Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2011
I purchased one of the first 2011 models in July 2011. I am VERY satisfied with the car in general including the fuel economy. I recently made a 1,000 mile trip driving 68 mph and averaged 40.2 mpg. Around town I average 37 to 38 mpg. I drive to maximize the fuel economy by accelerating mildly from stops. The only negative is the seat comfort. The seats are hard and the passenger seat sits too low. Seat comfort is very important; so important that Hyundai must improve before I will consider another one. The 2012 models have a lifetime warranty on the drive-train; whereas, the 2011 models have a 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty. Hyundai should retroactively upgrade 2011's.
The first Service corrected issues with shifting
I got my Sonata hybrid in May and was very happy with it. The hesitancy in shifting between electric and gas motor at low speeds did not bother me. I did not appreciate any difficulty with the brakes, which worked well in a couple of emergensy stopping situationa. My mileage was in the 40+ mpG range. I had the first service about a month ago, Hyundai updated the computer hardware and software for free. After the service there was absolutely no hesitancy in shifitng and the MPG increases to 43-48 MPG. I remain very satisfied with this car and feel that it has gotten better.

Love my premium Sonata Hybrid
I purchased one of the first to sell in Massachusetts, and it has been better than expected. Styling, handling, gas mileage, navigation, roominess, quiet cabin, great value - it has it all. I'm getting around 38 mpg, and I haven't driven on the highway as much as I usually do, where I have seen it get 40 mpg.
Still sparking along til transmission died
First generation lithium battery hybrid has performed very well in over 95,000 miles. No mechanical or body problems and very good mileage. Car looks brand new after 5 years of use. Over the next 15,00 miles the transmission decided to malfunction just beyond the warranty period...

This car almost killed me.
RUN as fast as you can away from Hyundai's Sonata 2011. I wrote a prior review "HybridRocks" after my first year of ownership. Last week I was traveling 75mph in the fast lane on the NJ turnpike and the car shut down--all electrical and the accelerator lost all ability to give power. Fortunately I was able to get to the side of the road and get towed. I had always had the car serviced and reg oil changes. It was towed and needed 3500 in repairs and I decided to junk it at 125k b/c it wasn't worth it. Dealer said they couldn't tell me if the engine still worked and if so that could have been 9K more. I had 125K on it. Never ever performed close to highway advertised mileage. Poor handling over time--it just got worse and worse. Constantly in the shop for engine light going off. But this was a cracked radiator, two broken belts, and who knows what all else. I'm just glad to be alive. I now know about two major class actions against Hyundai..lying about gas mileage and 2011 Sonata engine (except for the hybrid). Gas engine owners got money back but not hybrids. I will never own another gas engine car again and never EVER a Hyundai. They only care about profit not their customers' lives.
