Gets 30-33 miles on battery power alone. Interior better looking & more comfortable than its peers. In-line 6 is powerful yet gets good gas mileage. Plenty of room behind second row seats. Come with $7500 rebate from federal government & $1000 rebate from BMCCA if you have been a member for at least 6 months. That is a total of $8500 off MSRP from rebates. Quite the deal while getting 50 mpge. Update 1: 6000 miles & zero problems or issues. Last tank full of gas lasted over 900 miles. All electric miles cost 5 cents here while 93 octane cost 27 cents per mile. About 40 percent is all electric & 60 per cent on gas. Great ride, power, comfort & mpg. Cons: cost of 93 octane. Loving this SUV.

Great transition to an electric vehicle

It's a "real" BMW with all the road feel for which X5's are known. In town, my X5 has been "all electric" with a fast charger at home and access to ChargePoint at work. On the weekends, the hybrid mode has kept us just over 50 MPG as we travel over 200 miles to and from the NC mountains. Very happy with the fit and finish, ride, and technology. BMW updates have been well planned. But I do have one complaint. In Europe the 45e gets over 50 miles per charge. I'm told the battery discharge has been "limited" for the US market. Come on BMW, release the juice!

Bought 2022 45e some time back and loaded with each and every option that BMW offered. Came from 2018 Audi Q5 and we are very impressed with X5. It is extremely well rounded vehicle and electric capabilities are impressive. - Consistently gets 40-45 miles on full charge (city driving). i have so far used only a single tank of gas and it involved a 300 mile highway trip with no charging anywhere. - Exclusive highway driving in Hybrid mode (which is quick as well) gets me around 35 mpg - Very well integrated infotainment system compared to Audi MMI. It is not at all hard to learn as some people said. It is intuitive, easy to master and actually works. Voice commands work perfectly. App integration can be little better thou. BMW assistant is very impressive. - Digital key works great with my apple devices - Very comfortable ride (with air suspension) and fun to drive in hybrid and sport mode. Electric only mode as expected is more suitable for slower city driving. - Lots of space (comparing to Q5) - Luxurious and gorgeous interior, leather is supple (merino) and comfy - Very impressive breaking capability. (I did opt for larger M sports breaks, although with regenerative breaking they do get less use, comes in handy when you are breaking hard) Cons: - 240V Level 2 charger is limited to 16 amps. Implies it takes me 4-6 hours to fully charge. BMW could have pushed to 32 amps? - Rear seats are little straight and feel uncomfortable for longer journeys, kids are happy with them. But at 6'3" I don't find rear seats much comfy. - Driver Assistance package is fun on highway or complete stop and go situations but for regular city driving (no traffic) it still needs some polishing. It give me creeps sometimes when it cant detect a lane but does give me enough warning. - Parking assistance works but is slow in detecting spots. I only find it useful to impress the kids :) - Steering is little numb specially on 40i version. I found 45e to be little better but my last Q5 definitely had better steering feel. Considering you can still get $7500 federal credit on this vehicle, I don't see any reason to buy 40i version. I drove both and found 45e to have better steering response, more engaging drive (may be more weight helps) and plenty of power (actually more HP) for my daily driving needs. Overall, we are very impressed on how well BMW has executed here. Perfect vehicle if you drive less than 50 miles a day and need extra oomph for weekend driving on mountains

Best 2022 PHEV

With 30 to 35 miles electric only range, the X5 45e is a great around town luxury vehicle with comfort and safety of a BMW. The 6 cylinder engine when needed starts generally smoothly with only the occasional low speed connection shudder and combined with battery power really accelerates. Gas mileage once the battery is expended is 23 to 26 mpg at highway speeds, but drops to 13-15 mpg when recharging the battery which is mainly used to be able to precool or prewarm the car remotely. Onboard charger is only 3.7 kw so a full charge takes 5 hours at 240 V 16 amps with 1% gain every 3 minutes. Yet charging by the engine takes only 1 hour which is at 17 kw rate so it is not a battery issue but apparently BMW being cheap. Also the battery has 24 kwhr capacity but in the USA is limited to 17 kwhr for warranty reasons (thanks California). Ride is smooth but controlled. The 2023 RR PHEV will have 62 mile electric only range but will cost $30 to $50k more. Beware the standard model which has satin aluminum trim which will severely discolor in touchless car washes due to the caustic soaps, so if for no other reason get the M sport option which has painted black trim.

Decided to tippy toe into the hybrid/electric world, but not without a massive amount of self doubt, personal agony and hesitation. The dealer has a single X5 on the lot after someone who originally ordered the car (btw, good job on the choices, MSport package, etc) decided not to purchase. Had 20 min to make a decision as the phones lid up with people inquiring…this is a new world, with $6 pG and $7,500 of tax credits! Now a month into it…. What a great choice! Power - outstanding. Handling is as expected from BMW. Cabin is divine, materials is first class, solid built, roomy, looks sweet! Now, what to consider in your purchase due diligence phase? First thing first, you will need to get an electrician to wire your garage for Level 2 wiring. Then invest in Level 2 charging station ($600). Must have if you’re are serious about using electric power, which gets you 35 miles, but takes two days to be charged with regular cable/plugs. The good thing, driving in sport using electric only, still makes you feel you’re driving a BMW. Seriously, 35 miles on electric, for most folks, will get them there and back, yet, you won’t have to research for charging stations on your way to your next golf trip!
