A few issues with the M5

Craig, 01/29/2010
2000 BMW M5 4dr Sedan

Well, I got the M5 in 2009 on a dealer trade with 160k. The car runs a drives great. A few problems for future owners to look out for. Almost All E39 M5 have vanos knock. It sounds like "rattles in a can" on start up. BMW WANTED $4000 to change the VANOS units. Next, CARBON BUILD UP is a huge issue with this car. If the previous owners did not take care of the car, there will be carbon deposits in the engine with will lead to a secondary airflow low code. Sometimes the transmission would not shift into gears easily when it was colder outside. REAR LSD was also leaking. NOTE: Trans fluid and LSD fluid is not lifetime fluid like BMW claims. CHANGE the fluids out. Also car began to smoke

There is simply nothing like putting this car through an on ramp at full tilt in 3rd gear, or going flat out a 5:30am on the highway. I have never owned a more completely satisfying car. As one magazine said it's a super car, super when you want super, and a car when you need a car.

I've owned my M5 for seven years and love everything about it. I originally bought it as a Sunday driver, but I soon found out how much fun this car was to drive and it's become my everyday car. This is the third BMW I have owned and is by far the best. The seats are extremely comfortable and the power and handling can only be described in one word as INCREDIBLE. 114,000 miles on the odometer and not one major problem speaks highly for the build quality of the E39 M5!

I've had the car for 2 weeks. It just absolutely blazes. The stock wheels are beautiful and the 4x exhaust tips give it a muscle car look. Understated, but it's a gorgeous car. The interior is fantastic. Leather everywhere, great seats and the Alcantra headliner is a really nice touch. I might just be driving M5s for the rest of my life.

To just look is not 2b believed. Out performs anything in or out of its class. BMW has worked their magic on refining a passenger vehicle with sports car demeaner. A pleasure to catch the expressions on the many faces as it passes and the will to go above & beyond. A fun car for every day commuting & a blast on the weekend countryside roads. This is truly the total package in a car well designed & engineered. Hats off to those at BMW for making available such an automobile.Thank You

I have owned the this car for coming up a year now. I bought the car at 111k and now have driven it to 138k closing on 140k soon. It has been a lot of miles the MPG isn't too bad when you consider the performance it offers. It goes through tires quickly. Plenty of people think that the car is newer than what it actually is. A lot of the technology is outdated and I wish I got the 01 due to the updates. But the car has been nothing but an amazing car for me. Drove it to Texas from California averaging higher speeds and drove it back without a worry. Also my driving style isnt always the smoothest or most gentle. Ive used it with a car seat and its a great family car as well.

The ULTIMATE Ultimate Driving Machine

BMW has for years been known as "The Ultimate Driving Machine" and the M5 is without doubt "The ULTIMATE Ultimate Driving Machine!" The E39 BMW M5 is an iconic vehicle, and deservedly so. A true wolf in sheep's clothing, with a tastefully understated exterior that only hints at the vehicle's performance capabilities and BMW Motorsport bloodline. The interior is designed with equal taste and the vehicle has ample room for rear seat passengers if required. The manual six speed transmission is a joy to manipulate, and thankfully this vehicle is equipped no other way. In essence, where other vehicles are manufactured for practicality, this vehicle is made purely for enjoyment of the drive.

I always wanted one of the coveted M5 BMW cars ever since I was a kid and could read about them. I worried that I may be disappointed once I bought one with what it offered and delivered in reality. I was not let down one bit. If anything I was blown away by its power and pure joy of driving it. With its crisp 6 speed and so much power to play with, it's a pleasure to accelerate off the light or pass on the highway safely with lots of juice in reserve. The braking is outstanding as always and as expected from a BMW. The sport setting tightens up the steering and throttle response for an even more amazing driving experience. I smile every time I see it parked in the driveway.

I can't spend enough time in this car. It's power, handling, flexibility and creature comforts, all with seating for 5, are just not available anywhere else. (Sorry MB E55) The engine is rock solid, although the ECU is a little finicky, reporting errors fairly regularly, but my local dealer has been outstanding in fixing any issues under warranty AND providing a no charge rental. I very much like the stealth nature of this car. Only true car nuts recognize it, but with tires wider than the 540's, and a slighly lower suspension, it looks taut and forboding without screaming out that fact.

This car has style, elegance, comfort, and to date, the most power out of any sedan in the WORLD!!! No car even come close to the overall feeling you get from driving this truly exceptional machine! It's a solid, bullet proof, fun, comfortable, stable, hungry, explosive. The E39 is the best M5 ever made - and that's from seasoned BMW owners. This car holds its value because it is a value. I test drove an 00 M5 w/120,000 miles on i and totally ragged. It was still selling for 18k. This is an awesome car that still bring smiles to my grill. It's destined to be a classic on par with the e28 M5. I still drool when driven properly (100+ mph)

Top speed 155 MPH (182 MPH if delimited). All the fun of a sports car. All the amenities of an executive luxury sedan. Leather everywhere. Accolades from every major automotive magazine.

I was hesitant when I first drove the car when I bought it. Very soon though I came to realize that this was a savage machine able to withstand far more then I can dish out. Most at home on a track at high speeds, it is a super tank. Hanldes much better than this family sedan should and the overall performance is phenominal. I made a couple minor upgrades for the days the car is on the track, but these in now way interfere with my everyday commute.

Now that the new M5 has appeared in the US Market, the previous generation has become quite a bargain. Still turns heads, still drives like a rocket, but you can buy one for less than $30,000. Tremendous deal. Always have it examined by a dealership before you buy. Anticipate (and budget) higher than average maintenance expenses, but not more than 200% of the average used car of this year. If you use a car an appliance to get from point A to point B, you will be happier with a Honda. If you love to drive, this is the car for you. The staggered tire sizes means no rotating tires. No spare tire, no run flat tires. Better know how to drive a stick. Higher maintenance costs than a Toyota.

I have owner many different sportscars from all the major manufacturers, Porsche 911, 1994 Maqzda RX-7, etc. All of them were fantastic but none of them can compare to the M5. I cannot imagine ever finding the combination of true sportscar performance with the 5 series comforts and features. My only gripe is gas mileage which makes me wince a bit. My 911 got ok mileage, (20-25 mpg) my M5 gets (12-17 mpg).

I sold my E36 M3 after I bought this car. I loved the M3, but hauling a teenage daughter and her friends around, I needed a 4-door. This car not only is much faster than the M3 was, but actually handles better as well, in spite of the extra weight! Incredibly neutral and smooth. Just aim and turn, no fuss, no drama. The acceleration is not to be believed! Fantastic! The car is already a classic and I've been followed to my destination and complimented/quizzed several times by those in the know. I was lucky to find a one-owner with just under 31K on the clock. But then, I'd been looking for 6 months. You'd think it was right off the showroom floor by its condition. Absolutely love it!

The car is a soft spoken beast. You can cruise in 5th/6th gear at 40mph and have no problem or you can take it to 100mph in 4th gear with ease. It is like driving a Viper with 4 drs, lots of room & a real trunk. You seldom see M5s on the road although you see lots of 5 series cars. It gets looks & comments yet looks so normal and functions like a normal sedan. Great pricing on them now too. Get a used M5 for what a G35 costs new and you don't see yourself all up & down the road. When new it was the fastest 4 door car on the planet & will be the 2nd or 3rd fastest for a long time to come. The stock sound system is just awesome.

Why do car magazines tell you to sell your soul to own a certain car? Because cars like the M5 exist! This is the finest car made in the world. Making this car your daily driver will ensure you smile everyday. The acceleration, handling, comfort and brakes strike a balance no one else has. Don't waste your time on the E55 or the XJR. I've had the car for nearly 7 years, and since I've never owned ANY car for more that 3-4 years, I've tried to look for something more exciting to replace it with for the last 3 years. There truly has been nothing out there that packs as much perfect styling, acceleration, comfort and overall fun factor as this "family" sedan. I finally found another 4 door car that just got released (CLS63 AMG) that has taken what M5 created, and stepped up the technology and power, while keeping the concept of having the most fun on the road while hauling a family of 4 and blowing the doors of anything in your path. The M5 experience has been precious!

Bought my M5 in 2004 with 28k miles and have enjoyed the performance, handling and build quality. This is my 3rd BMW and will only buy the M series from now on.No flash, just pure substance. The car is rock solid and the engine is bulletproof. There aren't enough superlatives to say how wonderfully delicious this iteration of the 5series is. THE BEST BMW YOU COULD OWN.

This is my 2nd M5 - I had owned the e34 chassis and I can see as well as feel certain shared characteristics. The e39 works perfect as I have a family that can all fit, and the trunk is larger than most. This car has exceeded my expectations in every way...quality, performance, did I say performance. Car is well suited for my 21 mile rt work commute…or 500 rt trips up north to the white mts where you see this car shine. The engine is very powerful, yet flexible and practical..3 or 4th gear pulls from 30 mph is no problem with that massive torque behind you. I am very lucky to have this car. And 23mpg (hwy) is not too shabby for 400bhp 4000lb vehicle.

The M5 is definitely the pinnicle of the sports sedan market. The E 55 doesn't come with a manual transmission, the S6 is too soft and loads up in the corners, and the XJR is just too heavy. BMW has given these cars telepathic handling, perfectly weighted steering, and one of the best transmissions I have ever used. The perfect, seamless blend of raw power, race inspired handling, BMW luxury. All hail the king!

There are truely no substitues for this machine. It is a CLASSIC which can now start appreciating in value now BMW has stopped building this model, and the upcoming new model seems to be a couple steps backwards in styling. This is a car you can drive to work everyday and don't have to have a Porsche or a Ferrari in your garage for your weekend driving pleasures. It truely is a drivers' car rather than for someone seeking for a shallow status. Certainly not for someone who likes automatics!

Faster than most everything, subtle looks, comfy and did I mention FAST! Great mileage for a 400HP sedan - 23+mpg when cruising on the freeway. It's a 911 with 4 doors. This car has the best fuel economy of any 5 passenger family sedan I have ever driven. The documented mileage of 12/19 is bogus, mine runs 18/25 regularly over the last 2 years. The stiffness of the suspension is not liked by all, but the enjoyment of handling is superior to even the greatest retro muscle cars Detroit is pumping out today. Why waste 40K or more on poorly designed gas guzzling US auto manufacturers where it is obvious they are still 10 years behind BMW. This ride is a pure joy, especially on open highways, in unpopulated areas, with no foliage, like West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Just a nice 4-door family sedan for grocery shopping!

I've driven many cars, but this has got to be the most balanced car there is on the market. I commute in this beauty, but it is still a joy to drive at mortal speeds...moving into the fast lane, well, it's fast acting prozac on wheels. I bought a used 2000 with 11,000 miles on it, but it ran like a new one (after looking at the history of the former owner 60 year old male--I snatched it for 63,000 out the door one 6 months ago.) If you don't have quite the amount needed for a new one, shop until you drop--you won't be sorry.
