Great handling, nice car overall, but…

In summary, this is a great handling car that has me scratching my head sometimes and saying why did they do something this way. Whereas all of the Japanese cars I have owned have been very intuitive and everything worked as expected, I can't say the same about the 2020 Audi Q3. Pros: Burns regular gas, handling is solid and secure, good acceleration and braking, roomy interior is laid out nicely for a smaller SUV, touch screen, the transmission is smooth and responsive, seats are good, looks nice. Cons: Remote start not available for cold weather warm-up, 2 driver memory seat only on prestige model, many features like tripometer are only available via confusing steering wheel buttons that require multiple steps to view, infotainment (radio, nav) system occasionally locks up and I need to turn the car off to reset, can't lock the car without having key in hand, no dedicated radio presets (common in all cars now), need to turn on rear window defogger and heated mirrors separately, takes some getting used to finding things that are normally easy to find on other cars, no mobile phone APP for this model. I like the car a lot and would buy this car again, but it takes some time to get used to and some things should be changed on future models.

Cute, quality and sporty

This is a great SUV , its comfortable, quick and loaded with quality. Looked at the XC40 and the interior can not compare with the Q3, the Tech system on the Q3 is much more user friendly too. Lastly there is an actual arm rest the moves and works unlike so many others.

Traded it in for an X1

I owned this car for about a month and I liked it, wanted to love it. I'll start with what I liked. The tech is great, the stop/start cruise control is amazing and the lane control assist is helpful without being too intrusive. I REALLY liked the blind spot monitoring which distinguishes itself from almost every other manufacturer and should be the standard for all such systems. It uses a large (~2"x1.5") LED panel on the inner side of the mirror housing to alert you to cars coming into or sitting in your blindspot. It'll alert you by turning on and then will flash quickly if you drift or turn on your blinker in that direction. It makes it much easier to see the alert in your peripheral vision but it's not bright enough to be annoying. You can also adjust the brightness. The Q3 is a real head turner especially in the higher trim levels and w/ the 20" wheels. The Bang and Olufsen stereo is brilliant, the screen is beautiful and the virtual cockpit is a joy to behold. The seats are also very good, they feel quite natural to sit in especially for long drives. The Bad, starting with the worst parts: The transmission. IT IS A DOG. It hard shifts constantly when driving around town (sometimes on the highway too), especially at lower speeds for instance when you make a 90 degree right turn, requiring you to nearly stop. Also the throttle tip in is poor. You just never know exactly what you're going to get when you put your foot on the pedal. I found myself constantly thinking about the gas pedal in order to keep from snapping my head back and forth when applying the throttle. It just wasn't fun. I'm sure the turbo lag played a role here too but I'm blaming the transmission because I owned a GTI with the same engine and I never had these issues. If you're not a car person you might not notice or care about this but I found it very undesirable. I ended up trading it in for an X1 which has nearly equal specs for engine and transmission but the X1 is smooth as butter. Acceleration is brisk and fairly linear. The engine/transmission are paired brilliantly. It's just in an altogether different class and really puts the Q3 to shame. The X1 also has a more pleasant engine hum and exhaust note. The Q3 just sounds harsh. The Q3 has fake exhausts, as in the exhaust is ported out below the bumper at about 45 degrees without going through the bumper as in the other style of (equally terrible) fake exhausts. I found that when parked, exhaust would start to circulate through the car after a few minutes unless it was windy outside. It made me woozy. I know this can potentially happen with any car but I've never had this issue so consistently with a vehicle and it really detracts from the experience because sometimes you want to just sit in the car and relax while you finish your podcast or audiobook. I think exhaust just pools beneath the car because of the short and low shooting exhaust. There's also a lot of hard plastic. The interior appears sumptuous when looking at the dashboard or glancing at the seats but as you settle in you notice a lot of chintzy bits, like the flimsy plastic paddle shifters or the flimsy control stalks on the steering wheel. These parts are straight off my old Volkswagen. I know the Q3 is entry level luxury but the X1 feels much more solid on the inside. Audi PLEASE fix the transmission this vehicle and then maybe we can talk.

Disappointed in Audi

I owned an audi A4 since 2009 and the car was perfect. I decided it was time to upgrade with kids growing up. I'll simply get to the point, I'm very disappointed with Audi for putting this vehicle out. The driving experience is very poor. I love the way the car looks, both inside and out. The tech is great and the screen inside is beautiful. Great space for this size vehicle. The problem with this car is its transmission and overall poor driving experience. The upshifts are inconsistent and jerky. The down shifts are consistently jerky. Especially at low gears. On the highway, you can feel the upshifts through your whole body. I've read a bunch of professional reviews to see if I was the only one - clearly I am not. Read Aaron Gold's Audi 2019 Q3 review in automobilemag.com - that accurately describes my feeling in more detail. Again I'm very disappointed. Quite frankly I'd be disappointed to spend $25K on this car let alone the $40K I bought it for. I write this review to help others with information before they buy.

While it is a high price to consider when purchasing a sub compact SUV (compare to the Tiguan) it has so many upgraded features and the styling is unmatched. We absolutely love our new Q3 and while it cost a bit more than the top of the line Tiguan, it feels like you get so much more. If you are in the market for a German Small SUV, I would highly recommend taking this out for a spin!
