M550i of the Decade
Nothing else to say, BMW couldn't have made a better M550i 2018 series car. We have had many other luxury vehicles, including an MB, Lexus, and a Volvo. This outclasses all of them in every scenario, hands down.

Amazing and undiscovered gem
All the comfort and convenience of a top-line BMW 5 series, with the power and handling of a real M car. i've owned this car for a little over 6 months now, and its been flawless. This is my first new car that i have not taken to dealer in the first 6 months. I drive it in Sport mode most of the time, and its simply fantastic. Fuel economy mixed is about 24 mpg, which i feel is very good for a car like this. Its faster than a base 911, a M2, M3, M4, C63 AMG, and most other super cars. In that context, its an amazing bargain, and a well kept secret, as i have seen very few in my neck of the woods.

Great Performance Machine!
After researching the E43 AMG and the M550i, I decided to lease the M550i. From the styling to the twin turbo V8 to all the amazing features...it’s a great car. The power is effortless and sounds great. The interior is very comfortable and everything is easy to use. The car rides very nicely on the 20” wheels. And the upgraded Bowers and Wilkins sound system is amazing. The dealership even delivered the car to my house. Very happy so far...

First BMW and LOVING IT!
We purchased our 2018 530e xDrive in August 2017 and without question is the best car I ever owned. The technology is amazing and the Hybrid capability has enabled me to refuel about once a month. I do a lot of local driving and have averaged a little more than 60 MPG. I had one tank that averaged 81 MPG. A lot of that has to do with our numerous short trips, but even when we took it on a longer trip we got in the high 30's. It will recharge in about 4 hours on a Level 1 charger. Many of my friends who own Cadillacs and Lexus have commented on how the 530e rides, handles and especially how quiet it is. Of course the $4600 + Income Tax CREDIT was certainly welcome also. Power, Agility, Beauty, all in one package. After driving our 530e for another year I am still convinced it is my best car ever. The more you drive it the more you appreciate all the little tech advancements it has. STILL LOVING IT!!

A classy hybrid
This review is an update to the review I submitted when the car was brand new. In brief, this car has been trouble-free since I bought it. It's tight, quiet, fairly fast, and virtually trouble-free (well, almost). The rest of this review was written back when the car was newly purchased. It's only got a 2 liter engine, but it's dual turbocharged!!! That means it's fast. Yet most surprising to me is the fact that this car is extremely quiet. It's so quiet that I seldom can hear it shift, thanks, in part, to its highly efficient 8 speed transmission. In terms of handling, this car corners extremely well, and its brakes are exceptional. I used to own an S class Mercedes AMG (which I bot when new); that car was a high end, extremely fast car. This BMW is slow in comparison (nor as expensive!!!), but it's still faster than many other cars. You owe it to yourself to take the 530e for a test drive. After running it though its paces, I'm confident that you'll be impressed.

My review still stands true for 2020
I still stand by the original review after 2019. This car is one I have turned down offers on. The smoothness of its operation and ride makes me feel I now have found my 'forever' car. I personally hand wash it, and keep it checked over at the dealership. Long trips are comfortable, and it stays in showroom condition. What's not to like about this car??? I have not found out. I still regard the car as one of the best automobile investments I ever made.

BWM Worth the Price for 3 Cars in One
Great luxury car and worth the investment. Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro modes make this car feel like owning three different cars. Each one engaging in its own right. I'm blown away by this car's ability to effortlessly accelerate and sustain speeds in Sport mode. It continues to pile on the torque while getting north of most legal speed limits. Ride is smooth and handling is superb. Comfort mode gives you the luxury ride and stability you'd expect from a BMW and when not looking to blow past people on the freeway. Eco Pro gives you the tools to best conserve fuel when driving in city and stop and go traffic. Fuel economy is in the low 30's MPG on the freeway - lows 20's MPG in the city. Interior is very comfortable and technology are accommodating and helpful. iDrive system takes some getting used to but offers engaging and cool tech views of your car's performance and diagnostics. USB and Bluetooth Phone integration allow easy access to contacts and music. A pleasure to drive in any setting. An absolute joy on the open road!

Comfort and Performance Excel
The 530i Sedan has a very comfortable ride. We make long 500+ mile trips and the ride is amazing. With the standard 4 cylinder engine, the gas mileage is 37+ on trips. This is exceptional for a sedan. Traded in our 2011 528i, which we had super reliability, for the 2018 530i and are not disappointed again. We feel the front seats are comfortable for us. The controls take some time to get used to but having the 2011 528i made it less of a problem. We love the ride and comfort and are not looking to trade up any time soon. With just 85,000 miles, we are going strong. Our next car will probably be a BMW electric but currently very happy with our 530i.

The best car I've ever owned!
I wasn't a "BMW guy" before I bought this car. My wife has an M4 and we owned a Z4, and they're both great cars, but I never had a desire to own a BMW as a daily driver - and certainly not one that is the base model of the series with a 4 cyl engine. But after years of owning performance cars, the maintenance, insurance and gas bills (not to mention the nagging guilt of my carbon footprint), I was looking for something a little more practical that wasn't boring. I found it. I drove models with the larger engines, but the 530i X-Drive had plenty of pep and I couldn't justify spending the extra money for hp and torque that years of experience told me I'd hardly ever use. The cabin is spacious, laid out well, and QUIET! I've averaged nearly 30mpg combined and recently got right at 40mpg in Economy mode with the cruise set at 75 on a trip from St. Louis to Chicago. Braking is smooth and powerful. Handling is firm and confident, but always provides a comfortable ride. The car is truly a joy to drive. My only complaint - and it's a small one - is the base entertainment system. Cars in this segment shouldn't require an upgrade to have a good stereo and things like Apple Car Play, but again, I couldn't justify what BMW wants to charge you for the Harmon Kardon or Bang and Olufsen systems.

Glitches outweigh the good!
Good MPG and performance for a turbo4. Since 3 months old there has been a software defect that numerous BMW dealerships have been unable to resolve. The system registers an issue with the passenger restraint system and has me schedule a service appointment. The interior is supple and the technology when working is on par with every car outside of Tesla. The interior space is good for 4 people comfortably, but the center tunnel hinders the rear middle seats legroom tremendously. This is my 2nd BMW with run flats and they continue to underwhelm me with constant loss of air pressure. I'd call this normal due to climate change, but my other vehicles hold air pressure under the same elements. Overall, I like the car but to me reliability matters and being able to compare this to my numerous Lexus vehicles leaves me feeling somewhat let down that BMW cannot improve their technical flaws.

BMW's Feature/Technolgy Lottery
Like many, I didn't need this vehicle - I wanted it. I owned two Hyundai Genesis sedans before this BMW 540i and was considering a new Genesis G80 Sport instead. I didn't and don't regret a moment of Genesis ownership. I can recommend them highly and without hesitation. Still, I was drawn to the German luxury sedan mystique. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. So I explored carefully and ended up ordering and writing a check 2018 BMW 540i. At MSRP, my very fully optioned $72,500 BMW was $16,000 more than the Genesis G80 3.3t Sport that I was considering. I knew that there was a steep factor of diminishing returns, but I was willing pay the price to experience what was heavily promoted to be the joy of BMW driving and ownership. The joy of BMW driving has been largely fulfilled. My 540i is, in many (but not all) ways a wonderful car. However, the joy of BMW ownership and my respect for the BMW brand has sunk to a point that I thought unimaginable. I will try to explain. My Genesis ownership made me accustomed to and in some ways, reliant upon several advanced safety and convenience features. Chief among them was Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Warning systems. Thus, I was careful to opt for (and pay $3,400) for the two BMW packages (Driving Assistance and Driving Assistance Plus) that provide these features which, by the way, worked flawlessly and were standard on the Genesis. The BMW Blind Spot Warning system is functional, but differs greatly from that in the Genesis. In addition to the visible warning in the affected outside rear-view mirror, a Genesis delivers an audible warning if the turn signal in the affected direction is activated. The BMW is silent. Asking BMW how the activate the audible warning, I was told that it did not exist because BMW engineers deemed that to be a distraction. It most certainly is (I thought to myself). I wanted that “distraction”. That was the point! Far worse yet however, was/is the Front-Rear Cross Traffic/Pedestrian Alert System. Put plainly, this piece of $3,400 safety technology in my 2018 BMW 540i is of no use. It’s level of vigilance is laughable. Any reliance on a warning of traffic approaching and/or crossing your path when backing out of a parking space virtually assures me of T-boning the crossing vehicle. An approaching pedestrian would likely suffer much more. In other words, my BMW fails to provide a warning of approaching traffic. It can’t even detect traffic that is already behind my car! My BMW dealer and the area’s BMW regional service manager and BMW USA in New Jersey stand behind the statement that my vehicle is “operating as designed”. They all stand firm in this regard while BMW’s own online video demonstration of this feature says otherwise. Because BMW USA and my BMW dealer have deemed my car to be “operating as designed”, They have also tagged it as ineligible for further repairs in this regard. Astonishingly , when confronted with the evidence of their own demonstration video, BMW was comfortable telling me that not all vehicles perform identically and performance can vary depending on the build date and more. Thus, because others report that their BMW 5-series cars do function as expected in this regard and as BMW is comfortable telling me that all cars cannot be expected to perform similarly (or, I suppose, as engineered) BMW expects me to be satisfied with the fact that I lost the BMW FEATURE-TECHOLOGY LOTTERY. A sad state of affairs and an example of corporate arrogance. Be sure to test ALL of the features and technologies in your new BMW BEFORE taking delivery. Afterwards, it may be too late!

Moonbeam takes me away!
I have named my new BMW - Moonbeam - and it is truly the best car I have ever owned. This may not be fair - as I have driven trucks all my life - but when I finally decided to get a nice car, I knew that I wanted a NICE car! I diligently researched vehicles for many months - evaluating Mercedes, Lexus, Maserati, Cadillac and Infiniti. I ended with my BMW 540i X Drive - and I could not be happier. It is most known for the extraordinary driveability - but the elegance of the car, the amazing interior, the incredible nav system and so much more, completely roped me in. I am loading hundreds and hundreds of songs onto my 20 gig hard drive media center - and still discovering more and more amenities that I did not even know existed. I am very proud of myself that I made such a wise (and perfect) decision.

Outstanding car
Performance, engine, handling, comfort, luxury...all in one car
Fun, comfortable, and zippy but the options add up
I bought the 540i after having an M3 for the past 20 years. While I loved my M3, it became a maintenance nightmare and I needed something to replace it that would still be fun to drive, a little more comfortable, and have more room. I got the 540i with M5 sport package and brakes, parking assistant, driving assistant I. I also got the multi-contour seats and the Harmon-Kardon radio. The car had some things I didn't want but came with this particular car (the what I call "call batman" light which is shining the BMW logo on the ground from the door when you open it, the $50 first aid kit (come on - tiny with bandages and that's about it), and leather dashboard. What I like so far: the ride is comfortable, and the car is still sporty. Not as sporty or nimble as the M3, but the 6-cylinder provides good acceleration that still makes the car fun to drive, especially in Sport mode. I took the car on a fast, curvy road with traffic (Highway 17 for those who know it around Santa Cruz to San Jose) and I was happy with the performance. The front seats are cavernous - which is great because I have a 21 year old 6'-1" 280 lb son who did not fit in the M3. I love the 360 degree camera and the blind spot indicators. I wanted the multi-contour seats because I read they were the best in terms of adjustments. And they are except it took me a couple months to get the adjustment right - there's too much to adjust so it was too easy to lean too far back, or have the seat too high, or the lumbar too high or too much, etc. I wasn't comfortable, but kept adjusting little by little until it finally felt good. The self-parking feature is great when it works, but turns out to parallel park, you need to park having a car in the front and in the back (it needs to find a car in the front, so if it's a space where you are parking in front of a car but there's no car in front of that, it won't work). I like the heated seats, but don't understand why it didn't also give the option for a heated steering wheel (or maybe that's an option, but my car didn't have it). The auto climate control works fine, the auto rain sensing windshield wiper setting works fine, and I like the run flat tires (already got a nail in a tire). There's a ton of room in the trunk. Things I don't like: like another reviewer, the speedometer is off once it gets above 60 mph - when it says 80, it's really going about 75. For a car as large as this is, I wish there was more leg room in the rear - perhaps I lose more with the multi-contour seats, but there's not quite enough for someone 6'. The Volvo S90 had lots of rear leg room, but it wasn't as fun to drive. The navigation system isn't very good - keeps taking me weird ways to get places - I've switched back to using Waze on my cell phone. Some people might like the heads-up display, but I found it annoying and turned it off. Update: had the car for a year. Went in four times already for low coolant level but they can't find anything. Light came on that emergency call system is not working. There's a backup battery for emergencies apparently and it's failing on a lot of cars, two months to get it ordered from Germany. Doesn't affect the driving but annoying to have the message on the dashboard covering up my mileage indicator. UPDATE: The good: * Love the seats. I bought the higher end 21 adjustable. At first I didn't like them because there was too much to adjust and couldn't get comfortable, but once I got it right, they are great. They also hold my 300+ adult son. I never get a backache. * Love driving the car. I have the 540i with the 6 cylinder which is zippy enough. I also have the M package. * Love the parking package. While I never use the parking feature, the cameras that come with it are great. You can "see" the car from above and it indicates when you are getting too close to something. The bad: * About 6 months after I got the car, the coolant was low. Went in because I couldn't get the cap off, the dealer filled it up. Was ok for a while, but then happened again and then more frequently. I brought it to the dealer multiple times asking them to find the problem and they said there was no problem. More recently, it happened every 2 weeks, brought it back and they finally found the issue. * Car is now 4+ years old and things starting to break. The steering wheel motor just stopped working (can't move up/down/back/forth). It has another weird issue that it's a bit sluggish when I start it from stop and has automatically shifted itself into neutral even though I had it in drive. Going back to see what's wrong, but it's no longer under warranty :( I'm afraid this is going to be an expensive car to maintain. There are lots of automated things that can stop working.

Maybe OK To lease
This was an awesome car until I recieved the news that my 2018 M550 with 4,340 miles on it needed a new motor as the factory one had such damage even though it was broken in by the book and was babied. What the best part was BMW will only replace it with a remanufactured one destroying resale value if you do not drive your car into the ground. So if you are considering this auto I would suggest that you review some of the BMW forms and then only lease the auto and wouldn’t buy it. The sad part is BMW really does have a great car here. The car is super fast and at the same time rides like it is on air. Just to bad when issues come up like this on a new car they were not handled with the consumer in mind.

A luxury diesel
I traded in my 2017 530i for a 2019 540D once it became available. Both cars have the same features (I upgrade to all available offerings) and both are really comfortable and easy to drive. The 540D, however, is much peppier and it gets much better gas mileage. I drive mostly on the highway (between LA and San Diego) and get typically 700 miles per 17.4-gallon tank. Further, the torque of the diesel, which is about 80% greater than the 530i, allows a much smoother ride as there is much less downshifting for passing or hills. So I get the peppiness of the 540i with gas mileage much greater than either the 530i and 540i and even greater than the 530e. About my only issue with the car is that I would prefer more comfort (especially leg room) in the back seat although it is certainly adequate. My wife has a 2017 Lexus ES350 and the back seat in that car has much more leg room than the BMW 5 series although its performance doesn't compare with BMW. With caveat on the back seat, I would recommend this car as an optimum vehicle for lots of driving.

Best Car Ever Owned
I was looking for a car with more power (400+), but can be used as daily commuter as well. I am not a track driver yet, but for the daily roads this is one of the best cars I have ever owned. I just traded this with my S550 and I don't regret, so far. This is the first BMW that I felt a great connection as well, both stylistically (even though the styling in conservative, the more you look at the care, the more you get attracted to..it's hard to explain) as well as the power and torque and exhaust note are just enough to keep my senses happy, but not waking up my neighbors, as I move stealthy in the early AM hours, to go to work..awesome power, technology and well-planted car without being too weird and showy. Also I wanted the 4wheel-drive traction as well, so this makes it perfect. I would have waited for an M5 if the M5 didn't cost 25000 more...and when I am tired of this, I may end up buying a GTR perhaps, but for now the M559i xdrive feels awesome with the mature V8bi-turbo feels great....very nice.

Uncomfortable Front Seating
Changed my 2015 528xi for new 2018 530xi. Improved handling, acceleration, steering, shifting, braking. This is what I feel BMW does best. Unfortunately, there are some serious negatives. The front seats are very uncomfortable. These are true bucket seats. There is a central depression in the seat bottom and the sides come up to hold you in place. However, they press on your hips and after an hour or so, can be annoying. I am 5'10, 180 pounds. There should be a choice of seating. In regards to the electronics, I have to say that the distance controls when parking are great, as they were in my previous car. Downside here is that there are too many sub menus, pull downs, too difficult to adjust things. Standard radio speakers just adequate, should be excellent at this price. Why the need to get the upgraded stereo? Sound was better in a Ford Fusion I recently rented. In my old car, there was a knob on the central dash to control heat/cold thru upper vents. On the new one, have to go to climate menu to adjust. I guess my main complaint regards the seating. Performance in driving excellent. One other comment, it has a tracking device that can be engaged to steer the car, as long as your hand is on the wheel. This does not work well. It appears to operate where there are clear lines on the road. However, on a turn, it wanders from one side of the land and then corrects to the other, requiring constant driver input.

High 40's mpg
Love the car to this point. A couple of quirky electronic things happened. When I drive the car w/o a passenger the seat belt alarm for the passenger seat goes off after about 10 miles. The charging mode switched w/o my changing anything to "slow" instead of fast charge. Dealer said this happens -it's like a computer and things change for no apparent reason. OK after a reset. I'm a little worried about being out of warranty and having to pay for this electronic reset. The seat belt check took a full day. Rather than pay for that I'll buckle the seat w/o anyone in it!

Even Better Than My Last 5 Series
I traded my 2014 535i on a new 540i a few months ago. I did so with mixed feelings; the old car was running well and was dead reliable, but with the warranty running out, it was time. My new 540i is an improvement in almost every way. It’s more comfortable to drive and rides better. The interior is richer looking and the iDrive system is more intuitive and easier to use. I do have a couple of minor gripes though. Apple Car Play, which really should not be an extra cost option on a car costing nearly $68,000, works only intermittently, and I have had to visit the dealer over it (been working well since the visit though). Likewise, the automatic trunk release has stopped working occasionally (though the same dealer visit seems to have solved that problem for now). I’ve talked to other owners of the new 5-Series and a number of them have mentioned minor electronics issues. At the same time, most of us agree that when you get behind the wheel on a good road, the car is terrific. A year later, the electronics issues have been totally resolved and the car performs beautifully. I just returned from a 600 mile trip and have no complaints at all. In addition, my highway gas mileage runs around 30-31 mpg, which is not bad for a car like this. UPDATE: I bought this car new and have put 48,000 miles on it. It runs and looks like new, and, aside from regular servicing, the only repairs I've had to make are such normal items as tires and brakes. I intend on keeping it for a very long time. One point though, for those interested in buying a used BMW: find a good BMW mechanic and maintain the car according to factory specs. If you do, it will reward you. BMW's are not cheap to maintain, but if you let things go, service and repairs will get very expensive very quickly.

Much better than previous models
The size of this model is much roomier than previous. Car is very smooth to drive and ride comfort is excellent. Car is very close to perfect if you are looking for a high quality 4 door sedan with great gas mileage.

Uncomfortable Front Seats, too much technology?
Just turned in a 2015 5 series sedan and replaced with a 2018 S series with similar options. The bucket seats are very uncomfortable, with poor lower back support. I wish I noticed on the quick test drive. After a 50 minute drive, had an aching back. Is it me, or do these cars have way too much technology in them? Maybe BMW was too busy tweaking the tech to realize the front seats are horrible? I will probably need to get something to modify the seat so it is bearable on road trips over an hour.

530e, wonderful car with seriously annoying issues
Got a 2018 530e and love so much about the car. It drives like a dream and looks beautiful. I'm getting really great mileage as well. Two main problem areas: 1. The software is really bad. Backup camera doesn't work 20% of the time. The virtual dashboard also is on the fritz about 20% of the time. Less common is the touch display not working. All tend to self correct by turning the car off and then back on but seriously annoying. 2. BMW uses a plant based cellulose for the wiring housing and it turns out that this stuff is super delicious for rats. Yes, you read that right. Rats love climbing up into the warm engine compartment and chewing the heck out of the wiring housing. This cost me $2,000 out of pocket to fix. Look at some online message boards, it isn't an uncommon problem. BMW needs to fix this issue.

BMW M550i It's One Hot Car
I've leased three BMW 550 series from 2012-2018. The first two were pretty reliable although on one I had to have one of the injector port replaced. In January of 2018 I leased the third, an M550i Xdrive. It's nice looking, is pretty quick and it's fun to drive. I took possession in the winter and around April I noticed the AC didn't cool...just blew hot air. I took it in to the dealer who charged up the system and kept it for a week looking for leaks. Didn't find any. Car was returned and enjoyed great AC until late June. Just today (June 24th) the AC went from cold air to cool and finally warm in less than an hour. Now I have to make a long hot drive to bring the car back in to the dealer next week. I get a loaner but it's an inferior model (except for the AC). I've only had the car for 180 days but I'm already half way to officially being able to declare the vehicle a Lemon under Texas law. Two other annoying things are the music connection and the wireless charging. For music I mostly use Pandora through my iPhone X. The connection to the car is unreliable and I generally have to restart my phone to get it to play. I've used both the BMW app and Apple Car Play. I definitely wouldn't recommend the $300 Car Play option. The wireless charger is hit and miss as well. I've used two phones that are Qi charger capable and both sometimes work in the car and sometimes don't. They both charge perfectly on the wireless charger at home. In summary the car drives well, but the AC and the electronics problems make the car a poor choice if you're a driver who wants his $90,000 car to work as advertised. If you're wondering why I gave it two stars rather than one, it's because the AC problem doesn't matter in the winter.

Sure can sell you the car but not take care of you
The 2018 BMW m550 is a fun car to drive for the most part, but there are numerous instances of electronic or entertainment failures in the vehicle. Tire life span is poor and sure enough, that is dependant on your driving habits, but back tires didn't make it past 20k miles! I'm at 24k and the front tires need replacement. At about $450 a tire, that adds up a lot to the cost of maintenance. My biggest concern is with the dealership experience. They tout themselves as a luxury brand but are quite the opposite. I have owned two Mercedez Benz cars in the past and got lured into the BMW due to its horsepower appeal, but whereas Mercedes treated me with the utmost respect and provided what was expected from a luxury car, BMW is stingy, cheap, unprofessional and utterly terrible in customer service. These are very particular cars, so the option to take it to other shops is out of the question, but I have tried numerous dealerships in hopes that the original dealer from whom I bought the car was an abberation, but switching to another dealer didn't provide a better experience. When servicing your car, they never had a loaner available so they would always put you in a rental from Enterprise. So rather than a loaner BMW, they would send me off in a Hyundai Sonata or something, dirty, trashy and reaking of smoke. Yeah! You buy a $90,000 car and they stick you in a $18,000 rental that is filthy and dirty. The oposite of luxury. The few times I stayed on location waiting for the service, they made no attempt in communicating with me and provide updates on the service. Horrendous ownership experience.

Great performance horrible reliability
After owning several Mercedes and a few other cars sprinkled in (and getting tired of waiting on the E63s to clear the port) I decided to purchase an 18 M550i. The performance numbers and price seemed to be a no brained when compared to others cars in this category. (The E43 is a horrible bee buzzing V6.) The buying transaction and dealing the the dealerships was horrible. Taking delivery at the test center was flawless and pretty exciting. Now the troubles begin. By the time I got home from the 10 mile drive from the performance center I already had a crack in the sidewalk of a tire. I was told sorry, it’s yours now. I guess I missed it on delivery. So after that, a few pot hole induced flat tires (from run flats), two oil leaks, one coolant leak, a totally new front bumper after all the front sensors went out, a rear seat belt that locked up and would not release, a recall that took 2 weeks, loaners cars with no gas, a car that thinks something was behind it 1% of the time and therefore would not back up by violently locking up the breaks and sounding audible alarms, an automated cruise control that bounced between the lines and wouldn’t stay straight, and probably a few other things I forget about, we traded it in. I also need to mention that it is not a user friendly car either. For example, the seat adjustment buttons are in a hard to reach place. The memory seat presets are in a hard to see place below the door modeling making it hard to find when entering the car. The rear seat leather feels very plastic and cheap. Now a few good things. Hands down the performance in this car is unmatched in this price point. The touch screen navigation is awesome. The wireless CarPlay is great but the cars infotainment system is so good and laid out I never used it. The ability to alter the car with after market parts (changing the front grill, adding different aide vents) is so much easier than other manufacturers. In the end the car is a good performer in its class but very bad at reliability and ease and comfort for a daily driver.

Like this car
Much more comfortable, but less sporty than prior Car (2010 M3). Don’t drive as aggressively in it, which is good for my age. Lots of technology improvements over old car.

Best BMW EVER
I am not an expert by any means and don't work for Car& Driver but I have had :1-750IL, 3 - 550i's and one 540D , all four door cars. They all feel very safe! By far the 540d is the best of all, I did add the X drive on the 540D and not the rest. The handling is the best of the bunch when adding the M Package . as far as the performance goes at the start the 550's have it beat but after 30MPH the Twin Turbos kick in and hold on as my family says. The handling on curves is unreal and again I say better than any previous model I have ever owned. The options I chose are the best, lane assist, follow too closely, drive by itself handling ,lane departure, navigation, I don't use the gesture control very much. I now own a X 5 35 Diesel and and 540D Sedan and could not be happier .If you own one it you would be insane to get rid of it with the bulletproof engine it has ,not to mention the Fuel Mileage .My family calls it the Beast and it is pretty much true. Encinitas BMW family.

Best but Overlooked
I must say this car is absolutely amazing it’s the third BMW I’ve owned previously I’ve owned two different X5 models 3.0/4.4 as well I’ve owned a Benz AMG 55 car which was extremely fast this but not always confident. This car has the ability of all those cars blended in one minus trunk space. However if you find it equipped properly with a dynamic handling package it actually mimics the M car and can be lots of fun to drive. The ride quality is superb I should’ve upgraded for the Bowers and Wilkins I took the Harman. The hybrid battery does not give you long range but it does a remarkable job of boosting the performance & responsiveness if you’re fortunate enough to be able to plug it in at work or at home you could go a week without using gas or very minimal amounts. If this was BMWs attempt to use me as a guinea pig for their evolving technology I approve. For sure when this car is released as 700+ horsepower all electric Tesla fighter I will build & buy it again! I am a true fan of BMW they are drivers cars they make you better drivers because they’re so compliant. Best money spent you can’t go wrong

some items need help sold it, have XT5 now
Seat belt recievers in front seats are to low, hard to connect belts. Door sills by front seats are to high, which makes it hard to get in and out. Seat settings are not automatic, you can set the seat the way you want them, but you have to push 1 or 2 on the door to activate, this is going backward if you ask me. The last six cars I have had all had seat setting that happened automatic when getting in or out of the car. You need to get side view option as there is a blind spot when pulling into left lane, I have to be very careful, side mirror needs help. The 540 I is a good driving and handling car. This is my first BMW. always had top GM or Lincolns in the past. I guess all cars have some good and bad points.

I hate this car
The electronics are just like your phone! Ever notice how sometimes your phone has a mind of it's own? You reboot and it forgot your settings? It has no idea what you're saying? I doesn't always work? Welcome to the BMW version of your phone. The entertainment and voice recognition features range from competant to infuriating. Manage your expectations nice and low and you will be fine. I finally got a BMW "genius" at the dealership to go over it with me after arguing with the service tech who insisted I wasn't understanding the car. The genius confirmed that my car works "ass backward". It thinks there's a passenger when there isn't, doesn't think there's one when there is... nothing is consistent and all problems are intermittent. The center console. Not aligned correctly so you have to slam it to close it. Rear passenger side door does not always open when you unlock it. Sometimes it takes several tries of locking and unlocking to open the door. This can be a problem if you have children. Camera's flip on when you are parking and get near the curb... until they don't. Since you use them to judge distance... enjoy hitting the curb (I haven't yet but it;s just a matter of time). There are so many more issues ... dealer can't fix any of them. Don't buy this.

10513 and 7408 miles on Two (2) different 540i
I bought two of these cars. Both have extremely inaccurate speedometers that the dealer nor BMW will correct; 4% FAST. Both have the annoying auto start stop system that after July 2017 is on by default each time you start the car. Neither the dealer or BMW will disable this system and it makes parking the car a major headache with the engine stopping and starting with brake pedal action. Worst of all both of my cars are “using” engine coolant. My car has required two reservoirs full in 10513 miles ; my wife’s car one reservoir full in 7408 miles. You can’t smell coolant so it’s leaking internally. Am awaiting a recall just like BMW did for 1.6 million vehicles leaking coolant through the EGR system. Other than these things the cars are nice, comfortable and performance is top notch. 3-series cars drive and handle better based on the one I drove as a loaner during my 10k mile scheduled service. These cars feel mushy in comparison. The tire pressure monitoring system is also extremely annoying because once you put the correct amount of air in the tires, you have to reset it and drive 5 miles for it to shut up telling you that the air pressure is low. I’ve had Lincolns that were just as good as this car and not nearly as annoying with the technology overkill. BMW also needs to learn to listen to their customers and put them first rather than ignore what they say, and they need to learn to package options like US automakers have been doing. It’s a shame that blindspot monitoring is a option rather than part of a package or standard on a $70,000 car. If I had it to do over I would have kept my 2011 Lincoln MKS, and bought my wife a new Lincoln Continental Black Label. 5/2020: I have not changed my mind on either of these two cars. The speedometer still has not been fixed and BMW refuses to fix it. I had to buy third party software to disable the extremely annoying auto/stop start feature so I can keep it always OFF. Good news is that the problem with low coolant turned out to be from a mistake at the factory with them not being filled and bled properly. BMW issued a technical service bulletin on this issue and both cars received the proper fill/bleed of coolant, and there's been no more problems with that. I did find yet another annoying issue where you can't open the door and move the car. When I tried to do that it threw itself into park and started raising all sorts of hell at me. So much for doing that to try and park better! I wish I had never seen either of these two cars and I will guarantee you that these will be the first and last BMWs I ever buy. Ultimate Driving Machine my a**! It's the car that wants to drive you versus you drive it!

Car and driver is right
Truly an amazing car but no soul. Soft ride is cool in "comfort mode" but thus is a BMW I want to actually drive the car, feel some bumps and know how close to the limit I am in a turn. Maybe this is the first step in leading us to driverless cars. If you don't have to think or feel, why steer?

Yep it’s the ultimate drive
If you are going to drive the car the way it was meant to be driven then make sure not to get all weather tires or your speed is limited to 130mph, also get the M sport brakes. The car is super reliable considering the amount of technology in the car. Very safe and confident inspiring drive.

Favorite Car Ever
Sometimes an automotive manufacturer just gets everything right. I have owned this vehicle for 4.5 years and still love it. i normally turn cars every 3 years, but can't bring myself to part with this one. This car is FUN to drive, especially in sport mode, but also in comfort mode. The tech is great and everything just makes sense and works. There's a couple of stupid tech features like hand gestures that I never use. The car is extremely comfortable and loaded with a luxury feel. I haven't had any problems with this vehicle.

I was always a Mercedes girl
I never even considered a BMW since I loved my last 5 cars which were all a Benz. I finally sat in a BMW and instantly fell in love with that car. This is now my 2nd BMW and do not think I will ever change.
BMW 530e - just not a reliable car.
I've been continually disappointed with BMW dealer service. My vehicle went (was towed) into this dealer for a high voltage battery waring light. It took around 4 days and me having to call the dealer vice them calling me to get the full run down on the vehicle’s issues. A faulty high voltage battery on a plug-in hybrid does not seem like something that will be fixed quickly, but I was not offered a loaner or any other acknowledgement that my car would be in the shop for a long time. After the car had been there for 10 days and they confirmed it was a repair covered under warranty (8yrs/80,000 miles for the battery - my car is at 27,500 miles) I was told the parts would be around three weeks. No calls, no updates in those three weeks. I called the dealer at the three-week mark and was told they didn’t have the parts and they “had no way to give me a timeline for the shipment and repair”. Facing an indefinite amount of time without my car and again there was no concern on the dealer’s part or offer for alternative transportation. I had to call and press to get a rental car authorized (still no loaner), a process that took several days and elevating to the service manager. I received an Enterprise rental, a worn-out Toyota that smelled of smoke and vibrated above 50 mph. Now transportation is transportation, but when I pay to own and drive a BMW 5 series, a tired smelly rental is hardly comparable especially when facing an unidentified amount of time for my car’s repair. Rental aside, I was NEVER able to reach my advisor or the service manager on the same day I called or texted. They NEVER called me first with news or updates. Completely frustrated with the process after nearly 3 months, I finally got my call returned to let me know the parts had been shipped. The total time without my car was 91 days, and I experienced a general “we don’t care” attitude from this dealer and BMW North America the entire time. My BMW 530e has spent over 115 days of the last year in the shop for a recalled turbo, a failed A/C compressor, and a failed High voltage battery. I can only conclude BMW does not make a quality product anymore and in my experience, BMW service centers don’t care about their customers. BMW sold, never coming back to this dealer or brand.

Mercedes buyer
After owning several Mercedes I elected to venture once more into German engineering and get a 2nd car for my winter home. Between the E class and the 5 series I hemmed and hawed, the Mercedes is luxury at its finest..but to be honest I liked the lines of the BmW somewhat better. So I pulled the trigger on a 530i xdrive, and I’m definitely not sorry I did. Mpg is coming in at 37mpg 35% city/ 65% hwy. The bang audio unit is outstanding HUD is clear and bright on sunny days Acceleration is quick but not what I’d call fast Brakes are excellent Handling is excellent Seats and leather appointments are excellent Ride is stiffer than a Mercedes but it feels more surefooted than a coupe. Original Msrp in 2018 was 70k Buy one new or pre owned you won’t be sorry and I think you might be drawn back to the commercials of “the ultimate driving machine” and agree :)
