Excellent car - doubly so for the money

Owned since April 31 of this year. Just got it out of the shop at 10k miles - they dropped a new transmission in, the old one grinded shifting into second at anything over 2800rpm. Minor interior trim rattling on rough roads or when the sub is cranked. Other than that, this car is more feature-laden and fun to drive than anything out there under $16k, even taking other cars' rebates into effect. The Mazda3 is more fun, with a stronger engine and better aftermarket support, but costs $5k more than the $11,600 I paid for my GT hatch... and if I sink half of that difference into suspension, wheel/tire, and engine upgrades I'll have almost as nice a car customized to my liking. Bravo Hyundai!

I went out and intended to buy a Honda Civic, or something similar. I bought the 2004 Elantra, and I'm *very* happy with that choice. 2/3rds the cost of a similarly-equipped Civic, I have no complaints after 15k miles. It also has 130 hp, instead of the 105ish that seemed to be the standard in this size/cost class.

Drove from Massachusetts to Florida, have taken a 6 hour trip since then, and joy riding with my friends. With all of that since June the only problem I've had is the brake pads (understandable) and and windshield problem, which is being worked out now. Good car.

Best of the Best

Don't look at Honda Civic, don't look at Toyota Corolla, go directly to Hyundai, and buy an Elantra GT Hatchback. I did the research, test drove, did more research, I bought the best of the best. The car is tight as a drum, drives like a dream, smooth automatic, fully loaded costs about the same as an entry-level competitor. Leather seats, Kenwood stereo, fog lights, cute rear and front end...hatchback with rear seats down flat holds almost as much cargo as the Honda CRV I traded in. Quality is outstanding. My wife and I also own a 2000 Volvo C70 convertible...I can't decide which one I like best!

A Car You Grow to Love

I was not all that excited to be trading in my two seater sports car for the Elantra. However, I was growing out of the racer boy image and I needed something practical and good on gas. Now, I can't figure out why I had been driving anything else. This car is great. It excels at the things a "daily driver" should excel at and it still surprises me with thoughtful features designed into the vehicle that I had not known about. Can you believe it can tow over 3000lbs! I just found that out today and my jaw dropped. Awesome car.
