From a Lincoln to a Chevy

Raymond Stewart, 11/16/2019

If you have heard the rumor that Lincolns are a very smooth ride, with decent mileage and pretty good on service, you heard right. What you also need to know is that the Chevy Traverse is, in my opinion & experience, as comparable in the ride & the service, with one distinction, much affordable than the Lincoln!

MEETS AND EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS - UPDATE #2

2020 Chevrolet Traverse RS 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 9A)

After 6 months and 7,000 km, I am really happy with my 2020 RS. PRO's: Amazing amount of space - I keep the 3rd row of seats down most of the time, and the amount of trunk space this provides is incredible. More than any other vehicle I have owned. Decent economy - I've averaged 8.9 ltrs/100 km so far. That compares very favourably to the 11.7 I used to get with the 2014 Jeep Wrangler 4-door that the Chev replaced. Comfort ride - Actually, a very comfortable ride; better than my neighbour's Toyota Highlander and another's Ford Explorer. Really awesome on the highway. Also, good fit and finish. Plenty of helpful technology. Easy to get in and out of. CONS: The worst is Auto Stop. It's so frustrating in city traffic, but not a problem in the rural area I live in. The heated steering wheel gets too hot. (I'm going to get the dealership to check this at the next service.) That's it! So far, the Chev is a winner. Oh...and it handles the snowy conditions of a Canadian winter much better than expected. I have winter tires on, of course, but the roads in the area I live in are the last to get ploughed, but just switching the drive setting to 4x4 and even 6" of snow doesn't bother the Chev. I guess I'll update this in a few months. UPDATE: After 11 months and 13,500 km, I can still report that the Traverse both meets and exceeds my original expectations. Gas consumption has averaged 9.4 litres/100 km, including several long trips with a 2,000lb trailer in tow. I have become quite used to the Auto-Stop feature and it no longer bothers me at all. That said, I still don't like it! There really needs to be an override button. I bought a Curt Echo Bluetooth electric brake controller and despite my misgivings, it works perfectly. I borrowed a neighbour's 4,000 cargo trailer (equipped with electric brakes) and towed it for several hundred kms. The controller worked really well and using the cellphone app to adjust it is very easy. I would give the Traverse 5 stars if it wasn't for the high purchase price and the lack of an override for the Auto-Stop. It's comfortable, very spacious and - so far - very reliable. I totally recommend this vehicle. UPDATE December1, 2022: It's now 26 months since I purchased the Traverse, and with 38,700 kms on the clock, it continues to be an awesome vehicle. Average gas consumption has improved to 8.6 litres/100 kms. I did have to make one tiny warranty claim... The chrome strip on the trunk, between the tail lights, started to lose its coating and was replaced by the dealership. The all-wheel system works really well in the snowy Canadian winter, especially with decent snow tires fitted. Bottom line... I'm still happy and looking forward to several years of ownership. UPDATE June 5, 2023 2 1/2 years and 47,000 KMS and the Traverse is purring along nicely. Overall fuel economy has improved to 7.9 litres/100 km. Summer rims & tires are back on and tire noise is a distant hum again. Hopefully, I'll be back with another update later in the year. UPDATE December 6, 2023 After 3 yrs and 3 mos of ownership and 53,000+ kms, our Traverse is still running perfectly. Absolutely no complaints. The winter tires are back on, and while they're a little noisier than the summer tires, the ride is smoother with the smaller rims and higher-profile tires. Overall gas consumption is an amazing 7.6 lts/100 kms (31 mpg), including a fair amount of towing a 3,500 lbs utility trailer. I'll be back with another update next summer. UPDATE June 9, 2025 It's now 4 1/2 years and 72,000 KMS on the clock. (I missed a 2024 update; everything was still running perfectly.) Gas mileage is still great at 7.9 lts/100kms. However, electronic gremlins have started creeping in... During the 2023/2024 winter, the rearview camera started cutting out in cold weather. As winter progressed, the camera system completely stopped working. In February 2024, a new rear camera was fitted under warranty. Everything was back to normal again. Then...as the 2024/2025 winter kicked in, that same problem developed. After three trips to the dealership and over CAD$3,000 in extended warranty claims - cameras, video processing module, etc. - it's still not working properly. The electronics company technician now thinks it's a cable issue and needs to have the vehicle for 2 or 3 days to figure it all out. In the meantime, the system works just fine on warmer days as the summer gets going. BUT wait...another issue has developed. The rear pipes of the AC system have started leaking! As the fluid leaks away, the AC stops working. A couple of re-fills/pressurizations solve the problem temporarily. I'm waiting to get confirmation that this, too, will be covered by the extended warranty. Despite all this, we still love the Traverse and have no desire to trade it in for some time yet. It's comfortable, spacious, great on gas and mostly reliable.

I read some of the "negative" reviews, and feel some buyers did not do their research or a proper test drive. This is a comfortable large suv with good sightlines and great road holding. Steering weight and vehicle tracking is darn near perfect. Not too light, not too heavy. And the Traverse holds a straight line without constant little adjustments, something I found very annoying in a Hyundai Palisade I test drove. Cargo space behind the third row is good, with the third row folded, it's very large, and with a both rows folded, it's positively huge....almost 100 cubic feet. It has a real transmission, 9 speeds, and shifts effortlessly with no hesitation and no clunks. I have owned several brands of suvs including Subaru and Toyota Highlanders. Both were high quality vehicles. The Traverse is the best vehicle I have ever owned. After only two days, everything was intuitive. The infotainment/information system works very well. The Sirius/XM radio (Bose system with 10 speakers) is audio pleasure. One of the reviewers thought the Traverse was very difficult to see out of. She stated she was 5 ft 5. I'm six feet and actually believe the view out the front and all around the vehicle is excellent. I have no problem changing lanes left to right, and being able to confirm that there is nothing in the blind spot. The BSM is fine, but all of them only light up when a vehicle is very close. I can easily check visually with no problem whatsoever. Seats are very supportive and comfortable even on a long drive. Armrests are positioned properly. Remote start is a plus in our cold western NY winter, and the Traverse heats up fast and provides could climate control options. Cell phone paired effortlessly, and the garage door opener button was also easy to activate. If you are looking for an suv with a large cargo capacity, I don't think you can find better than the Traverse. You can seat 7 or 8. I have the second row captains seats. I also recommend the leather interior. Drive it and decide for yourself.

Great reliable vehicle, rain, snow , hail, or sleet...this ride gets you anywhere you need to go. Trecked right through heavy snow no slipping or sliding. Had chains but didn't need them. Never lost traction. It's got lots of room. The storage is smaller but efficient. Back seats folding down for extended storage is great. Best fuel consumption recorded on our system is 40mpg. 18-22mpg city. It's got pep...its got torque...just a well rounded vehicle. Have loved owning it.

I love my 2020 Traverse but the brakes sound like they want to drag at times. The car has been back to dealer 2 times but of course the brakes didn't make any noise. I just wondered if anybody else has had this issue? I am stopping on dry pavement so its not because of that ice or snow. It stops but so noisy at times. weird its good mostly. the service department did a test and all was good but didnt actually look at brakes. I guess that will be my next step

This is my first GM vehicle, and most likely last one! I paid nearly $50,000 for a brand new Chevrolet travers. After 1 month of driving the front hood started to show several paint chips. I took it to the dealer and they said that this was due road debris and tried sell me a deflector! I tried to explain that my commute home, work and grocery has not change since 10 years and I never seen this road debris issue in my Chrysler 200 for the previous 10 years! No warranty, this is my cost. The paint keeps chipping away so easily! 2 years in I hear a noise coming from the front wheels. Very quiet, only audible when driving slow on a very smooth road. It turend out to be the engine mounting bracket coming loose! The dealer said that it was a common issue and they fixed it by replacing it and re-tigthing all the bolts and perform a calibration. This time under warranty! Warranty or not, 2 years and 20,000 miles in the engine mount should not come apart! Not on a 50k GM vehicle. Now I do understand why people prefer to buy German cars.

2020 Chevy Traverse, mileage 24,600. I bought a new chevy vehicle for reliability and quality. I am not looking only for features but reliability. This weekend I took a trip with my mother and kids and after 240 miles, I got a message about the Battery Saver feature and needed attention, I was able to make it to the dealership which sent me to a certified shop across the street due to their service department being closed (weekend). Well, they ran the computers and found the battery was no longer good and replaced it. Next day I turned on the truck, only to drive it for 10 minutes to give time to park safely. Battery drained again, had to buy a new one. Not to mention to remove the battery you will need your good set of ratchet with the extension. So truck drained 2 new batteries in less than 24 hours. Not able to drive it at all!!! it is disappointing having to deal with it with 2 kids and an elder mother. Thank God I made it home and it broke down right there as soon as I got to my mom's house. Dealership states it's going to take about a week for them to get to it and let me know what is happening. The shop I went to said the computer reading just show them the battery was bad and nothing more. I am frustrated because I don't have a vehicle, insurance will cover a rental if accident but there was no accident. I work and not easy to find time away from work to resolve how can I get a rental thru the warranty.

We have owned the car for 6 months and are very happy. We traded in a 2019 Subaru Ascent which was awful. This is our 2nd Traverse and regrettably we traded in that Traverse to purchase the Ascent. Traverse is comfortable and there is low cabin noise. I have no complaints on how it handles and the AWD performed every good in the snow and climbs our hills easily. Visibility is good. Love the 360 vision. It tracks straight and find there is little effort needed for driving. The space is plentiful to meet our needs. MPG for the car has been good for its size. City driving, we average 19 mpg and only got less than that (18 mpg) once. Love the entire steering wheel is heated and it warms quick. Heated/ventilated seats no complaints. Four stars because; 1) Need more cup holders in rear. 2) More shelving in front would be nice 3) Access to 3rd row is only on passenger side 4) Tranny can search for gears occasionally 5) No easy shut off for auto stop. You can shut it off by going to L gear and using the + on shifter bring the car to L9 for city driving but a one switch shut off would be better.

And no matter what Chevy wants to tell you, those are now cupholders on the 2nd row doors. The lack of cupholders in a 7 passenger SUV is irritating at best. The fact that only the driver window is auto up and down is also irritating as is the fact you cannot shut off the auto start. I have been in base model Hyundai cars that have these features. Being in a Premier trim level Traverse and not having auto up on the windows is embarrassing. All in all it is a nice ride but there are a lot of little things that add up to that fact I cannot wait to get rid of this car and wish I had gone another direction.

The roomiest vehicle you'll ever own. They are the size of a Tahoe but doesn't sit as high as a Tahoe. I love this vehicle. I would highly recommend it to anyone with kids or when going on vacations. There's so much room. It also drives and rides very smoothly.

Fits adults in 1st, 2nd, & 3rd row at same time

So far vehicle has been great, have had no problems 2020 basic trim bench seat model & it has almost 8,000miles on it. Even basic model looks classy with lights around handles & everywhere in cab at night. Love the lock system to get in or out without keys. My adult size boys all fit in 3rd row & live in grandmother has no problem getting in or out. Vehicle sits up much higher then vans we tried that was practically on the road with no clearance. This was a must for me as my old van would get caught up on everything & hit ice chunks that had fallen off semis in front of me or scratch trying to get in some alleys or parking lots that was higher then roads. Other vans we looked at had similar ground clearance. With the traverse i love that the seats dont sit on the floor at an angle Similar vehicles all had these small no padding seats on the floor & had you positioned in a V shape leaned back so your knees was up to your head height so they could say they have 3rows & still my kids feet couldnt fit facing forward with having a person in 1st 2nd & 3rd row they was all cockeyed even the vans had this problem only made for car seats not real families. The traverse with the bench seat was only vehicle we found under $30k with as low miles used or new that could fit adults in every row with legs out straight & feet out straight. Seats are plenty thick with padding as well & im averaging 25mpg. I do a lot of town driving so if you live in country could even get better ratings as ive seen mine up in the 35mpg on long trips & as low as 11mpg with aggressive driving. Just think if your buying family vehicle those kids dont stay small very long they grow fast & we quickly realized after owning a van with only 2 kids We needed something different. Those kids have friends & cousins & we often have our parents with us or our own adult siblings so 2nd & 3rd row comfortability became a main priority.

We traded in our 2016 Chevy Tahoe LT for a 2020 Traverse LT. All I can say is this will be our last Chevy purchase. While the vehicle is roomy, easy to get in and out of, and rides very smooth; that's about where the good ends. While we had a leather package in our Tahoe and went to cloth I was amazed at how many more downgrades Chevy has introduced to the LT line. First major issue is they took Bluetooth messaging notification s out of their vehicles. This is a vehicle staple nowadays. So the only way to know if and who has sent you a text is to check your phone. There is no "collision warning" light in the dash, the driver side window is the only auto window, and to control the rear air you have to go through several windows in entertainment system as they removed the controls. The screen in the instrument panel also always reset to a home screen that can't be customized as I liked to keep it on music so I wasn't having to look over to the radio. The traverse looks good and rides well but overall feels like a waste of money. I wish I would of kept my older Tahoe or looked at other brands like Ford, Toyota, or Jeep as they seem to give you more value as a whole in the vehicle for your money.

Just purchased a High Country Traverse 2020. I love every option and the over all build. I also have a 2010 Traverse that I bought new loaded and love it. I plan on keeping it at least 5 more years. It has been the best running and dependable vehicle I have ever owned. I normally only keep a vehicle for 7 years but I should be able to get double that with the 2010. Solid reliable and comfortable vehicle. I am 63.

I purchased mine used a few months back. I needed to upgrade to something that would hold my family size of 6 comfortably and could tow our pop up camper. I looked at the Ford Explorer and I personally felt overall the Traverse had more leg room and space/storage space all around for me and my family. I was lucky enough to find the LT model with the tow package that allows me to tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is perfect for my pop up camper. This vehicle lacks no power is full of space and If you don't have a lead foot, I've actually been able to get over 30mpg on the highway with this beast. I'm sure like most vehicles there will be bad reviews for this vehicle as well, however if I've learned anything about buying vehicles over the years, it's buy what fits your needs and do the basic maintenance. All vehicles have issues and not everyone takes care of them as they should.

Extremely Poor Visibility

I test drove this vehicle in a leather trim and although it is just okay in comfort and did like the ride quality and power train feel of it, the main reason why I passed on it is due to it's very poor visibility. I personally could not even see the front of the vehicle and the sides and specially the back it is terrible. I felt like it is really easy to get into an accident with this SUV and I felt unsafe for carrying my family around in it. Cameras and sensors don't do the driving for you and one of the main things we must use as the driver is instinct and the best thing that helps with this is a very well designed vehicle with large clear windows. Being able to park this particular vehicle was also a problem for me because it feels like I'm going to hit whatever is in the very back or something or someone on the side of the car. It is really hard to see. I am 5,5 and even when I adjusted the driver's seat all the way up I still could not see where the front of the car ends. I just don't understand why American car companies still fail at this today in the year 2020.

Perfect other than cargo space

Car is awesome in every way except the lack of cargo/trunk space. I chose it due to largest 3rd row with leg room but they could’ve added more space for groceries/luggage, et al.

I had this as a rental and really liked it, but there were definitely some areas where it fell short. At 5’10” I sat very comfortably in the first and second rows. I had at least 6-7 inches of headroom. In the front there are plenty of storage options to keep your things organized and the center console is pretty deep. Same thing with the second row. 3rd row is tight. I think it has the upgraded Bose audio and it sounded pretty good. It also had a rear view camera mirror which I found to be very helpful when I had tall items in the back. I find most vehicles in this segment have a multitude of cup holders and this car had very few. The cargo area is very large even with the 3rd row up and there is extra storage under the floor. 2nd and 3rd row fold down flat so you can fit big items inside. One area I feel it falls short is interior materials. The upper dash and door panels are all hard plastic. I found myself resting my arm there and it wasn’t very comfortable. The biggest issue I had was the safety technology this vehicle has. I was going 85 down the highway ab to pass someone and I looked over my shoulder and there was nobody there for at least half a mile. I looked again and the blind spot indicator was lit up so I swerved back into the other lane. There was nobody there, so I guess the car can sense ghosts. Kind of scary for that to happen because I could have crashed. It’s a pretty good car overall but the safety features are why it only earns a 3 star for me.
