Making me pay to fix defective A/C

Honda installed defective A/C system and I had to pay to fix it. How about $2000! All the rest is from my original review and still true. My display freezes. Bluetooth dies. All problems are intermittent but Honda won't fix it. One or both of the computers running the cameras, voice recognition, Bluetooth, radio etc is defective and Honda won't fix. That's the old review. Now the new stuff: transmission is getting "glitchy". Shakes and rattles your teeth under the right conditions. Also jerks your neck. Piece of "you know what".

Great Car to Drive

There is nothing more you can expect from this generation Civic, especially the exterior design for Hatchback Sport trim. The only unsatisfactory for this specific trim is the audio system, that is the most basic audio system ever for nowadays technologies.

2018 Honda Civic EX-L 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
2 of 2 people found this review helpful

I sold my 2006 Accord EX-L to get into my 2018 Civic EX-L to give reference to my review. I am impressed with the 1.5 L turbo engine. The power and torque makes all styles of driving fun and engaging. The CVT is surprisingly good. Many people dislike CVTs for whatever reason but Honda really got this one right. The Civic has one of the smoothest shifting CVTs I have ever driven. The style is sharp and looks better than any past Civic I can remember. The interior feels and looks very nice. I like the instrument cluster, it is not the best, but it works for the design of the car. The backseats are small as you would imagine in this car class. The size of the trunk is good. The negatives about this car are the dimwitted climate controls and the infotainment system it lives inside of. The infotainment system is okay but the climate controls are just woeful. I cannot tell you how much fun it is trying to turn the A/C on in Texas in July at 5PM in the afternoon and waiting 5-10 seconds for the climate control screen to awaken so you can activate the A/C. My Civic does have remote start which is great but waiting those agonizing seconds to change to AC and crank up the fan speed takes away from the comfort the remote start might have provided. Lesson is anticipate the climate of when you return to your car so you only need to fine tune the A/C settings rather than melt while waiting. My only other small gripe is that there is no seat back pocket behind the drivers seat which cheapens an otherwise nice interior. I wonder whose bonus got saved by deciding not to include two seat back pockets. Overall, the Civic has been treating me very well and it is so much fun to drive. I likely won't buy a car this small again due to how tall I am however I fit in the car with no issue but no one fits behind me when I drive. I am very impressed with what Honda has done with the Civic. Update (10/20): Everything is pretty much the same as written above except the climate controls are a bit more responsive upon start up of the car, instead of 5-10 seconds it is closer to 3 seconds (software update?) but still longer than it should be. One thing to note, since this car only has direct injection you will want to use a fuel additive/cleaner every so often (I do it every 5k around when I get my oil changed) to prevent sooting in my engine. The problem I have encountered is the fuel dilution problem that is more notable with the CRV of the same generation but my Civic has that same engine (1.5 L turbo). I went to the dealer to try to get that solved because my oil reeks of gasoline which should not happen in any car. My service advisor said he had never heard of this problem with the Civics, which was really obnoxious, because you can very clearly smell the gas in the oil system when you pull the dipstick. The dealer replaced the drain plug (with rubber gasket), reprogrammed the fuel injectors and TCM, and did and oil and filter change. Bottom line, my oil system still reeks of gas after 2 oil changes since the warranty service to correct the fuel dilution problem. While this won't be a problem in the near future, those of you buying this generation of Civic with 1.5 L turbo with more than 60k-75k miles will want be aware of the fuel dilution and know that it will likely deteriorate rubber and plastics within your engine quicker than normal.

Don't Have A Flat Tire TPMS SUCKS

Chikadee, 06/28/2019
2018 Honda Civic EX-T 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
2 of 2 people found this review helpful

If you have a flat tire and have to buy a new tire before you can get to a dealership for a replacement, you are out of luck in resetting the TPMS Sensor / dash lights...even after recalibrating the sensor. Even the dealership says there's nothing they can do! Really? If they can't (won't) fix it...who can? So, I have to either buy 4 brand new tires, or drive another 30,000 with this light in my face from the dash? Nope...I traded my Civic EXT in on a Toyota....I could live with not having a power driver's seat, and a few other inconveniences, but this one got me. Beware....and just don't have a flat tire!!!

Excellent buy! Great Performance would be an understatement! Loved my last 5-speed manual civic which is still going passed 176k miles, but couldn't pass up my for sure upgrade to the 6-speed manual CIVIC SI! I love the color which is a very luxurious looking gray which I have already been getting compliments on how beautiful this vehicle is; especially after I purchased was looking mint and brand new fresh out the car wash and cleaned up. Hope I can duplicate that wash myself to keep it looking like new and gorgeous as it was that night. Technology in this is awesome especially the auto unlocking/locking doors feature all with my key fob in my pocket! Has a quick performing pick up with the turbo which I love all for a classy and sporty mixture which i was looking for."Can't go wrong with a honda!"

I've only had my 2018 silver EX-L for 3 weeks but I'm loving it! The leather seats make a huge difference and is worth the splurge, especially if you're going to have the car longterm like me. It drives very well (although I wish I had Honda sensing), is very spacious, and is a great looking car. Gas isn't as good as advertised...but I live in the city and drive in mostly traffic, so I probably get 30-32 MPG, not 40. Overall, recommended. You can't go wrong with Honda

My First Honda

Don Menges, 09/19/2018
2018 Honda Civic Type R Touring 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6M)

I traded in a Subaru WRX and before that had a Nissan 370Z. At 70, I’ve been gradually working my way to more reasonable transportation. Keep that in mind regarding this review. The other vehicles had 260hp and 305hp respectively. The Honda Civic Hatchback has 170hp, so the power and acceleration is significantly less, but so is my reaction time! The Honda is zippy enough though. The other cars had super suspensions so they handled better, but they also were a “hard” and noisy ride. The Honda handles OK though and it’s quiet and comfortable. All these cars had leather interiors, the Honda was the most refined of the lot. The Honda also has the best electronics of the bunch. All the controls are obvious and work intuitively. The Subaru was the worst. I’ve only had the Civic for a few weeks, but I’m really happy with it. The design of the hatcback is sportier looking than the WRX, even though it doesn’t have the muscle. When looking for a replacement car I considered a Toyota Corolla, a Mazda 3, and a Chevy Cruze. The Honda is the best vehicle in the bunch although a bit pricier. My only complaint is that there was no way to get the Hatchback Sport Touring (rather than the EX-L) without Nav and Honda Sensing. I didn’t really want that. I did want leather though, so I had to accept the Nav on my vehicle. The header of this review was edited by someone else and indicates my Civic Hatchback is a Type R Touring. It is notxand I can’t change it. Rather it’s the Civic Hatchback EX-L with Navi.

Honda built one SERIOUSLY impressive vehicle here... but the things that don’t work as advertised can be beyond irritating and futile to try and get a straight answer. IN THE END, it’s a freakin’ Type R and a limited production fantastic vehicle.

A huge step up from your father's Civic

Grace, 01/15/2019
2018 Honda Civic EX-L 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)

My last Civic was a 1994 sedan. The 2018 Civic is a totally different car. That's to be expected due to changes in technology, but it still amazes me that the new EX-L (with leather seats and all) cost only $10,000 more than the base trim version that I purchased 23 years ago - yet it offers so much more. I appreciate little things, like the automatic headlights and door handle sensors, much more than I expected to. Compared to my latest car (a Volkswagen), the gas mileage is excellent. I'm not wild about the CVT - it feels oddly "soft" and I can't get used to not hearing the gears shift - but combined with the turbo, it provides plenty of power and acceleration. The biggest disappointments: 1. The touchscreen infotainment system is pretty awful. Changing audio inputs is like a three-step process, and adjusting the climate control settings requires at least two steps. (Oddly, the only thing that has an actual button or dial is the temperature adjustment.) 2. Initially, I found the driver's seat to be extremely uncomfortable. I've been able to improve the comfort a bit using the power seat controls to make lots of tiny adjustments, but I still end up with a sore back after longer drives. Things I really wish this car had: 1. Adjustable lumbar support. 2. Memory seats. 3. Anchors inside the trunk to tie things down and keep them from sliding around. 4. Rain-sensing windshield wipers. 5. Programmable garage door button(s). 6. Blind-spot monitoring on the left side.

Purchased a 2018 civic from Westbrook Honda......air conditioner went....compressor and condenser on order. Westbrook Honda fixed the air conditioner and since then the vehicle runs great. The car tracks like it is on rails and has plenty of power. The more I drive the car the more I like it. Westbrook fixed the air conditioner and the vehicle runs great....love it Love the car maybe next time I wouldn't get a dark color but that is about the only change.

Expensive Coffin

K. Jones, 07/11/2020
2018 Honda Civic LX 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 6M)

This car should be banned from production. It is not safe to drive on anything but dry, pristine, pavement. It does not handle well in the rain, sleet, wind, 1 inch of snow ( anything deeper, just stay home!) spots of frost, bits of random uneven pavement, small bumps. All of these send this car "squirreling" about on the road. The best I can describe the feeling is that you are driving on a bunch of marbles. The back fishtails and weaves with the slightest change in road surface. For example, we recently encountered a few miles of pavement repairs where they just apply the road filler to the cracks in the highway and I felt the car slither side to side when I drove over them. Very unnerving. At first, we thought it was just the cheap factory tires that came on the car, so I bought the most expensive, quality all seasons radials I could find and it did not make a difference. Disappointing. Another thing consumers should be aware of is the gas mileage significantly drops when you upgrade tires. Weird huh? At first, with factory "cheapies" I was getting 45 mpg average. Now with high grade tires, I can only get about 36mpg average. I'm old and sensible driver with economy driving practices. In conclusion, as soon as economically feasible, we will get rid of this scary hunk of tin. Until then, I drive it to the grocery store and back and only when the sun shines.

Owned this car for 2 years and doesn't get old. Love the great mileage I get on the freeway when I commute to work in the mornings. Averaging around 35 on good days. Packs a punch when I need to drop a gear to speed up. Exactly what I was looking for. Easy maintenance and no issues when owning this car so far. You'll hear road noise and the ride isn't all too comfortable but it's what to expect. Great car for a guy like me in his early 20s

Loyal Honda owner (bikes) for decades. Wanted a good looking coupe that handled well, had good MPG and had a great safety rating - this was it. The stereo is its weak point - not an impressive sound system at all. Road noise dampening is OK, you can hold a decent conversation in the car or on the phone. Seats are comfortable. truck is roomy. It was worth the price. UPDATE: I have a toyota Yaris I loved, but it was time to trade up for a little more safety and sophistication in my driving. This 2018 coupe became available and had low mileage. Design wise it had nice lines and the driver side cabin reminded me of a Mercedes 250C coupe I had a few years back. I got rid of the Mercedes because truthfully, I had no long term confidence in it's reliability. It was a supremely stylish car, eye catching, but I needed something with renowned reliability. In my youth and teens I had numerous Honda Motorcycles which were bullet proof in engineering and pleasingly aesthetically, So I decided to chance it and go in on the 2018 LX coupe. It was outfitted with a 2.0 four that has been the cornerstone of previous cars - I was pleased as I tend to shun turbo engines because they run hotter and am suspicious of long term durability. The car was comfortable to sit in, handled well, spirited in acceleration and highly capable in braking. Two faults: I'd have liked a more noise proof cabin, and apparently the LX did not come with a sun roof. Otherwise it was perfect for my needs. The car tracks exceptionally well and is very stable at high speeds. If driven normally, you will see 36-38 MPG. Oil consumption is nil. Summary, Honda has come a long, long way from the Civics of the 70's, producing quality style and high reliability. Proud owner, happy owner and will hold on to this one for at least 10-15 years.

Civics have come a long way! I particularly like the brand reliability, as the last 2 cars I've had from other manufacturers had serious problems. So far so good with Honda (1.5 years into ownership) Pros: storage (you're able to customize configuration), safety ratings, great acceleration, layout of cockpit, sleek styling of car overall, great gas mileage, heated seats, Maintenance Minder (computer gives oil use as a percentage, rather than overall mileage-based scheduling), navigation is easy to use, Andoid Auto or Apple CarPlay are easy to set up Cons: No lumbar support (I mean zero). This didn't bother me at first, but it sure became an issue over time with a daily commute of 70 miles. Should be included in the top trim level. Touchscreen - I echo those in the camp who say it's distracting and not user friendly. But then again I don't like to rely on screens in general. If there was a totally analog option, I'd take it :) Ambivalent LaneWatch - this is a camera on the passenger side mirror that shows the blindspot for when you're making a right turn or changing lanes to the right (activated upon turning the blinker on). I think I prefer a traditional radar-based blind spot monitoring system, but I'm getting used to LaneWatch. There is no auditory cue if someone is in your blindspot, like traditional BSMS, Nothing for the left side, either. Overall it's a great little car. Let's see if my 40+ year-old back and hips can deal with the seat over time. Honda: If you're going to market to the middle-aged, you gotta give us some more support!

Good mileage and ponies under the hood

The hp seems to kick in 3 gear and up, so the little guy moves right on to the freeway effortlessly. It is a pleasure to shift and it is a quiet ride considering it's a compact car. Mileage has been as advertised. Ample room to carry people and stuff. I would highly recommend the 6 speed, manual Sport model. I'm not a fan of CVT transmissions, and the Sport model has enough technology to be convenient and not distracting.

I love my Honda Civic. Great gas mileage, cute, comfortable and reliable. I only wish the model I chose had a Serious radio (not the aftermarket type) in it.

The 2018 Civic saved my life

I most recently owned a 2018 Civic..she was my 2nd Civic . I also owned a 2010. I drove my Cuvic home December 19,2018 and I was beyond in love with all the features. Living in upstate New York the heated seats were heaven and I loved the remote start. Last Friday an unexpected storm graced the small country town where I lived. A young driver lost control of their Ford Escape and sent my beloved civic and me into a rock wall..I am alive right now because that little civic saved my life.she is totaled but I cannot believe I got to walk away .i am devastated to lose her but I am already searching for my new civic! I’m a little girl at barely 5 feet and my whole family used to give me hell(I grew up FORD) but now I am confident my new civic will be welcomed by this great full family!

The first car I ever loved was a Mazda but the customer service was terrible. It left a bad impression on me. Then I got a Honda. I had strangers tell me a couple times how reliable of a brand it is, which I didn’t know. The customer service was better than I imagined. It’s a reliable car, comfortable, and easy to care for. Overall, the best car I’ve ever had. I’m most likely going to stick with this brand for the rest of my life, which says a lot because I’m not even 30.

My fourteenth Hondas all great cars, but why so many? Each of my children deserved a Honda, one son lost two in car crashes which were replaced with Hondas. Son #2 lost one in a crash and it was replaced with a Honda plus one for his wife, another Honda. Of course my daughter, did Not lose any in a crash but got a Civic Hybrid and Honda Insight for her son. A generous father who wants to be sure my children are safe even after serious crashes. All of my personal Hondas have been great and especially our current 2018 Honda Civic LX.

What can I say, I bought this car brand new one year ago and I still get excited when I see it in my driveway. The car is a beast, granted it’s not a type R or some other super high performance car, but it certainly acts like it. Every time I park someone compliments me on the color and style- I went with the lime green. It very comfortably seats 2 and our Pitt. Love the tech and the ease of use. I spent 3 years narrowing down my selection of cars... and I don’t ever regret my decision. *update* after 3 years, I’m still excited every time I remember I’ve got an electrifying green Honda. I’ve only had to change the oil a few times, replaced the battery, used the warranty once last year when my AC stopped working... which I was provided a rental during the repair. I’m still thrilled with my purchase.

2018 Coupe, Love the car, not the ergonomics

jerm, 10/26/2020
2018 Honda Civic LX-P 2dr Coupe (2.0L 4cyl CVT)

Found a great Coupe (black), beautiful car with only 6000k miles, person kept it in the garage, and it was a leased vehicle, no scratches, scuffs, nothing. So needless to say I got very lucky. Has the CVT transmission which runs smooth and the car just goes, without any effort. I-VTEC is just amazing. My only complaint is that the small screen is extremely dated, and I don't mind push button commands but it only recognizes FAT32 Flash Drives for music. Which is an easy fix, but the phone commands don't work right, and it just seems like something from like 2006 or so. Even the upper scale models with better infotainment screens were laggy. But I didn't buy it for that. It's a great car with minimal features, and just what i wanted, speedy and sporty. Reliable as well. And rare, since they are discontinuing the coupes. So very happy, I just wish what they did have in it, worked a little smoother. The seat belts are also a pain (weird i know), and the USB port etc. doesn't light up, and the controls at night are very dim. Also it only has one intermittent w-wiper setting LOL!! But oh well, having a moon/sunroof can make up for that. Just strange is all. It'll still be a 250,000 mile car, handling is surperb, mpg of 39 at times etc. Thanks Honda!!

Infotainment Problems

On May 31st 2018, I was not happy to buy my 2nd Honda Civic as I had a bad experience with my 1993 Honda Civic. The reason, I bought 2nd Honda Civic as my wife wanted this car badly. And the reason I did not want to buy the 2nd Honda Civic for the following reasons with my 1st Honda Civic 1. The Spark Plug Distributor was old technology whereas Toyota Tercel (which was cheaper than Honda Civic) had an electronic spark distribution system. 2. It was a pain to do regular maintenance compared to Toyota’s 3. Did not last as long as the Toyota Tercel which my friend bought. 4. Was expensive to maintain compared to Tercel/Corolla. Sometime in October 2021 the infotainment system started giving problems. It used to go blank for sometime and come back, touch screen stopped working, could not see the backup camera on the right- hand side camera. Did some research on the web and youtube.com and found out that lot of Civic owners had these issues? I tried some of their ways of fixing by resetting the system, replacing the fuse. Worked for a few months and then it totally went dead in the first week of January 2022. There was no recall on this issue but Honda Pilot owners had a similar issue and there was a recall on it after numerous complaints being filed with NHTSA. I filed a complaint with NHTSA and contacted the Lemon Law lawyers. They mentioned that you have one issue with this car, but if you had multiple issues, we would gladly pick up your case and advised me to contact Honda. In the mean time I took my car to the Honda Dealer and they charged me $2670.94 for replacing the power block behind the infotainment system. So, I paid 15% of the car price for replacing this part which was a highway robbery. I contacted Honda Company in the last week of January and was given a case number. Honda contacted me a few times to update me about the case. Finally, they contacted me in the 1st week of July and implied that it was my fault that the infotainment was out of service and they cannot help me in any way. If any of you Honda owners reading this and having similar problems please file a complaint with NHTSA, contact the lemon law lawyers and file a complaint with the Honda Company. If enough of you take the above steps, then some action will be taken and the consumers will not be left holding the bag. 2 months ago my Catalytic Converter went out. Took it to the dealer. Luckily it was under warranty and they fixed it at no charge. But I wasted about 12 hours and multiple trips to get it fixed. I am done with Honda's. Will have to look for other reliable brands/cars in the future, but not Honda.

The Civic is less roomy inside than the Hyundai Elantra, costs more, instrument panel is inferior, accelerates less quickly, far less warranty. In NO way worth the extra money over a Hyundai Elantra.

After one year driving this vehicle i m very disappointed. gas mileage is nothing compared with the accord 1.5 engine. They design this vehicle soo lower on the front the car touch every single bump on the street. And who’s decided remove the auxiliary in? 3.5 mm audio in? I don’t care if is old technology modern care still include that. Car is very good looking but nothing like the glorious Older ones. I can’t wait for change I don’t recomend this vehicle. To many choices out there better equipment options for less money!
