The Honda Civic is one of the automaker's most impressive vehicles, offering a wonderful combination of practicality, performance and value. Honda refreshed the Civic last year, adding an impressive hybrid powertrain and updating its exterior styling. As such, there aren't any major changes for 2026. But as it stands, the Civic is one of the best small sedans (or hatchbacks) on the market today.

Edmunds spotlight: An excellent hybrid powertrain

The Civic's hybrid powertrain churns out 200 horsepower — matching the sporty Civic Si — and bests it when it comes to low-end torque. That means it feels extra-punchy for low-speed driving around town. The hybrid doesn't come with all the performance goodies you'll get on an Si, but it does boast an awesome 49 mpg in combined city/highway driving according to the EPA's estimate. Buy a Civic and you'll love the hybrid power's hard-to-beat blend of performance and efficiency.

The Toyota Corolla is the Civic's top competitor, and Toyota took great strides to make sure this generation of the popular compact was more competitive than its predecessors. But the Corolla feels old (it was last redesigned in 2020), and its hybrid variant doesn't hold a candle to the Civic hybrid. Not only is the Toyota less efficient, it's also significantly less powerful. Other solid picks include the Hyundai Elantra, which comes standard with a ton of advanced driver aids and also offers a hybrid powertrain, and the Mazda 3, which is plenty sporty in its own right.

How does the Honda Civic drive? The Civic Type R's capabilities are impressive. In our testing, it sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, nearly a second faster than a Hyundai Elantra N with manual transmission, but slower than all-wheel-drive rivals like the Volkswagen Golf R and Toyota GR Corolla by about a half-second. Stopping from 60 mph required just 108 feet, a standout number for a hatchback even on a relatively chilly testing day, and the Type R's handling grip (1.07 g) is as good as sports cars that cost twice as much.

Numbers aside, the Type R is simply a joy to drive. It handles with confidence and stability, with steering, shift action and throttle calibration that all feel well polished. Big wheels, a stiff suspension and a stiff body should make for an awful ride, but it's more than acceptable given its performance. Rutted roads and expansion joints cause some jostling, but the Comfort mode setting helps keep things supple while maintaining excellent body control. The driver aids work well, with a digital instrument cluster that displays surrounding cars. Other driver aids like blind-spot warning, forward collision warning and lane keeping assistance are also welcome additions and work well.

How comfortable is the Honda Civic? The interior is largely the same as in any other Civic, with the notable exception of the seats, red carpeting, shift lever and Type R badging. The seats are a real highlight, both comfortable and incredibly supportive. Elevating the interior in a subtle yet appreciable way are the red carpeting, which extends to the rear footwells, and the perfectly weighted aluminum shift knob. The most jarring part of the Type R experience, though, is the level of tire roar that intrudes into the cabin. It's noticeable at almost any speed and forces you to speak up in conversations.

The driver's seat position is phenomenal, situated low with the steering wheel meeting the center of your chest. It's easy to find a comfortable position. With lots of legroom behind the driver and passenger, rear passengers won't feel cramped. That's partly because the Type R only seats two in the back; other Civics have a middle seat. The lack of a center armrest and rear air vents is a glaring oversight, though. Since it's based on a Civic hatchback, the Type R is surprisingly family-friendly. Child boosters in the rear will fit, but fitting a rear-facing infant seat will force front passengers to scooch forward.

How’s the tech? The Type R's touchscreen has an intuitive menu structure and quick responses that make it easy to use while driving. The 9-inch display includes the Google Built-In software suite, which brings Google Assistant voice commands, maps and more. The screen's location high on the dash also allows you to keep your line of sight on the road. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is standard, but we found the connection occasionally slow and unstable. The standard 12-speaker Bose audio system sounds great and produces a satisfying amount of bass.

The hatch design offers more than enough space for everyday use and happily swallows large items without protest. There's plenty of storage space for smaller items inside too, with a generous glovebox, usable door pockets, a decent-size center console, and a cubby underneath the climate controls. This hatch might be seriously hot, but it's still a Civic and lives up to its promise of being a practical, usable space to carry both people and everyday things.
