Overview
The Civic is Honda's iconic small car that has earned a deserved reputation over the years for being versatile, frugal, sporty and big on long-term value. The latest Civic, introduced for 2022, is available as both a sedan and a hatchback. There are also distinct versions for nearly everyone. The LX and Sport trims are the least expensive, but even those offer a hint of enthusiasm from behind the wheel. If a loaded-up Civic is what you want, Honda has you covered with the Sport Touring, which also comes with a hybrid powertrain. And there's the highly focused Type R, which is a driver's car to its core.
Edmunds spotlight: The Goldilocks Civic is the one to have
If what you need is a small, practical and efficient car, the 2027 Honda Civic is a great candidate. Most people will be happy with the 150-horsepower base engine that comes in the LX and Sport trims. But the sweet spot in the Civic lineup is the midlevel Sport Hybrid trim. It makes a pleasing 200 horsepower and can get up to an EPA-estimated 49 mpg combined. The downside? Civics can cost a little more than their rivals, but we think it's a price that is worth paying. We're not expecting major changes for the 2027 Civic, though we won't be surprised if Honda applies some minor ones to the car's features or trim level lineup.
Competitors to consider
The 2027 Civic will compete with a diverse set of compact sedans and hatchbacks — both gas and hybrid-powered. Key rivals include the Toyota Corolla (available as a gas or hybrid sedan), the Hyundai Elantra sedan (including its hybrid variant), and the Toyota Prius hatchback. The Mazda 3 hatchback and Subaru Impreza offer hatchback alternatives, but neither is available with a hybrid powertrain.
