Sonata Limited" had Navigation that did NOT require what I was told at the first dealership. PROBLEM was I already purchased the first one. I was so upset that in ONE weeks time I turned THAT Sonata in for the one I did not know about earlier.. Shame on Dealership

Bluetooth: All of a sudden I can't get the car's ringtone to sound even though my cell phone is alerting me of an incoming call. I've been to the dealership and T-mobile. Zilch! I say something somewhere is on "mute". No one is "expert" enough to find the problem, however. Radio Channels: I bought my car second hand and tried to delete the former owners selection of radio stations. No-can-do. The channels can be overridden but not deleted.

Within 5 months and 5000 miles of purchasing a new 2017 Hyundai Sonata, I had to replace 3 tires. With minimal or jerk or hitting the curb, the tires burst. If you think I drive poor, for a comparison, I have been driving a Rav4 for 25000 miles and still have excellent quality of tires in it. I'm done with Hyundai vehicles, I cannot drive in constant fear that when my next tire is going to burst. I'm really scared of going on highways on high speeds or take my family out in this car. I'm replacing this car as soon as I can.

Good leg room and good on gas, but time for the problems. I’ve had the car for about 2 months now. The air recirculating does not stay on. I have to constantly press it. Drive behind a dumpster well this car doesn’t care and will turn off recirculate so you can get a good smell of it. From what I’ve looked up it’s a standard feature that has to be turn off every time you start the car. The blind spot monitoring sometimes does not work if I’m going too slow and the touchscreen takes FOREVER to recognize my phone. Sometimes it takes 1 entire minute. My old 2011 Mazda 3 Bluetooth system wouldj find my phone amount instantly when the car started.

I bought this car new. It now has 65,000 miles on it. It hasn't had a single issue so far.

The trunk is huge. Easily fits my golf clubs & cart. The posi-traction is great for snow. I live in upstate NY. It's very quick to react. Car gets great mileage or power in Sport mode.

Worst car I’ve ever owned

This is the 5th car I’ve ever owned. It is by far the worst one. They get stolen easily and their engines are terrible. The interior is about as basic as can be. Don’t buy this piece of junk

An oil guzzler with unsightly paint peeling

Will start with the good. I really like the interior. It seemed to fit like a glove for me. I didn't feel as boxed in as I did with other cars. It has the creature comforts and conveniences that would be expected at the price point. A little underwhelming on the road but good enough. Now for the bad. The engine reliability is awful. This thing burns oil like nothing I have seen before. This should not happen at 60,000 miles with regular maintenance. The recommended oil change interval for this vehicle needs to be lowered. With very frequent oil changes and engine flushes this car may stand a chance to make it to a more respectable mileage. Because it's a dirty burning engine expect higher maintenance bills for cleaning and replacing parts that prematurely get carbon coated. Like the throttle body and spark plugs. The service charges will quickly add up and might not even prevent premature engine failure. It's well known by Hyundai that these engines are unreliable. If you are under warranty you might be able to convince the dealer to replace the engine if you documented everything and are persistent. Make sure to read the fine print because if you're not the first owner you're very likely not under warranty anymore. Finally the paint job is abysmal. The paint started peeling off when the car was only about 5 years old! After warranty expiration of course. It went all the way down to bare metal so it starts to rust. The white paint is especially prone to peeling. I recommend to never consider a Hyundai or Kia vehicle. I never will again. It's low quality garbage wrapped in an appealing package with good marketing.
