We bought our CRV new in 2005. Still running strong at 230,000. Only expenses have been fluids, brakes, tires, a battery and a starter. Treat them good and they'll return the favor. If I could buy another 2005 brand new I would do it in a heartbeat. We love this car.

My First Car

Brooke, 08/03/2016
2005 Honda CR-V EX AWD 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 5A)

My parents gifted me this lovely SUV the day before homecoming in high-school. I was beyond excited, though slightly bummed that I hadn't received a sedan. (I learned to drive in a mid-sized sedan; anything larger frightened me at the time.) Nevertheless, I had a car that was just for me. I don't know too much about cars, but I can tell you what I've learned after putting 17k miles on this trooper. I'll start with the cons, since that's probably what you're reading the reviews for. The acceleration isn't anything to get excited over. I've noticed a slight lag as I try to accelerate with passing/merging. Also, at times when I slow down (like at a red light that turns green the second you stop) there is a sort of click or hiccup as my car shifts back into gear. Not sure if this is a common problem among the models, though. The 20-23mpg wasn't stunning either, but for the size and space within the vehicle, can you really complain that much? Recently, I had to put about 1k in repairs (done through Honda dealership--probably a mistake, could've gotten it done cheaper) to update some hoses and belts within the engine as I had begun to have issues with power steering. But hey, that's the only repair I've ever needed. The interior is noisy when driving, but with the radio on, it's hard to notice. Also, limited knick-knack storage. Now for the positives. THE A/C, OH, JESUS! That system blew me away. With my car being as old as she is, I was expecting a toot of air every now and then. No. You have a warm, toasty oven as a heater, and a polar ice cap for the cooler. Secondly, the seats are super comfortable. Lots of support and super roomy even for taller passengers. I can fit three friends easily in the back. Thirdly, you have a picnic table as your floor in your trunk! Seriously. It's so great. The drive is smooth without any lag in steering as you turn. You have so much opportunity for cargo space, it's not even funny. The seats collapse and fold up behind the driver and passenger seat to expand trunk space. I fit half an apartment's worth of junk back there when my boyfriend moved into a house. Also, it takes probably $20-$25 to fill up your tank. I'm impressed and I love my little mom-car. I think it's a very good investment, personally.

If you are looking for an inexpensive used car you can not go wrong with an CR-V. I have owned this car since it was new and it is one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. I believe that I can put over 400 thousand miles on it and it will still be running.

...my wife got hit and it got totaled. At the time it was 13 years old with about 190k miles and I seriously would have driven it for 100k more. We had very few problems with this vehicle and it’s still incredibly comfortable. We did have some A/C issues, but I won’t hold that against the CR-V, b/c that was a Honda issue at the time. Besides our local long-time Honda mechanic fixed them no problem. Had some other issues that come with a vehicle of that age and mileage, but never anything major. I’ll truly miss driving my CR-V and have no idea what I’ll get next, b/c the CR-Vs just aren’t like they used to be. You made a good one, Honda and thanks for keeping my wife safe when she got hit. Speaking of that, the CR-V held up amazing in the accident, so it’s definitely a safe vehicle as well.

Bougth this car 6.5 years ago and now have 170,000 trouble free miles. Daughter has been driving this car for awhile and with this much mileage, i still have confidence in it to go cross country and back. Not all is good in the beginning since the dealer charged me over $1000 for some kind of paint sealant, it's crap it takes along time to buff it to shine. My 9 years old Odyssey didn't have it and with over 210,000 miles still looks good. The recommended tire pressure inflation is way too low for the weight of the vehicle at 29 PSI. With 29 PSI the mileage is at 20 city and 23 Hwy and obvious underinflation tire wear. Finally got dialed in at 36 PSI all around to get the 23/26.

I bought this car over 6 years ago and has 100K+ miles on it. Buying it was the best decision I ever made. It's been rock solid with very few issues. No major breakdowns of any sort. I've made several trips up and down the east coast with it and hope to make several more. It's comfortable, quiet, has ample space for everything I need. The gas mileage isn't the greatest but nowhere near bad. I love this car and shutter to think of the day it will give up the ghost. I don't think that will happen any time soon.

While it is a little slow to get up to 60, its an awesome car if you take car of it correctly. (regular service and don't red line it 24/7) It can take an abuse if need be and extremely comfortable. If and when I have kids I will strongly recommend this car as their first car. MPG is fairly good but it fluctuates heavily depending on how you drive it. Over all great car!

Best SUV of the Year

The Honda CR-V of 2005 beat out all the other SUVs in 2005 for quality & traction control (yes, even the Jeep Wrangler!). This is a fine tuned, well manufactured automobile! I've owned this car since college. Over the years, I've watched my friends spend $1000s in out of pocket costs for parts and labor to keep up their cars. Over the past 2 years (130,000-160,000) I've spent about $3000 in repairs (mostly due to the fact that I've kicked the crap out of the suspension on Colorado's rocky roads). Since I've left, I haven't done anything but the regular servicing. This car will take the abuse and just keep on rolling on!

I've had my CR-V since new in 2005. Just went over 87,000 miles. Bought one set of tires and change the oil every 8000 miles. Still runs great. I don't know the problems that others are having, but you can always get one bad vehicle out of thousands made. Don't judge this car by a few bad ones.

My mom bought this car brand new in 2005 and gave it to me for my 16th birthday in December 2015. My Mom struggled giving me this car because she loved it so much. I love the car so much, the gas mileage isn't the best in the whole world but it's not bad, especially taking the size into consideration. I can easily fit 4 friends in the car no problem. The car didn't start to have a lot of problems until about a year ago when it hit 80,000 miles. Since then, we've replaced the radiator, the head gasket, control arm bushings, and spark plugs. It totaled about $2,500 but keep in mind that besides tires and brake pads, we haven't had to do anything else the entire 11 years we've owned it. This is a great starter car and I would recommend it to anybody. Obviously get a pre purchase inspection anyways because every car is different.

Best Fuel Efficiency in an SUV

My wife and I are touring musicians and although we would have preferred to buy a hybrid to get better fuel efficiency, we needed an SUV that would fit all of our gear. However, this car totally amazed us! We average about 35,000 miles per year and have been getting up to 33mpg on the highway even though the EPA only lists it at around 26mpg. This car is extremely comfortable, safe, and reliable. My mother just recently bought a new CR-V based on my recommendation and experience with ours.

This CR-V doesn’t have the road-swallowing pickup I was used to from my previous Hondas. (Prelude & Accord) But otherwise I’m very happy with this purchase. The ride feels very comfortable and stable, the visibility is great (no blind spot that I’ve noticed) and the AWD and high clearance make the climb up my driveway much easier. I call this car Snorlax because it’s powerful and sleepy just like the Pokémon!

First thing to know is that the paint finish is superb. I waxed this CR-V a few times early on then never again for the 11 years. It still shines and beads water. The interior leather, 11 years later, is still in near perfect condition. I changed the tires right after purchasing because I wanted something smoother and quieter. It was a well worthwhile investment. It handles remarkably well in rain and snow. (I got a set of snow tires on steel wheels that switch to for the winter and have never had any problems.) The AWD and anti lock brakes work very well. I get 20 mpg in stop and start city driving of very short distances. I work 5 miles from home. Having this car has made finding a new one I like, very difficult. Technologically and safety wise, this car was way ahead of its time with the AWD, ABS, number air bags, a multi disk CD player, and a tilt, slide back, and view through moon roof.

I've had my CRV for over 4 years now, over 100k miles, no problems except for changing the oil, the tires, the brakes and the rear differential fluid, and I drive aggressively. The CRV is fun to drive, looks attractive even though not new, and I don't feel as if I'm being "overconsumptive" even though I'm driving a SUV.

I bought my CR-V second hand (important) and after driving it around for a couple of weeks the transmission failed on my way home, it had 335,000kms. It cost around $4500 to rebuild it. I think the previous owners used to pull a trailer behind it so that might have really strained it enough for this to happen. There was also a leak in the brake fluid when I got it so I wasn't the most ecstatic about that. Other than those two issues, which could probably be attributed to the previous owner, I do believe the CR-V is a great car to own for anybody. It runs well enough, the AC is great, haven't had any wiring issues and very comfortable with plenty of extra space in the back. Overall all a pretty good car.

Of course Honda should always be praised for it's engine reliability and performance (my main concerns when buying) but there have been a few issues I wished I could have seen coming. First of all, the front seat leg room is not good if you're over 6 feet tall. Secondly, the ride (suspension) left lots to be desired. Thirdly, changing the headlight bulbs is a bit of a chore which wouldn't be a big deal if they didn't burn out so often. And lastly, the instrument bulbs are also quite unsatisfactory. I'm hoping the 2018 models have addressed those issues. If they have, I WILL buy another CRV.

I love the CRV. Gas mileage averages in town around 24 mpg, while on highway I've gotten as high as 30 mpg. Large enough for soccer games and all that we need, yet small enough that maneuvering is similar to driving a small car. Reliability wise, it's a Honda - enough said! Seats could be a little more comfortable, but for the price this is a great automobile. Love the Heating/AC controls, and cruise is conveniently on steering wheel. Perfect vehicle for everyday tasks, and also fits the bill for travel.

I love my crv but I wish they had a better heating system in them for the winter months.. I find the higher I set my heater the more it seems to suck the gas gauge down ( fast) maybe I am setting it wrong or something. Also I wish they would put a bigger gas tank on them .. Other than that I love my crv

I purchased my CR-V in 2005 after trading in a '98 Subaru Forester that was starting to give me some headaches. Immediately, I realized I was in a much better, high-end vehicle. I have not had any problems at all with it. Just replaced the battery earlier this year, and I'm looking for my 3rd set of tires (current set of Tiger Paw's are lousy in snow). I will need rear rotors & pads soon, but that's it so far! The gas mileage is fantastic, there's plenty of room for 3 adults in the backseat, tons of cargo room, the exterior looks great - no paint chipping or fade like my old Subaru. Looked at a new '10 Forester just for fun & the interior looks cheap. My CR-V is a Lexus in comparison.

We bought our CRV based on Honda's reputation. It is only 3 years old with 50,000 miles on it and the ac broke. It cost $1,800 to fix. Apparently the mechanic said this is common with the CRV. He also said he has seen many with transmission issues. Think twice about the CRV before purchasing. Investigate with a mechanic that you trust about their reliability. Up until now we really enjoyed ours but to avoid any other big ticket repairs we are considering trading it in. It's ridiculous to have to put thousands of dollars worth of repairs into a car that is not that old especially with the reputation honda has for reliability. I guess the CRV is the exception.

Bought it for a week, drove in deep snow, it performed very well. I compared CRV to Toyota Rav4, Mazda Tribute, Chev Equinox, Mitsubish Outlander and Nissan Xterra. Factors I used to evaluate them are price, build quality, gas mileage, interior space, safty, resale value and features I like. After months of research and test drive, CRV is the winner. It has a good price with all disired features included, honda quality, best in class interior volume, very good gas mileage and best resale value. CRV's engine is only 160hp, but with 162 ft-lbs of torque at low rpm, acceleration should be enough for most drivers. To get most power out from engine, better select manual transmission.

Great design. Mediocre power. Bought with 119,000 miles on it. A/C started acting up within a week of buying it but a complete emptying of the system fixed the problem. A/C is now ice cold at 135,000 miles. At about 132,000 I developed a problem with the right axle which will have to be replaced shortly as the shaking is getting worse.

I have owned my 2005 CR-V for about 4 1/2 years now and love it! It has about 120,000 miles on it now; had 29,000 when I purchased it. No problems at all - all I've done is change the oil on schedule (every 5000 miles), replace the tires and brakes once each, and regular maintenance items. We've taken it on many 400+ mile trips and it provides a very comfortable and safe ride every time. Cargo room is great and comes in handy often! The interior plastic trim does gouge easily if you're not careful when loading large items, and the "H" on the steering wheel will discolor if wiped with a Clorox-type wipe (oops). Otherwise, it's a fantastic vehicle that we'll have for years to come!

3 1/2 years and no buyer's remorse! My CR-V has proven both an efficient and comfortable daily commuter as well as a versatile camping vehicle with decent offroad capability - which has been put to the test many times. I haven't charged across raging rivers or rumbled up rocky slopes like in the commercials, but I've sure as hell put the AWD to the test on muddy trails, sandy ground and rough terrain (never been stuck yet!). I've obsessively tracked the mileage since I got my CR-V, getting a lifetime average of 24MPG in 50/50 mixed city/hwy driving. I've gotten up to 31 MPG on long road trips. Not bad for an AWD SUV.

I travel in and out of state for work so I need something good on gas with awd. I owned my 99 accord 10 years with 230k and all she needed was regular maintenance. In the 3 years I have owned this truck I have replaced the oil pressure switch 3 times, catalytic converter clogged, a/c issues, rear calipers seized, interior lights in dash inoperable, lower ball joints and (the cherry on top) the piston rings went which means my motor needs to be replaced. And I still owe money on the loan. Honda is not what they use to be :(

Good car to drive, but beware of gremlins with age

We have owned our 05 since it was two years old with only 19k. It now has almost 180k. The first few years were great, but we now have an issue with the car pulling to the right despite changing both of the front control arms and all of the struts. Additionally, it has a front end pop when turning despite having a new ball joint and never being in an accident. The main issues are the electrical gremlins of this car. I have had to replace the drivers window motor and now I cannot move the mirrors or use the drivers door swich to lock or unlock the car. A regulator for the AC went out a couple of years ago. The ac compressor went out 200 miles from home last summer on a 110 Def F day. CRVs of this vintage have a design flaw where the compressor is too close to the exhaust manifold so it gets too hot under heavy use. I have owned three Hondas over the years and this is by far the worse one. I am planning on trading this heap for a Rav4 soon.

I have been a victim of the A/C compressor defect, along with countless others. I have a 2005 CR-V, which had the first compressor go bad at 56,000 miles. I bought it new from Coral Springs Auto Mall in 08/05. In 05/08, the A/C system failed to blow cold air. I took it in and the dealer told me that the compressor "exploded" and shot filament through the whole system, hoses and all had to be replaced for 3200.00. I am a single mother, and could not afford that. I called my own personal mechanic, who told me that my compressor "locked up", brought it out, and showed me what happened and how it worked. He fixed it for 1300.00.

I honestly can't say enough good things about my CRV. It drives nicely, handles well, has nice features and is relatively good on gas mileage for an SUV. Good interior space - comfortably fits my Great Dane, Bulldog, cat carrier, and all my luggage without feeling squished and cramped. Reliability is phenomenal! I have over 125,000 miles on my car in just 3 years and haven't had to do more than the scheduled oil changes and a brake repair earlier this year.

After 3 1/2 years of ownership, I can honestly say I've been very happy with this vehicle. In my mind the most informative reviews are the ones written after years of driving, not the knee-jerk responses people often post before they've had a chance to get to know their vehicle. This CR-V has been a great all-rounder. It's impressed me on road trips with excellent cargo space and surprisingly good MPG (averaged 30MPG highway on long trips). My CR-V's been great for my constant outings with the dogs, and has even done some fairly serious offroading (which it handled quite well). The AWD has performed admirably in severe snow\ice conditions. Overall happy with only minor complaints (see below).

Pewter SE Problems

I purchased my Pewter Pearl SE on 2/14 from a dealership. It had 24 miles on it when I got it. The next morning there was a puddle on my driveway. Took it for repairs, and they changed out the power steering reservoir and hoses. The next morning, I had a smaller puddle, but this time it was oil. There is a faulty seal. It is 2/17 now and the car is still in the shop. The drives from my house to the service center have been enjoyable. The car is comfortable and seems to drive a lot like a nice car. My wife loves the room and the way it drives. Anyway, the dealer will not replace it, so I guess I will be trading a CRV SE with 100m in and taking a hit. Obviously this one is bad.

I bought my CR-V just 5 months ago, so I will not address longevity. It had 22,000 miles, now it has 28,000. I have experienced no mechanical problems. I now drive on average 70 miles a day, and the driver's seat is fine for a long drive. I have a 75lb dog who can sit, stand, walk, lay down, look out the window, and stretch in the back with the seats folded up. All of that space and I still get 25-27 mpg with only a third of my driving being on the highway. I've had no complaints from passengers in a full car on comfort. The value of this vehicle is unbelievable, I wish I had bought it as my first car rather than my second, I love it!

Poor Gas Mileage and Rattles

I drove a 2000 CRV-SE for 4.5 years and traded for one of the first 2005 models off the line. I am sorry I traded the 2000. Gas mileage never comes close to the promised mileage on the sticker and is much worse than 2000 model. The car is plagued with rattles that the dealer can't fix. The ride is stiff and uncomfortable. XM radio is nice, but the $500 extra cost is misleading in sales brochure that says "XM ready". Heated seats are nice, as are the radio controls mounted on the steering wheel. There is less space on the floor between the front seats than the 2000 model. Can't fit my Longaberger roadtrip basket where it sat in the 2000.

We (wife & I, no kids) purchased this due to our frequent outdoors trips. Shortly after purchasing, we drove in a blizzard and on icy roads for 2.5 weeks. The AWD worked great during the storms and icy conditions. After the blizzards, we loaded a small (4x8) trailer on the back with our belongings and drove 1,300 miles along the western coast, then through the deserts into CO. We drove though the Rockies and in snow often, eventually driving another 1,200 miles with another 4x8 trailer to the south eastern US. We've spend a LOT of hours in this vehicle and used it to drag a trailer across the entire US. OR to CO to AL. Love the vehicle, no complaints at all.

I photograph vehicles for a living and I drive all sorts of different types of vehicles. I have to say, this was the most fun I have ever had driving an SUV off road for my pictures. I took a Chevy Avalanche in the same area I took this Honda CR-V. I had a hard time getting the Chevy Avalanche to climb this solid 45° slope for pictures, however this little CR-V took the slope like it was NOTHING! I'm a fan of large trucks and SUV's but guess what. Those larger trucks and SUV's are not going to make it through tight trails behind woods like this little fox can. It's more comfortable than it looks and has a lot more room than portrayed.

I have had my V (#Four off the line) for little over a year now...Got it with 65k. Was not even broke in. Put about 90 miles on it before the VTEC switch went out. Thats $300. Put another 2k on it before it went out again...It seems that all the little things that can go wrong has..Well here we are about 6 months in with this car, two sets of brakes, two VTEC switches three sets of spark pugs. a set of coil packs ($90 a pop!), a fuel pump, a new lower control arm. ex ex In the past year i have sunk a little over 2 grand into the accord that wanted to be a "SUV". lets just say i have been thinking about setting it fire

My dad purchased this vehicle for me in Nov. of 2004 when they first came out. I wasn't really excited about the CR-V because I had never really liked them in the first place. My dad being the Honda fanatic that he is, encouraged my to try it. When I first found out about the 4cyl engine I wasn't too excited, but when I started to drive it, every day I started to like it more. I was very impressed with the handling from the awd and the power of the small engine. The tweeter sound kit is very nice and the 6-CD changer is a great thing to have. The leather seats are very comfortable and easy to clean and most of all it makes the CR-V look even more stylish and expensive. All in all it's a great SUV.

We enjoy our CRV. It has two major problems for us that may not bother anyone else. The center casino should be replace with a true console not a tray like it has now. Honda needs to quite the road noise. I did a lot of undercoating but I may sell the vehicle because of the road noise. I have had not one single problem otherwise.

I've had my CR-V for 2.5 years. It's been a great car and fun to drive, but I think it may be starting to show its age! At 2 years/30K the brakes, battery and tires all had to be replaced--too soon, in my book. Car has pulled to right from the start, but I live with that. From day one, I've experienced a grinding noise from the rear when turning hard (U-turns). Finally, at the shop today I was told there is a differential repair bulletin out for this, requiring resurfacing and new pads (work done at Honda's expense). Lately, I notice the car is a bit sluggish starting, and it surges at stop signs. The VSA indicator comes on occasionally. Hope this isn't a problem brewing!

I bought my graphite pearl CRV three months ago after months of investigation and test drives of all small SUVs in this category. Ninety days after purchase, I believe I made the right choice. As a former owner of a Chevy Silverado pickup, I had an adjustment period in the shorter wheelbase vehicle--ride a bit choppy and tire noise more intrusive, especially on coarse pavement. But I liked the much improved fuel mileage-- about 22 in town (I drive very conservatively.) and 26--27 on the highway at a steady 65 mph. Handling is tight, steering a bit heavy, fit and finish exceptional, seating firm but comfortable, controls smoothe and intuitive. Of course, it'a a Honda, so it will last!

A good car almost a year old. Although the sticker indicated a fuel economy of 22/27 mpg, I have never been able to get better than 17/22 mpg -- very poor for a car this size with a 4 cylinder engine. My 2002 Lexus RX300 gets 19/25 mpg and it is a heavier car with a 6 cylinder engine. Have been generally please with the CR- V otherwise. When the rear seats are down, it has very large cargo space for a car this size -- bigger than my Lexus SUV

We live in New Orleans and evacuated for Katrina in our CR-V. We've spent the past four months driving back and forth between NOLA and Houston in it, hauling people, pets, and stuff - bikes, plywood, food, whatever. I have to say this vehicle has done everything asked of it, and done it well. With the roof rack and the fold down seats, we can really load it up. All of the little nooks and crannies are very helpful for cell phones, walkie talkies, maps, drinks, and snacks. In all, it has exactly the right combination of space, versatility, and economy for us. It's a very practical and affordable compromise vehicle.

This is our first CR-V but fourth Honda and its proving to be just as reliable as the others (now 3 yrs old with 32000miles). Mileage is worse than our other Hondas but its a SUV. We have used all 72cu ft of cargo space more than we thought we would, can't imagine how we lived without a SUV before. For those complaining about road noise I suggest Goodyear Comfortreds, helps a lot with noise and its a good tire as well.

RATTLE NOISE

I love my CR-V a lot. I feel safe in it. The only problem I have is with my back window (hatch). No matter how tight I close (or slam) it, it's seems to make noise as I'm driving down the road. I have to turn my radio up just to not hear it, but that doesn't get rid of the fact that it's there. In looking at the design of the window, I would think there would be some rubber padding or something between the window and how it attaches. Maybe that is why it's rattling. Dealer said it's as tight as it will go. Also pulls to the right on acceleration like previous posts stated. Dealer said front wheel drives do that. Right wheel is the power wheel and is the reason it pulls? Still love it.
