What's wrong with you people
This car isn't that great(actually it's junk). I want to like it, but I still wish (more now than ever) I'd bought a Honda/Toyota. The handling is quirky, but adequate. The brakes are weak (try panic stopping). The clutch is weak and touchy. The motor does make adequate power. Fuel mileage is the bottom end of mediocre. Also, plan on putting new tires on it every 10,000 miles (or less) once it gets older. The dealer has been worthless. They won't even look at the car. "It needs aligned." I just had the thing aligned 1000 miles ago (and this is the 2nd time because of tire wear).
Great Car
This Car has been the most reliable car I have ever owned in my 47 years of driving and buying cars. I have 50,000 miles on the Car and have only replaced the tires (Because I forgot to rotate them) before a trip (9,500 miles)out West in April 2006. The tires wuld have probably made it but I didn't want to take a chance. It has never required anything else. It is very quiet and looks very nice. I have no complaints whatsoever.

What more could you ask for
Hey folks want a solid car with big time features for small time bucks look no futher I was a Honda Toyota guy and my Hyundai is just as good as them.Loaded for about 13k with a roof and abs civic ex around $18k+ with less horsepower I may add. have had 38 k roll so far with no interuptions. GOING STRONG. OH YAL THE WARRANTY !! ARE YOU SERIOUS HEADLIGHT BURNED OUT THE OTHER DAY MY COST $0 I HAVE HAD IT OVER 2 YEARS! THANK YOU HYUNDAI
Unsatisfied
I keep up with my cars maintenance as I should yet I have had multiple problems and my car is only at 60,000 miles. At 30 my power steering pump blew. At 40 my driver door sensor broke. At 50 my radiator and my thermostat blew literally. Despite the readings of my coolant level. It was perfect and all of a sudden smoke was coming from my hood. I do admit that the handling is good yet I had a Toyota and didn't have my first problem until I was at 120,000. Plus the problems I have had are pretty irregular, my mechanics at the dealership even were to admit. Plus Hyundai put a lock on the oil filter so that only they are able to change your oil filter. They say its to protect me but we know why.
Great job, Hyundai
This low-priced car has an amazing array of features. It is peppy, quiet and comfortable. With 53,000 miles, I have had no expenses for repairs. The warranty and reliablility are exceptional.

excellent performance in accident
It was a cute, fun to drive little car. Gas mileage was decent. It did act up on a cold start for a while, had it to the dealer 5 times, they kept giving it back with same problem, so that's a service dept problem, not the car itself. I recently was in a head on collision on the highway. The car was totaled, but the passenger compartment stayed intact. The front end absorbed most of the force before it got to me. My most serious injury was a broken heel, so compared to what could have happened, that car did an amazing job of keeping me alive. My head/face was untouched except for a bloody nose from the airbag. I'm definitely considering another Hyundai for my next car.
Very pleased with car
I only have the car a week, so more will follow as time goes by. It was a fun expericne dealing with the dealer. (A tip of the hat to Jim & Woody.) The car with the automatic is a lot better then I thought it would be, I can't wait to get by my self imposed break in time, so I can open up the engine more. Fun to drive, I have the ABS with traction control, moon-roof, car came with spoiler, which was listed on the sticker, not a dealer add on. Check Carsdirect.com also, they had the spoiler listed to see invoice & MSRP. price, edmonds did not list it. C.D. plays well, just an enjoyable car. Will update info as I have car longer.
198,000 km and still rolling
I bought this car 4 months ago had to change the radiator, the battery and the head light now have to change the exhaust, the alternator and the spark plugs despite of this... Man I love my car! Nice plastic wood finish, engine not hard on oil and engine very peppy for a 2.0l 4 cyl. Only paid 1500$ and I knew I had to put money in it but I didn't mind cause Hyundai is a very reliable brand and that my car will last for another 198,00 km ; )
Still digging this car!
Bought my silver GT in Fall 2001 & have really enjoyed it for the past 3 years (current miles = 29K). I really like the body style (similar to a Saab 93) and for the price I got a LOT more car than I would have in a Honda, Toyota or VW. There are some ongoing & annoying defects (e.g. windshield washers are always getting clogged, gas tank door latch must be pulled several times to open, a lack of lighting in the rear seating area). But again, for the money I got a reliable, fun little car that I love and that Im sure I'll continue to enjoy driving for many years to come.
Good little car
A pretty good smaller car. It does everything asked of it. Nothing stands out as exceptional, nor is anything terrible.
It's still just a cheap car.
This car has a few things going for it: leather interior, blue dash lights, fog lamps. It seems reasonably solidly built, and the engine is powerful enough for me. However, I think the essential cheapness of the car is evident in some of the mechanical and safety components. There have been 2 safety recalls, the catalytic converter had to be replaced (warranty) and the transmission had to be reprogrammed (warranty). The transmission is still clunky, the car vibrates under braking (cheap rotors), and also at highway speeds. The steering is totally numb (think '72 Olds), so the car is no fun to drive. Headlights awful. Windshield awful in rain. Hey, it was cheap. Next time, Mazda 3.
189K and counting.
I have a great history with Hyundia. I bought a new 2002 elantra and drove it for a year. Gave it back due to a bk, to have cheaper pymts. Then bought a 2002 Sonata, returned it two days later, due to hating the big floaty ride. Got another 2002 Elantra, formal rental, with 22k. 6 yrs later 189k and counting. My friends cannot believe that I still use this car for my daily 100+ miles commute. Service history: The first year, it had service to fix a throttle sensor, no cost. Next year the battery, no cost both under warranty. At 96k changed timing belt. The only bad thing is that you have to replace the headlights every 6 months. Oil changes every 10k, tires, one set of brakes. @30mpg. Sweet.
HyundaI Elantra GT
I think it is a GREAT car. Would buy Hyundai again.
Super Safe
My daughter was driving the car when she was in a major crash. The car was totaled but she opened the door and walked away without so much as a scratch. The car was replaced with another Elantra as I don't want her driving anything else.
Good value and safety for young drivers
So far so good
Great first car.
This is my first new car and it's everything I could have asked for. I just got back from my first road trip (1200 miles round trip), the seats are comfortable, the ride smooth, enough acceleration to get around the tractor trailers and excellent gas milage(I got 35 mpg on my trip). The car is decent in the snow, not an AWD vehicle, but capable enough. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a brand new car, especially with the HUGE warranty and the huge list of standard features.
Solid Car/Great Value
Purchased the 2002 Elantra GLS manual 2 weeks ago. The car drives pretty damn good and so far it has exceeded my expectations. Overall the value of the Elantra is excellent considering the standard options, quality of ride and warranty. And when you compare this car to the compition, it's a clear winner. The 5 years TCO (total cost of ownership) on Edmunds uses the TMV (true market value) purchase price when calculating the cost per mile. I recalculated the 5 year TCO using the my purchase price and came out with .28/mile cost which is several cents below their number.Your Hyundai dealer will take invoice on the 2002 and give you back the rebate.
I LOVE THIS CAR!!
I LIKE THIS CAR MORE THAN MY 94' VW GOLF, AND THAT CAR WAS GREAT TO ME.
I love my car
It's so good, comfy and an awsome sound system, throaty valve system on the exhaust an responds well to tuning.
Economical and Reliable
We bought this car new in 2002. We test drove Toyotas and Hondas and tried Hyundai on a whim. Price not a factor, this was still our favorite of the three (Civic, Corolla and Elantra). It doesn't have much of a personality and some people sniff at the name badge, but for our money we couldn't be happier. We've replaced the tires and brakes and have 57k on the vehicle now. We get 33-36mpg highway. People complain about resale but we plan to keep this little econobox until it won't run anymore. My highest compliment for the vehicle is that we bought it while I was still in professional school and now that I've graduated Im still proud to drive it though now we could afford something more.
Highly Recomend
Almost 104,000 miles. I drive this car. If I do 55 -60 mph I can get 32mpg Everything has held up well and hyundi dealer has been great. I do not use them for service but when i need them they have been there. I compared it to civic, coralla, focus etc. I can buy a new 2005 for less then my 2002.
Worst Car EVER!!!!
I bought this car for my daughter in-law on October 31, 2009. The worst mistake ever. The salesman said this was such a good car. Had not owned it a month when check engine light came on. It needed a new head gasket, water pump, timing chain, valve cover gasket. Since all this work it developed an oil leak when it is drove on a trip, must be a high pressure leak. Hyundai dealership does not have good enough mechanics to figure it out. I will never buy another Hyundai. I will always stick with a Toyota or Honda.
Really a great car for the price
I rolled off the showroom floor with 4 miles and have had little to no problems. Initially, had some problems with the transmission mounts but Hyundai was quick to fix with no cost. Also some stereo issues. Keeps shorting out for some reason. As it gets older, the engine makes a little more noise. Exhaust sounds from the engine compartment is the most noticeable. Overall, I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. What an awesome car with excellent features. IT ALWAYS STARTS!!!!!
Won over
I bought this car at 99,000 miles to get out of a gas guzzling van. I was wary, but now I'm won over. I love this car. Good pep, good nimbleness, good gas mileage, good comfort. This small car even has leather seats and a sunroof! I looking for another Hyundai for my kid and stating to look for another used elantra in a more recent model year for me.
Three Years, Still Love It
It's been a wonderful experience so far. One small plastic failure, otherwise nothing but consumables. Still fun to drive, still feels solid. I miss the ABS and the interior noise at highway speeds is more than I'd like. The experience is good enough that my wife bought a duplicate a year later. We're both pleased with the decisions.
GT-Moonroof w/ ABS
Car rides really smooth, handles sharp, and comes with every option you could possibly want, plus looks better than any other car in its price range. If you compare this car to any other one in its class, it will win by a landslide, no contest.
90k+ miles later, I'm still rolling.
I haven't had any major problems w/this car at all. I did have a recall which they fixed no problem. Everything else has been smooth sailing just about. The only thing that is a bit of a problem is are the lights- the die a lot so you have to keep replacing them, especially the fog lights. The car is quite durable, I've been through a few dings, and no problems. During one snow storm, I ran straight slam into the highway railing very fast and very hard and just knew the car was done for b/c of the sound of the impact. Somehow the car keeps driving, I get home, check it out, only 2 scraches, not real damage. Awesome. Gas is good, I'm getting about 28-29 per gallon. Trunk space awesome.
Keeper
Bought new and haven't had a single problem to date (150K). Dealer serviced for oil changes every 3k since I got a "free oil changes as long as you own the car" when I bought it. That deal stopped when the dealer changed ownership but the dealership was great all that time. Overall extremely pleased, more so when considering the price and class of the vehicle.
Great Car at a Better Price
I couldn't be happier with my 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT. It's been trouble- free for more than 20,000 miles, it's reasonably fun to drive, and it gets great mileage, especially on the freeway. My wife complains that it is too small, but it is what it is, a compact, economical, comfortable car. Also, with the hatchback, it will haul significant amounts of cargo when necessary. I even fit a set of full- size soccer goals into the back on one occasion.
What an awesome value!!!
Awesome value, what else can I say about my 2002 Hyundai Elantra? I am a college student who was in the market for a great car at a great price and I found it. The car looks like it is worth far more then the $14,500 I paid for it - I'm often told that the front end looks like that of a BMW and rare end a Mercedes. The interor is simple yet sleek.
Carbon Blue Elantra GT
Very nice vehicle for the money. Lots of options and a great commuter car.
The best there is in small cars.
Since I purchased this vehicle, all I've had to do was to service this vehicle for normal maintenance. I just recently replaced the radiator at 142,000 miles. Other than that, it's just been tires, brakes, tuneups, etc. The car has nice pickup for its size engine and on of the coldest a/c units I've ever experienced. Last June, someone in front of me kicked up some 4x8 pieces of wood on the highway. The car took it like a champ, and although had extensive front end damage, I was easily able to pull over on the shoulder of the road, even though the car obviously had to drive over the debris. The hood took most of the impact, was repaired, and I'm back on the road at over 145,000 miles.
I Call It My PseudoSaab
First the cons... the trunk cover panel rattles slightly at low speeds and my AC fan developed a rattle after 10 months. Now the pros... Of 5 new cars I've owned, only my Honda Accord gave me less complaints in the first year. It's a true pleasure to drive. Great, responsive handling, generous driver and passenger room, solid passing power, and that gorgeous styling. I'm just sad to say that in 6k of driving, I've seen another one on the road once.
elanra review
great dollar value. adequate in every regard. Not a 10 in any category but can be rated good in most every aspect.Acceleration will not astounish you.
2002 Hyundai Elantra GT- Fun, Value
I think this car is an undiscovered value. All other 5 door Hatchbacks I look at were over $2,000 more plus no 10 year - 100,000 mile warranty! Also the list of standard equipment is impressive (leather, 4-wheel dics brakes, alloy wheels, CD, etc., keyless/alarm, etc.) Great driving around town or on the inter-state!
Elantra GT, the best in class
After trying almost all small sedan/hatchbacks for my wife decision was easy. No other one offered so much space, features, usability, power and luxury at once in that class for that money. Even as VW Passat driver I enjoy driving GT. Hope the brandname would get more recognition for the quality not only the price. Thanks Hyundai for this beauty!!!!!
7K miles of reliability
Bought the GT 8 months ago, put 7K miles on it, changed oil once. No other maintenance or any problems or rattles to report. This is the first new car I've ever bought. Did a lot of research and haven't regretted spending less money than my friends who bought Hondas and Toyotas. I'll be done with payments a year before they will be... If you want a reliable, sporty, economic, AND comfortable car consider an Elantra GT.
2002 Elantra VE
I purchased this vehicle used (lease return)with 83300kms on the clock. It has exceeded all my expectations. The only trouble I have had was the failure of the front speed sensor on the auto transmission. It would not let it shift to 3rd gear. I was able to drive at 80kph to the dealer where it was replaced. The transmission shifts beautifully. I plan on another Hyundai as my next vehicle, and I highly recommend it to anyone who asks. The only downside for me is the control for the cruise. It is not as convenient to use as the buttons on the steering wheel used by other manufacturers.
Hot Little Number
Plenty o' character in this car with the best apparent value of all I researched and tested. Hot, fun, practical, and a bit different (read: better) than your neighbor's. I'm consistently glad I chose it, and my friends are pleasantly surprised when they check it out.
Love It!!
Dropped it with some Eibach Springs and threw on some 18" wheels and my neihbor with a Lexus IS300 is jealous becuase the kids in the neighborhood think mine looks better. I get heads to turn all over town and people in parking lots are always asking me if it really is a Hyundai. Couldn't be happier.
great car
this car has been awesome!..i love the handling the features and the style. this is the best overall car i have ever owned!..little stuff bug me like the wierd wear patterns on the hubcaps..looks like painted thin plastic succecptable to wear...i need to have those replaced...paint in general seems thin on the whole car.. (easy scratch marks)...but that really is my biggest complaint..the car is a winner outside of that!!!...peppy..handles well..nice stereo and well designed..thank god i dont have to get my 6'3" frame in the backseat tho!...=)...not a ton of room back there, but enough for the average joe or jo-ette...i like this car alot, make driving fun for me again!!
do check out this car!
I researched new cars for over six months and just couldn't help feeling ripped off by all other makes after taking a closer look at Hyundai. All the features I wanted, for $3000 less than a Civic EX! (And a 10-year warranty to calm my fears about reliability...) What about resale value? What I'll get less for it in a few years is in my bank account now--collecting interest. Love the responsive ride, ergonomics, large load capacity, Euro styling. Nothing rattles, automatic transmission shifts as smooth as butter.
Cannot beat this car!!!!!!!!! 5 STAR A+
I was looking for a new car and spent time reserching makes model and prices v/s quality. I narrowed it to two makes and models. The KIA Spectra GSX and the Hyundai Elantra Hatchback GT. I drove the KIA first and did not feel well about that experience. When I sat in the Elantra GT Hatch, it was instant Love. This is a great car with Standard Leather Seats, CD, Cruise, PW, PL, and a well laid out interior. You will not find a better warranty and some dealers are offering 12/120000 mile warranties if you buy from them. Super quality and Hyundai is now ranked equal to Honda quality. I can believe it. Get em while they are cheap. And remember Read the B.O.M.
Wow...and I only paid $14,366.00!!
What can I say about this car only that Hyundai must be losing money on this one. I think they are trying hard for market share. Man...I love this car....Black and fine. In a few years I will put 16's on it and mabye lower it about 1 1/2 inches. If this thing had a turbo...I'm telling you there would be no need to even test drive anything within 10K of it's price.
Great Value
I needed cheap transportation but still like some comforts and the GT is a great bargain. My daughter loves to drive it when she is home and she has a new Beetle and loves it but talks about how much fun to drive the GT is. Personally I love the trip computer and that was what made the difference for me.
FANTASTIC!
Just returned from a 3000km round trip from Calgary to Vancouver Island. A lot of mountain driving - steep hills, lots of twists. The car handled like a sports car and was able to negotiate all but the slowest and steepest roads in 5th. Gas mileage 6.7litres/100km or 35mpg US. Drove at 60 - 75 mph where road conditions allowed. Researched this vehicle 1 year before buying. It's exceeded my wildest dreams.
Nice little package
Nice styling, excellent interior. Two gripes that I have... first, for a 140-hp engine it seems to accelerate quite poorly, especially at higher speeds. Second, for some reason, the brakes squeal the first couple of times you use them after the car has been stationary for some time, say overnight. Otherwise a very decent package for a very reasonable price.
A little trooper she is.
Six months after buying my Elantra, I was hit from behind by a semi (which pushed me into the car in front of me). Other than a pulled back, I was fine. My car, on the other hand, had to have quite a bit of work (body and two things under the hood). Over four years later, I've never had a problem with the engine -- despite her smash- up. I'm no mechanic but that record speaks to me of her reliability more so than if she'd never been in such a collision.
Not what I'd hoped
Bought vehicle on $ & Hype also liked idea of not buying used and getting someone else's problems. It worked, I got my own. 5 years 3... oops now to be 4 sets of brakes. Bumper to Bumper warranty? They looked at 1 wheel, 10 minutes say it's not covered asked 1400 to fix, refused and they charged me 85 as a diagnostic. Suggested I am hard on brakes, my last vehicle had 185,000 with only 1 set of pads. Body dings and scratches very easily, window molding is actually black tape, which peels and bubbles. Body rusting.. guess what, not covered. Can't trade in only can get 2500 market is flooded with these
