Love my Kona!
After 12 Hondas (9 Honda/3 Acura) vehicles over the last 35 years, my defective CR-V was the last one. Never ever thought I would even look at Hyundai, let alone buy one. Until I saw the Kona and realized that Hyundai has come a long way in terms of quality and reliability. I traded it in for the 2020 Kona Limited, which was $12,000 cheaper and better quality. The Kona isn't perfect, but what vehicle is? I absolutely love the look of the Kona, inside and out. It is quick and handles well. The 7 speed dual-clutch transmission is one of the few downsides. At slow speeds, it's indecisive and not very smooth. I've been using manual mode until I get up to speed and that seems to help. Once you get going, the 185hp turbo engine is a blast. Especially if you select 'sport mode'. And, compared to other cars I've driven, it's not as smooth of a ride. Might be the factory tires, but it could be better. The limited has all of the latest gadgets and systems you find in more expensive cars, like Apple Car Play/ Android Auto, Lane Keep Assist, heated seats and mirrors, moonroof, and my favorite- Blue Link, which lets you start the car from your phone, anywhere there is cell phone service. I get 26-28 mpg, which is slightly better than I got with the CR-V. It has all-wheel drive and with snow tires is great in the snow. I can't remember any vehicle I owned that I liked more than this one. My next car will likely be another Kona. Hopefully, they'll work on the transmission and ride quality in the coming years and end up with a 5-star vehicle.

Head Out On The Highway - Looking For Adventure!
The Kona is the definition of "bang for the buck" and provides all of the necessary technology, comfort and styling one could ask for, at a VERY reasonable price. What stands out to me is the "fit & finish" - everything is solid, tight and you can tell the car was assembled with care. I've seen other cars where it looks like the car was put together during a rush to get to lunch or it was the end of the day, time to go home, etc. - NOT this car. When you experience the drive, you'll notice that the shifter has a "lock-step" feel (confidence) and there is a plethora of information available to you as far as the car's operation and various settings. Comfort is wonderful, plenty of acceleration (turbo AWD), sound system is sweet (in limited edition or higher), etc. I couldn't be happier with this acquisition; run, don't walk to your nearest Hyundai dealer and grab one. The ONLY downside (as of this review) is that the color choices are in limited supply and you may have to settle for what the dealer has in stock or wait quite a while for your color to be ordered and delivered. Take this car for a test drive and you'll see for yourself. One other thing, some of the higher end models such as the limited & ultimate DO NOT come with a spare tire, only a "mobility kit" but does come with a free 5-year roadside assistance package to get help if you get a flat. You can do what I did and get a more powerful portable air pump (check out Harbor Freight) and a tire repair kit (about $ 10.00) via Amazon. If you're handy, you can repair the tire on the spot which will hold you until you can get to a tire shop OR just call and wait for Hyundai's roadside assistance (or your own if you have AAA, etc.). Enjoy your ride!

Pleased as punch
Having purchased my Kona new, I researched it for months comparing it with others. After more than 4 years I still remain very pleased in its overall performance, not one incident! I service it at the dealer and so far it's perfect. Each visit to the dealer, service advisors tell me they can't believe the car's condition and want me to trade giving me top dollar but I decline. I really love my Kona and I see many great looking competitors but the more I see and the more I'm complimented on it, the better it looks and the more I'm determined to keep it....it's a great SUV and it makes me a proud owner!!

Great Car, Great Value
I did a lot of research on cars in this subcompact SUV category because I wanted to balance fuel economy, reliability, practicality, and design. I decided on the front-wheel-drive Kona SEL trim and I have been very happy with my decision so far (1,100 miles in). Fuel Economy: Depends on trim, but the SEL is rated at 27 City/33 Hwy. These numbers are pretty accurate. The best MPG I have gotten has been 40 MPG on a 25-mile drive with a speed limit of around 55 mph, and my overall average is around 32 MPG (mostly highway driving). That isn't class-leading, but it is competitive and more than good enough for me. Reliability: This is one of the best areas for the Kona when I was making my decisions because of the powertrain on the SEL and the excellent Hyundai warranty. The Hyundai warranty is excellent and keeps me from worrying about having to do too much work for a long time, and the simplicity of the powertrain makes me think I will be able to keep it running long after the warranty ends. The SEL (as well as the SE and SEL Plus) has a 2.0 liter, naturally-aspirated, 4-cylinder, port-injected, Atkinson cycle engine mated to a 6-speed "Shiftronic" automatic transmission. This engine is simple as far as engines go since it doesn't have a turbo or direct injection (both of which add complexity that leads to new potential areas for failure). I prefer the 6-speed automatic transmission over CVT transmissions since it is more of a tried and true technology. I prefer the 6-speed automatic transmission over the dual-clutch transmission because I think it is smoother, and typically cheaper to work on. Practicality: To me, practicality includes cargo space, the inclusion of a spare tire, infotainment, driving assistance technology, comfort, build quality, and basic performance. Cargo space is fairly limited with the seats up, but with the seats down, there is plenty. Also, the SEL has roof rails if needed. The FWD SEL has a temporary spare, which was more important to me than AWD since I don't see much snow or ice in Texas and won't be going off-road. The infotainment system is intuitive, responsive, compatible with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, and uses a matte screen to reduce glare. Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility are important to me because they prevent the software from feeling outdated as quickly. The lane-keep assist works well for highways, and the backup camera and blind-spot monitoring system are excellent and reliable. The seats have been comfortable for me, and the ergonomics of the whole car seem well-considered except for the hard plastic where you might rest your arm on the driver's side door (which hurts your elbow after a while). Other than that, the plastic used in the rest of the interior is nice, easy to clean, well put together, and seems durable. Lastly, the performance has been good enough to merge onto 75 MPH highways and pass people once on. Design: This is almost entirely subjective, but I figure I would include it anyway. I like the way the Kona looks, and I like to attribute that to the fact that one of the designers (Luc Donckerwolke) also designed the Lamborgini Diablo (2001), Murcielago (2002), and Gallardo (2004). On a more objective note, the front is enlarged for aesthetics, but this leaves more room in the engine bay if the car ever needs to be worked on. Those are the main reasons I chose the Kona, and so far I have loved it.

Total Package
My 2020 Kona REALLY delivers! From the updated features (inside & out), better than expected MPG, smooth ride, comfy interior & sleek body style, this vehicle is a WINNER! This vehicle is my daily driver for my 60 miles (round trip) commute, and I could not be any happier with my selection. The Kona fits 4 people comfortably, and has plenty of cargo room with the back seats down. Hyundai has knocked it out of the park with the Kona! The only recommendation I would make is: if you have the flexibility to upgrade to the 1.6 turbo engine, do so, if not, no biggie. VERY pleased with this purchase!

Love my new Kona
This car has everything I could possibly ask for and more. Not sure I will take advantage of all the technology i offers, but maybe in time. Very comfortable ride height - not too low for this older person, but not so high I have to pull myself up into it. Plenty of room without being too large for me to handle. So glad they came out with this model.

Very Happy with Kona after exploring many options
I really wanted a hybrid. I loved my Ford Cmax so much I was on my third when Ford stopped making them. So I was on the hunt for a new car with a hatch back. I looked a the Toyota Prius and Rav 4 hybrid but I felt like Cinderella, the Prius was too low to the ground and the Rav 4 was too big. I looked at the Kia Nero but there was no get up and go unless you used the sport mode which seems counterproductive in a hybrid. I gave up on the hybrids and looked for cars with 30 MPG or more. I liked the Subaru Cross-track but again, it felt too big. I test drove the Hyundai Kona and it felt just right! It had power (I got the turbo/ultimate) good looks, nice trim package, all the safety features you could want and the phone charger. It would have gotten 5 stars but what the heck, no power liftgate? and why only 30 combined mileage with such a small car I don't get it! I love the heads up display, the heated seats, the style (although I would rather all matching color on the side, my husband likes the black on the side) and it can get onto the highway as my Cmax could! I looked at a lot of cars and I feel like the Hyundai Kona is just right!

SEL plus 6 months later
Every review I've seen complains about the trans and many reviews about how the turbo engine is not smooth either. We got the SEL Plus with base engine/trans. It works smoothly and reasonably well in traffic. Never felt I was holding anyone up. Cruise held +/- 2 mph up and down hills. Returned 33 mpg at 79 mph on interstate with hills. Seats are comfortable for a wide guy like me. Much better than the Tucson, not quite as nice as Santa Fe. We have a 2020 SF Limited and had a 2017 Tucson. After 6 months, car is still pretty much like new. Runs even better after breaking in. No complaints whatsoever. Does exactly what it's supposed to. And is fun to boot. Don't exclude the lower trim levels.

So fun to drive!
I got the Ultimate with the turbo engine and heads up display. This car rocks! I couldn't believe it when I got on the freeway and punched it. So much response and so comfortable too. Handles great! Smooth ride. Perfect size for zipping around. The heads up display is awesome. It shows a little speed limit sign and your speed, as well as other information right in front of you. You can even adjust the height and location of where it displays on the screen. Blind spot and lane assist are new for me. So cool. They are on the heads up display also. The 8" display with radio, phone, NAV, backup camera and all that is really nice to use. Great sound from the radio. Love this car!!! Only negatives may be if you need more cargo space and interior material used could be nicer. For cargo space you wouldn't be buying a subcompact SUV in the first place if that was a concern. The dual clutch is weird. It sounds and feels like driving a stick (says this in the manual) but it shifts really quickly from gear to gear. And if you just step on it you would not feel it at all.

Awesome SUV!
Purchased a 2020 Ultimate AWD about 5 months ago and still in love. Have not been driving much due to COVID but have 1300 miles on it now and it has been a lot of fun. Build quality seems very good and I typically have only purchased german made cars previously. Would absolutely purchase another Kona and would highly recommend.

Updated review
Text: I purchased my 2020 Kona SE in September of 2019. It now has 20k miles and luckily we haven’t had any problems BUT I do see that my car is on the recall list via the vin#. From what I understand I won’t get any details on course of action until the end of June. Now I am afraid to drive any distance after hearing the horror stories of engines just stalling out due to lack of oil. I always check the oil now before I go anywhere, not something you should have to do with a practically new car. Not really happy with the car now, but what do you do?? Wait and see I guess, I do know that I wouldn’t recommend this car due to this situation.

This car books!
Reviews said slow acceleration. These people clearly don't know how to drive! I've been zipping all over town! I'm having to really watch how fast I'm going. I have the sport drive and haven"t needed it. It does have a lit of hard plastic inside which I like. I keep my cars 12+ years and plastic can be renewed back to new with a couple of coats of Armor All, upholstery cannot and always shows age. Sp[ll anything on plastic, wipe it up. Not so with upholstery. Lots of easy to use technology in the SEL. I still need to read the manuals but got the radio going, phone hooked up, and blue tooth working without them and this is all new to me. Love the back-up camera. I like that I can load the back with groceries and they're not going to roll out all over the place. The back also has a built in (removable) cover that is great for security. Seats fold down for large loads. Very responsive handling. Turns on a dime. Maneuvers quite well. Gas mileage on first tank was 30 mpg in city with tollways for some highway type driving. This is not a luxury car but it is comfortable and FUN to drive. .

I’m a little shocked that I love my Kona!
I bought a 2020 CPO SEL Plus. The more I drive it the more that I love it! The infinity sound system is pretty great, the safety features are a bit to get used to, and it’s more comfortable than I would have guessed. People comment on it frequently. I didn’t think it would be fun to drive, but it is. The engine could have more power, but good in this class. I went with my Kona because it is not a CVT. My last car was a CVT, and won’t do that again if I don’t have to. I would prefer a manual, but they’re stupidly hard to find anymore.... bring back the manuals!!! I would love a manual tranny Kona.

Broke at 5,000 miles!! Never again!!
update again 1/4/2021 Complete engine failure 5,237 miles. OMG are you Freakin Kidding me!!! I have been at the dealership stating my case. I never even made it to my first oil change. My car will need a new engine and will take almost 2 weeks of wait time just to receive the engine. (threw #2 engine rod). Apparently, Hyundai has issues with their 2.0 engine and in previous years recalled 1.2 million of these engines. BE Warned! this is an unreliable engine and will surely cause you problems as it ages. I STRONGLY recommend you skip this make/model. 12/10/20 - this is an update to my previous review for those of you who read it. I take back everything nice I said about the car. to refresh - 2020 Kona SE 2.0-AWD purchased brand new at 0012 miles. Car now has 4000 miles and it is now buring oil. a crazy amount of oil. approx 1 quart every 1000 miles. and to make matters worse i can hear a slight knocking or "tapping" sound from the engine until the engine warms up a bit. Once warm the sound goes away and does not come back till the next day when started cold again. This car is adult driven and has never been abused. I have had several brand new cars and I've never had an oil burner before. All new cars use a pinch of oil during a break in process. This is far above that. Otherwise, The car is flimsy and feels like the cheap junk that it is. I have contacted the dealer and they flat out told me that this can't be happening and it must be my interpretation. but facts are facts. They want me to come in for an oil change and its not due till 7500 miles. I am clearly in for a nightmare of a ride to get the dealer to work with me and to have my problem resolved. I suspect it never will be resolved and the car will never operate to satisfaction or factory specs. Either way I am no longer going to recommend this car.

Ultimate trim worth every penny.
Had the Kona just for few days but it is proving to be all we expected. Quite and speedy fun to drive. Handles well and interior quality is great. Has lots of techical features but intuitive to learn. Most all, it’s great looking. Go for the white. Gives great contrast with the black trims:-).
Engine needs to be replaced
I leased the car in June 2020, less than 10,000 miles and only 9 months old! Something in the engine area started making a rattling/knocking noise and a day or so later I noticed a lack of pick up on the highway. After making it off the highway, I pulled into a parking lot and lost all acceleration. The car would not move at all and the check engine light came on. I had it towed to the dealer who at first insisted there was nothing wrong with it as the check engine light was off and they couldn't replicate the acceleration problem. A day later they tell me Hyundai advised them to replace the engine! So, waiting on a new engine to be delivered...

Best value
Bought the 2020 Kona Limited last Dec2019. I have approximately 4500 miles on it after 2 round trips SC to Ft Myers FL. Average mpg 33 city/hwy. My trip to FL I got 37 mpg with cruise control set at 70 mph. I do use unleaded plus gas. The 1.6 turbo is quick and fun to drive. Using the sport mode can be challenging--I don't doubt it will do 0-60 in 6.9 seconds. The ride is firm and still comfortable. The heated seats are great. If you are a tech freak, this car is for you. It has Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, blue link, Sirius XM, wireless charging for your iPhone. I was also considering the Lexus UX200 but the Kona Limited has more standard features and thousands less. I think this car has a lot to offer for the money.

2020 Kona Ultimate
I bought this brand new and within the first 4200 miles had to have it "fixed" 3 times. The oil and gas mix together, it stutters(sometimes won't start), and the check engine light comes on. These are not the features I was looking for in a brand new car so I sold it back to the dealership. Not sure if I just got a bad one but buy at your own risk.
Love the Kona
I love my new Kona. It has many popular features, is rated high for safety and is very affordable. A great value for the money.

Great value and fun too
My wife bought an SEL in 2019. I liked it so much that I traded my 2017 outlander in and bought a 2020 LIMITED in LIME TWIST. The 2.0L is perfectly acceptable but I wanted more. The turbo 1.6 is pretty quick and my still new kona is already getting over 30 mpg. I love this color and it gets lots of attention. Ride and handling are great. The quality is so far above the Mitsubishi I had that it isn't in the same league. Controls and surfaces all have a quality feel to them. Seats are comfortable outward visibility is also quite good. The audio system sounds very good and is easy to use. All is not roses however. There are some downsides as well. There are lots of hard plastics inside, but they are of good quality and nicely assembled. There is a fair amount of road noise inside, but not a deal breaker. And finally as others have stated the 7 speed dual clutch transmission does stumble a bit at low speeds but it is fairly easy to adjust you're driving style to accommodate for it. Overall it is an incredible value. looks, tech, driving dynamics, quality. What more can you ask for? It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love mine and would highly recommend it to you.

Comfortable ride and good safety features
We have historically been Honda people, but this time we took a look at the Kona...and are actually happy we did. Better priced than the competition, this small SUV is perfect for grownups. We don’t have to haul too much stuff but when we had to, we put the seats down and it was easy. We love the safety features (we have the Ultimate trim line) as they give helpful warnings. Good gas mileage was essential (next we will probably go Electric) and we are getting it. My husband actually said he was surprised by how much he likes it...and even prefers it to some of the more upscale cars (Acura) we have had in the past! Fairly stiff ride, which we like.

My new 2020 Green machine
Just purchased my 1st Hyundai. Picked up Dec 14/19. 2020 Hyundai Kona Turbo. Love the 2 tone. Green & Black (green is my fav colour) I went from a larger SUV - Equinox to this. I LOVE IT. Abit lower but I will adjust. The turbo pick up is great. So comfy. Heated seats and steering wheel are a big bonus! I feel so safe. Lot's of compliments on the colour! I am a very happy brand new Hyundai owner. Thanks to my awesome salesman, now friend lol ARASH from Aurora Hyundai (Aurora, Ontario) Great staff! Highly recommend them :)

Great and affordable
I got the SE AWD . Traded a Jeep Renegade and I feel like a dodge a bullet . I am not sure I agree with bad reviews because the price and warranties is what hot me to pick it over the Nissan Kicks or the HR-V - which I also owned before . If you are like me - and don’t need the extra fancy turbo kick then the SE AWD is for you . The Sports Mode is enough for me . I am going Fast and Furious at all so . And also the Lane assist and down fill assist are standard features. Also - fun car and quiet . Make sure if you shift to neutral on the light that you Renee it . I pushed the gas and forgot cause the engine is so quiet !
Kudos for Kona

Kona The Car
The car has functioned well. Have not had to take the car back to the dealer for warranty service. The reason for only 3 stars is due the road noise I experienced. When I drive the vehicle on the express way the road noise fills the cabin of the car. I have checked the tire air pressure and the tires are at the manufacture's specs. So I'm not sure what is causing the noise. Matter fact I have to turn the radio up and still can the hum of the road.

RUBY
The Kona is adorable! With barely over 5K on the odometer what’s not to like. Actually, much to love. We have the top of the line Ultimate. Quite comfy and a hoot to drive. Couldn’t give it the full 5 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️tho. No power lift gate, ventilated front seats, memory seat, power folding mirrors, power front passenger seat, or ambient lighting. The msrp wasn’t 43k like our 2017 MKC either. That said, it’s a LOVE ❤️ BUG !!
Classy Kona!
My AWD SEL Kona in Pulse Red is strikingly beautiful contrasted with the black trim and black and herringbone fabric seats. Loaded with all the extras you might want, this car has pep, handles well, and has that wonderful new car smell. I did buy laser fit floor mats, and they've done a spectacular job keeping snow, ice, and salt from ruining the interior. Six months after buying my new Kona and I'm totally satisfied with this car!

Its cute but...
I got my Kona back in 2022. I wish I had asked more questions about the dual cutch feature and had test driven it in a residential area and not just on the highway. It's a cute car with a speed boost button which does come in handy. Unfortunately my used car came with interior damage to the seats and middle storage area...which easy to do because it is all plastic. The power steering and adjustable steering wheel settings are great and the tech features are pretty advance. I call my Kona the jerk and lurk. It definitely gets very jerky afyer coming to a stop. It can get stuck or lurk when accelerating speeds; thanks to the dual clutch system it feels like a stick shift vehicle at times. Once you get going its smooth.

Turbo boost is fun
I purchased my brand new 2020 Hyundai Limited Turbo Kona last April 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 epidemic. I desperately needed a car ASAP and no dealers were allowing test drives . So what I did before purchasing a car was check out a ton of YouTube videos on all types of “ all wheel drive “ vehicles . I finally decided that the 2020 Hyundai limited turbo Kona fit my budget . Looking back almost one year later I have been very pleased and lucky to have this car. It handles great , drives tight. The all wheel drive system got me out of a couple of tough snowy and icy upper New York State driving situations and the turbo engine ads a nice kick during needed accelerations . The sound system is very good too for this class of vehicle.

Very potent SUV
I really love my Kona even if I have the basic model . The equipment is good but not luxurious. Overall the ride is a little harsh but the cornering is very impressive , even more than the Elantra I had before. Gas consumption is ok but not great. For the reliability its very good except for the oil consumption that is above average. Luggage space is small when not folding the seats. Engine performance is ok but not great and my transmission is sometime searching for the right gear and it hesitates. The engine make a noise like a valve noise but I was told thats normal its the injection who does that. The sound system is great .I drive in the Québec winter and the AWD traction is simply amazing. The power steering is fast and precise. Braking power is excellent. Its a nimble VUS maybe because of its relatively short wheelbase.

Love My Car
Love my new Kona! So much pep in the turbo engine! Drives beautifully, love all the extras. It’s only been a couple of days, but so far it’s so much fun to drive! This is my third Hyundai and I’ve had great luck so far! Can’t beat the price for all the amenities.
