Beautiful Blend of Luxury and Performance
Bought a 2024 BMW X5 m40i about a month ago. Totally impressed! Exterior styling changes further enhance the beauty of the car. Interior is clean, simple, and elegant. Engine and transmission powerful and smooth. Very quiet ride! I carefully compared to Mercedes GLE 450 before purchase. GLE body style looked a bit dated and stodgy to me. Reviews of GLE touted interior luxury, but to me, the BMW is hands down more luxurious and up to date looking. During driving test, the GLE was not as tight and nimble, and I felt some roll in curves. BMW driving performance was superb and superior. For me, the choice was easy. BMW X5 delivers an excellent blend of luxury and performance that is best in class.

An Impressive vehicle
I have owned the X5 for four months now, and I am extremely pleased with it. The base engine is powerful and smooth, and I’m glad I didn’t get the 50i. The interior is beautiful and very comfortable. The technology package is also well worth it, for the self-driving feature. Multiple times now, I’ve been able to engage it on a highway, let it drive for 30 miles or more at a time. It does an nice job. My only complaint is about the lags and glitches with iDrive 8. But I just bypass it and use CarPlay.

Great car, if it doesn’t die on you
1st BMW for us. X5 50e. Great, loved the car. 3 months after purchase, 3003 miles, suffered “drivetrain malfunction” while going over the Grapevine in California. Towed to dealership in SoCal where the car sits to this day. Day 32 now. Service advisor said “Germany is making all the decisions”. Took 3 wks to figure out what is wrong. Need to replace the high voltage battery and some battery control module or something. No ETA on when parts will be available for repairs. No end in sight. BMW North America - talk about NOT being helpful! First and LAST BMW for this family. I’ve driven Hondas all my life, all my kids now drive Hondas… BMW lost a repeat customer for the next 30 yrs because of the poor service, not the crappy lemon they sold me. Was more than willing to give them a second/third chance, but not with poor customer service I experienced. Starting process to have BMW buy it back and get my money back. We’ll see how that goes…
Luxurious and fast, but not without faults
It has only 200 miles on it so time will tell how reliable it is, but everything works fine. We did buy the maintenance plan because the car has a lot of expensive maintenance which takes time and trips to the dealer. It’s my wife’s car and she looked at many of the competitors and chose the BMW. First the good things. It’s very smooth, quiet, fast, and luxurious. The interior has pretty wood and soft surfaces, a very nice wide screen, color changeable ambient lighting, lots of features and capabilities, etc. The sport seats are very comfortable and the front legroom and headroom are excellent. The start/stop function, which you can only turn off by putting the transmission in sport mode, is hardly noticeable. BMW has done a good job with the mild hybrid function and it gets good gas mileage, especially considering the power and weight. The transmission engages and shifts very smoothly. The infotainment/technology is very good and fast. It’s almost overwhelming. The car can do so many things from voice and gesture control, park itself, to lane changes. We’re still trying to figure out how to do certain functions that change with the different key fobs. That’ll come, but the class on all the features is almost a necessity. Utube has been helpful. The standard in line six turbo has all the power you need. Do you really need to go from zero to sixty in less than 5 seconds and go around a corner at warp speed? If so, get a sports car. The inline 6 has a very reliable reputation, which can’t be said about the V8s. It’s very fast. It’s a good thing the speed limit sign is displayed because it’s easy to go much faster without realizing it. The car is extremely comfortable and the run flat tires are very smooth. The vehicle feels a bit heavy, but it handles well. IMHO, you don’t buy an X5 to race. It handles well, but I would not say that it has sports car handling. Now for the not so good. The back seat legroom is tight and it’s a challenge to get in and out, especially since there isn’t a third row. There are no buttons in the cargo area to fold down the rear seats. For the life of me I don’t know why BMW didn’t include them, especially since many other OEM’s do and BMW includes so many nice features elsewhere. The “clamshell” rear hatch is good, and I like the little truck like tailgate, which protects the rear painted area. Don’t accidentally hit the close button with your torso when you’re putting something in the cargo area because the tailgate will close and send whatever is on the tailgate flying, not to mention surprising you. They could have put the button in many other out of the way places. The car does not come with a spare. The interior storage is limited. There is no sunglass holder and no storage under the front stack like most OEMs. The electronic shifter takes some getting used to. The wireless charger barely charges, but that’s what you get with most wireless chargers. You have the run flat tires, but where do you drive to in 50 miles, unless you have a spare, especially if you’re on the road? It REQUIRES premium gas which costs 20% more than regular so it’s like cutting the mpg by 20%. Consumer Reports terms it the most expensive car to own over 10 years and second most after 5 years. More than a Mercedes, Volvo, Audi, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, etc. Yikes! The depreciation really increases precipitously when the warranty runs out. It doesn’t come with leather unless you pay $2k extra. It comes with “Sensafin” which is a fancy term for vinyl. It does look and feel good and is supposed to hold up and look better than leather. It’s the first vinyl interior we’ve had in 25+ years and we’ve never had a problem with leather. BMW screwed up the selling process. Everything was fine on the first ordered car when we went to pick it up, until they went to finalize the sale on the computer. The trade title had already been signed, the paperwork done etc. It wouldn’t go through because there was a recall. This was on a car made days before. Some sort of software/sensor problem. Really? So she ordered an identical one, but that meant driving the trade home, picking up the signed title, etc. and waiting again. There were no recalls on the second ordered car so she drove it home, but they forgot to order the all weather mat in the cargo area on the second car, which necessitated another trip to the dealer an hour away. BMW’s high end sales process was good, but they glossed over the nuts and bolts of the basic sales process. That doesn’t bode well for the rest of the experience, but I hope it’s much better. She had to order another car and they still couldn’t get it right on the second try. We did order a spare from BMW, which costs $250, so the car has a spare. You can get a spare in an ordered car, but they don’t normally come on a car on the lot. I’ll update later on the ownership, which I hope goes much better. The software did hiccup. When the car had 250 miles on it all a sudden it starting saying lots of maintenance was past due. My wife figured out the car’s calendar thought it was 2035. Two attempts to put the real date in finally worked. Hopefully that issue won’t come back. On a side note I had the car ceramic coated at our house for 1/5th what the dealer would have charged. The car really looks good and it sheds water nicely from all surfaces. The car market has gone from 800k cars two years ago to 2.8 million today so the market has normalized and BMW is right at the average market days to sell so supply has caught up with demand. Dealers like to act like it was 2 years ago, but you can negotiate and every OEM has incentives like the 2.99% financing on the X5s. It’s going to get even better for buyers as the supply continues to go up and the dealers acknowledge it’s not yesterday.

3d X5 and THE Best
Owned since mid May and now with 6K miles. Traded in 2019 model which was the second X5 we owned. The previous one was great but this is now even better. Fantastic speed 0-60 and it is like a rocket when passing using the Sport mode. The outside is cleaner and sportier (happy they kept the traditional kidney grill) and interior has a true luxury feel. New technology (curved info screen has perfect visibility for driver and front passenger, apps setup and appearances on screen is like an iPhone, easy to see and track mpg performance for each trip and overall (I’m achieving about 1.5 mpg above rating), ability to customize instrumentation gives driver comfort to follow map and road directions and heads-up display map/direction easy to read and follow), ride is very smooth although I would have preferred regular tires over flat resistant ones since the latter is a little stiffer. Elimination of stick type shifter for a short and small shifter eliminates obstacle for reaching other controls on the middle panel. Reduction of air vents’ size reduces clutter while air stream is not reduced. Finally, you can tell right away that you are in a BMW because everything like doors, windows, body, etc. fit tight and reduce road noise to the max. Well done BMW engineers as usual!

A brand new car that died on me after 157 miles…
I acquired a new X5 50e with 8 miles on it. After roughly 160 miles of easy driving, the car simply died. I came one morning to find it in my garage with a severe drivetrain malfunction message that prevents the engine to turn on (cannot engage the transmission in drive mode). More malfunction messages kept on coming afterwards as well. The car got towed to the dealership and I have no ETA for the repairs, after they had the opportunity to work on it for a full work day. I am. It even sure that the diagnosis is understood. Not what you expect from a new vehicle from any car manufacturer. I don’t have a car right now and the best bmw has offered me so far is to pay for my Uber rides, up to a clip. The dealer does not have any loaners. If you plan on purchasing this, you have been warned :) UPDATE: This is an update to a review I wrote 20 days ago. My new x5 50e with roughly 160 miles on it had a component failure (combined charging unit). To make matter worse, I did not have a good experience with the support from the bmw. I had to escalate emails to get them to do something about this. While they finally got back to me to help out with a compensation, they also told me that the component that needs to be replaced would finally be delivered this past week to the dealership. Please also note that I was told by the dealership that the part in question is back ordered from Germany and also undergoing some type of design upgrade. The part has yet to be delivered; not even clear of it has been shipped according to my last conversation with the dealership yesterday. 10 days ago both bmw North America and the dealer told me that it was on its way and to expect the car towards the end of this past week; but now, the dealership has changed its tune (they do not know when the part is coming in saying that there is no way to track it) and my contact at bmw customer service is not picking up my calls nor returning my emails (hopefully just on vacation but I doubt it). I am still waiting with absolutely no ETA for this. It could be next week, it could be another couple of weeks? No idea. While the dealership refused to give me loaner (some strange policy they have for customers in situation) or replacement vehicle, they were able authorized a rental car under their name (Nissan murano that I had to change recently for a Hyundai hybrid suv as it was not properly serviced). So that’s my story 😞. Owning this x5 50e has just been a complete nightmare.

Not ready for prime time!
Took delivery of my 2024 X5 50E last August and have had nothing but trouble since. Total system malfunction leaving me stranded for hours waiting for a tow, multiple software failures, steering column shuddering so hard when retracting it sounds like it is stuck, uncomfortable seats, etc. This is my third X5 and it is DEFINITELY MY LAST! My family can't believe I haven't dumped this piece of junk.
Smooth and Fast
I've had my X5 50e for 2 weeks now and it is just so smooth, quiet, quick, and comfortable. Love all of the tech and after some time spent getting myself familiar with all of the tech I am now very comfortable just getting in and driving. I shopped it against the GLE 450e and the Range Rover Sport PHEV. If you know what to look for when looking at vehicles to compare build quality, it is just simply built better than the MB GLE450e, plus you get the rock solid BMW inline 6. The Range Rover Sport PHEV is well built, but doesn't feel as planted and is not as enjoyable to drive... plus you would pay a great deal more $ for questionable reliability. I don't buy cars for show. I mostly use electric driving around town and it's wonderful. If I want to punch it, the power is immediate and just downright fun. I love this SUV! I am very happy with this X5 50e. It puts a smile on my face every time I'm behind the wheel. My wife also enjoys the comfort of the multi-contour seats and the massage feature, so bonus that my wife loves it too. Right now I've averaged over 90MPG and the ability to drive around town on electric power and still have the use of the hybrid/ICE for longer trips without waiting around 30-40 minutes to refuel like a full EV is the sweet spot for me. I'll be happy to go full EV in the future when the charging infrastructure is better built out and battery technology has improved. The only con I would have for the X5 is less than desirable backseat legroom. It's not something that affects me, but being 6'1" when the driver's seat is in the most comfortable position for me another 6 footer behind me could use a couple more inches of legroom.

Great vehicle~until you have a issue @ 1k miles
The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive40i is a fun, fast, and a fuel sipper (28 mpg while cruising at 81 mph) . Until, you have smoke pouring out of the hood and fenders at 1,000 miles and four months, since the BMW rolled off the factory floor. This was my second attempt, to own a BMW in the hopes that the reliability has improved over the years. Unfortunately, history repeats itself, even worse this time! 800 miles and a valve cover gasket leak due to a “cut from factory”. I do not know what happened to quality control but apparently that has gone out the window post COVID. However, what has made things worse, not only did this occur while attempting to visit family 600 miles away but BMW road side assistance/Customer Care is TERRIBLE! To be honest, it makes me sick to think one spends so much on a “performance luxury brand” and was treated better by General Motors (GM) when a major issue occurred with a GM vehicle. I have lost time (in my opinion is more valuable then money itself) visiting my family, stress for being broken down on the side of the road with a four month old. Then to add injury to the situation, no rental car available and BMW couldn’t not locate the vehicle via BMW’s own GPS emergency services. BMW customer care’s reply to this disaster was, “So sorry this happen. Well glads its fix and next time it breaks down call us back to figure something out.” This is awful and just goes to show how dismal this corporation regards its customers. So buyers be prepared to have better customer care and assistance by GM than BMWs performance luxury brand when something does go wrong.

A/C is an issue.
Car drives great. A/C design changed from 2023 to 2024. New design does not produce sufficient air volume to cool the vehicle when hot. Takes 10 minutes to cool. BMW does not acknowledge this as an issue. You will have to tint car to keep from sweating.
