Seating and Paint Job

The vehicle looks nice all around. It doesn't seat well for tall people - I'm 6'4". I've adjusted the seating and still have issues. The top of the seat pushes my upper back forward and causes me to slouch forward after prolonged sitting (greater than 20 minutes); this causes neck pain. Also, there have been 5 (maybe 6) recalls on the vehicle since I bought it in February of 2015. I'm thinking about selling it and getting a truck that doesn't have so many issues with better seats. Update 05/16/17: The truck had more than 8 paint chips around the entire body. After doing some research I learned that GM vehicles (GMC, Chevy, Buick, etc.) have a history of paint chipping issues. Apparently, the primer GM uses is the problem. Regardless, my truck was still under the bumper to bumper warranty and it would have been a prolonged source of frustration and anxiety to get it taken care of to my (the customer) liking. GM only had one representative for my entire state (Maryland) so my situation worse. In December of 2016, I ended up trading in my truck for an F150: I took a hit financially but it was worth it. I won't buy another GM manufactured vehicle again and I will warn the people I know who are considering buying one about paint chipping issues.

I bought my 2015 GMC Canyon, ext cab WT in Nov ’15 with only 600 miles on the clock. Even though it is the WT version it’s the upgraded version with power windows, locks, remote, air and the V6 complete with the tow package capable of towing 7,000 lbs. The 2nd Gen truck looks awesome and great looking inside and out but that’s where it ends. I’ll admit that the engine is very powerful but the transmission and computer is the weakest link. It’s not a pleasure to drive. Example: driving on the highway, anything between 55 up to 70 and then needing to slow down and then pick back up on speed it starts to chug and surge like it’s struggling for the gear or running out of gas. It does the same thing when trying to climb a hill or going around a corner. I’ve had it into the dealership three times, had the computer upgraded and talked with them several times on the phone but they still don’t have a fix. I would have gladly exchange the 22+ MPG for 17 or 18 MPG to have it shift right. I would not recommend this truck. As of today of writing this, it only has 10,000 miles on it and I’m still not happy so I’m trading it in for a Jeep G.C. This was my first GMC and I was very disappointed and will never get another GMC again. 06.30.2021 No change, will still not buy another GMC. Bought a Tacoma 2 years ago and LOVE it. Plan on keeping till 500k miles are on the clock! June 2022, still no feedback or word from GMC. Talked to other's at the gas pump once in awhile and they say they have the same issues. Still think GMC is junk and don't care about their customers, only spit out more trucks for new suckers.

I have had my 2015 Canyon for over 2 years and just crossed over the 60,000 mile threshold. Overall I like the truck: good gas mileage for a 6-cylinder truck, handles well, brakes work very well, and no major maintenance issues. The main issue I have with the truck has to do with the technology, namely the navigation system and the entertainment system. First the navigation system. I won't say it's completely useless, but with the so-called "voice control", it's pretty close to useless. I've tried everything to get the voice recognition system to work more than occasionally but to no avail. And, no, I do not have an accent. Yes, I do speak slowly and clearly. Still, it hardly works. This is an added problem since the manual destination choices available on the touch screen are limited to a single page while the vehicle is moving. This is supposedly a safety feature. Interesting, since I can scroll through pages of station choices on the Sirius XM menu with no problem. Apparently, finding "Beatles Radio" or a particular NFL game while hurtling down the highway at 70 MPH is safe, but trying to find a destination while moving is not? And the biggest gripe on the NAV system is the updates. GM wants you to shell out over $100 to get updated maps. My portable Garmin offered lifetime updates for the cost of the unit. C'mon GM...seriously? If someone drops $35,000+ on a vehicle it doesn't seem unreasonable to include map updates with the cost of the vehicle. Second there is the menu to "save" favorites. It's set up on 3 pages....smaller icons on one page would be preferable, especially given the concern for "safety" on the aforementioned navigation system. Just not very user friendly.

I am writing this review for one simple reason; I think the 2015 GMC Canyon has been unfairly characterized as having poor reliability for too long. First, let's deal with the recalls. My truck, which I factory ordered, has been subject to numerous recalls, none of which required more than visual inspection by the dealer except a couple. I did have the steering wheel replaced under warranty because it often made a clicking noise while under way and I noticed quite several other owners were having the same issue. Replacing it solved the problem. There were two recalls involving the airbags, as I remember, and required actual replacement of at least one of them. Remember, however, that Takata airbags were a much larger issue than just these vehicles, although I don't think the GMC recalls for these airbags were related to flying shrapnel. Finally, GM issued a recall that required the dealer to replace a steering component that is designed to solve the potential of failed power assist, though I had never experienced any similar problem. Frankly, I expected some recalls from a first year, totally new model, so I was prepared for that. Obviously, most buyers would NOT be and that is fully understandable. Out of the roughly 65 vehicles I've owned, only three, including this truck, were brand new, and this one was the only one that required so many recalls. Incidentally, this truck was produced with the six speed automatic that so many owners complained about. The problem was that the programming for the transmission was designed to make it upshift as soon as the engine could handle it so that it was always in the highest possible gear. It was also reluctant to downshift even when pressing on the accelerator and when it did downshift, it would sometimes skip a gear or two causing the truck to leap forward at a high RPM. This lead to all sorts of drivability issues, obviously. My guess is that GM programmed it that way to maximize fuel economy and raise the fleet average so they could sell more less economical vehicles. Fortunately, after too long a time, GM released an updated "map" or program to the dealers that let them cure most of these problems. I had my truck updated and now it up and downshifts as you'd expect a proper automatic to shift. I have had no drivability issues since then. So, those are the issues I've had, but I am aware that other buyers have had problems with the A/C system, infotainment system and, I have read, even the engine. I have had no problems at all with anything other than those items already mentioned. Keep in mind that the V6 engine was used across a broad section of GM's fleet and has a reputation for outstanding dependability and service. It is smooth, powerful and economical to operate. Also, keep in mind that the 2015 Canyon and Colorado paired that engine with a six speed auto and not the eight speed that was introduced later and suffered some serious issues. Now a little more about my particular truck. It is now more than 7 1/2 years old, has always been garaged, never really used as a truck (except when I use it to put my 7,500 pound boat in and out of the water near my house) and has never been subjected to snow and ice. It currently has just less than 15K miles. So, I will be the first to admit that it has had an easy life so far and that has, no doubt, contributed to my satisfaction with it. It is a loaded SLT extended cab with everything on the list of options except the driver assist which was too unsophisticated, in my opinion, to justify the extra expense. You can no longer even order an extended cab in the top of the line (now Denali) trim. It is a perfect size to park easily, but still matches most SUVs for size and still fit in the garage. I drive a total of five vehicles, including a Lexus LS and a Shelby Mustang. This truck drives straighter and truer than any of them and as a result, is actually less tiring to drive on long trips than the other four. That's in spite of the driver's seat which is literally about 9/10ths the size it should be and a bit too firm to suit me. This has been a common complaint from other owners. Still, it remains a great long distance driver. The interior looks great, even slightly luxurious, but it is not as well done as its GMC name would imply. Some owners have complained that the driver's seat cover has split prematurely. Mine is still like new. The extended cab has two small rear seats that would accommodate, at best, small children and I would have deleted them when ordering if I could have. And I have noticed that the extra two rear doors can rattle a bit on a bumpy surface, but you notice interior noises in this truck because it is surprisingly quiet for a truck. And, yes, unloaded it rides a bit like a truck thanks to leaf springs in the back. Put a bit of a load in the bed or while highway driving, it is extremely comfortable and confident. My Shelby's overall ride is much harsher. So, I hope this review helps set the record straight. The 2015 Canyon, in my experience, is not a bad choice if you get one that has had all the recalls addressed. It is, arguably, the best looking mid sized truck to date, is actually fun to drive, easy to live with and gets reasonable gas mileage. I plan to keep mine as long as ICE vehicles are practical. I think that'll give me another 15 or 20 years. Note: This review is for an SLT extended cab LB with a V6 and 6-speed auto. I was unable to select this configuration when writing this review.

I purchased a base model GMC Canyon extended cab truck in 2015. I just sold the truck and purchased a 2020 Honda Ridgeline truck. The Canyon was a great daily driver and was still going strong when I sold the truck at 114,381 miles. I would suggest getting the 4 door if you do need more storage room in the back. Also, I would buy the 6 cylinder. The Canyon just seemed to be too heavy for the 4 cylinder. The automatic transmission can be somewhat erratic. This truck served me well, but it was just time to get another truck.

Great truck even though I just turned over 25,000. I have enjoyed everyone of them.
