BMW M5 - World Class Fun

I have owned 4 BMWs and several other cars. The 2006 M5 is the most fun, practical car on the market. The SMG transmission is a blast - very versatile, fun to shift, useful but not great in auto mode. I get comments all the time about what a great car it is. And I love the iDrive. Yes, I would do some things differently, but overall it is very easy to use. Only complaint about the car is that I would like to see the dashboard more driver oriented like the E39 was.

Little disappointed

This was one of the first 6 speed MT cars in the US and I have to admit I was pretty angry to find out the traction control could not be turned off; no one told me this ahead of time. This is not in keeping with the M car concept. I don't know if this approach is an attempt to save the driveline or save drivers from themslves but either way, this should have been made clear BEFORE the car got to the US. I don't think I would have bought it if I had known. Otherwise the car is very well appointed and fun to drive. Handling even without EDC on is very good. Brakes are outstanding. Can't get over 12 mpg no matter how I drive, but what can you expect from a car like this?

2007 BMW M5

Probably the only car you can store your golf clubs (it comes with an illustration for 4 bags), bag cart or baby stroller at the same time. Great amenities such as window shades, adaptive headlights, etc. Five people fit nicely although the rear folks will be crowded. Nice exhaust note, lines. Gas mileage and transmission is another story.

M5 MMM

This is a great performance sedan, huge power and handling and braking capabilities when wanted, and easy docile cruiser otherwise. Wonderful exhaust note. Eye catching style/color, rare, and fine. 6 speed manual is state of the art, smooth, accurate, and fun. Gas mileage can be either OK or terrible, your results will depend on how often you dip into the high rpm full throttle antics. 20 hwy is doable with some restraint. Some minor nit picks but overall a great car, and great value even at the lofty price. A bit heavy, but solid.

No More 2nd Thoughts

Ist new car, 1st BMW, and I was worried about the price. I just got it and all of the buyer's remorse/doubts are now gone. It's incredible & I love it! Did I say that it's incredible! Great performance & I am still in the break in period (<1200mls=<1/2 pedal,<5500 rpm). The only drawback is the gas mileage - I knew it was 11/17 mpg (more like 7 in stop and go-18 hwy @80mph & 11.5 combined-and I am babying the car right now!). But experiencing it first hand is something else! Interlagos Blue M5=Headturner!!

What can I say, I'm in love with my car. I also have a 3 Series, but this, my friend, is top of the line. I wouldn't trade in this car for anything. I call her my baby! Yes, she's a girl. She's the best.

Buyer Beware

Buyer beware: There’s a reason for all those mediocre reviews out there in the automotive press. In truth, many of the reviews sound as though the writers think even less of the car than what they actually write, but are reluctant to bash a car with the reputation of the M5. Well that reputation was built from the first three US models. This one is fundamentally different. This is a Mercedes posing as a BMW. Its all about speed and comfort and lacks the handling of the earlier cars. Its very heavy and you feel every pound. It about cruising; not about flogging down a twisty road in the countryside. You feel disconnected from the road, there is no sense of immediacy on turn in.

Not up to BMW M standards

Too heavy, not a precise and agile M car as its forebears were. Most of the performance is completely unusable in daily driving. Prepare to be beat at every stoplight unless you are really on it. I think J. Clarkson said it best: completely annoying until you hit the M button. Too bad you can't use that button for 95% of your driving; meaning you will have a really annoying car for 95% of the time you are driving. Sold mine a bought Porsche: a massive improvement in just about every way.

Now yesterday's technology, but what an engine.

Pricey repairs will give back some of the bang for the buck, as will gas mileage, but there is no better way to grab a stout 500HP V10 than this car.
