In 2021 I was in the market to purchase an SUV after my beloved 2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring met its demise shortly after hitting 200k. I had heard great things about Acura’s and thought I’d check out the RDX. Went originally to look at a 2018 RDX, but it had sold that morning. The salesman pointed me towards a CPO 2019 RDX that had just come in off a lease. I took it for a spin and was generally impressed with it. Went ahead and made the purchase without looking at reviews online. And I wish I had before signing that dotted line… Within the first week I had my dash light up and brought it to the dealer. Mind you the vehicle was still under warranty. Was told the camera needed to be reset and it would be $2k not covered. They fixed it for free after some negotiation. But I already had a bad taste in my mouth. Then a few months later I experienced my first “limp mode” where the RDX loses all power. The second experience with that was when I was traveling on the highway, passing vehicles, and I watched my speed immediately drop from 80 to 30 to 0. Absolute terrifying and I was thankful there was a shoulder to pull over. Dealers response? “We can’t fix something we can’t see”. Although it’s a known service bulletin. The infotainment system is a nightmare. Had to have it re-wired and it still fades in and out, and it has high pitched “beeps” that play at random. Another service bulletin. The sunroof “pops” when driving over uneven services or pulling out of a driveway where there’s a gap between the two road surfaces. The dealer “fixed” it, but it continues to be a problem and response was “oh well”. The passenger side headlight blew a fuse within our first year together, and in the past 3+ years I’ve had to replace that same fuse more times than I can count on both hands. I’ve just given up. Dealer was “baffled” and only remedy they came up with was replacing the unit. $2k just for the unit - with zero guarantee if it would solve the issue. My other issues include the lane departure that you have to remember to shut off EVERY time you get in the vehicle. Leave it on and it will be a headache. I don’t need my vehicle braking for me when it senses an imaginary line in front of the vehicle. Or pulling me into a pothole I am trying to avoid. Or somehow determining that there is a center line on a dirt road (during mud season…nightmare). Next there’s the fact that the steering wheel will always be tilted slightly towards the right. No matter how many alignments it has undergone, the issue remains. I’ve spoken to Honda and Acura owners of 2019 models that have the same complaints. So that’s not RDX specific. Then there is how rough the car shifts, especially noticeable when speeding up to merge onto the highway. For a “sport SUV” it’s quite disappointing. My Mazda had much smoother shifts. A known issue with these vehicles is the rear window imploding. Do yourself a favor and do a quick search for it. Acura will not cover it (unless you are in Canada). It hasn’t happened to me (yet) but I know someone who had it happen and the glass will forever jingle around in your tailgate as they cannot remove all the broken glass. My last complaint, this vehicle has a fuel pump recall that was announced in fall of 2023, and in December 2024 I am still unable to get it fixed. Was told by dealer that there aren’t enough parts and they can only allocate them to those who have experienced an issue or when they get traded in. Now that I got the bad out of the way…it is a stylish looking vehicle, the seats are comfortable, visibility is great, it’s a smooth ride, and when it’s working, the tech is great. I love the large screen. Cargo space is ok, the rounded shape of the back-end makes it a little difficult loading larger “boxy” items. The AWD system is incredible, I drive a lot, deal with snow and mud season - and the RDX just tears through it. It’s probably the sole reason why I have continued to endure all the headache and frustration. I purchased it with 20k and have about 105k on it 3+ years later. The original brake pads lasted to 100k, which was impressive. Aside from routine maintenance (and the items listed above) it has generally been reliable. The original battery is still kicking as well (I might jinx myself). If I didn’t have the negative experiences with the RDX, I would say it’s a great vehicle. Unfortunately, I can’t say that and would definitely not recommend at least the 2019 model to anyone looking for a headache free vehicle. There is a Facebook group dedicated to owners of the 3rd generation RDX that I would highly suggest joining and reading through before purchasing. I wish I had.
