Improved Minivan

This is my fifth minivan. These are not the minivans of old. I bought the AVP with some upgrades. Just got back off long trip, got 20 mpg in the city, and 29.5 mpg highway, with 24.7 with a mix situation. After 60000 miles, not one mechanical issue. Big vehicle to get 29 mpg on highway. Just wish it rode a little less bus-like. Has no resale value. Don't understand why such a quality vehicle is subject to such distain. Love it. Used the stow and go seats variable positions for a different need everyday. I love the handling. I love the cab forward design, easy to see the road and park. The ride can be a little bouncy, but not bothersome. I have the base seats but they are very comfortable. I had a long drive at night and can see the road much easier than in a sedan. The best value in a vehicle period. My only complaint is that the transmission wants to shift out and then back down in the hills.

Huge improvement over my 2007 Grand Caravan

Not sure where to start but everything I hated about my 07 is fixed on my 2014 SE 30th anniversary edition with Blacktop option. Better mileage, better ride quality, better looking, much better paint job, and as far as I can tell this new generation (2008-2015) has fixed the rust problem. My 07 started to rust with just over 100,000 miles on it. And the A/C went out. Over $4000 to repair. I've had my new one since june of 2014 and have 10,000 miles on it and it has been great. But don't be fooled by people saying they get 29 MPG. I check it each time at fill up with math and I get on average 18 around town and 24 HWY. the computer is correct about 1/2 the time. You get a lot for the$$ Update 2016, So far so good. The only real problem is the transmission shifting. Not sure if it's going to be a problem later on or is this just how this transmission works. Every once in a while it just jerks into gear. My dealer experience when from terrible to great by changing dealers. I went to a dealer near my home to have a warrantee service and it was awful (Hawk Forest Park IL). My independent mechanic suggester Larry Roesch in Elmhurst and it was a much better experience. Now I have 45,000 on the van I take it to my independent mechanic unless it's recall service. But so far the van has been very reliable, 19 mpg around town and 22-24 on the highway. The tires that came on the van are not very good. Yokohama Avid. Already time to buy new ones. I did however buy Bridgestone BLIZZAK WS80 for winter with rims from Tire Rack. I can't emphasize this enough, GET SNOW TIRES! It was $1100 but WELL worth the money. I figure $1000 is my insurance deductible. These tires are amazing. No need to have an SUV with AWD when you have these tires. I went through almost anything. Plus I have the van with the black (fancy) wheels and taking them off during the winter will save the finish from all the salt in the midwest. I will certainly buy Michelin tires for my summer tires. The last two vans I had I put Michelins on and I got 70,000+ miles out of them and not too bad traction in the snow. The yokohama are a cheep tire and have NO traction in the snow and very little in the wet. A scary tire to have on a vehicle. At 40,000 already time to replace. The radio although works with my iPhone bluetooth and sounds decent could use an upgrade. Small readout for songs and clock is small and difficult to read. All in all the van still looks new, I wash every week, no rust, no leaks, brakes are still good, no complaints. It's a good big van for the money. Not sure If Chrysler is still going to make them now that they have the Pacifica but for a van in the low to mid $20's it's a good value. I have the base LE model with the blacktop package 30th year anniversary edition. 2017 update. Still very reliable. Just oil changes and I replaced the crappy tires that came with the van to Michelins. Big improvement. Still shifting issues with the transmission but nothing major. My only real complaint is the subpar radio. It has Bluetooth and a USB but that's about it. If you are listing to music from an iPod or flash drive via the USB every time you shut the car off and start back up it defaults to the radio often way too loud. I wish it would stay in the USB mode. I have 55k on it now and it might need brakes soon. That's about it. 2018 update. I've owned this vehicle now for 4 years and 81,000 miles. So far it's been very reliable. Only issues so far have been the waring light for the rear hatch door stayed on and the dealer repaired it out of warrantee, but I had the extended warrantee so it was covered. Transmission still shifts oddly at times but dealer checked it out and found nothing wrong. I feel it slips a bit. I do have to take it in next week because the A/C runs without me turning it on. I've replaced the tires with michelins. Still have the original brakes. They still make this model, if you are looking for an inexpensive people hauler this Grand Caravan is a great value. Update 12/18 98,000. Still very reliable. No issues at all. Oil changed every 3000-4000 miles. My mechanic uses a synthetic blend. Gas mileage is about the same. Low to mid 20’s on the highway and high teens around town. Original brakes still although my rotors shake at high speed stops. My mechanic says the pads are fine. Rotors might be slightly warped. Still has original battery. Dodge still sells this model. This is a very long product run for a vehicle. The new Pacifica is much more expensive and I’m sure has much better technology, but for the money I don’t think you will find anything that can handle this much cargo / people. I haul a lot of camera gear and twice a year tow my boat to and from the marina. 18 foot speed. Boat. I don’t think I would tow it cross country but for the short drive it’s fine. A/C seems to be fine now and the transmission is the same. I will have the recommend maintenance done

Great except for Transmission

These vans are great. It's no surprise Chrysler still dominates the minivan market. Front seats are comfortable, Back seats get the job done. Even 2 adults can sit comfortably for shorter journeys. Middle seats are ok, but the headrests are awful. Extremely hard and thin, and at a stupid angle. Fine for younger kids, but not so much for teens or adults. The guy at the dealer almost knocked himself out when showing us the stow n go. Beware the spring loaded headrests. Engine is more than adequate for pulling the weight of the van, but is let down by a rough and unintelligent transmission. Gearing is too short down low, meaning it's always changing around town. When going up hills, you will start to lose speed pretty fast. If cruise control is on, it will drop a gear and FLOOR IT for no reason. If you don't use cruise control and put your foot down, it won't downshift until you reach the top of the hill, when you don't need it to anymore. Very frustrating, not very good for fuel economy either. Don't bother pushing the economy button, the only difference is that it makes the transmission even worse. Gear changes are rough and a jolt can sometimes be felt in the cabin. HOWEVER. Everything else (minus middle headrests as said before) is great. Radio sounds great, dashboard is easy to use and understand, visibility is amazing. Stow and go, minus the jawbreaking headrests is awesome. You can fit almost anything in the back. All in all, if you can look past the Tranny, great car. 8.5/10.

2014 30th Anniversary Edition

I Traded a 2012 GMC Acadia. I drove a Chrysler Town & Country rental while having hail damage repaired on my Acadia. I was highly impressed as were my kids. I decided it was time for comfort rather than over priced SUV. My husband 6'2" fits comfortably. I compared the Grand Caravan to Chrysler T&C, Honda Odessey, Nissan Quest. Ultimately it was the stow and go as well the fact the grand caravan feels like I'm riding higher off the ground than Odessey. You get more bang for your buck with the Grand a Caravan. I bought it brand new 3 months ago with 14 miles on it. Now after a trip across the country with 6 people, I have over 9,000 miles

I bought the SXT with the "Blacktop" pkg which consists of all black interior, special wheels, blacked out trim and rear camera. Since my purchase, I have accumulated 21k miles on the van and so far I'm happy with it. I have had two tire pressure sensors go bad and a rear blend door actuator motor that stuck. Both items were addressed by my dealership under warranty and in a very timely manner. The van handles well, I love the 3.6L V6 both in power and gas mileage. I average 20 in the city, 24 mixed and around 28 on the highway at 70 mph. The only complaint I really have is the ride quality could be better. It's a little on the firm side over sharp small bumps but handles large bumps well and has a good highway ride. I bought the van at a very good price of 21k new. I think it's a great value for that kind of money vs the foreign competition. 9/3/2016- Since my last entry, I've had 1 more tps fault that had to be reset by the dealer, an airbag sensor under the passenger seat had to be replaced and a rear gate latch that kept causing a gate open warning light, all repaired under warranty. Thankfully, my dealers service dept. is very good (Columbia Chrysler, Columbia,TN). I'm still happy with my van even though I've had a few small problems. I would purchase another as of now. 3/6/2017- Still happy with my Dodge van. I've had no more problems since my last entry. Everything is functioning properly, paint and interior materials are holding up well against the barrage of 2 15 year olds. I'm looking forward to possibly purchasing a new Chrysler Pacifica in the future. Well done FCA

Best minivan on the market

This is THE minivan. If you are on the market for a family hauler with plenty of space, reasonable comfort and performance, all at a great price, do not hesitate. This van is priced right (get advantage of some discount) for what you received. We have been driving the caravan for the last 4 years and 62000 miles with no major issue. I test drive the Chrysler Pacifica while waiting for my oil change to be done and I did not find a bit difference in driving comfort or drivability. We have been on several long trips, car is comfortable and I feel safe driving at high speed on highway. Plenty of power available for passing, the V6 is responsive. The car held up well to the abuse it has been exposed to, including long trips with two kids, loading it with construction material and heavy loads. As long as they made the Grand Caravan at a decent price, I will keep one in the family. Update Jan 2019: van is still going strong, no major issue or repair so far.

The mechanics of the vehicle are excellent. The gas mileage is impressive on the highway. I normally average 31 mpg. on long trips. The ride is stiff and you feel the road more than in Dodge minivans of the past. No service problems to date. NOTE* (Added 1 year after original review) Still no mechanical problems and gas mileage on the highway is still 31/32 mpg with cruise control. I've added a Kenwood HD/bluetooth radio, and a backup camera to the original equipment (total installed $600) and upgraded to all weather Michelin tires ($700) to make the van exactly what I need.

The R/T is very cool... It is a very sharp (masculine.. which appeals to both of us - me female .. my other half male) and while minivans are not reputed to be fun to drive this one has a sport/road trip suspension that makes if very responsive... We have owned this van for a year now. We like it very much. Great space and storage, excellent mileage, so far very good in all weather conditions. The transmission makes a nerve wracking clunk noise soemtimes. May just be normal for this vehicle but it will be something we look into soon.

BOUGHT THE DODGE GRAND CARAVAN IN 2014

I've had Dodge products in the past that were not reliable but this van has been terrific. I bought it new in August of 2014, had it almost 4 years now, with 52K in mileage and I haven't had a single problem with it. The acceleration is amazing but the transmission is a bit clunky in the way it shifts.....nothing defective or wrong with it...just never shifted smoothly but that's a design issue. The ride is good, not as good as some other mini vans but overall it's a nice place to be with your family and a lot of gear for a long road trip. I realistically get around 30 MPH on the highway...so it's great in that respect. You can't go wrong with purchasing one of these if you need a minivan at a good price.

My 2008 Grand Caravan was better

I had a 2008 Grand Caravan SXT that I LOVED. It saved my life in a terrible accident. I had a 2010 Journey after the van that I loved. I got rid of the Journey and got a 2010 Sebring that I loved. I decided to go back to a van and purchased a 2014 Grand Caravan SE with Rear Entertainment Package. I liked my 2008 better... I have 6000 miles on the 2014 and the blower is making a grinding noise. I liked the 3.8 in the other van better than the 3.6 I have now. I really wished I would have got another SXT. The SE has nothing compared to the SXT. I do love the mygig radio. Fuel mileage is averaging 24 MPG. I would purchase another van but would never get another SE to save a few dollars.

Can't Wait to Trade it in

We bought this minivan after a long trip from California to Florida in Dodge Journey with two kids. I did my research and up to this point our Journey had been a great car so we decided to get a Grand Caravan. We bought it used in March of 2019 with 51,000 miles on it. We got the SE 30th anniversary with backup camera, dvd entertainment system and uconnect xm radio. We have since put 20,000 miles on it going on trips and dragging the kids around town. After not even two years of ownership all I can say is I'm happy I got the extended warranty. Pros - It is very easy to drive and gets great gas mileage for the size. I love the dvd system for the kids and the stow and go is wonderful. It handles snow really well for what it is and it looks sharp with the navy blue paint and dark grey wheels. It has tons of pickup and has no problem passing on the interstate, even when packed down with people, dogs and luggage. It is easy to get in and out of and it has a comfortable ride. Cons - Reliability is awful. I will never, ever buy another dodge again. Right after we bought it, while it still had temp tags on it the oil cooler went out and dumped oil everywhere. I couldn't put oil in it fast enough so to be safe it had to be towed to the shop. Luckily the warranty covered it otherwise it would've been $1100. At 70,000 miles I started to notice a hard shift in the transmission and a whiny noise upon acceleration. I took it into the dealer and it needed a full transmission replacement at 70,000 miles. I am still blown away. The other major con is the cheap plastic parts on it. The rubber piece on the end of the gear shift broke off, molding around the driver window flew off on the interstate. Overall, we love the van and it has been a decent car to us but we are counting down the days until we can trade it in for a Sienna. Unfortunately, the dodge has no resale value so we are trying to pay it down first.

Eight defects in 4.5 Months

This is our 5th Grand Caravan and second 2014. The van is a disaster. 9 times in for service. Heating stopped working properly, U-Connect mic didn't work, U-Connect doesn't stream properly, car lost power, car's MIL went on while losing power but the computer didn't "recognize the error", all the dashboard controls have flashed, burning rubber smell , and the low tire pressure goes on and off at will. The vehicle has recently been in the service department for 18 days straight, they keep saying they "can't replicate the problem". Chrysler says they are just going to have to "release" the vehicle and have our family drive a death trap. Warranty and service on these vehicles are worth nothing.

As an owner of 4 Caravans since 1985 I was seeking to replace my present Caravan with a 2014 "Grand Caravan." Much to my chagrin Dodge has a base seat in all but the SXT which has no height adjustment. This is not Grand at all as th tall driver does not have legroom. This I see has been noted by other consumer reviews. You can get a power seat that has decent adjustments, but your going to have to pony up serious dollars to get the SXT model. I contacted the Dodge Customer Assistance Center and this is their response,Dear Art: Thank you for contacting the Chrysler Customer Assistance Center with your product improvement suggestion, however Dodge only works thru consumer forums. Thanks Dodge

I loved my minivan when I first purchased it, however, I have only owned it for 3 years and the issues are starting to pile up! The automatic sliding doors keep having to be fixed due to the plastic piece on the track falling apart and the plastic pieces on my dash around my stereo had to be super glued back on.

This is our 4th Dodge minivan since 1985. Each van continues to improve in every category. This vehicle rides like a limousine, smooth, quiet, little wind or road noise, point it down the road and it goes. Friends of ours drive Siennas and Odesseys, always raving about their vehicles as do most magazines and product review boards, until they ride in our Caravan. "Rides just like our Honda, how much did you pay ? At least we have a vacuum in ours". The Sto & Go seats can't be beat by any manufacturer. Just had the rear brakes worked on this summer. This is the 1st repair on this vehicle.

The 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan transmission failed in 10/2021 with only 40,500 miles. This transmission is sealed and does not even come with a dip stick. A complete failure before the fluid was even due to be changed. This is why people don't / shouldn't buy American cars. Oh yes warranty just expired.

Dodeg Grand Caravan Stow n Go

The Stow n Go package is great for configuring the vehicle for different tasks. The seats disappear under the floor with very little effort and can be put back with the same ease. They aren't the most luxurious seats, but they are adequate. The down side is that the road noise and vibration are very noticeable. Great car, except for that.

Have test driven both the Odessey and Sienna. The Grand Caravan compares favorably to the high priced Honda and Toyota models in all categories. Better gas mileage and better acceleration than either of these two, even though the Japanese models are higher rated. The Caravan is very quiet at highway speeds and the ride is limo quality. Reliability has also been a strong point. Over 2 years now and only routine maintainence. The Dodge dealer has taken care of all maintainence work along with complementary oil changes. Try matching this service at one of the Japanese dealers.

Falling apart

Our 14 Grand Caravan started off okay, it rides very truck/bus like but has very comfortable cockpit seats. Our problem with this van was shoddy parts. We lost 3 (three) trim panels on the outside of the van while driving at highway speed. 3 panels at 3 separate times. The nifty rolling cover that covers the center console broke apart, the panel on the drawer under the center console fell off, it developed a bad oil leak, as well as a bad exhaust leak and therefore wouldn't pass state safety inspection. The A/C struggled to keep the van cool in the summer even when after having it recharged, and the plastics on the outside of the van yellowed bad resulting in the vehicle being very unsafe to drive at night. We averaged about 18mpg in the city. This will be the last Mopar/Chrysler vehicle we will ever own.

There's a reason why they offer a Lifetime Powertrain Warranty on these vehicles. You're going to nee the tranny replaced in addition to multiple recalls. We have the lifetime warranty and our vehicle has been at the dealership for a total time of a year. The van is currently at the dealership on a separate lot so they don't have to fix the car and the van has been there since May 2023 and it is currently August 17 2023. I cannot believed there isn't a class action lawsuit yet.

I bought my Grand Caravan in June 2019 with 66K miles on it, and I've had a near-perfect experience with it. I got the SE 30th Anniversary finished off in granite crystal metallic. Driving this van, it rides very nicely and the V6 has A LOT of power. I had no trouble passing or merging onto the highway. The transmission is clunky and unrefined which is common for these vans. That was probably my biggest complaint about it. I will say that the engine can get loud when pushed, but that was something that never bothered me. It does very well in the snow without snow tires since it's heavy so it stays planted to the road. My 30th Anniversary had the touchscreen with a backup camera and the rear entertainment system, both of which were really appreciated. There was always plenty of space for the family and we used the stow n go all the time. The seats are pretty comfortable for long trips. For maintenance, just the basics like brakes, tire rotations, oil changes, and so on. The only big repair I had was replacing the transmission cooler lines. Our ownership was cut short due to an inexperienced driver pulling out in front of us on a blind curve with no time to stop, thus leading to a crash, and our insurance company rendering it a total loss. Had it not been totaled, this van could have lasted many years. But overall, the Grand Caravan is a solid family minivan that's spacious and capable as a daily driver.
