Best used car value anywhere

I bought my first e34 body style on Ebay because it was too cheap to pass up. It turned out to be the best car I had ever owned. The car had 135K and ran like a new car. The handling was indescribable. The car was totaled in an accident and it saved my 1yr. old and I from serious injury. I now have a 1995 540i Sport and would not give it up for a million bucks. (Actually yes I would)

Big Disappointment

The '95 540i is among the last understated, genuinely beautiful cars from BMW. It is tremendously powerful and the routine maintenance consists of little more than oil changes and brake jobs. The downfall is the transmission. It is a sealed unit with "lifetime" fluid (complete nonsense). It _will_ fail at 100k mi. and cost $5k to replace. The car is worth $4k. My trans has disgorged it's fluid on the driveway fully 4 different times. Each episode requires a limping trip to the shop and a bill of $300. On the road, the car is heavy and ponderous and not in the least bit fun to drive. Brakes have only two modes: off and full lock up. Zero finesse. Big disappointment.

First time Bimmer owner and now I see what James Bond was likin'. I got mine used with 114000 miles on it and it is in tremendous condition. Well cared for. Love the mileage and the power. Corners like a dream. Live in Colorado and it is cool in the hills. No outlay for repairs yet...but I'm sure they are coming. A hoot to drive.

More Than A Status Symbol

Purchased used and have put 138K on this car (168K total) and loving every minute of it. Sure, it has had its share of repairs - but you have got to expect some maintenance on a 10 year old vehicle.Quality is outstanding - parts are expensive but they are not that cheap stuff you find on other cars. Question is - how long before it totally breaks so that I can justify buying a new one? A BMW is not just a status symbol. It is a statement to other (cheaper) manufacturers that we will not be fooled by inferior quality. Funny thing is that my friends still buy cheap american cars every 3 years and don't understand why they still have a car payment.

Great car. Has the 6-speed transmission. Had the engine block replaced with the Nikasil recall before I bought it, so only 65k on the engine. It handles remarkably well for a car its size. Only BMW can make a sedan perform like this one does. It's a shame that the new E60's are so ugly.
