Back in October 2001, my dad bought a Olympic White Extended Cab 5.3 LS 2001 Silverado and we have had it ever since. I received this car as my first car in the Summer of 2013 (I got it when I was 16, now I am 18) and it has been since the day it came off the lot. Overall, it has been very reliable, it has had a transmission replaced under warranty, around 115k mi, the oil pan began to leak and the water pump was replaced, 140k mi the fuel pump was replaced and thats really all that has been major with it. Just basic oil changes every 5-7.5k miles and fluid changes and it is still running like a charm. Its fast, comfortable, easy to maneuver and it still looks good 14 years later!

Reviewing on behalf of my father. Dad picked up his 2001 Silverado 9 years ago in August. It has the 4.8, the LS trim level, and is 2WD with a short bed. It has been nothing short of reliable since day one. He bought it with 70K, and it now has over 218K. Despite the dreaded piston slap when warming it up on cold mornings, the engine runs flawlessly and like it has 18,000 miles, not 218,000. Other than synthetic oil changes every 5,000 miles, the only under-hood maintenance has been a new battery, washer fluid container, belts & hoses, idler pully, and a tune-up over 100,000 miles ago. That's it. It will need a new water pump soon, but that's a cheap and easy fix. The 4L60-E transmissions aren't known to last forever, but, knock on wood, the one in ours is still running right along. This truck's biggest achilles heal has been the brake lines. These early GMT-800 trucks are notorious for the brake lines rusting out due to bad/cheap undercoating from GM. We ordered new stainless steel lines and installed them ourselves. No problems since. We just finally revamped the suspension around 215K with new shocks, ball joints, and tie rods. It now handles the bumps in the roads much better. Besides normal wear and tear, the interior has held up pretty good. Build quality isn't the best, there are plenty of shakes and rattles in the cabin, but I think it's functional and laid out nicely. All in all, this truck has served us well. It's no powerhouse, it doesn't have any fancy options, but it has been reliable as dirt. And there's nothing like a good old fashioned pushrod V8 under the hood.

This is an almost perfect truck. Comfort, handsome design, and a combined mileage 17.5 MPG. Powerful precise steering, automatic transfer case. Almost perfect. The bad, cold start knock (annoying). Weak intermedate steering shaft (replaced). Known for bad fuel guage sending units (hasn`t happened yet). Nothing's perfect and the good more than offsets the bad. Best truck I ever drove. What`s bad, the bad is silly stuff GM should have got right in the first place.

I bought my 2001 Pewter LS Silverado new and have 97,000 original miles on it. It has never been garage kept. I live in NJ and there is not a spot of rust on the truck and the paint still shines. I run it through the car wash 1 to 2 times a month and get the wax treatment that is included. I have only replaced the fuel pump and recently the thermostat besides the norm. I continually get offers for the truck and complements from other pickup owners. The truck has no rattles and runs great. the door speakers have just started buzzing, but I'm sure it's because of age and banging of the doors for 13 years. My only complaint has been tires. I'm on my 3rd set of Bridgestones that are 16/60/ 275's

21 years later still a great truck

I bought this truck in 2018 from second owner with only 145k on it (2022 only has 167K). It still had original plugs, wires, and shocks which I replaced. It still ran and looked perfect even with the old parts. Anyone knowledgeable about 4x4 Chevy's knows 5100 model Bilstein shocks are the way to go on Chevy's. Whether empty on highway, or driving offroad, this thing rides and handles great with a minor shock upgrade (about $80 each). The only issues I had with this truck were the parking brake fell apart at 155k, which was not an expensive fix (they are inside the rear brake rotors). As with most the early 5.3, 4.3, and 4.8's it has a little bit of a cold start knock or piston slap. The newer 2008 1500 5.3 I had at work was the same but neither were bad or a concern. These 1st gen 5.3's were originally 295 HP I believe, a bit less than the modern 5.3's. The fact that in 2022 Chevy still makes a 5.3L (it has 50+ more HP) says something about the bullet proof small block Chevy motor. For my 2001, I added a 3-inch Cat back Magnaflow exhaust with a dry K&N air filter when I bought it to boast the power a bit. Today, (Feb 2022) this is still a solid running truck, on or offroad, towing or empty. The larger exhaust and K&N helped it breathe better so it has plenty of power for this era of 5.3L. It still has the original 4L60-E 4-speed automatic. These are bulletproof transmissions IF YOU MAINTAIN THEM. As long as you keep clean coolant in the radiator (also cools tranny fluid), and drop the tranny pan every 40k or so to drain the fluid and clean the screen, these are 200 to 300k trannies. Overall, I have always been a Chevy guy and this truck has been great. It rides smoother than the competitors, no rattles or leaks even after 21 years, it still does not require adding oil between changes. I am reluctantly looking at getting a 2010 - 2016 3/4-ton model, but I am having a hard time parting with this old 2001 1500 4x4.

Camshaft and lifter failure at 71K! Pitted cam lobe evident once exposed along with a worn valve lifter. Was diligently maintained including oil changes, routine servicing, etc. Independent repair shop says defective parts were installed at manufacture. Took 70K miles to manifest itself hence the time bomb. GM says off warranty so no help or assistance possible with $4500 repair costs. Also a front shimmy since it was new has been troublesome and apparently is not fixable per Chevy, Les Schwab Tires, and independent repair shop. CD player failed at 45K miles, never bothered to repair. Third new Chevy truck I have owned and it's definitely the last.

I’m embarrassed that this is what Americans are producing. About every 1.5 months that I take it in for something broken. Here is the list of problems: rear leaf spring pads, squeak under accel, leaking front diff housing, selective operation of heated seats, lumbar support moves w/ door open& engine running(honest), service 4wd light, engine missfire(bad fuel injectors & press.reg.). What bothers me is most of these problems the service writers say "oh that's common, we have a fix for that." Thanks for working to improve your product GM. The engine still shudders/clunks @ idle & uses oil.

Great Truck. I drive a good number of miles a year and I’m very pleased with this truck. I believe that the 2WD has a much smoother ride that the Z71 (4WD), and since I have little use of the 4WD, that was an easy choice. The 5.3 L V8 has more than enough power to jump up and pass a truck on a two lane road. The heated, leather, power everything seats also are nice. I put a K&N air filter in it the first week I bought it and run Castrol Syntec 20W-50 year round. I have had no problems.

I don't have a single complaint about my 01 Silverado Ext. Cab 1500 2wd 4.8L . Bought used from Budget car sales in 01 with 16k miles have had no major repairs other than water pump, radiator , and steering rack . It has been a faithful work truck for 20+ years it now has 407k miles . I live in Arizona and the heat takes a toll on vehicles here. The plastic dash and many other plastics on interior have crack and deteriorated from heat . I have changed the spark plugs 3 times never once changed transmission fluid or fluid in rear differential . The 283 motor is probably one of chevy's finest v8 motors ever. Just for the heck of it I posted it on offer up for $2000 and had people tripping over each other to buy it . I would honestly go out get in my truck right now and drive it anywhere without worry . Best truck ever . Definitely got my money's worth and then some!

We owned an 89 Chevy pickup and loved it, even at 110k miles, it still ran great. A very tight machine. We made the mistake in assuming Chevy would continue the tradition when we bought the '01. Engine makes a knocking sound from day one that the dealership mechanic "couldn't hear". Makes the sound to this day. Performance is sluggish and you'd figure if you have slow performance, at least the gas mileage would be good. Wrong. 12- 15mpg. I guess we got spoiled with the '89 p/u truck; wish we still had it.

Bought the truck as-is, needed a few minor repairs that I did myself. Replaced the radiator, ignition cylinder and heater blower motor resistor circuit. All were not very difficult, I'm not a mechanic. I'm very impressed with the way it rides. The 4.8 V8 engine seems great, smooth, quiet and plenty of power. I like the truck doesn't seem as high as Dodge Ram of the same year, makes for easier loading. It sure doesn't feel like it has 177k miles on it. It's for occasional use, based on other reports I've seen the high mileage shouldn't be a concern. I like that the truck is not over-designed, I prefer the styling of this generation over anything else. Was asked to update the review. Don't drive the truck much, 3 years since I bought it in 9/2013 and doesn't quite have 180k miles. Once when my son borrowed it and was idling waiting in line it stalled, started back up fine. That and the emergency brake light sometimes doesn't work are the only troubles I can think of. I changed the oil/filter. Easy to do once you get under, I had to remove the driver's side running (tube?.. round not flat) to do so. Engine still runs like new. Asked again to update the review. Unfortunately due to a job change I traded it in along with my SUV for a large SUV. The silver lining is my son bought it from the dealership as-is. Since he's had it he's fixed several minor things I didn't bother with. He loves the truck, I'd guess now around 188k miles. The only somewhat major but inexpensive repair was the plastic coupler that goes over the heater core valves in the firewall broke with some of it inside the hose. Fortunately he was close to home and didn't lose much antifreeze. He fixed that himself, once again YouTube was a great resource. He used to have a Dodge Ram with the 5.9 V8, the Silverado gets much better fuel economy. I now have a Honda Pilot, the fuel economy is hardly better than the Silverado. I'm planning to go back - may trade in the Honda for an older small car and full size Chevy or GMC pickup truck. Update - my son had this truck for over 210k miles. Rust of course, unfortunately caused one of the shocks to break loose. He was still driving it, has another truck now. Sold this Silverado to someone local. I've seen it at least once. I ended up trading in my Honda Pilot for a 2002 Silverado in 2019.

I BOUGHT USED WITH 15K ON THE CLOCK. NO PROBLEMS EXCEPT FOR A TICKING NOISE ON ACCELERATION, NOT COLD START KNOCK SOME TALK ABOUT. THE DEALER TRIED TO FIX THE NOISE BY REPLACING SENSORS BUT NO LUCK. GM TOLD ME IT IS A NORMAL NOISE DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE PISTONS WHICH HAVE A SHORT SKIRT TO HAVE LESS MASS THEREFORE BETTER GAS MILEAGE. THEY TOLD MR TO PUT MY MIND AT EASE, THEY WOULD GIVE ME AN EXTENDED 6 YR/100K WARRANTY ON THE ENTIRE ENGINE. I HAVE THIS IN WRITING PLUS IT IS TRANSFERRABLE. I MUST SAY THE TICK NOISE DOES NOT AFFECT ANYTHING, AT LEAST NOW. i HAVE 27K ON IT NOW.

We sold our 2001 Z71 after just 8000 miles. After having it in the shop every two weeks for 8 months, we decided to unload it. We took a $10,000 loss on it, but the F150 we then reluctantly bought turned out to be our best vehicle ever. Gas mileage was also poor at 12/14 and it didn't have much power for a V8.

I know 2019s are out and I've just purchased a 2001 Z71 LS 1500 extended cab. No, this18 year-old truck is not anywhere close to new but this is very solid and smooth compared with my 1997 2WD Silverado. It fits like a glove since its controls are a near photocopy of the 1997. The 5.3L has good power though i won't claim it's impressive. The truck shifts nicely and the underbody is aging well. I'm hoping to keep this on the road for 10+ more years and I think it can make it.

First off, it is a 2001 silverado 1500 LT extended cab 4 door Z71 with Onstar. We bought this truck used at 176K miles and have since put it 10,000 miles on it. It is real comfortable and fun to drive and it has plenty of power. I put some 33 inch maxxis bigohrn tires on it and it went to 10-12 mpg which really sucks down the gas. However, the 4wd system is great for offroading. Only had some minor stuff to replace like the universal and the brakes. The truck can be easily modded to make it look and perform better, which is a plus. I plan on keeping this truck for as long as possible, and i am confident that it will keep performing

I love my '01 chevy silverado 1500, its getting up there in miles has 233950 still runs better than any ford i have owned. only problem is that the oil pan and rear main seal leak i dont have extra money to fix but we havent had any major problems. we replaced the starter wen out once at 205xxx miles but that wasnt a big deal. no tranny problems what so ever. it is a tough truck pretty comfortable. back seat is cramped, other than that its a good truck. the bed is a good size and doesnt fall apart like a ford would. i trust this truck and would drive it across the country without a worry in my mind. very relaible pretty powerfull. 4x4 works better than any ford 4x4 i have drivven.

This truck would shift with a series of distinct bumps, as many as three, on the automatic shift from 1st to 2nd gear. The dealer could not fix the problem so I went through the Florida Lemon Law process. The final arbitration decision was that the shifting problem had no "significant safety of monetary impact on the vehicle" therefore my request for replacement was "DENIED". Chevy, with the Arbitrators concurance, said that the bumping shift was a normal feature for this vehicle. BUYER BEWARE!

I've had my 2001 for about 1.5 years. The looks of the truck are great but it could use refinement in the interior (a lot of cheap plastic next to the leather). I've had it serviced twice for drivetrain noise during start and stops. They ended up replacing the rear leaf springs and the yoke on the rear-end. It is better but I think the problem is coming back. There are also a lot of little annoying noises and squeeks in the interior, especially when it gets cold. The 5.3L is great but it lacks the git up that I would expect from this engine. Perhaps its the 3.73 gear. I would expect that for the price of the truck that Chevy would take care of the little annoyances.

The truck has been very good. I only have replaced the battery and rear brakes. So far the motor 5.3 has plenty of power. I have added a cold air box, mass air flow sensor and a cat back exhaust. This has given it and me a real kick. Towing is of little effort. But I too have been getting those cold start knocks (lifters).the only real complaint is the brakes. Plain and simple, they stink. Please go back to rear drums. The Firestone tires were horrible. Very poor in wet conditions.

The vehicle has stranded me three times in less than two years and was about to fail another time. It has been the same problem with the distributer rotor getting corroded each time. The first time it failed, the GM repair shop burned out the starter motor thinking that it was just low on gas. Then they claimed that I had been driving through deep water. At another GM repair shop, the next two times it was blaimed on the AC dripping on the distributor rotor and the final time was due to it being somewhat rainy. So apparently the Silverado is like a rock as long as it is not too warm or rainy.

It's style, size, and feel are "just right" to me when compared to the '01 Ram and '01 Ford. There are a few squeaks over bumps when it's cold (50F or below), but nothing out of the ordinary. Plenty of power from the 5.3L, but you need to bury your foot to find it. Blame the over- conservative tranny programming GM provides and get something like the Hypertech PowerProgrammer to "fix" it. Great in snow, but the ABS is a little too sensitive. Either add weight to the bed (300lbs or so) or see if a dealer will adjust it.

This is the most powerful truck I've ever owned! Chassis is also the stiffest as well. Much better than my '03 F150 which I got rid of after 7 months for the '01 Chev. I've had problems with the A/C, got those fixed, also the annoying cold start knock, quiets down after warming up (recommend full-synthetic oil to quiet down). Tie rods and steering system needed fixing at 70,000 miles (very expensive without warranty).

I just traded mine off after 180k. The only repair I made during the four years was a front spindle. Other than that the truck performed well.

leather interior has the worst seats in the world, most uncomfortable to sit in. The rest of the truck is great. Not impressed with onstar and let it go. Fades in and out of service.

My 9 mo. old '01 LT has a few issues I'd like to address. 1) Fix the ABS. It kicks in too early and too often. 2) The lower-lubar area on the leather buckets needs better long term comfort (4+ hours). 3) Some fit-and-finish details. Too many small rattles. 4) The 5.3L is powerful, but seems lacking in the low-end with the 3.73 ratio. If you're buying a truck to haul, tow, or go off-road with, pick the 4.10. You'll thank me later. Otherwise a solid, capable truck. Yes, I'd buy another one.

This is the best truck I ever owned. No major problems except for air conditioning belt, and replaced brakes at 7,000 miles now have 52,000 miles and no problems. Captian chairs excellent heated seat's are great in winter time. Only problem with interior, is the back seat does not give enough leg room for my growing kids.I pull a 5,000lb horse trailer in the MT, and I cant tell it's there. I look forward to up grading to the 2500HD crew cab on day.. If you want a good family truck get the silverado...

Extremely durable and powerful engine. For the time I have had the vehicle I have enjoyed driving it, comfortable and spacious even for the long road trip. Gas mileage isn't great I get around 15 in town and 18 to 20 on the highway.

Got this vehicle for just over $5000 for my then teenage son, when we got it the vehicle already had 195,00 miles on it. the previous owner used it at a commuter vehicle on the freeway, and when we got it there were minimal maintenance issues that needed to be taken care of. Even after neglected care, after a little elbow grease, this truck's been running great ever since and now has 233,000 miles on it. other than routine maintenance, the truck's been running great for the miles it has on it.

I bought this truck used with 20K miles on it. To date I've put 7300 miles on it and it has been a super vehicle. (If you're looking to get 45 MPG you're looking at the wrong vehicle!) Compared with Ford and Dodge power and mileage is great. I'm averaging 17 around town and about 20 on interstates. To date I've had no problems and only spent for maintenance items on the vehicle. I would buy another!

i purchased this 4.8 v8 silverado with 59000 miles now it has 216000 miles and the only thing i have ever purchased for it has been the alternator and normal maintenance. this truck went through burnouts, racing on highway, offroading, and through snow without a single problem.. the best thing is that the motor and transmission still works perfect sounds even better then my fathers 2008 silverado. chevy rocks

I had a 1996 chevrolet Extended cab and I loved it! We traded it in in 2001 February for a 2001 Dodge Durango! Boy what a mistake that was! I hated the Durango! I loved the room, but the insurance, the gas mileage and the fact that from June until August it was in the shop for A/C repairs we decided that we should go back to Chevy! We would have never gotten rid of the 96, except we needed the 4 doors! Wow What a trip! I love the 01 truck! Could not be happier!

I purchased this vehilce last march and by the time it had 39,000 miles on it the rearend had gone out, the serpentine pully had gone bad, the front shocks were leaking and it had an airleak in the dash somewheres from the date of purchase. All of these miles on this truck were highway miles with regular maitnance done on it. I was very disappointed in the quality of the vehicle.

I had many many miles behind 4 different windshields on my old 2001 Silverado I named "Goldie" not only because it was gold but because I always liked Goldie Hawn and I realized that was my best chance at her and I ever getting together and quite frankly like her and her long time spouse Kurt Russell she gave me a long term relationship on the heavy end of 377 thousand miles and tons of good times. This truck was not babied but was well taken care of and we went places, lots of places. From the Florida Keys to the Carolinas, Ohio and more and hours and hours in the hot Florida Sun sitting in traffic waiting on all the wonderful tourons, I mean tourists, sorry you have to live there to understand. Goldie was a 2001 LS 5.3 Step Side and she gave a great ride, hugged the road and had no problem coming to a complete stop in an instant. I had her off road quite a bit as well and with the 3.73 locking diff. I got through a lot. It was comfortable even on long rides at least for the front passengers. Now I never sat in the backseat but from what I hear for the year it is the most comfortable of the trucks in it's class but still uncomfortable to be in for an extended ride. The cons for me are I think some of the interior materials could have been a little better. In the time I had it I put 3 water pumps in it and 1 radiator, 1 alternator, and the usual brakes and such which it did not need for over 110,000. I still see her driving around on occasion but has since had an engine replacement. So I set my sights out for a new old work truck and I just acquired a 2001 LS 4.8 with 149,500 and going to see how high I can get this tack! LIKE A ROCK!

Overall liked the truck and held up well, with the exception of the engine. At 16,500 it began knocking on start-up and got worse the next few months. I took it to the dealer because I obviously needed a new motor! Well to my surprise the dealer says "they all do that, that is normal" A day of research on the internet, and a couple sleepless nights, I traded it in to a wholesaler before the end of the week. I take very good care of my trucks and expect them to look/act/rune like new, and hold there resale value, but with a gas engine that sounded like a diesel, this one had to go. I bought a Ford.

We bought the truck brand new in 2001. I’m not sure exactly how many miles it has on it, but I would guess around 200k to 250k miles. It has held up ok the speedometer, fuel gage, tailgate handle, and the driver door handle have broken, but we still have it. We’ve gone a lot of places we thought it could never handle. The interior of the truck is really bad, you can see every single stain, the rear seats are pretty much useless, and the seats are really uncomfortable and hot.
