Wanted a basic vehicle, good gas mileage, and the ability to haul something bigger than a suitcase. The standard version suits my needs just fine. Overall grade B+. Drives and handles similar to previous 2015 fusion. I've heard they have the same chassis. More "features" would have lowered grade for me. Push button start has NO purpose, and can be a safety hazard-no ignition interlock etc. Start stop is a battery killer in the midwest, and everyone I know has bypassed or disabled it. Myself, I'll save the 3k for foot activated liftgate. I realize some people want all the bells and whistles, but I don't. I have also owned 2011 and 2008 escapes. Biggest irritation with this one is liftgate ajar alarm. If you ever have to haul something with the liftgate strapped down(not able to close it), this alarm will drive you nuts, and there is no way to shut it off

2018 FORD ESCAPE is a Good Value

This vehicle is indeed a good value. I purchased a Ford Escape S. Base model that still has plenty of features to make driving this vehicle easy. The interior is a bit busy and maybe a bit dated. Backup camera screen is smaller than others but is functional. Handling is good - the vehicle feels solid. SYNC for android phone is very good. Balance of front versus rear seat room is good for a vehicle this size. Cargo space is adequate - again considering the relatively low price of the vehicle. With discounts and negotiation I purchased a $25,800 vehicle for $19,900. I am quite satisfied with the features and quality at that price. Now allow me to drive it 150,000 miles as I intend to do over the next 6 years and hopefully I will have minimal maintenance and repair issues. Then I will be even happier with my decision to purchase the Ford Escape S.

Love my 2018 Ford Escape S

This review is for the base model. I thought I needed all the “bells & whistles” and discovered I don’t. This compact SUV has the same 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine that my 2016 Ford Fusion SE had. I never had any problems or issues with this engine. Somehow this engine seems more spirited in the 2018 Ford Escape. I’m more than satisfied. The Escape has enough interior room for four—five is fine, but not comfortable, depending on the girth of the rear occupants. Leg room is excellent for any 6-footer or shorter. It’s a bit cramped in the rear seat if the front seats are moved too far back. I’m a techie by heart and find the telematics on this SUV to do everything I need from my ride. Having dealt with the SYNC with MyFord Touch in my previous vehicle, I find the base SYNC version much easier to navigate. I can deal with the buttons versus a touchscreen. The only negative point here is the small 4.2 inch screen above the center stack. I can work with that too. Of note is the electronic parking brake that works with a button. Gone is the handbrake lever which allows for more cubbies for small items. The exterior was updated in 2017. The Escape was given a redesigned front with a black grille that I find sporty. Tail lamps were also redesigned. I find the exterior to be attractive and good-looking amongst other compact SUVs. I’ve only had my Escape for two weeks and am impressed with its capabilities. UPDATE: After a year with my Escape S, I’m still happy with my purchase. Of note is the driver’s seat. Though not a power seat, it’s one of the most comfortable I’ve ever used. It made my trip to New Mexico and Colorado a very easy drive. Mileage with the 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine has improved with time also. I’ve been able to get up to 32 mpg on the highway and combined is 26 mpg. Cargo space is more than decent as I’ve had to cart many boxes, tables, and chairs for community projects with more than enough space. I’ve had no problems with the engine, transmission, electronics, air conditioning, and infotainment at all. I’ve kept up with routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotation, filter changes). Service has been done at my dealer and I’ve had no problems there either. If you’re looking for a basic, no frills, fun-to-drive SUV, this is it. I’m looking forward to another year of care-free driving with my 2018 Ford Escape S. UPDATE 2: Here I am, a year and a half with my 2018 Escape S and still motoring on. Everything stated above still stands. One thing I’ve learned to appreciate is the fact that the 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine on my Escape is Flex Fuel capable. While it gets 4 miles less per gallon over all with E85, performance is better because of the higher octane (105). The engine runs smoother also. Plus, it costs 30 to 40 cents per gallon less. It’s a trade off. The 2020 Ford Escape has debuted already and it’s a beautiful vehicle. However, I’m keeping my 2018 Ford Escape another 2 years until the bugs are worked out of the new model. UPDATE 3: Two years and still motoring on! I haven’t had any problems at all with my 2018 Ford Escape S. At 34K+ miles, it’s almost out of warranty and I’m already looking at possibility of getting it a new set of tires. Everything in my previous updates still stand. MPG with E85 has increased to 23 combined, as has the addition of 1.5 MPG with Regular Unleaded. I attribute this to the engine being well broken in. I keep my Escape well maintained: Tire rotations at 5k and oil changes, etc. at 7.5K. Two years later, I still recommend the 2018 Ford Escape S as it has been a reliable vehicle for me.

Buy a new one, not a used one

While perhaps not the best compact SUV on gas, the Ford Escape has consistently been rated overall as one of the best compact SUVs on the market. Initially, I planned to buy a used one as the new ones were considerably more expensive. I purchased a used Escape for $15,000 with 34,000 miles on it that had been part of a rental fleet and within 2 hours after driving it off the lot, it started making noises. I brought it back to the dealership the next day and subsequently drove two more that had also been part of a rental fleet. Each one had issues. That same day, however, the dealership had decided to liquidate what new 2018s there still were on the lot to make room for the 2019s. For just $4,000 more, I bought a brand new 2018, last year's model, and I LOVE it! I got $7,000 off the list since it is last year's model, but it's still a brand-new automobile. The car drives like a dream. My advice to anyone in the market for a new vehicle is to wait until a year end's liquidation sale at the dealership on last year's models. This is when you'll get the most for your money. People don't buy cars in January. Be wary of cars that have been part of a rental fleet. You might get lucky and get a good one, but even though they may have been well-maintained, you don't know how they've been driven. Plus, late model, low mileage vehicles aren't that much less expensive than a new one at year's end. Update: It's been over 3 years since I purchased my Ford Escape and it continues to be a great-driving and reliable vehicle.

My third Escape!

I've leased two Ford Excape and this third one I've purchased. I love this little SUV. Handles great, comfortable seats, great interior, great extras and features. I bought it from Rusty Wallace Ford in Dandrige TN and they are a wonderful dealership to work with both in sales and service. The only thing that was wrong with this car was that the tires felt out of balance and got worse so I took it in and their service dept found that the Michelin tires on it (all four of them) were flawed! Wow! I love Michelin tires so that surprised me. But they ordered 4 new tires and they were there the next day and replaced. Car runs perfect and tires are good, no road noise or vibration. This is a wonderful car for the money.
