Great commuter car, but read this first...

Prologue: this is a bit long, but has a lot of insight into our 2015 Sonata Hybrid, I promise. This is our second Sonata, and we're on our second Santa Fe. Let me start by saying I'm a car enthusiast. I'm also an engineer, and can tell where the quality was added or removed. That being said, overall, I think this is an excellent commuter car and good for long vacation drives with the family. It's by no means very entertaining to drive, though. Cons first: Engine: I've also witnessed the good two seconds or so lag between my smashing the gas pedal to get 100% "go" mode and when the car finally wakes up it's lazy electric hybrid slumber and becomes motivated. [Insert brown stain joke here.] NOTE: by turning off the Hybrid system (the bottom button on the right side of the steering wheel), you will get immediate use of all the torque in the electric motor. So, you can correct this acceleration issue. But, there's also a braking problem (more than one actually), too. When you smash the brake pedal for 100% stop mode, you get a full second of lazy hybrid regen braking before the system goes "Oh, is this a panic stop?". At which point, you get a brief 100% brake lockup (haven't seen those since the 90's), and THEN the anti-lock brakes kick in. [Insert second brown stain joke]. This is just inexcusable. Note to Hyundai: if the computer registers 100% gas pedal, or 100% brake pedal, override all gas mileage software and either stop or go immediately. (Simultaneous brake and gas application should yield to the brakes, so no runaway Prius events occur). Also related to the brakes... In normal mode, I like the brakes. They slow better than those on my Santa Fe. BUT, it's really hard to slowly roll the car in/out of your garage, or out of a parking spot, at a nice 2 MPH or so. The brakes just don't want to let you roll under 5MPH or so. Expect a lot of fast stops at lights and stop signs at the end of your rolls, too. Steering: Hyundai electric steering needs work. Yes, you can steer with one finger (if you like that), but both this and my Santa Fe have an issue both staying in a straight line down even the smoothest of roads and when (sloooowly) returning to center after a turn. No "hands slipping" on the wheel after the turn to have it all re-center. You need to very directly unwind the wheel. Using "sport" mode exasperates the issue -- now it drifts and then quickly darts when I turn the wheel a smidge. And the return to center issue isn't resolved. Cruise control: what century is this? Hyundai cruise control, to put it bluntly, sucks. On GENTLY rolling (undulating) roads, set the cruise for say 45 MPH. The car will slow to 40-41, then quickly accelerate to 48. Then the next hill arrives and the process repeats. Constant 7-8 MPH speed changes to make everyone seasick. My 2005 Nissan Quest minivan was able to keep a tighter range. Hyundai: check out the 2016 Malibu. I don't care about the vacuum and other sensors needed for cruise. I want to set the SPEED (in MPH here in the US). On the Malibu, you hit the cruise 'set' button and the speed is displayed in the little center LCD screen. And darn if it doesn't move more than 1 MPH below on those same rolling hills. I rarely saw it overshoot the set speed at all when going down the hills. (I rented the Malibu for a month after Santa Fe #1 was totaled.) Spare tire: none. And finally, the suspension. Hit a small depression in an asphalt back-road at even 35 MPH and you'll bottom out the car. Sometimes this will even cause the cruise control to shut down after the suspension bumps up against the stops. I know there is a few hundred pounds of battery under the rear seats, but it doesn't take much shifting to bottom out the vehicle, really. Now, here's the crazy thing: overall, I like the car.... for commuting and long open highways. I'm not looking for excitement during my commute (it's nice, but one can't do much in traffic). My commute is probably the worst possible for gas mileage: 3 minute stop light, then everyone gets back up to 55 MPH just as we hit the next stop light. Repeat for an hour. With this scenario, I am still getting between 33 and 34 MPG. That's 10 MPG better than my previous non-hybrid returned on the same route. For pure open highway road trips we see ~37 MPG. Some people may point out a few vehicles with better mileage, but the Sonata is a decent size (mid-size) car. There's much more space in it than a Prius or VW. The trunk does shrink a bit due to the batteries, but we can still fit three large suitcases, two dozen water bottles, and squishy luggage in the trunk during road trips. Back seat is plenty roomy for two teens. The seats are comfortable, the car is very quiet (even with the gas motor running), and reliability for us has been very high (high, but not perfect) for Hyundai's since 2011. As for pricing, buy a gently used Hyundai or one with rebates for the best deal. End of my $0.02.

Daytona Beach to New York City

We purchased our Sonata Hybrid last year around this time in Fall. We made a few local trips in Florida with some impressive gas mileage but nothing like what I just experienced... I should first start by saying we sold our Mercedes Benz to get into something fuel efficient. So, in city driving under conditions in Florida we get about 33-35 mpg. Highway we get about 38. Here is the amazing! We left 2 days ago from Port Orange, Florida just below Daytona Beach and drove to New York City.... We filled the tank one time in North Carolina and spent less then $48.00 dollars total in gas start to finish. I averaged 42 mpg. My wife couldn't believe it... I gave her the gas receipts and said, "you do the math". This car has full leather, duel sun roof/moon roof, blue tooth, navigation, and more.... 10 year drive train, lifetime hybrid battery warranty... I did my research before I bought this car over a Toyota Prius... All my research just paid off! You gotta consider this car when looking for your next purchase. T. Seger / Port Orange, Florida

I just bought this car three weeks ago. It's a very refined ride, very quiet, nice interior with a dash I prefer to the newest Sonata. Seats are really comfortable and adjustable, although the front passenger seat is too low and doesn't have electric controls. Infinity sound is fantastic, navigation is far superior to Toyota (husband has a Prius) panoramic roof is luxurious, trunk space is adequate but not great due to the battery placement. I applaud Hyundai so much for integrating a regular 6sp auto transmission and not a dreadful CVT. This car drives smoothly and quietly. Took a 10-hour drive a few days ago and was able to achieve nearly 47 mpg highway in Eco mode. I'm at 39 city in Eco mode. I didn't buy this car in Eco mode. I was initially getting 26.2 mpg in town, and was not happy. I'm happy now with the mileage. My one and only complaint with this car is that the handling is not good. Steering wheel is pretty and nicely appointed, but doesn't seem particularly connected to the drivetrain. I'm overlooking this, though, as I think it's a fantastic car overall and will last a very long time. Plus, it's quite pretty.

This is a beautiful car. It gets great mileage, has a very comfortable ride and we got a very good deal on it. It is our 3rd Sonata and we have been very happy with Hyundai. I would like to give this car five stars but two times in less than 3000 miles it has stalled on acceleration. When we had our first dealer service I reported this but, of course, the mechanic could not duplicate the problem. Both times it has happened was when I was turning left across oncoming traffic with plenty of room if I accelerated. If I had been driving an old car I would have said it flooded out, which of course I know doesn't happen now. After pumping the gas pedal several times it finally got going but not without the oncoming cars honking and the drivers making rude gestures. I would guess the problem to be the electronics responsible for transferring power from the batteries to the gas engine.

This is my third sonata, my first hybrid. The gas mileage on average is 19 to 22, the electronics reset randomly. The cruise control has a mind of its own and when set at 45 mph I have had it accelerate on its own to above 70 mph. I couldn't be more dissatisfied. I have had zero response from Hyundai. They just transfer me to the dealership which hasn't produced any results.

I don't usually buy new cars, preferring 1-2 year old vehicles but this car was offered at a great price. So far, I am very impressed. The advertised combination city/hwy mileage is 6.3 l/100 km. My first tank was 6.1 and the second was 5.9. The car is great to drive, nice fit/finish, no issues with the cruise on hills as noted in some reviews. I can highly recommend this vehicle. Note I had to give a reliability score but it is too soon to rate. ***** UPDATE: After a little over a year and 30,000 kms I have to say this vehicle continues to impress me. I spend a fair bit of time in my vehicle and I look forward to getting in the car. The mileage is consistently 6.3/6.4 litres per 100 km, which is great. ****** UPDATE: Over 40,000 kms on the car now. The mileage has stayed consistently good, although I do notice much better performance in the non-winter months. Nothing suprising in the maintenance, car has been great so far. I still love driving it.

Hubby picked this car out for me. He chose the baby blue paint, and it is truly very attractive. I travel constantly, and it has over 15000 miles after just shy of four months. I love the fuel economy, and that it will stay on electric mode even at 74 mph at times. We figured out that when I travel to south Florida, it should only take roughly 1 1/2 tanks of gas. (and that is all it took) The brakes are the only issue. Be careful until you are comfortable and familiar with them. They are very grabby. I use a very light touch to stop, apparently, this issue has been corrected in the 2016 model. My children are all near or over 6ft tall, and they fit comfortably in the back. This car is wonderful! I absolutely love it. Try one on for size. UPDATE: Still love the car. I was afraid of the sport transmission at first, but had to use it due to bad tires and a late snow. This baby took me up a mountain covered with ice and snow without an issue. Can hardly wait to play in the snow this year! I do not get the best mileage with the air on in summer, but it never goes below 37 MPG. So I guess I truly cannot complain. The only issue is that people need to understand that the Electric motor will kick in until your arrow gets over the blue line on the Eco dial. If you live in a mountainous area, you will average around 34-37 MPG while traveling even on the highway. But I don't complain, because my old Subaru was only getting 25 or so. The ride is still comfy, and we still love the car. Another thing to know about the 2015 is that it is very low to the ground. Be careful while you travel on raised and uneven surfaces. Go slowly over speed bumps! That is truly my only real complaint about this automobile. It is too low. It is great for city/highway travel. But not over country roads that may become uneven.

First off.... this is far from a perfect 10 hybrid - but there is a pretty good upswing. I have owned mine about two weeks and have some notes on what I have seen so far. First off - I practically stole this from the dealership - due to the design change for next year they are dying to get these off their lots - to a tune of nearly 14k in discounts they threw my way (5k competitor cash and 9k off MSRP). I do a heavy mix of both highway and local roads - and have averaged 42 MPG so far - well better than anticipated. The handling and grippiness of the tires are terrible, but is no different than any other hybrid on the road, the standard feature list on this car far surpasses any "base" model at any other carmaker. Also - a lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery is a nice piece of mind to keep in the back pocket if you intend to drive this to it's death. The seats are comfortable (though the passenger seat is a bit low), and I find it utterly tacky that they do not include rear seat AC vents as a standard feature. I LOVE having a six speed tiptronic as opposed to the CVT, especially when accelerating hard. The styling is nice (minus the front end with the huge piece of black plastic across the front), but I can look the other way on that. I also wish the TPMS system would read out pressures on the dash screen - a feature most major carmakers are moving towards. Overall this is a nice vehicle if you get it for the right price. If I paid 2k more, I would likely have a little remorse on this purchase... but all in all - it is a solid 8/10.

There is a reason why the hybrid cost the same to buy as a non- hybrid would have been. I had expected the get mileage in the low 40s or high 30s but we have never had a tank full over 32 mpg. I have read a lot of complaints about braking drive-ability but haven't found any but poor mileage instead. As an engineer, I appreciate the difficulty of smoothly integrating electric and mechanical braking and apparently Hyundai has not solved the problem. They seem to have avoided problems by mostly disabling regenerative braking by keeping the battery mostly charged at high speeds so the regenerative breaking is limited by the lack of available energy storage capacity. The result is a system that minimizes law suits and warranty battery replacements. Great for Hyundai to meet government hybrid requirements but I feel used and unlikely to buy another Hyundai - certainly not another hybrid until I am sure they have solved the engineering problems.

As other reviews have stated this car is downright dangerous. when the gas pedal is depressed to any degree the car does nothing for a few seconds. God forbid you need to merge quickly onto the highway or accelerate out of a tight spot because this dog wont do it. My mazda 9 feels like a Ferrari compared to this car. Brakes are prone to grabbing at slow speeds and my gas miliage is below estimates.

after reading other reviews i started laughing , yes the car has a delay when you suddenly demand fully acceleration ( so does every turbo car in the world ) LOL GET USED TO IT LIKE EVERY ONE ELSE , THE SHORT STORY AFTER OWNING THE CAR FOR OVER A YEAR , " I LOVE MY CAR ! PERIOD , I set the cruse at 62 mph and got 52.7 mpg in a 200 mile hwy test , the average mpg is 30-35 , pretty great for a large car that rides and feels as secure as a car can be ....it is not a hot rod but it holds the road great , so far no problems at all so far at 30k miles , on a side note its a base model and we got $7500 off the sticker , so I'm am NOT complaining about spending $33.000 like some other idiots we paid $20500 for a brand new car , if you have 33k to spend go buy a bmw or something that does go when you demand a rapid throttle response , any way i have NOTHING AT ALL BAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS CAR , if you buy a used one for 15k you are not stupid , p.s. get a extended warranty . I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT HYUNDAI DOES IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS

I wanted a vehicle for commuting that was economical, but roomy and comfortable. For the past 20 years I have used luxury vehicles for commuting, mainly because they were provided by my employer. These included 2 BMW 5-Series, a C-Class Mercedes and the last one which I still own, a Mercedes ML 320 CDI SUV. The company stopped providing cars and I bought the ML off lease and used it for several years as a commuter. Being a diesel it did ok for a big SUV MPG-wise at about 21 MPG. At about 100,000 miles I needed a newer vehicle so I did some research and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid seemed price right compared to hybrid competitors from Toyota, Honda and Nissan and compared to the diesels available. I went for the base car with cloth seats. I must say, I really prefer leather seating, but the "Limited" model was substantially more expensive although it did have a larger display, sunroof etc, that the base model did not have. Not having power seats was also a bit of a bummer, as I was used to the feature. However, the price was really right. After nearly 4 years of owning and commuting with it, I have been satisfied. Absolutely no problems after 45K miles. Service is very inexpensive at the dealer, being used to luxury cars where even minor services cost close to a grand. Beyond the comfort issues of the base model, the only issue I have is behavior under hard braking which is different than with non-hybrids, on the other hand, at 45K miles, the brake pads are at more than 50%. This hybrid is also more reliant on the gasoline engine than I would like. I guess they do this to extend the life of the battery which has a 10 year warranty. Also, I get between 32 and 34 MPG, not really great for a hybrid, but it uses regular gasoline so my fuel costs are about half of what they were with the Mercedes diesel for my commute of about 26 miles mixed city and extra-urban. While the tiny display, the lack of power seats. leather seats and no sunroof etc. are a downside, the extra 5-6K for the limited does not seem cost effective. And, the standard model is just as trouble free. UPDATE: After a few more years of ownership, the car continues to be troublefree and comfortable but, I think I should have paid the extra for the more deluxe model with the bigger display, power seats etc.

Hyundais don’t hold value and lack quality

Hyundai doesn’t want to accept this car’s hybrid system has serious problems. At 72,000, ours had a hybrid system warning. It jerks on the highway and slows down. The transmission was replaced. Then 3 months later it happens again Hybrid system warning. We took it to two different Hyundai dealers and no warning showed up. So one day it happens again, jerking on the highway and no acceleration. We towed it to another Hyundai dealership and they found a brake switch went bad. Ok repaired by Hyundai after I bothered them about it. About a year later, hybrid system warning again, jerking on the highway, slows down to a dangerous speed. We were told it needed another new transmission. Hyundai paid for the rebuild transmission but we were out for the labor. I’d rather have a quality vehicle so Hyundai is forever off my list. They don’t have the Quality like Honda and Toyota. I personally believe Hyundai slapped this together just to compete with them. It didn’t work.

Unsafe when accelerating, low MPG, brakes shudder

When I step down somewhat forcefully - but not necessarily to the floor - on the gas pedal, there is 1-2+ second hesitation or delay in acceleration or power, or what I call a “dead spot,” before there is any noticeable pickup. Basically, this Hybrid just “coasts” at its current speed for these 1-2+ seconds before any noticeable pickup is felt. Very dangerous situation, if you ask me. This occurs every time and it doesn’t matter if it’s from a dead stop or if I’m traveling at 10, 20, 30, 40, etc. MPH & depress the accelerator pedal - either somewhat forcefully or to the floor – the car just coasts at its current speed for about 1-2+ seconds before any noticeable acceleration is felt. I find this to be a VERY DANGEROUS and UNSAFE situation, especially when trying to get out of a tight spot in traffic, merge into fast moving traffic on the Thruway, pass someone, etc. It appears that the onboard computers are trying to figure out what do to before the engine and/or motor kicks in. Also, when braking normally, car “shudders” at times; brakes lock up or grab suddenly or don’t grab enough. Additionally, at other times, when brake pedal is NOT even depressed, there’s a feeling the car is slowing down and/or there’s a thumping sound. Very strange happenings on this Hybrid for I never had it on my non-hybrid 2008 Sonata. : Another major problem with this Hybrid is the shortfall in Hyundai’s advertised gas mileage numbers, which was another big reason I bought this car. This 2015 Sonata Hybrid Limited was advertised to give me and others 36 MPG City/40 MPG Highway/37 MPG Combined. I won’t go into trying to parse the City or Highway MPG but I should by now, on my 6th tank of gas, get at least the 37 MPG Combined value. However, my average for 12,569 miles (5/28/15--12/31/17) was only 30 MPG or 7 MPG LESS (or 18%) then Hyundai advertised I would get. Hyundai got fined/penalized for over $750 million a few years ago for overstating their MPG estimates, Hyundai didn’t either care, learn their lessons or made so much in profits that the $750 million was just a “cost of doing business.” For shame, Hyundai. You let me down...and let down many others down too. This will be my last Hyundai. I just hope I survive and not get killed when I try to get out of a tight spot. BB

I should start by saying I had a 2013 Sonata Hybrid Limited that had serious acceleration hesitation problems, and I was nearly killed twice on our Southern California Freeways. As many others have complained (and Hyundai couldn't care less) these Hybrids are dangerous to be driving. After I wouldn't drive it anymore, and sent Hyundai corporate my rental car bills they finally and I mean it was like pulling teeth to get them to examine the car and agree to replace it. So now I have had the 2015 Limited for about 9 months, and it is much better than the 2013 especially with the hesitation malfunction. I am now convinced that Hyundai redesigned the transmission linkage to the driveshaft because believe it or not 2015 drivers, this model year is much better than before. The mileage is still a marketing hoax - I get about 35mpg overall. But here is the biggest reason of all to avoid this car...the jaw dropping depreciation!! This car is only worth $19,000 at carmax, and a Hyundai dealer! It cost $33,000 9 months ago. Even my additional Gap coverage with my auto insurance company will not cover a total loss (and that is 25% over the vehicles cash value!) I was switching my Auto Insurance this month from Mercury and the new Agent at AAA said we do not offer Gap Coverage, and on your car --- you will need it. In fact he said I cannot ethically recommend that you switch your auto insurance because of the massive depreciation in the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. So I guess that about sums it up...even with over $10,000 in electric rebates in California I STILL cannot get out of the Sonata Hybrid even with over $5,000 down! Obviously no car is an investment (unless its a 2005 Accord lol) but c'mon even Hyundai Dealers won't touch a used Sonata Hybrid trade-on because they know first hand it collect dust on thier lot for months before it gets shipped off to auction.

Almost 60,000 miles now. Mty wife drives this now, mostly in town and averages about 35 mpg. Only complaints, the navigation programming is poor and the indicated MPG is usually one or two MPG better than actual. Otherwise, great car, especially in heavy rain. The added weight of the electric motor and battery makes this thing track like a tank. Great car overall. I expect we'll drive it for years to come.

Low Seats - Hard to get out and get out

My initial impression of this car. 1. The miles that were promised did not reach upto my expectation, but slowly after 3 months I started seeing the benefits of it. 2. The seats are too low as the body is also very low. I myself when getting out or getting in you have to struggle. My elderly parents had a difficult time getting out with the height of the car. I still struggle when I drive or when I sit as a passenger. Otherwise, so far it is good. I am going to take it for a long drive of 1000 miles labor day weekend to South Dakota, and I am going to see how it is going to do as well as what is the mileage it is going to give on highway. Other than the one main thing I described here, I feel everything is good.

Got this car in 2018 with 64,000 miles.. it drove fine for the first year and then I got the first hybrid battery damage warning ⚠️!! Told me to pull over or slow down so I did I had it towed to the shop were they told me I needed a new car battery not the hybrid battery and everything else was good .. about six months later I’m driving again same thing happens this time I get it towed to the dealership they tell me nothing is wrong no codes came up.. so I think to myself Ok.. two months later same thing happens and dealership tells me nothing came up when they ran it for fault codes checked it all over .. it has happened four more times and each time they tell me the same thing. Great car drives good great gas mileage but very very unreliable I had to stop on the freeway twice and that’s very dangerous I would not advise us to get this car.. however if you really want one go with the nonhybrid Version..

Death trap

My 2015 sonata hybrid battery shuts down power to vehicle. If you are lucky and you have enough momentum you can pull over to a semi safe spot. This issue started 3 years with multiple fixes , temporarily working only for check engine light and warning light and message to pull over. Hyundai canada customer service is a joke. They penalize dealerships for bad reviews but it does not seem to affect themselves. They DO NOT CARE. I have an unsafe vehicle which they are aware of which they are doing nothing. My vehicle last stopped on highway 3 weeks ago. Brought into dealership. This is warranty issue handled by high tech division they are to review then send an attempted "fix". No communication back to dealership. On top of car being a death trap, have to drive defensively cant drive in centre lane, the electrical system wiped out my bluetooth/radio/ media/ satalite radio and does not work. If i could give hyundai service a negative rating i would but unfortuneatly can only give a 1star minimum.

Too many mechanical issues troughout the life of the car,but most were repaired through warranty till 60k. Car is heavier or at least feels heavier than normal mid size sedans. Poor traction due to preloaded struts. Feels too rough with all the weight on the suspention. Poor performance on potholes and uneven pavement. Steering too slow. Takes extra effort with steering wheel to get it to respond. Electric breakes were noisy and sluggish since day one. First major repair was a break booster at 75k miles. Cost with dealer about $3000. As soon as that was fixed new problem. Car just died while driving Warning light: • No “EV Ready” mode or “Ready” light blinks on and off • Check Engine light on • Charging warning light on • “Wrench” symbol (Service Indicator) blinks on and off Drivability symptoms: • Vehicle will not move from a stop or gasoline engine will not turn on. • Warning in the instrument cluster display: “Hybrid System Warning! Safely stop and Do Not Drive” and/or alarm sound. Had to be towed to shop and diagnosed with code P1B77 again not covered by powertrain warranty. Repair cost about $1000. Also very hard to find anyone who knows how to fix them, even dealer mechanics are clueless. Do not buy this car used. Only good till 60k miles while on warranty.

Bought Frank new and have been very pleased with the economy of this great driving sedan. Good power, nice that it will cruise just over 70 mph with the electric motor. Over 85k miles and no issues - just factory recommended services, oil changes and a set of tires after 70k. The full sun roof is nice when touring with out of town back seat visitors so they have a great view. I enjoy the full sound of the entertainment system as I do a lot of highway miles. There is some road noise.

Grateful for warranty - New engine AND battery

I purchased my 2015 Limited Sonata Hybrid with 58,000 miles. Grateful Hyundai has a generous warranty. Within the first month, I knew something was terribly wrong. I took it to my local dealer who was a strong advocate on my behalf. Bottom line, within the first two months both the hybrid battery and engine was replaced! Grateful I bought it under warranty because both big ticket items were covered. However, if I had purchased it out of warranty the repairs would have cost approximately $18,000 according to the dealership! The mileage is OK but not great for a hybrid. The repairs are just too expensive. I can’t believe a car with less than 60,000 had a bad battery and engine! Strangely enough, I like the look of the car and really enjoy driving it now. I will drive this until the next big issue comes up. I just don’t trust it overall. I am grateful to the dealership and glad Hyundai did the right thing in the end by covering the repairs. The battery went bad at 61,000k and they still replaced it!

My I Have Another One Please?

This vehicle has exceeded our expectations. We are so pleased this model I have no idea how it so seamlessly transitions between the gas engine and the electric motor. We cannot have a plug in model because we live in an apartment building and cannot have a dedicated parking space with a charging station. With the Sonata Hybrid we don't need one and feel like we are doing our part to combat Global Warming. The car is excellent, comfortable, dependable, reliable. Any service required is handled expertly by the Hyundai dealership service department. The car just goes and goes regardless of the weather, hasn't let us down yet. Gets great gas mileage, we went from filling up every week to every other week or better! Heated seats, mirrors and rear defroster that does it job quickly. We are definitely going to get another one after were done with this one. Which will be after our present one is paid off. I think we are going to have one built for us this next go- a-round so we can get all the features and color we want. We've bought 8 Hyundai Sonata's because of their passenger room, great looks, dependability and the all important warranty. We've also bought them from the same dealership because they are fair and honest and have always honored their promises. I'm not an easy customer, my family owned a car dealership so I know the game. I read the entire sales agreement/contract. I ask questions if something is not clear to me, I ask for it in writing. I haggle over the price on the new car and the trade in's value. I test drive the car I am going to buy, not a demo. I ask how things work in the car and require a demonstration of how something works if it is not clear via the explanation by the sales representative. And I have brought a new car back if I wasn't satisfied with the vehicle. Never had to return a Sonata.

I love this car as we have owned it since September 2014. It has all the makings of a luxury car. Love the panoramic sunroof. Car rides and drive is more than I expected and it is a very stylish vehicle. Two negatives are, passenger front seat sits too low. Although it is a limited there is no power seat and because of how low the passenger seats sits I wonder what would happen to the passenger if the air bag deflated, also says approximately 40 mpg hwy. Have never achieved that yet after 24,000 miles. Fuel gauge on dash is inaccurate when you check your mileage manually. Checking miles manually always comes out less mpg than gauge. It is a very hard vehicle to get the tank completely full as when the pump clicks off I have put in up to $2.00 more by patiently still pumping after each click.

Almost Met Expectations/No Resale Value

I’m not concerned about resale. I bought extended zurich 125,000 bumper to bumper and will drive it stress-free for years. I increased tire pressure to 38 and average 37 mpg around Pittsburgh. I bought compact spare tire from Hyundai dealer on line for $75. I have not experienced stalls, hesitation, or braking concerns. If you are looking for hybrid investment with high resale, buy an Camry hybrid. There won't be any dealing, and warranty is limited. If you share my "drive it until it dies mantra", buy the Sonata hybrid. I bought mine new and had $6000 taken of sticker. I'm satisfied. Gas mileage gas decreased slightly to 36 mpg. Some of my front seat passengers complain that seat is lower than drivers seat. If you need storage for sets of golf clubs and/or suitcases, the trunk is very small. I’m still somewhat satisfied. If you want new car every few years, don’t buy this. Resale is very poor; however, if you drive a car into the ground, it’s still a fair investment. No mechanical issues, just a few recalls. Cold weather impacts mpg and don’t believe EPA mpg projections. If you want comparable vehicle, buy an Altima. Similar mileage, very large trunk, negotiable price, but once again, poor resale. When outside temps warm up, mpgs improve. Trunk size and resale value still suck. Drive it until it explodes, or you will lose money.

I loved this car once...... I am the second owner and nothing is covered. My hybrid system failed and I developed an engine knock. I was told nothing was covered and that it would be several thousand dollars to repair. I am still making payments. If you have no issues then it's a fantastic car, but if you are a second owner and drive alot beware....... This is not the car for you!

We are a Toyota family - 3 Camrys and a Prius. When shopping to replace the Prius we wanted a larger car as we are all 6' plus. When first just looking at the numbers for 2015 cars, we thought the Sonata was a competitor to the Avalon. I had intended to buy an Avalon Hybrid. When we test drove the Avalon and Camry we couldn't believe how small they were compared to our 2007 and 2008 Camrys. The Sonata has as much room in most aspects as the Avalon and I love the extra legroom. I don't know why all manufacturers don't do this. Having just replaced the Prius battery at $4,200, the Sonata lifetime warranty was a real plus. We will not replace the Camry Hybrid battery when it comes up - we will sell and get another Sonata. We were so impressed with the Sonata we even wrote to the USA marketing team suggesting they were missing out by not advertising the roominess of the vehicle. Anyway, we don't drive a lot, but have a couple of trips coming this fall so we will see how things turn out mpg wise. I have to say so far we are disappointed as on our first tank we are only averaging 28 mpg which we hope is an aberration. Did anyone else see a break in time for their mpg - ie does it start low and get higher over time? Something to think about.

I bought it used from a friend. He had no real problems with it for 198K miles. Some serious problems are beginning to come up, but after 198K miles, he was happy. I've been happy for 1K miles. If I baby it, I get 50 mpg. I get 60 mpg on 2011 Prius when I baby it. Roomy and comfy. Don't get it, if you want a sports sedan.
