The 2025 ES is Lexus' midsize luxury sedan. It's a bit larger than the sporty IS and quite a bit more affordable than the larger LS. High points for the ES include roomy seating, a smooth quality, and a pleasing amount of upscale features for the price. New for 2025 is a Black Line appearance package. It's available on ES 350's in F Sport Handling trim and adds black-painted exterior trim pieces.

Driving experience

How does the Lexus ES drive? You don't expect much vigor or verve from a luxury hybrid, but the ES 300h handles surprisingly well. It stays composed in corners, with better body control than you'd expect from a luxury sedan. The ES 300h isn't made for stoplight sprints, but acceleration is decent for a hybrid, hitting 60 mph from a standstill in 8.3 seconds.

Braking can be clunky, with a harsh sensation when the ES switches between its regenerative and friction brake modes. Otherwise, the engine and CVT automatic's smooth acceleration makes the ES a pleasure to drive, even in city traffic, where it feels like it's gliding.

The ES is unsurprisingly sublime on the road, wth a well-composed ride that dials out most (if not all) road imperfections. Wind noise intrudes a bit at highway speeds, but maybe it's just more noticeable since the car tames road and tire noise so well.

The ES lacks some of the latest advanced driver assistance systems, but what it does have — such as lane keeping assistance, blind-spot detection, and adaptive cruise control — works well without being irritating.

How comfortable is the Lexus ES? Comfort and isolation are ES hallmarks. The front seats are firm and supportive, without excessive side bolsters that interfere with getting in and out. (Note that the F Sport's sport seats have a more aggressive shape and bolsters but are still covered in supple leather.) The rear seats are just as comfortable, if a bit wide and flat. You can sit up front or in the back for long stretches without fatigue.

The ES 350 hasn't lost its ability to absorb bumps and road rash either. Wind noise intrudes a bit at highway speeds, but maybe it's just more noticeable since the car tames road and tire noise so well. Engine noise is almost imperceptible.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The ES has received a number of updates over the years. The most significant is the addition of a 12.3-inch infotainment display on higher trims. Its graphics are a bit bland, but the system works well and is snappy to respond to touch inputs. You can also control many nav, phone, audio, and even climate control functions through voice commands. Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is included.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The ES 350's 13.9-cubic-foot trunk has a suitable amount of room for luggage and golf clubs. However, the rear seats don't fold down, so you're not going to be able to load longer items. Interior storage space for small items is adequate. The door pockets are slim, but the cupholders work well for holding various sizes of water bottles or drinks.

Is the Lexus ES a good value? For a relatively affordable sum, the ES delivers an appealing luxury experience. The top-shelf interior materials and design make the ES cockpit an attractive place to be. The upholstery feels supple and substantial, and the cabin shows typical Lexus attention to detail: tight panel gaps, damped button action and detailed stitching.

Lexus' pricing is appropriate for the high quality of materials, space and comfort. Some competitors start at a little less but aren't quite as refined. It's on par with rivals in warranty coverage, but most can't match the Lexus dealer experience.

How’s the fuel economy? With an EPA estimate of 44 mpg combined, the ES 300h is one of the more efficient luxury sedans you can buy. We observed 46.2 mpg on our evaluation route, which indicates that the EPA figure is attainable.

X factor

On its face, the ES might seem bland and uninteresting. But there's something special about the serenity it offers at such a reasonable price point. It's built like a bank vault, will relax you no matter what traffic situation you're in, has most of the trappings you need when it comes to tech, and asks absolutely nothing extra of you as the driver. Sometimes, an isolation chamber experience, perfect build quality, and comfort everywhere are worth their weight in gold. Apply that logic here, and the ES should be a much more expensive machine.

We drive 3 of the Es300h luxury models. My wife has worked hard and has earned an upgrade from the Camry she’s driven for 12 years. The Es300h luxury models was appointed well to the point of being too much tech to learn but the long-run will prove it a worthy upgrade.
