Used 2000 Volvo S80 Sedan Consumer Reviews
An OK car
This Volvo was just an OK car. Just was to many problems to over come the good looks.
Not a fan
Bought 1yr ago in Tewksbury Ma (Americar)-for $3000 more than they advertised it (web). I put 10k miles on the car in 1 yr. w/n 1 week-check engine&service lights on. Americar turned off.The lights returned after 5 days. Americar was not capable of fixing. It was above them (they admitted). Front/rear stabilizers had to b replacd w/n 1st month, needed replacing 8 mo. later. Steering grinded. Control module 4 steering wheel (radio-wipers-BLINKERS- HEADLIGHTS)shutdown. Going down steep hill-noises like car about 2 fall apart. Began revving very high @ stoplights. Engine shut down in park after revving & jolting. Last straw. Traded car in 1 week l8r.
Do not buy this car
Bought this car new. What a piece of junk. Interior fell apart had to be reupholstered. At 50000 miles the head gasket blew $3,000 fix.Other problems to numerous to list est. repair costs at 60000 miles - $10,000.Just trying to save someone else the same mistake.
The Last Volvo I Will Own
My S80 T6 is the seventh Volvo I have owned. This is also the last one I will purchase. At 31,000 miles the steering rack and most of the front suspension failed. Since the car was Volvo Certified these repairs were covered under warranty. However, the delays, fowl-ups and outright lies by the dealer service staff have forced me to demand the dealer (Transatlantic Motors in Hyannis, Massachusetts) buy back the car. The car is going on its sixth day out of service, primarily because of the service department's ineptitude in ordering parts properly. Frankly, I find more respect and consideration in the service department of the local Hyundai dealer.
It
I've owned more than 4 new Volvos I purchase my 2000 S80 used becaused the S80 new seemed a bit over priced. The 2000 S80 seems a bit noisy (excessive wind noise) at highway speed), not to sure about the transmission it behave "quirky". I am concerned about the longivity of this car. All my other Volvos I was able put at least 250000 miles without any problems
Fun in the Kansas sun!
Aside from the fact that Volvo has created vehicles that can be serviced primarily only at the dealer (where nothing is inexpensive), this is an awesome car. Combination city/hwy economy is 24mpg. She handles excellent in wet or dry conditions and it is by far the most comfortable car I have ever driven! I'd stay away from the T-6, but the 2.9L is exceptional.
Love my S80
At the risk of being premature in my evaluation, this is the best riding, quietest, most fun to drive car I have ever had. I knew Volvo was a quality automobile judging from my wife's 1991 940GLE. The dealer is great! I haven't had the need to have my car serviced yet, but judging from the superior service my wife has received, I feel I can look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Don Beyer.
S80 T6 after four years: Still happy
Our 2000 S80 T6 has over 70,000 miles and still feels and drives like a new car. I'm very pleased with this car. Note that I did purchase the extended warranty (up to 100K miles) from Volvo which turned out to be a good idea (it has paid for itself). After the 50,000 mile warranty expired, I've had to replace some DSTC parts, NAV system parts, and so on) all of which were adequately covered by the Volvo VIP plan. I will consider another S80 purchase in the future.
Fabulous Car, When It Is Working
Exceptional performance/style for the $. Nothing else competes with it in this price range. Unfortunately, it has HORRIBLE reliability. In 18 months the following was replaced: motor mount, ABS control unit, turn signal switch, brake rotors, oxygen sensor, mass flow sensor, door trim, upper strut mount (2 times), oil return line, strut assembly, ignition switch. Parts failed about every 2 months, and the parts always had to be special ordered. I was fortunate that it was under warranty. Be very careful about buying one used.
No problems here
I bought my 2000 model at the end of 99. I have only had routine maintenance visits. Great accelaration, good handling (love the STC), and the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in. The transmission has a kink shifting from 2nd to 3rd (it clunks under hard driving) and their is a driver side squak under the chassis. The audio system is awesome and it is great in snow or rain.
Great car for your money!!!
I guess with all cars you get bad ones and good ones. Mine was a good one I cant believe I can drive a luxury Vehicle for less than $8000. I have never sat in a seat so comfortable in this Volvo. You have so much power it feels like you can do anything. It surprises me that cars were this stylish in the mid 2000s its like nothing else on the road. I love my Volvo and will keep it for a very long time.
Great
I enjoy the ride in this vehicle. It drives smoothly, you hardly know you are in a car, it handles very nicely. I also like the style, I bought it because of it's looks, also because I feel it is a safe car for family and friends.
A pleasure to own
The Volvo S80 T6 has been a pleasure to own and drive. For a large sedan it gets decent gas mileage and the twin turbo provides impressive thrust for passing. Superb fit and finish. The hallmark feature is its luxurious ride on long road trips coupled with renowned Volvo safety features, provides passengers with a stong sense of well being & comfort.
Awesome car with a few trips for repairs
This car is very powerful and performs excellent. I purchased this used a few years ago with 85k miles. The issue has been the repairs such as suspension and the throttle body but that was covered from a recall. I must say it's a comfortable car and looks great but it makes me nervous that a very costly repair is about to happen in the near future. Replacing the timing belt was not too expensive though and I recommend going to an independent shop unless you like to pay double the price and that can add up since this car goes in the shop every three months!
LUXURY WITH POWER
A great car. Accelerates on the fly...Quite, awesome sound system...Very comfortable on long trips.....A great overall value.
A reliable, safe, & comforable ride
Experience has been excellent to superior with very few problems of any kind. The car has superior safety features, is a comfortable ride and extremely reliable over 30,000 miles to date. It averages 2o miles in the city and 27 on the highway. The sound systym is excellent and as are the handling characteristics. No realignment has been necessary, the tire wear factor has been excellent with an est. additinal 10k miles to go. Brake lining wear to match.
2000 Volvo S80 2.9
I think that the car is overrated for the price. It's too many kinks in it and I have not gotten the enjoyment out of the car that I thought I would. It's a little to sluggish for me. The electronic throttle module and gas pedal potentiameter went out on it at 57,000 miles. Even though I had an extended warranty, VOLVO did not want to honor it initially. I really think there may also be a problem with the electrical system and the transmission.
My Volvo's affair with my mechanic
After putting more than 275000 miles on my '92 Pontiac Bonneville (with no need for engine work - just liked to have brakes and tires), I decided it was time to retire the old workhorse and buy a little luxury. I bought my Volvo S80 at a used car dealership, where I noticed that the warning light for the airbag was on. The dealer said the Volvo mechanics could reset that sensor - apparently not! Turns out that Volvo put the airbag SENSOR under the driver's seat carpet. The used car dealer STEAMED that carpet, thus ruining a $1000 sensor. My car's now in the shop for the second time in three months. Volvo engineers ought to be taken out and shot for what they've done to this car!
Run!
Purchased this car for our daughter. Volvo=safe and reliable ,right? Wrong! This car had it's 60k check up before we purchased. One owner, immaculate care, extended warranty so every squeak was addressed and car had 59k on it. Took it in for timing chain replacement (knew it would be considerable), but two days before, ABS, check engine, dipped beam messages popped up, and the passenger window refused to roll up the last inch. Well, the dealer that gave the car a clean bill of health 4 mo. ago, now says it is going to take $7,000 to fix. Are you kidding me? Says our best bet is to trade it in...they will give us $3,500 for it. Oh, Ford owns Volvo now.
Ignore the Complainer's, it's Great!!!
It's true what they say, only the one's with problems are the ones who speak up! I purchased my 2000 S80 shortly after an associate of mine bought his. I now have about 87,000 miles on mine and not an ounce of trouble. A recall was preformed at no charge and Volvo did the free software upgrade. After reading some of these reviews, I contacted my associate to ask him about his. He remembers one repair under warranty but believes it might have just been a recall. Overall, he said the reliability has been superb! He owns the 2.9 and mine is a T6. Compared to my previous BMW's, this car has been absolutely wonderful! I recommend this car to anyone!
Worst Car I've Ever Owned!
How I wish I knew what I was getting into three years ago! I have had nothing but problems with my 2000 T-6 and the first one (a 99 T-6) was taken back by the dealer. Volvo tried to make a really awesome car but put it on the market to let the consumer find the bugs! Shame on them! Mechanically, it is by far the most unreliable car I have ever had. My advice: SAVE YOURSELF A HUGE AMOUNT OF TIME, MONEY, HEADACHE, AND HEARTACHE AND DON'T BUY THE S80!
Looks Good - Did't Last
We bought this used with 39,000 miles. It has low profile tires which was a mistake as the noise from them is almost unbearable. Had the front suspension replaced at 87,000 (ride still noisy even after that). Had the sunfoof guides replaced due to roof rattle. Also, light bulbs burned out on a routine basis - a big pain. Little trim items kept breaking that had to be replaced - also a pain. THe radio/CD was of poor quality with poor sound and reception. Don't know if the lack of quality was the fault of Volvo or Ford cheapening things once they took over. Resale value does not hold at all. Finally dumped this dog at 89,000 miles and bought a used Lexus RX300, which is wonderful.
Great Car
Lots of complainers on here, but so far no major problems with my purchase. One instance of fuse blowing on Driver Motorized Seat, but easily fixed. Definitely purchase extended warranty on any vehicle you plan to purchase. Excellent handling in turns, very comfortable seating. Great acceleration on freeway, especially when passing. Great sound system. True luxury feel with excellent safety features and handling.
Stay away
This car is terrible and I had chronic problems (sway bars, electrical system, power steering, ABS, electrical, etc. I have had practically all the same problems that everyone else who has rated this car has had. Repairs and routine maintenance are extremely expensive yet with this caliber of car you wouldn't mind paying once in a while if the reliability was better. I bought the car in 2000 with 5,000 miles on it and traded it this year with 47,000 miles. I traded on my first car other than a Volvo in 20 years.
99 Volvo S80
Cost $3000 @ 59,000 miles for a new transmission. Warning ligts on constantly, nusaince items breaking, and over all poor quality. I would recommend any other car but the S80
Great vehicle; Unacceptable depreciation
The vehicle looks great and is fun to drive , with ample power. No major mechanical problems have been encountered except for numerous bulbs burning out. The steering column and dash controls are poorly placed and difficult to decipher. My biggest complaint with the vehicle is the far to rapid depreciation experienced. The used price of these vechicles falls like a rock. Dealers do not support the market and openly admit that there is limited demand for used units. I was offered less than 50% of the original MSRP by the selling dealer after only two years and about 20000 miles.
Don't By A 2000 Volvo S80 T-6
This car is horrible. I purchased this car used and I have had problems with ever since. My car is in the shop every 3-4 months for things other than regular maitenance. This car has had two recalls on it since I have owned it. I had to replace the ECU and the power steering rank. Luckily I had the VIP select warranty. I have prolems with the engine stalling while I was in freeway traffice along with my daughter in the car, I have had to have the radiator replaced, amongst other things. I have owned this car for a year and half and it's been in the shop so much that I just should have stuck with a Honda Accord.
Great ride
I believe I own the best European car on the market. Maybe not the best in every category, but definitely the biggest bang for the buck. I love the ride, safety, and the awesome reliability. In 73000 miles, I've had a position light burn out-- that's it. I love this car from the outside in. I bought my S80 with 6 miles on it, and I plan on driving it until the odometer stops turning and the wheels fall off. And last but not least, I've experienced very competent Volvo after sale service.
Wish we'd read the reviews first
Loved the car overall but our '94 Jeep Cherokee with 230k miles is more dependable. After several repairs of one kind or another, she started hesitating. Trusted mechanic said it was throttle body covered by extended warranty so take it to them for free replacement. Local dealer charged $100 for diagnostic and said it needed $3000 head gasket. Not so local dealer charged $100 for diagnostic and said it needed a $2300 head gasket. Car currently sitting at trusted mechanic's lot waiting for retired Volvo mechanic who agrees it's the throttle body to come fix it. It's been 5 months. Tomorrow we're buying a Lexus.
Best first car.
I bought my s80 for $2000.00 and it's been a been a better car than the cars that my friends bought for over $8000. I love the car. It's a little bit expensive but it's soo durable. I don't know why people think it's so crappy. It can destroy audis and mercedes. My father a certified auto mechanic and car body specialist and helps me maintain the car. It's performance is amazing if you know how to drive.
Never Again Buying Volvo
Bought a used 2000 S80 Turbo for a "safe, reliable, and comfortable" commuter vehicle. Well, its definitely comfortable, and safe from all accounts I've read, but reliable? HA! I've had this car 4 months and its been in the shop for SEVEN weeks total! Electrical problems with message center, faulty parts installed on a routine 60,000 mile service, and the transmission went out at 70,000 miles. Followed service manual to a T, and this is what I get for a $45,000 car? I'm going back to Chevrolet.
Poor Engine Performance
My 2000 S-80 has 87,00 miles on it. I purchased it in Oct of 2000 with 18,000 miles on it. The computer was replaced about 2 years later and thats when the problems started. My car was never the same. Now I am having problems with the mass air flow sensor. Every 6 months it needs replaced. Yet when the remove the code from the computer, it runs fine for about 2 weeks. And now it is starting to have electrical issues, in addition to eating head and tail lights.
Would I do it again?
Yes, if it were a newer model S80. The 1999 & to a lesser extent 2000 model were plagued with electrical problems. Since I bought mine, the steering rack, gas tank door stop, rt headlamp assy, computer software, various light bulbs, electronic throatle body assy, body rattles, & other stuff too numerous to remember have been diagnosed as defective. Volvo of Nashville declined to honor the factory warranty, & gave poor service. Volvo of Cinncinatti was great! You can't gas up w/o removing the key or the computer goes wacky. Too many quirks. Quality greatly improved after Ford took over and poured $$ into Volvo. S60 is bullet proof per several servie
Not bad, but would not buy another one
My S80 T6 has not had many problems. A steering recall, and replacement CD/Radio has been all. I put in synthetic oil on a regular basis and rarely take it to the dealer. When you pull the radio to fix a stuck CD, you have to get the air bag service light reset - can not do this normally. This has always been a pain at the dealer. Although I have not had problems, I count my blessings as others have. With 50K miles + on my car, the car seems "loose", as panels shake regularily. Trunk space is great, it fits 4 people well, but there must be better cars out there for $40K (2000 price). I have no real issues, but would not buy another S80.
i love my volvo... so far
I see all the negative reviews on the volvo. i recently just purchased my volvo with 136000 miles. my volvo is in great shape. my leather seats are in great condition, no tears, rips, my radio, heated memory seats, sunroof and all features still work. im not sure if the previous owner of this car just took really good care of it or what but so far i love this car. i have since i drove it the first time. i would never have even looked at a volvo in the past, but so far my experience has been wonderful. we will see in a year if i have any major issues.
Smooth Ride/ Front End Electric Problems
Car Drives exceptional, only had car less than 30 days, purchased used, taken in for repair at least 5 times; for light bulb outage, faulty alarm, gas tank door; CV joints, bolts on front suspension, wind shield wipers; best advise, purchase extended warranty! Volvos are great safe cars but the 2000 S80 has many electric and front end problems, in addition to console and sun roof rattling, also Poor AM reception, but overall sound system is superb!I would purchase another Volvo but not without a warranty
Almost nearly
Have owned one Porsche, two BMWs, one Mercedes, and now two VOLVOs. I have enjoyed driving this S80 as much as any owned except the Porsche. I bought the S80 because of looks, room, perfomance, and reliability of the previous VOLVO 850. Everything as expected EXCEPT reliability. ELectrical problems, front suspension, transmission,A/C,power window, radio, brakes. This car is maintenance intensive and it is a shame because when everything is working correctly it is a great car. Won,t own another
Win the Lottery!
After "upgrading" to Volvo from American, I'm going back. Many good features, but not worth the maintenance and repair costs--and they won't stand by their product. They admit that there are bugs in the 2000 model, but I'm paying the enormous costs. Problems: Electronic Throttle Module replacement, A/C, ABS module, bulbs burning out, suspension, rattles, fan assembly, etc... Not worth the premium paid and buying into the Volvo quality/saftey image!
A Little Disappointed
Car has been in the shop over 11 times in the year that I have had it. Little things, nothing real serious. Steering, vibrations, suspension. I will probably buy a BMW next.
Don't buy
Worst car I've ever owned by far. Great ride when I'm not spending money on transmission, wheel bearings, rattling moon roof, rotors, etc . . . Stay away.
Best car I've ever owned, minor problems
This car is, bar none, the most fun car I've ever driven. The combination of the good handling, lots of power, and immense interior comfort all add up the the best driving experience ever. I've had a few issues, with this car I purchased at 44000 miles (with Certified warranty plan). The radiator fan controller stopped working, the sunroof mechanism needed minor repairs, and the front brakes needed repair. There were all kinds of sundry items that needed to be repaired (trim panels, stuff like that), but that is true with any used car. The problems were solved quickly and efficently by my dealer. I would wholeheartedly reccomend this car.
First time buyer
We have always driven Fords or Dodges. Since the children are growen we wanted to buy something more adult oriented and classy. I love my Volvo so far, I feel so special driving it, when heads turn and comments are made about the looks of it. So far no problems.
Never again
It's a shame that a top notch mfrg. like Volvo would let the engine quality slip to non existent.Yes, it's safe and comfortable, but high maintenance-- unbelieveable. In one year, I spent over $4k in tires (only 2 types fit the rims) and constant repairs i.e. every 10k youhave to clean the electronic throttle (I did twice in a yr) or it will surge. Never again!
Volvo S80
Solid driving car. Delivers excellent performance with very good fuel economy. Still the best styled car on the road.
Great Car Until It Breaks
Had my S80 T6 for 18 months from 22K to 40K miles. During that time, the following failed or broke: upper strut mounts (2), oxygen sensor, mass flow sensor, motor mount, lower control arm, strut assembly, front brake rotors, ABS control unit, turbo oil return line, dashboard clock, ignition switch, turn signal switch, headlight assembly, exterior trim piece, door trim piece, etc., etc. Additionally, when I sold it, one of the turbos was blowing oil and the transmission shifts had gotten mushy (neither of which the dealership was willing to correct). Other than that, it was the best car you could ever own. It was fast, handled great, and was very comfortable. It also got about 20 mpg.
A lot of hype
Had problems from Day 1. My first S80 T6 had to be shipped back to Sweden for diagnosis. On the replacement, the sight lines are so bad that these are dangerous; there is not a blind "spot," there is a right blind side. Transmission doesn't always shift properly; it sometimes reverses when it says "drive," parks when it says "reverse," etc. And the car shakes when one goes from 0 to 5 on a dry surface! (Like pulling out of a red light.) The doors do not close tightly. All in all, a lot of hype.
poor quality service
Too many mechanical problems. More than all 4 of my Vorger Vans added to gether with many more miles. Service is very frendly and make efforts to be helpful. But the quality of their mechanics is questionable. It would be very helpful if Volvo would publish a manual for this car,(not an on line manual), so that the owner can show the mechanic how to find or fix the problem.
What a car!!!!
Love it, Love it, Love It!
NO MORE VOLVO
I wish i had done my research before I bought this 2000 S80T. It's been nothing but trouble. I loved the look of the car in simply NOT RELIABLE. Volvo are very pricey cars for them to be so unreliable. I had to replace so many things and i've always maintained it so well and always dealer maintained. but i'm done with this company
Best Ever
It's the smoothest ride I've ever experienced. Inside, it feels like a car of much bigger size. Extremely roomy. Very comfortable seats. The standard features are incredible. All this and safety, too!!!
